Signal keeps dropping constantly - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since yesterday my phone keeps losing it's signal. I'm having full signal, and one second later it switches to no signal, (a `x` next to the signal bars). This takes about 10 seconds. Then it has signal again for about 13 seconds, again full signal. This keeps repeating.
In the status menu it also says "Service state: Out of service" when it loses signal.
Short version: my phone keeps switching signal/no signal about 4 times a minute.
I tried some things myself, but no difference:
Tried on multiple locations (on all of them normally i would have normal signal strength)
Rebooted the phone
Reflashed the phone
Flashed another modem
Ejected sim and cleaned it

What's also interesting, when i had signal i tried to make a call, the first couple of times i tested that my call would drop after a few seconds (the moment my phone lost signal) but later on when i tested that, the signal stayed on nicely for 2 minutes while on the call. The moment i stop the call, my signal is hickupping again! Really weird!
I'm desperate, i can't find the problem. Could it be hardware? In my opinion it looks too weird to be hardware, but what do you guys think. Can you help me? Thank you!

Try flashing modem again. Check the modem thread for your correct version.

Until today i was on the stock baseband i9100xxlpw. If i'm not mistaken, my phone was boxed with this baseband.
Today i replaced it with I9100BOLP5.
My old baseband always worked fine until today. Could that be the problem?

well suggest u to reflash back ur old modem(I9100XXLPW) and then check for the same issue
u can find the same in link below, dwnld and flash thro recovery, reboot phone and see
Modem Collection

I'm having a similar issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768392. But mine happens just once a day, but everyday nonetheless for the last 8 days.

Done that, now i'm back to my XXLPW radio. Still no difference, again no more then 13 seconds signal before it dies for a moment again.

If you're having issues even on your stock rom/radio then it sounds like you have a hardware problem.
Does it do this just at home or is it elsewhere aswell? if its just at home/area then it could be some sort of interference maybe, just a guess. If its in all areas and your re-stocked and got same issue I would send it back to Samsung. (Make sure you reset binary counter).

You're not experiencing signal drop, but constant unregistering from carrier. It may be SIM problem.

This seems like a very likely explanation, but how can this happen all of a sudden, when everything was all fine & dandy earlier?

Unfortunately, I have no idea.

that seems likely yes. But what can i do? I tried my sim card in another phone, it works fine. I tried another sim in my galaxy S2, it had the same problem. So it's not the sim and probably not the carrier.
Another notable point, i called *#*#4636#*#* and went to phone status.
What cought my eye is this: i can select which mode i want (gsm only, gsm auto, wcdma auto, etcetera). When i have no signal, it says unknown. When it gets signal again, it says WCDMA auto.
What to do, what to try? I'll try everything!

update: I disassembled the phone, i reconnected all the cables, i even replaced the backpanel (which holds the speaker, and i guess/hoped some more electronics). Then it looked for a second that things were better, but i'm mistaken... i'm still losing signal constantly!

This may sound stupid but have you done a FULL wipe, and re install of stock firmware? It worked for me & another guy too, & it is not related to modem getting corrupt because changing the modem didn't make any difference. A full fresh install of firmware is required, in my case I tried CM9. But I did notice my APN settings were different from stock. Anyways try using your phone on GSM mode only & not WCDMA for a while with data off.

u can try other sim and can check if it works or not

Weirdest thing. Kept my phone on charger and off this night. This morning i turned it on, and it lost signal a couple of times. After a little while though, it got better and now it's working fine with no signal drops. Average no signal percentage today is 4% at this moment. In comparison, yesterday it was 87%...
So weirdly enough, it looks to be fixed for now... but for how long and why, i ask...

You never know it could have been a network thing! That is if you haven't faced it again.

So, a bit later and it's still present. Sometimes it works fine for a full day and then all of a sudden, it drops signal again. Sometimes a few times, sometimes only once. And in some occasions it does not come back.
When i do a reboot, signal is back and fine again (but also sometimes it's still giving some problems).
In this example, signal was ok. After a while i lost signal, and it did not come back up (i waited about 10 minutes for it to come back). then, i reboot and the signal is back again.
As i'm hearing, i'm also not the only one.... What could be this problem? I'm desperate!

