Idle battery drain problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have no idea what's happening, but this has been going on for a while. I have an unlocked galaxy s ii, and I love it, but lately the battery drain has been unbearable. If I just play a video on it I can probably get 5 hours of screen on time, which seems pretty good to me, but if its sitting in my pocket the battery just keeps going down. Once it went down 8 percent in five minutes doing absolutely nothing. Facebook also takes away way too much battery. Could someone recommend some apps to monitor battery usage and possibly tell me what to do? Thanks

[Q] 60 percent idle battery usage / 15 hours

I am having huge issues with my battery on my galaxy s2. It drains really fast, 60% over the last 15 hours this night when the phone has been idle. This has been an issue for about a week now; I cannot seem to find a solution? I have tried various roms, wiping and doing a clean install, but the problem continues. Currently using lightening rom 3,2.
Do anyone know what can be causing this battery drain? Is the battery defective??
What apps do you have installed?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
That is quite a drain I can see there. The drain might be caused by having too many widgets or having too many applications open. If you plan to put it on standby, do close those apps that are not important to you.
Have you tried rebooting?
I have a stock lightening rom 3,2. no apps installed, except titanium backup pro and opera mobile. I have frozen all kinds of stuff in titanium to try find the cultprit, but without success. As you see, no apps except andoid OS is running. Same drain on villainrom, lightening. Don't know what can be causing the error. Is there some way to check if the phone or the battery it self is to blame?
Try with screen on - normally I think that should run for 6 hours or so. Using that as a reference, you can check to see if the energy stored in the battery is normal. It doesn't look like your OS is staying overly active to me.
Hi bjorninge,
Every time after you flash a new ROM you should calibrate your battery.
Get the app "battery calibration" from the market and follow instructions and please report back whether you can achieve better performance.

I have a similar issue, as was the same with my captivate. I have stock ROM on my GS2 though, the way I got it out of the box pretty much. Android OS takes up most of the battery usage. I don't know what it is. Widgets updating constantly? The constant syncing from Gmail/push email?
Well that's surprising! Awake and Screen On bar is quite low and totally synchronized, yet 60% drain, now I gotta say it's weird.

Unfortunately, I have the same issue as you've described above. I am running on stock KE2 kernel and the battery drain is quite a lot. The 'Android OS' is always consuming a lot of processor time on standby mode.
This needs to be fixed A.S.A.P.!
Download and install the app BetterBatteryStats from Android section, it is a very useful app which will show what Awaking the device from deep sleep and processes too. For me, it was the damn Latitude stuff going on background and wasn't letting the device to go to deep sleep.

Thanks for the tip. I have downloaded the app now. what spesifically should I look for?
You just look under 'Wakelocks' and you will know what apps are causing the Awake, then you could take further steps.
Regards.
Would be great if you could look at the screenshot and tell me if something is wrong. Also, after the battery calibration, I've "only" lost 26% the last 7 hours mostly idling. I don't see anything abnormal in the screenshot I provided :/
Well nothing is wrong imo as everything is very low. You should check those which are using more than 10 mins Wakelock, some seconds doesn't matter actually. And you can post any query further to the original thread of this app, here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Regards.
OK, So I'm now back to 12% battery usage (from 100% to 88%) with 17 hours and 30 mins on battery, which IMO is normal.
What did I do? Well, I removed the battery and put the rest of the phone into the stove for an hour on 50-60 degreed celsius. My 98% android OS usage is gone and the battery works as normal .I also had problems with the phone constantly going into "car mode" which is now gone.
I got some tips around the internet that my issues were all related to moisture on the inside of the phone.

[Q] Hello Everyone.

Hello everyone,
From yesterday i started facing a strange issue due to which i am experiencing serious battery draining issues.
My battery started draining 1-2% every 5 min in idle mode after i played a game named crazy fist . next day i factory resetted my phone. In idle now it is not consuming any power but when i do some work on my phone , it consumes alot of battery and it.drins like 1% every 2-2.5 min.
Charging time is normal. But discharge is pretty fast.
So i checked thr battery usage inside settings.and noticed that my display is consuming about 41% of the battery and android os arnd 13%. I am not sure qbout os usage but thr diaplay is consuming too much power. I think initially it used to consume 13-20(max)%.
Or is the usage correct? I am using sgs2 stock midel and have no intentions to root it.
Kindly assist and reply asap. Thanks in.advance,
Siddhanth
the display on the galaxy s2 does drain alot of battery if your using it for quite a while..thats what they call screen on time..my battery was draining fast and i panicked... when you do use your phone how long do you use it? say do you use to browse like for a good hour non stop?
if you was rooted i could of gave you some options but here is a link to help you read and give you some tips on battery life...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234264
charge your phone fully and drain it without switching it off..charge it again without taking it off charger i say leave it for a good few hours...do the same thing for a few charging cycles and see what the battery like is after that..but check the link
But this strange thing happened to me aftrr 1month.
I wss never rooted.
I mean this is the first time my display is consuming 59-61% of the overall battery. is this normal and does it hsppen to u too?

