[Q][SOLVED] HELP Sudden Battery Drain - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is what happened...
yesterday at 7:00 AM my phone was at 98% Battery
Only Flight mod and Power saver mod was enabled,
Every thing else was disabled
Then i left home without taking my phone ( It was on my bed i forgot to take)
Later i returned home at 2:00 PM
And found my phone very hot.
Now the battery is at 14%
It says 88% of Battery was used for Android OS
Then i turned off my phone
After some time heat went off...
Then i turned on and plugged in for Charging
It Took 4 hours to charge 24% :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Can anyone please explain whats happening ???

It sounds like something is keeping the cpu running, which is why android is is so high and explain the battery loss and heat. You could go into your settings and look at the running apps in applications manager, and see if anything is out of the ordinary.

Could be something like mediascanner scanning the sdcard if you hve one. GSAM and BBS are good apps to check wakelocks. The latter is better but it's a pay for app.

1. what rom are you using? 2. slow charging may be due to cable. change the cable and check the result. :good:

Remove new installed apps, check cable, restart your phone...

Now its working fine
Is there any way to find out which app was using my Battery ?

I have the exact same problem but mine hasn't gone away. I can charge it all night and in the morning it will be at like 40%.
It only started after I flashed that leaked firmware. I have since rooted it and frozen out all the bloatware to no avail.
I'd love to hear any suggestions on how to solve this?

Well theres 2 things...
1) Like Laura, drain so excessive that when charging it is slow
2) No drain, just slow charging
Different answers for both situations. Are you 1 or 2?

The best app IMHO is BetterBattery Stats. It's not free though, but it's a great asset. I have the widget on my home screen at all times. If you're not in a position to pay for an app, try GSAM, but BBS IS better. This will only be good until you pull the battery though so you need to ensure you check before rebooting. It will show you which apps are keeping the phone awake etc.

Have you tried another cable for charging ?

What rootSU meant is the app will record data till the time you pull out your battery.

Yep. Best way to get good stats is to charge the phone full, unplug it and go about your business. Try not to reboot. At the end of the day lets see those stats and what we can find out.

Here is the list of apps on my Phone...
I don't have many apps...
I have Flashed my phone just a week ago..
And I haven't got time to restore all my apps again..
So, this is all the apps that i pretty much use now...

[Q] Hello Everyone.

Hello everyone,
From yesterday i started facing a strange issue due to which i am experiencing serious battery draining issues.
My battery started draining 1-2% every 5 min in idle mode after i played a game named crazy fist . next day i factory resetted my phone. In idle now it is not consuming any power but when i do some work on my phone , it consumes alot of battery and it.drins like 1% every 2-2.5 min.
Charging time is normal. But discharge is pretty fast.
So i checked thr battery usage inside settings.and noticed that my display is consuming about 41% of the battery and android os arnd 13%. I am not sure qbout os usage but thr diaplay is consuming too much power. I think initially it used to consume 13-20(max)%.
Or is the usage correct? I am using sgs2 stock midel and have no intentions to root it.
Kindly assist and reply asap. Thanks in.advance,
Siddhanth
the display on the galaxy s2 does drain alot of battery if your using it for quite a while..thats what they call screen on time..my battery was draining fast and i panicked... when you do use your phone how long do you use it? say do you use to browse like for a good hour non stop?
if you was rooted i could of gave you some options but here is a link to help you read and give you some tips on battery life...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234264
charge your phone fully and drain it without switching it off..charge it again without taking it off charger i say leave it for a good few hours...do the same thing for a few charging cycles and see what the battery like is after that..but check the link
But this strange thing happened to me aftrr 1month.
I wss never rooted.
I mean this is the first time my display is consuming 59-61% of the overall battery. is this normal and does it hsppen to u too?

i thought the same as you buddy. never realised it in the start when i had my s2 but then checking the battery usage and i panicked...its normal for the display to drain the battery alot..
change your brightness to auto and there is an option in settings and display where you can tick to have the display autoadjusted. thats for brightness..
or do what i do and have your brightness on the lowest settings and see how it goes from there...fully charge your battery let it say for 6 hours then let it drain till it dies down without any breaks and then charge it again to the max..do the same thing for a few times and check whats the battery after a few days...

when calibrated your phone you leave it on of course and charge it without any interuptions...when you let it drain with out any breaks like switching it on and off, once it dies down then plug to charge it.....it will charge and it will give you the battery icon...once its fully charged you can see by the battery when its fully green switch your phone and your good to go...

Battery drain issue.

Hi guys,
Is anyone having battery drain issues with their new sgs3's?
With my one it wouldn't last 12 hours without dying. Also if its at 100% it'll drop to 70% overnight while i sleep (6-7 hours) and thats with power saver on, sync off and running juicedefender.
Today I factory reset the phone and only installed flash, whatsapp and dolphin browser. Have wifi on, sync, data, gps and bluetooth off. Havent got pictures of battery stats yet since I only reset it half an hour ago.
So is anyone else experiencing battery drain? if so have you fixed it? and how?
Are there any apps I should be aware of that drain the battery?
I would remove juice defender.
Uninstall lightflow app if you are using it.
Use betterbstterystats to identify any wakelocks. The xda thread of the same name will be able to help with solutions.
Other than that follow general tips on increasing battery life that are found all over xda.
This device is easily capable of much better battery life than you are getting.
Good luck.