I'm still looking into the problem. I'm finding it hard to find a solution. I've tried going back to full stock. Changing the modem, changing the RIL. I updated with KIES. But nothing so far, still the same problems. And now i'm looking at the system logs with logcat.
I found something that is weird. Around the moment it loses signal this is my status log:

Unstable 3G/H connection but 2G and Wi-Fi are fine

Ok all here is my problem and I know there many more suffering from this:
Connecting to the internet from my Hero works fine on 2G (GPRS) and Wi-Fi, but is very unstable on 3G (UMTS) and H (HSDPA).
By starting a thread, I want to get to an answer as to WHY this is happening and hopefully find a solution
My problem started around the time I started using custom 2.1 (or radio) ROMs, but I am not sure whether flashing those is actually the cause. I have a SIM unlocked Hero and an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile Netherlands (called Web 'n' Walk Plus @ 1 Mbit/s down, 384 Kbit/s up). I had no problem on the stock 1.5 ROM/radio.
Symptoms:
Whenever an app is making a server request, the 3G icon starts blinking the up arrow, shortly followed by the H icon blinking the up arrow, indicating the request is made.
When all is well, the response is received and communication is quick and smooth. Most of the time though, the phone continues making requests but no response is received and the application reports a network error/timeout. This happens while signal strength is max (4 bars).
Ping test:
Enter *#*#INFO#*#* in the phone dialpad and select Phone Information, press the "Run ping test" button.
- The line "Ping IpAddr" reports: "Fail: IP addr not reachable";
- The line "Ping Hostname(www.google.com)" reports: "Fail: Host unreachable";
- The line "HTTP Client test" reports: "Fail: IOException".
The preferred network type is "WCDMA preferred", as set in the lower part of the same screen.
Note: WCDMA is an air interface standard used for UMTS and the like and is not related to CDMA, which is the mobile access technology used in the USA as opposed to GSM, which is used everywhere else in the world.
The thing is though, that the connection does not seem to fall back to 2G but rather experiences a timeout.
FWIW: the Phone Information screen reports a signal strength of -dBm, 25 asu.
Tried:
- Flashing various ROMs to spot any difference, none found.
- Flashing newer radio ROM (JU instead of EU), no luck.
It is here when I first start posting about it:

UPDATE: Apparent solution for T-Mobile 3G problems:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595108
Fix includes settings as proposed by adwinp below.
Explanation of some settings: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5123531&postcount=46
UPDATE 2:
Well, my problems have vanished "as snow in the sun" (old Dutch proverb)!
Applying the latest radio (JU) and the settings as mentioned by adwinp below made my 3G connection fly again, steady and smooth. Thanks adwinp!
How to modify your build.prop file:
1) Connect your handset via USB, make sure USB debugging is enabled
2) From the Android SDK > tools directory, type the following:
Code:
# adb pull /system/build.prop ~/build.prop
3) Open the file with your favorite editor and append the following lines:
Code:
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 #for USA, use 1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12 #for USA, use 10
ro.ril.enable.a52=1
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 28
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 7
Save the file. Next:
Code:
# adb remount
# adb push ~/build.prop /system/build.prop
# adb reboot
Some sources claim that a second reboot is necessary, check this for yourself.
Good luck!
UPDATE 3:
Seems my joy was short lived; could be that just rebooting was a temporary fix and a good old placebo effect, since I already experienced connection loss again. Sigh. Anyone else with a good idea?
UPDATE 4:
Could this be an MTU issue, like stated here or here? I'd like to know the methods of changing the MTU for 3G, investigating now.
UPDATE 5:
None of the theories above seem to be plausible. Looks like T-Mobile/Orange is the culprit here. Further reading here: https://t-mobile-forum.pocketinfo.nl/showthread.php?p=725207#last (in dutch)
You have either a
1: physical problem with the handset
2: network problem (check if other ppl within the same network have the same problem)
Try playing with these values in /system/build.prop
ro.ril.enable.dtm = 1 # you might want to disable this one, although it doesn't hurt
ro.ril.hep = 1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.enable.a52=1
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 28
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 7
# Default network type 0 => WCDMA Preferred.
ro.telephony.default_network = 0
These settings come from my ROM, which has been tested on various networks in Poland, Germany and Mauritius.
3G performance is flawless.
I have been having this very same problem, and I know others have too. it is strange but has only happened since the newer 2.1 builds have been out.
After lengthy conversations with the high technical team at Orange UK they diagnosed my problem as for some reason the phone is trying to connect to two 3g radio towers at the same time (usually should connect to only one) basically this is confusing the phone.
What the fix seems to be is:
- *#*#4636#*#*
- phone options
- ping test (will probably fail)
- change to "GSM ONLY" - for 30 seconds or more NOT LESS!!
- ping test (should succeed)
- then change back to "WCDMA Only" or "preferred"
- ping again (should now work)
If this does not fix it then you have two more options
- take the sim out the phone for 30 seconds (this is the minimum required time to disconnect your phone from the towers your on)
- OR airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Then try the above again and all should be working.

