Trouble with my WiFi (possible MAC Address trouble) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I came to you as my last option, I already checked in 2 other forums and you seem to be the one who knows best about this kind of issues.
I have a I9100 phone (with gingerbread 2.3.4 updated via Kies), it has like 6 months old or so, the thing is yesterday I was at my gf house and I tried to connect to her WiFi but it seems like the green button was kind of dark and it didn't connect at all, like it froze sometimes.
I used to reboot the phone and nothing seemed to work, so I forgot about it for like an hour and when I checked it, it was working with the WiFi with no problem, I thought this was just some minor issue, but later that day the problem became a mayor thing because I couldn't connect to the WiFi no matter what I did or how much I waited. I know my way around computers and I could identify that in the wireless option the Mac Address option said "UNAVAILABLE".
Looking in the forums they said this happened because of the kernel and it seemed to go away with just upgrading the stock, so I found a very good upgrade and I did it via Odin, so now I have ICS 4.0.3 with the following configuration:
BASEBAND VERSION: I9100XXLPX
KERNEL VERSION: 3.0.15
[email protected] #k3-25
BUILD NUMBER:
IML74K.XWLPG
Searching for this on the web I found something about the MAC ADDRESS in the nvram file, but when I checked that file, in the "macaddr" part it says a Mac Address that I think is the one that should be, so I'm a little but confused because the file says I have a MAC Address but the options on the phone doesn't (?)
I've tried the airplane mode, etc... I cannot assign an static IP because I cannot find any network!
Please guys, you are seriously my only hope!!!
Thanks a lot!!!

No one can answer this thread? Seriously? There has got to be a solution!

Hmmmm....Interesting.
So you can use the phone normally otherwise ? (data/calls work OK ?). Check your IMEI in settings/about phone/status. Does it begin with 0044 ? Do not post your actual IMEI here, a yes/no answer will do.
Also, I noticed you're running Speedmod with that LPG rom, I suspect the kernel is causing you problems given WiFi drivers are in the kernel. In the first instance, if I were in your situation, I'd flash that rom again & do a factory reset, and try WiFi with the stock kernel (look in the place/site/thread you got that stock rom from, you might be able to find just the kernel. If you can, just flash the kernel rather than flashing the whole rom).
If the problem is still happening with stock kernel, then we can troubleshoot further. If not, then it's clearly a problem with Speedmod; if that's the case you should perhaps ask for help in the Speedmod thread.
But reflash that rom & get the stock kernel back on & we'll take it from there.

I had EXACTLY the same issue
Solved it by changing my wifi router channel from Auto to 13. Problem solved. For me anyway

[Q] Baseband understanding

My basic understanding is that the baseband is like the firmware that makes the radio in your phone work (calls, mobile internet, wifi etc) right? But that is where my knowledge ends.
Just recently the mobile internet on my streak stopped working. The indicator for mobile internet still shows in the notification bar but any attempts to reach a web site or other connection just times out and fails. Wifi still works perfectly. It's not an issue with the carrier as I have never had to set anything up it has just worked out of the box each time I have updated anything. In any case for info my network is 3uk.
Now I have dropped this phone a few times, admittedly this could be what has caused the damage. On the other hand something might have become corrupted.
So assuming something might have got corrupted I'm thinking it could be the baseband but as I don't know much about them I'm not sure.
I have used QDL tool many times and had various versions of streakdroid on my streak. I have just about mastered the recover/restore/install procedure however in my ignorance you might say I have not learned much about basebands. I always try to learn the things I need as I go along and till now have not had to worry.
Here's the dumb questions I need answers to:
Do basebands come with each build of android? I mean rom downloads either official or streakdroid. I got the impression they did but not sure. I normally use streakdroid since v1.5.1
If they don't come with the roms where can I download an up to date baseband to see if it will fix my problem?
So far I have used QDL tool using the guide on streakdroid. Following that I install streakmod then use that to install streakdroid 1.9.0
Should I try installing any other rom?
Any other suggestions or tips of how I could get my mobile internet working?
Thanks in advance for any help!!
Have you looked at your APN settings?
Select Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names
(might not be the exact name of the menus) but i know its under Wireless & Networks. Might need to reset the APN to default or search and reselect it.
Hi Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have tried to do the search to reselect it but it just searches for a long time as if its hung. Reset to default didn't change anything. (3 three.co.uk stayed putt)
Also I have completely reset my phone to factory default and back to latest streakdroid a few times. In the past I've not had to touch APN it just works after installing whatever rom.
I think I've already tried the most obvious things.
Would flashing the latest baseband help? Assuming it doesn't already come with the latest streakdroid. If it does then its looking like I am screwed unless there is anything else I could look at??
HELP!
Have you tried your USIM in another phone. 3 may have blocked your Internet access as you are using a non-3 phone.
What does your about screen say for your baseband version and stuff?
Baseband version
GAUSB1A130500-EU
Regarding "non-3 phone" I hope thats not the case. I've never had an actual "3 phone" I always use unlocked phone's. Prior to this one an omnia and prior to that a k850i neither of which are 3 phones. I will try the sim in another phone see what happens now. Let you know.
IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO UPDATE TO THE BELOW BASEBAND FOR 1.5.1+
Baseband File Download:
Primary Download Site: http://downloads.streakdroid.com/djsteve/amss.mbn
Mirror 1: http://mirror2.streakdroid.com/amss.mbn
I guess u missed this part when flashing 1.9. The recommended baseband for 1.9 is 318.
Delltech you are right I did overlook that. However going back to your last point that 3 may have blocked my internet access. I think your right!! I just tried my sim in another phone and that can't connect to the internet.
Anything I can do if they have blocked my internet??
Call them and speak to tech support, they've got a bunch of cool techies who'll sort it out right away.
Will do.... Thanks!