i thought the same as you buddy. never realised it in the start when i had my s2 but then checking the battery usage and i panicked...its normal for the display to drain the battery alot..
change your brightness to auto and there is an option in settings and display where you can tick to have the display autoadjusted. thats for brightness..
or do what i do and have your brightness on the lowest settings and see how it goes from there...fully charge your battery let it say for 6 hours then let it drain till it dies down without any breaks and then charge it again to the max..do the same thing for a few times and check whats the battery after a few days...

when calibrated your phone you leave it on of course and charge it without any interuptions...when you let it drain with out any breaks like switching it on and off, once it dies down then plug to charge it.....it will charge and it will give you the battery icon...once its fully charged you can see by the battery when its fully green switch your phone and your good to go...

i didnt even play.. i didnt launch the game... and it shows up on my battery stats
Ive been playing since I downloaded it and it only used up 4%. Maybe it's your rom.
Getting exact same issue battery drain from temple run only played it twice when it came out running stock 4.0.2

I noticed that today too, and its because it uses the ''magnetic sensor'' every minute, since unplugged, lame as app.
Solution: use autostarts app, disable all its processes, and reboot. problem fixed.
Same issue here. Running stock 4.0.4.
Even if I don't open the app for days, I see it near the top of the list of apps using the battery, although there's no information regarding how long the app was active in the background and doing what. Sometimes the % goes as high as 15%! Immediately uninstalled and reported it to Imangi. Hopefully, they'll get it fixed asap.
Everyday it is using about 2-3% of my battery even though I haven't played it for a week and have charged my battery all the way, thus resetting the stats.
If anyone has any resolution, let me know. I am going to reboot and hope that makes it go away.
Figured out the same this morning.
everything was normal with my HoX from the beginning of the night, it slept well etc.
Then in the morning I jumped into my car with %95 battery and drove about an hour to work.. It wass all the time in my pocket.. and it drained to %91..
"Temple Run 2" (com.imangi.templerun2) using 15% of my battery
Xperia S (latest stock firmware). Same problem.
Battery stats always displaying "Temple Run 2" (com.imangi.templerun2) using 15% of my battery.
Restarting changes nothing.
Edit:
Maybe I don't understand how battery stats work?
Once you unplug the charger, and drain your battery, what will battery stats display? Apps that were running and had used certain percentage of power? Or Apps that are CURRENTLY using?
Sometimes i will get force close also, all high score gone.

Did you just flash a rom, kernel or model? You usually have to let it go through a few battery cycles before the true battery life is known.
You can also download better battery stats from xda, and cpu spy from play store to see your wakelocks and if your tab is deep sleeping

FYI, I didn't do anything on my tab, is just that its battery suddenly drain very fast. I will try the suggestions of yours.
rapid battery drain
Hi,
I was having the same problem on my unrooted Tab 10.1 a couple of weeks ago. This progressed to it barely keeping up with the amount of battery discharge during use. At first I assumed the cord was wornout. B ut when new corde arrived no better. Now determined to be bad female end on tab itself as charging was positional, while it still worked at all. Upside? New tab arrives tomorrow. Hope this helps.

[Q][SOLVED] HELP Sudden Battery Drain

This is what happened...
yesterday at 7:00 AM my phone was at 98% Battery
Only Flight mod and Power saver mod was enabled,
Every thing else was disabled
Then i left home without taking my phone ( It was on my bed i forgot to take)
Later i returned home at 2:00 PM
And found my phone very hot.
Now the battery is at 14%
It says 88% of Battery was used for Android OS
Then i turned off my phone
After some time heat went off...
Then i turned on and plugged in for Charging
It Took 4 hours to charge 24% :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Can anyone please explain whats happening ???
It sounds like something is keeping the cpu running, which is why android is is so high and explain the battery loss and heat. You could go into your settings and look at the running apps in applications manager, and see if anything is out of the ordinary.

Could be something like mediascanner scanning the sdcard if you hve one. GSAM and BBS are good apps to check wakelocks. The latter is better but it's a pay for app.

The best app IMHO is BetterBattery Stats. It's not free though, but it's a great asset. I have the widget on my home screen at all times. If you're not in a position to pay for an app, try GSAM, but BBS IS better. This will only be good until you pull the battery though so you need to ensure you check before rebooting. It will show you which apps are keeping the phone awake etc.