Do you have any reference information for these settings? I'll try to look it up myself but I can't fiddle with them unless I know what the possible values are and at least know what each setting is used for

Interesting reason; you think this could be related to the fact that the latest VillainROMs stem from CDMA ROMs? What I still don't get is that speech and GPRS traffic are unaffected, these just work.
I already tried your fixes several times but for me they don't work everytime. Ah well, hopefully the official 2.1 update does some good here

I don't think a CDMA source is the issue here.
I've ported a CDMA to GSM with no problem whatsoever.
You could always try replacing libreference-cdma-sms.so, libreference-ril.so, libril.so and libhtc_ril.so from a GSM ROM.
Im also on T-mobile NL with unlimited web n walk
i dont have that issue, and i am currently on aHero 0.7 with latest radio,
also havent encountered the problem on other 2.1 roms
i hope this is some additional information
I always run into this problem as well on all of the 2.1 ROMS pretty much. I'm on the 3 network in the UK. Basically I never had this problem with any of the modaco 1.5 ROMS.
Awesome. Thankyou!
This has fixed my annoying 3G issues, Exactly as you describe.
What exactly is the solution?
Update 2 - First post.
Previously browsing maps would stall and the "up" arrow be stuck on, with the "down" one empty. I say maps, but anything really that uses the data connection. Most often going into Airplane mode and back again fixed it. Now it just works, and quickly too.
BTW - I'm on orange UK.

So just adb those values into the build.prop file and now everything is fine?
Yep. Thats basically all I did, I did a remount, pulled the build prob to my local, edited it, then pushed it back.
First reboot then I had connectivity, but the status bar showed it not being registered on the network. Second reboot and it was all good. A consitent 3G/H signal and no stalling of data transfers.

I edited my OP, since I experienced connection loss again. How is it holding up for you?
Great topic J0bro.
I am having exactly the same problems as you describe. I was just searching the web since at first i couldn't find anything usefull here. I just went back to see if there were some new rom updates and i saw this topic.
I am now running villain 5.2 and latest radio. I was already experiencing the same probs a while back but not as much as i am now. It seems that when I try to open an app on the market i get a lot of connection errors. The switching between the 3g and H takes too long and times out.
I now have a stream running on stream live radio and that uses my H connection. Once it is continuously using H it seems just fine......
Strike that italic part.... When i was typing that it disconnected went back to 3G and lost connection. Now its switching back and forth between 3G and H
Damn this sucks man. I will try the part of of the build.prop....
Pff and i just got my debricked hero back
FYI I am on t-mobile NL with web n walk plus

Just put it underneath the rest in the build.prop and rebooted twice.
Did I do that right?
Hi there which 2.1 Rom did u try?
On tmobile UK and had same 3g problem with stock rom but its fixed now. Only been testing with villainroms. Version 3.4 and 5 beta2 works perfect, the legend based one doesn't work and has same 3g problems. So its probrqbly not universal across 2.1 roms

Other issue i have identified is, Key lights keep on even after power off :/
Turn off Wifi on your phone and turn off the Router for a few minutes. Turn it back on and turn Wifi back on your phone. If that doesn't work go to advanced wifi options on your phone by going to the wifi settings and press the menu button(left of Home Button) and pick Advanced, set the Regulatory domain to a low channel and Wifi policy to Never and see if that helps.
If it still doesn't work set a static IP to 192.168.0.9 and Gateway to your Routers gateway that can be found out clicking on start,run,typing cmd to pull up the command prompt and than typing ipconfig. Set Subnetmask to 255.255.255.0
If it still doesn't work maybe you may need to Replace the Router ?