[Q] WPA + AES = problem ?

Hi everyone.
I have recently upgraded my SGA from original 2.2.1 to 2.3.3 XXKPE and i have detected an issue when i try to use the WPA + AES combination. The phone detects the wifi but it tries to validate the password a few times and then it is disconnected...
When i tried to connect with the older firmware (Froyo 2.2.1) i could connect the first time but when i lost the connectivity my wifi changed it's state to error and the only way to reconnect was restarting the phone.
No issue detected with WEP or WPA + TKIP.
Anyone else has the same problem? If not, can you tell me your firmware version?
Many thanks in advance
Same situation: S5830 + ASUS WL500W works only with WPA TKIP. But with TKIP speed is limited to 54mbps. Android OS 2.3.4
Just picked up a Samsung Galaxy Ace running stock Android 2.3.4 (baseband S5830LUBKP7, kernel 2.6.35.7-perf-CL366939 [email protected] #1), and seem to be having this same problem.
My home wifi is set to WPA2 Personal+AES, and when the correct passphrase is entered, the Ace just continuously cycles through "Connecting... Disconnected", over and over.
If I drop back to WPA Personal+AES, I get the exact same thing. *However*, if I drop to WPA Personal+TKIP, the phone connects immediately.
I really don't want to use TKIP, as it has known exploits. Is there a known FOTA update for a US-market, unbranded Galaxy Ace that fixes this, or is there any known workaround except "don't use AES"?
try DDKQ6
after flashing DDQK6, reboot phone and enter PIN
then reboot again but in recovery and install CWM5
reboot and wipe data/cache/dalvik and reboot

Thanks for the info. I'm new to flashing phones, would kinda like to stay stock if possible, since this is my wife's phone, not my own. Am I correct in thinking DDQK6 is an Indian firmware? If so, what would differ from US-market firmware, and would I potentially lose any features or cause any unusual behavior by switching to it?

Just update it over the air from setting -> about/phone -> update.
Make sure you have backed up the data like contacts and sms.
Hey, hey!! Problem with wifi? I'm an expert on this But I came with bad news, though.
What I found out:
There's indeed a bug that prevents us from connecting to this kind of wireless (eduroam, in my case). Everything seems to come from a buggy version of wpa_supplicant, everything goes well but then, in the second phase, it seems to "forget" the password or something (I'm not an expert, sorry, can't explain any better) I've been trying to change it, but no luck.
I've tried most of the stock firmwares, and custom roms as well. No luck, still the same bug.
There's an app that claims to fix the problem. wifi ace if I remember well (advanced config editor). But it didn't fix anything for me. You may want to give it a try.
I was expecting for samsung to fix it, but I've lost my faith on it. Neither google seems to be doing anything, as the bug remains on android 4.0.
I can provide you with some links, in case you want to read more about. And please, let me know if you find something.

No need to be sorry. You're replying to a thread that's current, in that I replied to it with my own problem. (And I did so because it was the only thread that came up in the Ace forum on a search for AES, which seems to be specific to the problem. Didn't seem to make sense to start a new thread when this one covers the same topic.)

[Q] Wifi Problem !

Hey guys !
To begin with, I have searched and searched and have not been able to get help.
Phone stats :
Model GT - I9100
Android - 2.3.5
Baseband:
XXKI4
The problem is, I turn on wifi, it scans, then turns off. I have tried adding a wifi and it comes up "unable to save the network".
I got this phone 2 days ago from a friend.
Mac address and IP address are listed as "Unavailable" in advances settings.
PLEASE HELP!
Tried a hard reset?
Thanks for a quick reply !
I have tried:
Power button and home button (holding)
Factory reset. (Home + Power + Volume up)
Are either of them classified as a "hard reset"
I'm sorry, I am very new to android and have just moved over from apple. Not looking to go back just hoping to clear up this issue !
Yeah, that's one way to do one.
You should try updating your device. Your firmware is pretty outdated.
Either with KIES (crap software, but simple - you know, just like iOS ;-) ) or Odin/Heimdall (little harder, but works for sure).
Tell me if you need help.
Hey, updated to ICS using odin after researching all about roms and kernals and what not.
It did fix the issue of the phone constantly in a loop of turning itself off (HOORAY). Wifi is still not working
Then try a Rom that isn't based on Samsung's. Flash the resurrection edition of CM9 via Odin and after that the latest nightly via cwm. It's worth a shot, as CM comes with its own kernel and such.
If it's working under CM it was some sort of software fault and we can try to figure it out (unless you want to stick with CM).
If it doesn't, it looks like a hardware fault and I cannot help you.

