Hi all, i recently scoured these forums searching for the most simple way to achieve recovery on the Xperia S. Of course to no avail to a newbie like myself. My device is rooted and with ICS, with an unlocked bootloader. I initially tried to achieve CWM by using the application on the market (Prior to obtaining root but with unlocked bootloader & ICS). I recently tried to achieve CWM using the CWM - Xperia on the market and success it worked! Simply click the "Reboot into recovery mode" within the application and it will install CWM into the system partition so you can use recovery! I am unsure whether this has been posted recently but i avoided posting it elsewhere due to restrictions and the like, i hope this hasn't been discovered yet and im not just being ignorant to the forum i literally could not find any news of this elsewhere!
If needs be, i will make a guide on how to achieve this including the rooting and flashing steps i took.

CWM 5 supports the touch screen buttons on the bottom of the phone also. its very easy to use!
Beats audio installed via this method.
On what firmware is that available? This is just a one click method after achieving root.

CWM is some kind like the Bios from your pc...except does not have the same functions
it`s a recovery, where you can backup your rom and restore if something goes wrong with your phone!
with it you can install some custom ROM`s
you can clear cache...dalvik cache....and a lot more to do!
but really the mos usefull function of it is the backup-restore and the flash of different modules rom`s and kernels!
it`s better to have cwn just in case

install Sony PC Comanion first
second check the usb debugging box from {}developer options
then just plug your phone into the usb
after that double click on install.bat
i am on unlocked bootloader
i don`t know if it works with locked bootloader
it should work
another way to install CWM is to flash a kernel wich already have CWM on it!
to do that you must install fastboot driver an connect your phone in fastboot mode to your pc(with the phone shut off pres and keep volume up key and plug into USB untill the blue led is on)
than go to the extracted folder(in the attachment) and pres and hold shift key + right click
select from menu open command window here
in the cmd window type " fastboot flash boot kernel.elf" without the comma`s
it will install the Xperia SSpedd OC @ 1,67 MHZ and you will get CWM olso on your device!
After installing that to enter CWM pres volume up when booting the phone while the blue led and light stripe is on!
this is olso for unlocked bootloader,i don`t know if it works for locked bootloader since my phone is with unlocked bootloader from the day 1!
Again simply installing this APK from the market seems to be less daunting.

Ares,
I think the op was talking about this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pvy.CWMinstaler which was the purpose of his post. The easiest way for new people to install CWM is with this apk from the market.

Shameless crosspost from the tutorial-thread for installing Cyanogenmod on the Neo over at the Cyanogenmod forums.
Hi! I'm quite new to rooting and flashing my device (started reading and doing it yesterday), but I really want to make it work now, but I can't seem to get it working.
I have no problems rooting my phone or installing ClockWorkMod, but I can't seem to get it to run neither a custom kernel nor a custom ROM.
I have a SE Xperia Neo, and have both followed the mentioned tutorial, and tried other methods (some pulled straight out of my ass) to flash my device, but no matter what I do, ecxept flashing to a stock ROM of Android (I think that's what it is called?), it always freeze on the Sony Ericsson logo, right after the FreeXperia logo, and I have to do a hard shutdown (pop out the battery and replace it again) to get it to do something else. However, when frozen, both Flashtool and SuperOneClick is able to root the system at this point, so it isn't frozen, but it never goes on doing something, either. I guess it's just trying to boot a (incompatible) ROM.
My bootloader is unlocked (I just checked).
I've tried following the mentioned tutorial with both a phone flashed with 4.0.2.A.0.42 and 4.0.1.A.0.283 (read somewhere those were the best supported or best to use for this?). I've tried flashing the boot.img from the Cyanogen-zipfile to the phone (went well) on both; I've tried repeatedly pressing the volume down key both on boot and on the FreeXperia screen; I've tried to flash boot.img to the phone, rooting i, using both SuperOneClick and Flashtool then installing the ClockWorkMod (as I couldn't get to the recovery screen). And, I've followed the tutorial between two and three times with both 4.0.2.A.0.42 and 4.0.1.A.0.283. I have no idea what to try next.
Does anybody here have a clue for me? Should I try flashing with another Android version running on my phone (if so: which)?

No, it doesn't say that

Anw, since you see free xperia logo that means you flashed kernel(or at least boot with that kernel) with success.
Q1: You say you pressed volume-, have you tried with pressing back repeatedly? or by taping on screen? or repeatedly pressing power button?
Q2: show me instruction which you used to flash kernel?
Q3: you said you installed CWM trough flashtool, does that mean you manage to enter CWM eventually or not?
Q4: show the link of what you are trying to install.