It could also be a problem with the kernel. You could just try flashing a new one from a zip file.

So your phone can't even see your Router at all? or can it see it but it doesn't connect? if it can't see it at all than it is most definitely broken. Try setting the router to a low channel.

Problem is i bought it from a guy on classified :/ Now I can't contact him or return Wanna know whether there is a solution.
Not sure what you mean by erasing IMEI since you need that for your phone to function?
can you post up what your phone tells you when you dial *#1234# and *#06#
Ah right I see. I couldn't tell from my phone.
I think the best thing would be to flash a stock ROM, use USB jig to reset flash counter and the send it to a repair centre even though you don't have a receipt they should be able to get warranty info from the IMEI.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

ya buddy...had this same problem...check your mail inbox...
I have the same problem with my newly bought Samsung Galaxy S2.
After running nicely for one month, the wifi has suddenly stopped working. I will explain the symptoms here so that someone can please help me. Its really urgent.
The wifi refuses to detect any networks. In my computer and other mobile phone, there are atleast three wifi networks which are being scanned. The wifi on the Galaxy S2 turns on, scans for a while and then turns off again.
On repeatedly trying to turn on the wifi, or using the home screen wifi toggle button, the phone hangs and the wifi icon turns light green.
If I try to switch off the phone, the keyboard lights at the bottom stay on - until I remove the battery manually.
Have tried a factory reset and flashing the phone with different firmwares downloaded from the net. Still no luck. Can someone please tell me whether this is a software problem or is my hardware bust?
Thanks in advance.

I'm having this issue since 3-4 days. The phone was working perfectly, and I remember I switched it off for a couple of hours. When I came back and turned it on, the wifi started acting up.
I don't recall exposing it to water. I have a problem with sweat though, sticking on the screen. I had showed it to a Samsung rep, he said it is due to moisture. Don't trust him though. Have again given it to another rep. Let's see tomorrow.

[Q] Phone Network Issue

I am having a problem with my phone that I'm hoping isn't a radio issue. I live on the very edge of a signal and often totally lose it. However, moving just a few yards away from my house gives me a strong signal. The issue I'm experiencing is a message "Not registered on network" when I try to make a call. Sometimes simply putting the phone in airplane mode and then taking it out of airplane mode fixes the issue. Other times I have to restart the phone. Is there a setting I can change so the phone radio hunts for a signal once it loses a signal.
Can anyone explain why a weak signal would result in a "Not registered...." message?
Thanks in advance.

Desperate for some intelligent assistance! Note 3 N900T

First off, to save time, my phone:
Galaxy Note 3 N900T
Rooted
Straight Talk, Pre paid
No Sim Card
A.V. 5.0
Status is:
network: unknown
sig strength: -103 dBm 5 asu
net type: IWLAN
service state: voice: out of service/Data: in service
roaming: no
mobile net state: Disconnected
device status: custom
Keeps saying I'm not registered on network, my bill is paid, no new updates or software installed, didnt play around with settings. but 2 things happened in succession
1. I replaced the charging port, and it did work after that.
2. I forgot to charge it, it went dead, when I turned it back on it was stuck in a loop on the T mobile screen, I managed to boot it into download mode and restarted it.
I haven't been able to connect since, and my desktop, screen settings reverted to default?? but as far as I can tell everything else is the same except for this connection issue.
I wouldn't be on here bugging anybody except for the fact that every fix Ive looked at, and searched for tells me to check a sim card that I don't have, and I've tried googling similar issues with my configuration (no sim) with no luck..
So here I am looking for someone that could at least point me in the right direction, I'm in a bad situation and having my phone is criticle, to say the least. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you

Question No WiFi after February update!