S2 Wifi gets connected really slowly on ICS 4.0.4

Hi XDA-developers,
It seems to be an old problem, but it's quite annoying... I was hoping that the new released ICS 4.0.4 could fix this bug, but unfortunately, no.
My phone:
Android 4.0.4
Baseband: I9100XXLQ5
Kernel: 3.0.15-i9100xxlq5-cl753921
Build number: IMM76.XXLQ5
I was using 4.0.3. When I wake up my phone from screen lock, and then immediately turn on wifi, networks can be found and shown, there is a sign with a grey "?" saying that wifi networks are available, but wifi will not be connected immediately. Instead, it will freeze for a little while. Then it will do auto-scanning the networks 1 ~ 2 times, and connect wifi ~30 seconds to 1 min after.
I have tried pretty much every method that has been recommended: Wifi Fixer, Wifix Manager, change to static IP, change frequency to 2.4Hz, etc. However, I have to say no method worked.. Then I tried to update it to 4.0.4, expecting that the new version has fixed this bug. UNFORTUNATELY, it is not solved. The only problem is that it takes about 1 minute to get connected.
There is an issue which discussed this problem (not exactly the same, but similar, they suffered from totally frozen and re-booting).
Issue 28036 Android
Does anyone know how to solve this issue? I'm not sure if it is samsung's problem, or the ICS ' s problem .. Why did they "ignore" us???

Hi, I am using ICS 4.0.3 with XXLPQ Kernel. I have faced some serious WIFI turning on Problems for about 2 months, not paying much attention, however I am now frustrated with this time waiting process and restarting my phone when it shows blank face to me.
I have gone through all the forums and said, 2.4ghz enabling, proc-ing the mem bytes size for memory increment and other said restart tools. I have now tried my very own method that blinked in my head, I thought just why not reflash with the same kernel from my Phone using CWM manager. Clockworkmod Manager and then targeted the same old Kernel File to flash my kernel. Now it's working fully functional.
So I recommend, Give it a try, reflashing your kernel with CWM from your phone. If more details are needed, please message me, I will post the needed steps to do so.
the kernel controls your wifi, so try another kernel like the guy above me said

i has the same problem and make a reinstall with odin, and every thing is working nice although a did some test with a firm of argentina (I9100AROLP4) and this one are perfect.:good:
Just root your device and change your kernel can save your problem.I hope so.
Known problem; http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=28036. Rooting, installing Fardjad's WiFix, setting a country code (GB in my case) and increasing /proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes from 3606 to 16384 fixed it for me. None of that should be necessary on the stock firmware of a consumer appliance, though.
EDIT: Actually, if WiFi connects, it might not be this issue after all. It is a problem in many (all?) official ICS 4.0.3, though. If by "internet is still not working" you mean the stock browser force closes before you can do anything with it, you'll need to go into settings->applications->all->[browser name] and clear cache and data. You'll lose your bookmarks, history and cache, so back those up first if you want to keep them.
Hi , I updated to this same build version today (form the first post), and I did notice that the wifi is working, however the download arrow of the wifi icon on the notification bar keeps blinking all the time. Is this normal?

Are you on about the up and down arrows on the Wifi icon? This is normal this just shows the up arrow as uploading and the down arrow as downloading data. All part of the ICS UI.
Piece of advice root your phone install custom kernel and Rom. You will not go back to stock ever again!!!
Thx for the reply. Yes those are the arrows I'm refereing to, but the thing that seems odd is that whenever the wifi is connected the down arrow keeps blinking regardless if I'm using anything (apps or browsing) on the internet or not.
As for the custom roms/root, I will get to those yet.. First I'll try rooting and then I might move to a custom rom. I actually got very used to the stock rom, but I know once I start changing it will be a one way road.. lol

I had a similar problem when I updated to ICS 4.0.3. I did a factory reset on my router which sorted it out.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
In my case it doesn't seem to be draining more battery, its just the blinking that I found curious...
Not sure the router has anything to do with it but I will keep this in mind for possible fixes...
thx

Your Wifi always looks for the router hence the down arrow downloading data which is very minimal. Your router gives you an IP address which lets you have internet. Your wifi checks for internet even if you are not using it. This is why its best to turn wifi off if you are not using it as it does drain your battery. Custom kernels have sorted this out when your phone "sleeps" it doesnt wake up even if your wifi is on.
Root first, Backup backup backup second, then install a custom kernel (this is the most important part of the phone) and then a custom rom. Seriously stock hasn't nothing on Mod. Think about it.....