I did not install CWM through Flashtool. However, when not following the tutorial I mentioned, I installed CWM Recovery using a modded installer. IIRC it was modded by DoomLord, but I can't find the link for it. When using a stock ROM, I boot into CWM Recovery with ease by repeatedly pressing the volume down key.

And, by the way, Madfysh, thank you for caring enough to taking your time to try and bend your mind to understand my problems. If I knew your reddit username, I'd stalk you and upvote everything.
Only things I can think of is:
1) make 100% sure you are writing fastboot flash boot boot.img and not fastboot boot boot.img
Sometimes people write wrongly without noticing, and after few posts they realize they wrote wrong instructions.
2) try repeatedly pressing other keys, each time your phone starts with that kernel, try pressing one key.
3) try FREEXPERIA RELEASE INSTALLATION from same link.
I will try everything you've suggested, Madfysh, and report back after trying.

As the download link was not working/outdated, I tried another kernel/ROM-combo, that worked. Now I'll try and see if I can find a ROM that I really like and use that instead of Cyanogenmod, as it looks like it don't play well with my phone at this point. Thank you for taking your time to try to help me, Madfysh. You're the best!
Since i see many people having problems with installing cm9 on neo v, i've decided to help them
If you're a noob, have a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409269
If you're not a noob, proceed with the steps confirming that you have performed the steps
PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS CAREFULLY
THE REFERENCE LINKS GIVEN ARE ONLY MEANT FOR READING AND INFORMATION PLEASE DONT FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS TO DO SOMETHING TO YOUR PHONE.
Step 1: PREPARE YOUR COMPUTER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khrxo0-NieM

IMPORTANT !!!!!!
ONCE ROOTED,
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en and backup all your apps(on SD card)
Step 3(next step) of this post will reset(factory reset) your phone.
BACKUP ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND CALENDER ON GOOGLE
BACKUP ALL YOUR MESSAGES AND IMPORTANT STUFF !!
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SD CARD ON PC FOR SAFETY (THIS WILL BE DONE AFTER ALL BACKUPS ARE DONE I.E. LAST BACKUP)
Step 3: UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
If you have no idea about this, read this
Why exactly is this a big deal? For the general population, this doesn’t matter. However, for the modding community, locked bootloaders are simply a pain. When the bootloader is locked, certain portions of the device are unable to be customized such as recoveries or kernels. A lot of the time, when rooting a device, the first step requires the bootloader to be unlocked or bypassed. So, depending on the device in question and the will of the developer, creative Android hacking has allowed some devices with locked bootloaders to run custom ROMs. Generally, these devices aren’t as stable as they could be if the device was able to be completely customized from the ground up.
1) http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and follow the steps carefully ( skip step 13, we've already done that )
IF YOU GET STUCK ON STEP 14,DO THIS
to navigate to android SDK folder, use this command(without quotes)
"cd location_of_your_android_SDK\platform-tools"
for me, it was - "C:\androidSDK\platform-tools"
2)If you followed the rules, you will have an unlocked bootloader
3)Yipeeee !!!
4)Dont worry about your apps, they're still on your SD card
5)Restore only the apps which are very important and you cant live without them for a day..
Step 4: INSTALLING CWM(CLOCK WORK MOD / RECOVERY)
if you dont know what cwm is, just read but dont follow the steps to install it
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/
1) http://www.mediafire.com/?73xv18tht0e8zt4 download cwm
2)Connect your phone in MSC (mass storage mode) mode and wait until SD card available to PC
3)increase your display time out to 2 minutes
4)Enable USB debugging and allow 3rd party/unknown sources
5)open the downloaded folder(extract first)
6)Run install-cwm1.cmd
7)sit back and enjoy!!!
8)once finished, you'll have cwm installed!!!!
9)to check if you have cwm, turn off phone
10)turn on and when sony logo appears, repeatedly press vol down button until you reach a blue colored menu, if successful, cwm is installed properly!! if not, please comment or reinstall it.
11)navigation in cwm-
go up-vol up
go down-vol down
select option-home button
previous menu-back button
thanks siddharthsure93
Step 5: TAKING A NANDROID BACKUP
if you have no idea about this, read this
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/38468-nandroid-backup-what-is-it-and-did-i-need-it/
make sure that your sd card has at least 1gb free space and you have 50% battery charge
1)Hoping that you have cwm installed, turn off phone
2)Enter cwm by repeatedly press vol down button when sony logo appears
3)go to "backup and restore"
4)select "backup"
5)wait for 10-15 minutes till your phone is backuped
6)now you have a copy of your current phone and rom memory
we do this to restore phone if something goes wrong
NOW YOU HAVE PREPARED YOUR PHONE TO GET CM9 OR ANY FU*KIN ROM !!! :good::good:
IF I GO WRONG SOMEWHERE, PLEASE CORRECT ME WE ALL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES.
PLEASE PRESS THE THANKS BUTTON IF I HELPED YOU

Im with a neo v with A.0.62 firmware
Which cannot be rooted
But i have already unlocked bootloader
what can I do now?
If i directly flash in JB Kernel and rom, will I be able to have root permissions? Do i even need to care about my .62 firmware if i want to go into CM10?
What should i do? Thanks!