No issues at all so far, in my case. In fact this is the first Android phone I've owned that has no battery-related issues
Based on my previous experience what you can try doing is (a) install CPU Spy to see if your phone is entering 'deep sleep' appropriately (b) install BetterBatteryStats to identify offending applications.
Even the 'Battery' section in settings is useful -- just check if any apps are keeping the phone awake for longer than you've actually used them ('Stay Awake' number).
ok well ive installed bad ass battery monitor since its free. Also since I did factory restore i charged it to full and in 1 hour 44 mins it used 7% on idle. Going to charge it to full again and use it normally to see how it is.
Only apps ive installed is XDA, badd ass battery, dolphin browser and whatsapp.
maybe you have samsung widgets etc set to refresh every hour or shorter. Or could be Whatapp

Just woke up and about to start work (Australia time). Ive taken a bunch of screenshots from stock battery monitor and from bad ass battery monitor. Will post up when I get home.
Also I installed battery monitor pro but it wont let me select 2100mAh. when I put it 2100mAh and press ok it just goes back to 1500mAh. Battery is currently at 36%.

Not too happy with my battery either. Fully charged over night and its down to 89% 1hr 30 later. Is that normal? However, you did mention lightflow earlier though which I have installed - Is that a massive battery drain? My battery stats seem to show display as being the big culprit but I have brightness set to it lowest setting.
Also, can't seem to find battery monitor pro on play?

I'm on Omega V4.0 and with wifi always on, fully charged 3 hours back and when i woke up it's 95% remaining. So about 1.66% loss per hour in sleep mode. With regular usage and installing and testing different roms and backing up etc them i easily get about 8~10 hours. Phone's made in Korea and battery mfg date is 2012.5.6.
Plus tons of widgets on home screens.

Idle battery drain problem

Hey guys, I have no idea what's happening, but this has been going on for a while. I have an unlocked galaxy s ii, and I love it, but lately the battery drain has been unbearable. If I just play a video on it I can probably get 5 hours of screen on time, which seems pretty good to me, but if its sitting in my pocket the battery just keeps going down. Once it went down 8 percent in five minutes doing absolutely nothing. Facebook also takes away way too much battery. Could someone recommend some apps to monitor battery usage and possibly tell me what to do? Thanks

[Q] Very fast battery draining!

Hello! I bought this phone last month. Since I got it, I've never experienced any problem with it. For four days, I noticed that the battery drains very quickly, without any logical explanation for this. The data connection is turned off, Wi-Fi is turned off. Last evening, I charge it to 100%. This morning,I found it turned off, with 0% battery. What solutions do you have to solve this problem? Have you encountered this problem?

Can you please provide some more details on this?
I.E. What is it plugged into to charge? Laptop, Desktop, AC, etc etc.
- I ask this because I had a phone that would actually consume more power than a USB port could put out. when turning off the laptop, it actually allowed a back drain for some reason, and the next morning the device was dead. (Not this phone)
Also, what applications are running? Any?
Finally, you can try to retrain your battery... Wiping stats does not work, ever. So despite what anyone tells you, don't do it. You're just wasting time. SOURCE
So, how do you retrain your battery? Let it die completely. Then plug it in to charge. Don't use it while it's charging if you can help it. DO NOT remove it from the charger until it's at 100%. Once this is done, use it til it dies on it's own. Then yet again, charge it fully and then go back to your normal use.
In some cases, these batteries can go bad, for various reasons. A quick test, but is not always trustworthy is to spin your battery on either side. If it makes more than 2 full rotations, it's swelling and going out. Replace it.
The best alternative is to take it to a battery shop, and let them put it on a Cadex machine. (Pronounced Kay-Dex) ... This machine will charge and discharge the battery several times over a few hours and truly test the current life -vs- the life it should be. Anything rated less than 80% remaining life should be replaced.
SOURCE: I work here
I charge it only from power outlet, with stock charger.

6 hours 40 minutes from 100% to 10%, and the phone in stand by! Cell standby - 45%, Phone idle - 48%, Screen - 7%
And all this after a hard reset and retrain battery! The battery is almost new (aprox 1 month)!
I want it to make a screen shot of battery drain, but I have no clue how to do that on LG L9...