I know there's a topic for February update, but I want to address wifi issue in a separate one, so we could easily maybe find a solution.
I have tried so far to clear network settings with no success at all. Then rebooted phone, wifi came back, but when phone gets to sleep (screen lock), wifi will turn off and no way to turn back.
Then from Google Pixel 6 telegram group was a suggestion to stop Adaptive Connectivity, so I stopped it, rebooted phone, but at some moment wifi was gone once again and you can't turn it on.
Please reply here with some tricks that we want to try to fix the problem. I don't want to root or modify phone, but if there's no other option - I will do it.

If you haven't unlocked your bootloader, your options are very limited. You could try sideloading the OTA and see if that helps.
For an unlocked bootloader I would suggest simply reflashing the baseband image, but that isn't possible if the bootloader is locked.
Have you tried clearing cache in the recovery environment?

There's no wipe cache in stock Recovery.

I'm sorry, I am so new to P6 that I didn't know this. I saw that the P6 takes some effort to get into stock recovery (wow! power off, boot with volume down and power keys, freak out a bit at the sick robot image, then use keys to scroll to recovery mode). I just assumed there would be a wipe cache in the wipe data/reset option. I've never seen a phone without that option, as far as I can remember. What a weird thing to omit!
Did you try doing it from the Settings app? (Storage... free up space... cleaning... junk). On past phones I've had less success doing it from this kind of menu than from doing it from recovery, but worth a try.
I won't reset my phone. It's my daily driver and I have read already an article that reset doesn't clear the issue.

I haven't seen any workarounds for this bug as of yet. Let's hope Google gets on it. Maybe a Carrier Services update or something will fix it. Btw, I don't have this problem (knock on wood).
I only have it installed for 9h but so far is working fine for me.

You might have hit on something. After the update I still hadn't installed the latest beta carrier services which was 91. 424 or something. Right after I updated I had 3 updates CS being one of then to 92.x. They wouldn't install so I was like wtf all 3 pending. Rebooted nothing. Then I turned off wifi and all updated fine. Turned back on wifi and no problems since. I didn't test the wifi but now it seems reasonable that was the culprit. Can't be sure though.
My WiFi Mac address is unavailable, I would guess that's the reason I can't turn on wifi.
definitely experiencing wifi issues. would reboot device, wifi would need to be turned on, then it connects to my wifi and works fine, put the phone down and come back in a couple of minutes, its no longer connected to the wifi and I can't even turn wifi on. updated carrier services like bobby did and it's still behaving the same. I did the feature update before the security update and wasn't having this issue so this is directly tied to the security update. Pixel 6 128GB bought through Google, so which image do I downgrade to? I see there were two Nov 2021 global updates

November? If you're going to downgrade why not use the January one, why go that far back?
For me wifi works after network reset yesterday but i never had the described problem that wifi turns off when phone is locked and can not be turned back on. Instead of that yesterday i noticed that when phone locks at some point in time it does not have internet anymore despite the fact that it shows to be connected to wifi. Turn off and on wifi fixed it for some time. I did network reset yesterday afternoon and have not seen this behavior since that time.
I am having hotspot issues. I setup the pixel 6 as a hotspot for my other devices to use on the go, it worked for two days since I updated the device, but today suddenly none of my other devices can connect to the hotspot (the hotspot is discovered and the other devices can connect to it, but cannot access internet)

I did network reset 10 times maybe already and still no Wi-Fi after that. Only option is to reboot phone, but fix is for some minutes until phone get locked.
If I put screen time out to 10 minutes, then Wi-Fi is working just fine. At some point I touch the phone and another 10 minutes Wi-Fi is OK. If I change time out to my default 30 seconds, then I have no Wi-Fi in 1-2 minutes...

That doesn't help as several users in the reddit + google threads confirmed, neither does a factory reset which Google still likes to recommend
I too have no wifi and this is a major problem for me.
Not rooted yet. How do I revert to January?

Only one way. Full wipe of device, by unlocking the bootloader. And only if it's unlockable. Or turn off wifi and wait for the fix.