You will need to root your phone first. Installing a custom ROM won't automatically give you root acces. In fact, I don't think you will be able to install a custom ROM without ClockWork Mod Recovery which needs root access first. Follow Sony's own rooting guide here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0. Then install X-Parts from the Play Store to get CWM.
Once you have CWM you can install any appropriate custom ROM you like.
Oh is that gonna be painful
Iv unlocked bootloaded with .62 firmware
So i cant get to official ics and stucked with the .62, flashing an older firmware for the root is risky? After that i have to go back to .62 again?

Use flash tool and an ftf file to update to ICS. You can go with 0.587 version for example.
After update as you are on unlocked bootloader you should flash a custom ICS kernel like suave, night elf or any other ICS compatible. This will give you root and cwm.
Look at the stickys. You will find all you need.

You can always relock the bootloader (don't know what method you used to unlock, so can't advise on how to relock - I only know how if unlocking was done through Sony). Update the firnware to stock Sony ICS using Sony's PC Companion. Then root it using Sony's rooting guide. After rooting you can unlock the bootloader again. Install X-Parts and CWM. Then try out the custom ROMs+kernels to your heart's content.

On the other hand, unlocking via official method gives you an easy option to Relock bl via flashtool!
There's a thread by Blagus on how to do that!
Btw even Relocking via setool is an option for unofficially unlocked bl users!
So there's always an option!

If this is what you're talking about, I've read it. But will it allow me to use the PC Companion and receive updates(Although I hardly feel there's going to be more than 1 update)/ Go back to official Sony ROM?

Yes. That's the tutorial I'm talking about. I only mentioned what I did because I've done it before. After relocking use PC Companion to update your phone. Or the Sony phone repair program. I don't remember which. If you try both (like I did) one (or both) of them will work. But still you are out of warranty. You know that, don't you?

Basically its all about DRM loss. What do I exactly lose? Only trackid? I suppose the newer versions run on unlocked bootloaders as well.

I think you are right. It's basically about losing DRM. I don't know what it is and of what use it is. All I know is I've never missed it. If you are into trying out custom ROMs then unlocking the bootloader is a must because certain custom ROMs need custom kernels. To install custom kernels you must have an unlocked bootloader.

I plugged it in and yes, it charged! but I am gonna try the RUU now, ill tell you the results, really never encountered this before ;(
May I ask why you want to relock your bootloader?
If your phone is not charging, it's probably because your Recovery is not the latest to date.
@muhhh351
You should flash a Recovery known working on charging mode, the first releases were lacking this mode, but this is resolved now. Click on Frequently Asked Questions in my signature everything is there for you to find about HOX+ and their recoveries.

TWRP is more complete and a rigourously tested recovery. CWM was modded to work on the HOX+.
First make sure your SDK tool (adb) is correctly installed and also the HTC's drivers. (There is a link for a tutorial in my signature.)
Download the correspondent recovery for your phone International OR AT&T/Telus (N.B. Links are available in the Sticky FAQ)
Flash the Recovery.
Clear Cache
Reboot in Recovery
Install your correspondent version of any ROM.zip you want that is already on your storage. (Otherwise,Sideload a ROM to be able to flash one inRecovery)
Flash the boot.img of your desired ROM
Clear Cache Again
Reboot
Should work

I tried to be polite (anyway I am not allowed to talk like that, I never developed any sort of app, neither a ROM or kernel so I am not very qualified to judge others work), I'm sure you understood what I meant.
And yes I agree everything is way more complicated and unstable with CWM.
Please help. I'm having same problem. I can get into bootloader and fastboot and even successfully installed recovery but I can't get into recovery bc I always go to that white htc screen and no idea what to do next. Please please help me. I am on 1.15 software and 1.32 hboot and 4.1.1 Android version
Thank u

Reboot your phone in Bootloader mode (fastboot) you should have this 4 choices :
HBOOT
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
leave HBOOT highlighted then press the power button once, a new menu will appear :
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
SIMLOCK
SHOW BARCODE
IMAGE CRC
From there with the Volume control (up & down) simply select RECOVERY and press Power button one time, your phone should Reboot in Recovery mode.
When in Recovery mode the VERY FIRST thing you will do, is a complete backup of your actual ROM and you will keep it as long as you gonna own the phone, so put this backup in a safe place on your computer and make sure to never delete it.
Thank you but the thing is.. I put twrp on it and version 2.3.3.0 and it won't boot in it. Any ideas why? Then I looked for a more recent recovery and I wasn't sure if this is evita?? So, basically I'm still unable to get into recovery and it goes to that htc white screen.
Btw. Your instructions are excellent