I attached a screenshot. Yesterday I changed the battery. Same problem! I take it this screenshot this morning, after I fully charged the phone ... Same problem, a new battery.
Can you please tell us what applications you have running in the background?
Also deactivate google now.(or the google services in google maps). download and install GSam Battery Monitor and after a cycle tell us what applications are eating your battery the most. It's clear that you either use yout phone(screen on time) allot or there is/are some applications that prevent your phone from going to sleep.
I use battery widget reborn and it shows me wneh the phone woke up,when the phone had the screen on,wi-fi on,gps on. Try it as well.
I also had battery issues when on JB. I downgraded back to ics. It's much more reliable when it comes to battery life. And the performance is about the same.
I don't have any app installed. After i replace the battery, i made a hard reset and I did not installed any app. I will install cpuspy and betterbatterystats for more results. I will back tomorrow. Until than, maybe you can provide me more advices. It can be from a damage sim card?

I guess your signal quality isn't good enough because cell standby is eating up more than 40% of battery. Cell standby in my phone is only around 5%..

I removed the sim card, but in flight mode is the same problem... The last solution is to change the rom with a custom one. Any recomandation?
It's not that. Not the signal. It's the firmware. JB has these problems. In ICS Display is the major consumer followed by Phone Idle and Cell Standby.
I also had these problems in JB and reverted back to ICS .
I would advise you to install CM 10.1 on the phone. The battery life is better than stock. I get around 12-16 hours normally. The latest RC4 has fixed almost all the bugs present in older CM 10.1 variations. Give it a try.
I will root the phone and I will give a try with CM 10.1 or I revert to 4.0.4. If all this will be for nothing, I will sell the phone!

On ICS you will get great battery life Telling from my experience as i have reverted back to ICS after trying JB and CM 10.1( both have very poor battery life ) . So instead of wasting time just flash ICS and forget about battery issue :good:
Where can I find a tutorial to revert to ICS?
Same question. Can some one please give a step by step guide on how to revert to ics for l9

Use the offline flash..
I also reverted to ICS and the battery drain keeps like a countdown
I have the p769, and I offline flashed up to V20D (and rooted). Removed some tmobile bloat, and I have pretty decent battery life. I guess I'm lucky.

[Q] Urgent! Sudden Rapid Battery Drain, Please Help!

I'm used to getting about 1% an hour from my battery, drains a bit more when I use it heavily obviously.
But suddenly a few days ago, literally it was fine one day and rubbish the next, it started draining very fast, a few % every 30mins.
On Friday after unplugging it for work and the battery was still draining fast, I decided to let it completely drain out and then charge it back up while it was off and see what happened. It was unplugged for 32mins and already on 96% which is not what I'm used to.
I'm not one of those people that are constantly fiddling with their phone installing this, that and the other. I've not installed a new app for months and months.
My usage hasn't changed either, occasional Facebook if I'm not at my main computer, playing solitaire on my break at work, other than that it's mostly email. But I took a few days off work this week so if anything I used it a lot, lot less than usual.
I didn't want to have to but I took my pictures off, noted my numbers down just in case and did a factory reset. Added my apps back on and disabled unnecessary things. While I was sleeping it's gone from 56% to 2% in 9.5 hours!
I need this phone for work tomorrow, can anyone help me please!?
First factory reset.

I did, I wrote it above. Or do you mean do another one?
The last 2% went over 30mins go so I need to charge it before I try anything again

Surely all the Samsung rubbish that's on there will add to the drain? I know it did when I first got the phone last year, I googled around seeing what to disable and it's worked perfect for almost a year now.

Stock drain is not a problem as you post .
Solutions .
Zero its an app draining .
One its the battery .
Two its the firmware .
Three its the hardware .
The stock rom and apps is not going to show that sort of drain .

The only apps I had on there was Facebook, Twitter, eBay, T-Mobile, PayPal, Solitaire, Bejewelled and the National Rail app for train times.
Those had all been on there for months though I hadn't added anything new for a very long time so could it still be an app?
Battery I only had a problem with when I got the phone it just didn't have a very long life which I gathered was a very common problem but I fixed it. I haven't dropped it or taken it out or anything.
When I found I could update to 4.3 I waited a while first but I did eventually update but this was a few weeks ago it's been as normal until this week so unless something has changed in 4.3 I don't think it's that.
Still charging at the moment, nearly halfway.
Right, green light meaning fully charged. I'm about to unplug, switch on and factory reset. What are my next steps?

Can anyone help me please, I need this phone for work tomorrow, how can I test what is draining my battery? Is there a list of things I can disable in applications manager? What are mediaserver and bootanimation, I can't even find those or google services in the list
Media server is your media files .
Boot animation is the animation at boot .
My suggestion would be to download battery calibration app from play . Charge battery to 100% and wipe battery stats .
This will only reset / clear the stats as yours seem a bit odd .
Follow that with Better Batters Stats and run that for a day looking for wakelocks .
Run it for a whole day!? Can I download anything else as I'll need the phone to email/call/play games at work
EDIT: Do you have to pay for better battery stats because I'm not prepared to do that
One further thought search for media scanner fix .
I can't find media scanner fix

I'm losing a few% every 30mins which isn't normal. Is BBS Better Battery Stats? If so, I'm not paying for an app
My phone isn't rooted either, it's as I received it, so I can't use some of these apps