Navigate to platform-tools of your SDK folder.
Right click and create a New text document
In the new text paste this : c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
Save it with this name : StartADB.bat (important to save it with .bat extension and overwrite the warning)
Now right click again on your new bat file, and create a shortcut to your desktop.
Now try to adb devices your phone via your new desktop shortcut.
Type this command with your phone plugged : adb devices
You should have your serial in return

Hi,
I have successfully rooted my Xperia U phone (with ICS 4.0.1), and also installed the CWM.
I have downloaded the experience 2.1.zip rom file and placed the same in internal memory also.
Now when I restart my phone to be able to boot in recovery mode, I am not able to do so.
As soon as press power button, multi-coloured illumination doesn't take place in LED bar. As soons as Sony logo appears, I start pressing the 'Volume Down' button repeatedly, but nothing happens. It simply goes to Xperia logo animation screen and boots the phone with older ROM only.
Am I missing something. Please help. I want to install custom ROM to upgrade to JB, but I am not able to do so as I am not able to boot my phone in Recovery mode, which is required to flash the current ROM and installing new ROM on top of it (as per m knowledge).
Please Help. Urgent.
If video can be uploaded for the solution, i would highly appreciate the work and effort becoz I got frustrated now after following so many procedures given on internet to root / install CWM / boot in recovery. I am done with first two things: Rooting and Installing CWM. I struggling hard to reboot my phone in CWM mode
Thanks in advance.

2. All settings are related to ICS stock only
Only look and feel is changed as like in xperia Z.
Can you help me in this, why it din't update to JB?

Munjenis's CWM work for me as well.
Hello guys,
I just got an Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i, on 4.0.4 ICS) and I want to install a custom rom to make better use of the device but I'm quite a newbie with android phones.
I searched around the net a bit and found the following roms:
Super Jelly Bean 8.0[JB 4.1.2
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean PAC-man ROM
[JB 4.3.1][CM10.2] LegacyXperia
[KitKat 4.4.1][CM11.0] LegacyXperia
Which one is the better solution? Has less impact in performance and overall is the better choice?
From what I understand Super Jelly Bean 8.0 is the better one.
I want to move apps that are installed on the phone's memory to the SD card. I used this guide but it doesn't move all the apps, only some that I downloaded on my phone. I suppose rooting would fix that problem too. Also can you download (and install) apps directly to the SD card?
Regarding rooting I found this.
Sorry if I made any mistake, please bare with me.
Thank you in advance!
First of all asking for the best rom is not allowed. Try some of them and find the best for your usage
For moving apps check out Link2SD :good:
For rooting use the program that you posted in the link and it'll work. But for installing a custom rom you have to unlock the bootloader to flash a custom kernel

read mihans very helpful post above
just to gettting know you: if u install a custom kernel (which all the 4 roms require) you dont have to root the phone as all of those kernels /roms come prerooted, so no need for errot, just for ics maybe. if u want to install some that roms:
- read b4 doing, like the installing process. & if u can get some friend whos a bit xperienced in this for help.
- unlock BL.
- flash custom kernel form rom.zip / or the one which is required
- install rom by cwm & use it for some days

I see. I just asked to see what's more popular and overall better, like saying update 5 is better than update 4.
I downloaded Link2SD but I suppose it works only on rooted phones.
For installing the custom ROM, I should follow the instructions in its thread I presume.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi again, so I managed to unlock my bootloader using your guide, it was really helpful!
Then I went to flash the kernel of the phone using the Super Fusion kernel from here.
All went good with the flashing, no errors or bad blocks in the log file. But when I try to power up the phone to install the custom rom the phone shows a black screen.
I powered up the phone and kept pressing the down button. The led turned blue/cyan (it vibrated) and then it stays yellow.
Can you help me?

Thanks for the help. Is this kernel compatible?
Finally I managed to solve my problems.
As it seems I was using the wrong version of the ROM I was trying to install. In the end all went as they should!
Mihahn you are a genius! The ROM works flawlessly, it's super fast!!! I can't believe that a 2011 phone can be this fast, great job man!!!
I found only 2 problems, the Gallery app doesn't seem to work. Every time I click on it, it tries to open but then closes again. I guess that's not much of a problem as I can install a different one.
My other problem is with the mechanical keyboard. I managed to change from 2 different languages of writing (English and Greek) with the "globe" key but it seems that there is no auto-replace/capitalization/punctuate function. Is there a way to fix that? Also the brightness of the keys is a bit low, is it possible to increase the brightness?
Thanks again for your stupendous work, keep up! :good:
