Get the $30 upgrade fee refunded - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

I just saw the $30 upgrade fee on my bill for upgrading to the Inc4G. Since it's a BS charge, I figured I'd try to get it credited back. I upgraded at Best Buy, so I told the VZ rep that BB never mentioned an upgrade fee and that they just charged me for the phone. VZ said it didn't matter, and while BB should have told me, it's not a BB charge, so no matter how I upgraded, I would've been charged the $30 fee anyway.
I told the VZ rep that that was not acceptable. When I asked what the upgrade fee was for, as in "where does that $30 go? What do I get for that $30?", he couldn't give me an answer. "It's just a new policy", he said. So I asked, "So it sounds like I'm paying $30 for the privilege to remain a VZ customer, is that right?" Again, I got the "policy" line. He insisted that he could not refund the fee. So I asked him what he could do... he put me on hold for about 2 minutes and said that he could credit me 1 month of my unlimited data, which equals the $30 of the upgrade fee. So he did.
Success.
tldr:
Don't let VZ get away with that BS upgrade fee. Complain and get something credited. It's a garbage fee.

Nicely done sir!

I "exchanged" a Nexus for the Inc4, within the 14 day window, and they charged me an upgrade fee as well (I couldn't really understand their logic the way they explained it). They said there was no way that they couldn't charge it -- the system wouldn't let them take it off. I *****ed to the manager at the store (threatened to take the Nexus back...after they did all the paperwork... )and he credited me the $30 as well. I think you just have to be persistent, and not loose your temper. Good job! Let's all get some recovery!

yay!! you gotta use unlimited data more than $30 worth!!!! :good:
But for me, I don't know if I wanna argue them and get the unlimited data because I already have one.. :/ I wish they could just refund!

you're lucky you didn't get hit with the $35 restocking fee.
I had to pay the $30 upgrade fee AND the $35 restocking fee.
Maybe I'll try to argue one of those but I think it will be tough to get both.
I think the $35 has some justification I guess because they had to pay for fedex to pickup my GS3 and for fedex to delivery me a inc4g. Lets say verizon gets 50% off fedex retail rates, thats about $10 each way ($20 total) plus they need a guy to open the box and look at it.

Tmo, att, sprint, they all do upgrade fees, VZW was the last to implement the fee, its an extra revenue point, plain and simple. Its the nature of the beast. Corporate America. Deal with it.

They say that exactly I think it's scripted or something.
Anyway they gave me an extended battery and cover for 30 to appease me.

[Q] $125 Service Credit with Evo 3D

So the Service Credit for switching to Sprint says it ends on 6/23. AND the Evo 3D of course comes out on the 24th. I will be coming from TMO and wanted to get this credit.
Could/Should I just get switched on the 23rd or sooner and just get like an Evo or similar phone and also buy the $50 dollar reserve for the Evo 3d. Then on the 24th switch my phone to the Evo 3D and return the other phone?
Yea as long as you keep the number your porting active for 61 days...
I'm also doing this with two port in numbers from tmobile. So make sure if you start the contract or service at a sprint store you preorder it there....
Or go to radio shack start service and pre order there
Same with best buy....
DO NOT go to sprint to set up service and then pre order from a radio shack or best buy... Pick one of the three and do all of it their or you will lose the port in credit

don't they charge restocking fees or something, i was telling my wife we should do this and she was like it's gonna cost us 70$ per phone to do that.

So you won't have to pay the restocking fee if you are a new customer. Are you sure about that? And I also have another question, if you do this will you lose yourpreoder spot because I saw someone post that you would lose your preorder sport?

Not sure about losing your preorder spot but for new customers, there are no restocking fees. Otherwise it's $35/phone.

so, Im just going to put this out there. In order to save $125 per phone, if it costs you $70 then awesome you still save. So tell your wife that would be a worst case scenario just like my att ends the 27th of June and well If I have to cancel early that costs $60 (Im still working on it being free) but I still save money.

Bought an EVO 3D, but...

Close thread please. how do you do this?
Have you tried calling them and asking what all the fees are about? The retention center # is somewhere floating around here, I hear they are very helpful
everyone gets the 10 dollar charge
if your happy with the phone, i'd say suck it up
if your not happy with it, take it back.
Sprint has never screwed me over, in fact they gave me a $10 credit for having tower issues in my area
ninjamirage said:
Sprint is already trying to screw me by removing a save50 invoice credit, and they are charging me $10 more per month (not taxes) then what it said on my original receipt. I hate to have to return the evo 3d because I like it, but Sprint has a bad reputation of screwing over their customers on the invoice credits. I don't know whether to sue them for cancelling my original order and making me a new order without my approval, or to just cancel it and return the phone.

It is always funny that if a company makes a mistake like this, the first thing people like the OP think about is suing the company. Over what? What phone did you come from? Was it a smart phone? A Razr? All you have to do is call them and explain what the deal is and they will 99% of the time fix it for you.
".....they are charging me $10 more per month (not taxes) then what it said on my original receipt."
In regards to the $10/month, are you referring to the monthly Premium Data fee? It's required on the EVO3D (and on other 4G phones), even if you are on SERO. It may not show on the receipt when you buy the phone but will appear on your monthly statement. Did you get it at a store, online or telesales? I called in my order and they stated very clearly that this phone requires the added monthly fee and exactly how much it was. With online purchasing, it warns you with a checkbox confirmation about the add on monthly reoccurring fee and will not let you proceed to order it without being ok'd by you.
If you enjoy the phone as much as I do then IMO it's worth the extra $10. If you think it's too much, you have 30 days to return it.

this is america dude, we sue over everything D:
The $10 fee is for all smart phones not just 4g ones. The only smart phone that does not require the $10 fee is the Samsung Replenish Android phone.
lol @ trying to sue sprint over an invoicing issue. Lol. Theyll murder you in court.
But in all seriousness, yes all sprint smartphones have the $10 fee except for one. Still comes out cheaper than other carriers data charges. In fact much cheaper and much better value imo
Dude I have just been trying to get the $50 invoice credit that was on my original order, and I've been getting the run-around for two weeks. I understand the $10 fee, even though it wasn't on my original order. But cancelling my order and making a new order without the credit and without notifying me seems shady. Before this I had my Droid X that I flashed to cricket. It's not 4G but it was cheap and reliable. With the phone rooted and optimized, it was pretty quick. I'm on a fixed income, so I can't pay more than $70 per month. When I thought I could get the EVO 3d for $60 per month, I decided to go for it. It just seems deceiving when my invoice says that I will be paying $60 per month plus taxes, then they say it will be $90 per month when I talked to them on the phone. That's a significant difference.

take it back it then, I don't think anyone is paying that low of a monthly cost for the 3d.
OP, create a aol email account. Sprint gives you a %10 discount if you have an aol email account. That would take your bill to about $73. Good luck
".....and they are charging me $15 more per month (not taxes) then what it said on my original receipt"
"It just seems deceiving when my invoice says that I will be paying $60 per month plus taxes, then they say it will be $90 per month when I talked to them on the phone. That's a significant difference."
Although you've made a significant edit to your original post, there's something still not right with your math. You first stated it was higher than you expected at a extra $10/month, then edited to $15, but you say it's now a $30 difference(from the $60 you thought you would be charged per month to $90 that you now claim).
Just tell them you work for your local school district. That's a 15 percent discount.

[Q] Anyone Know How To Avoid The New Activation Fee?

I read a rumor that the $36 activation fee can be waved if you provide Sprint with your AAA card. Anyone done this?
does anyone know of any other way to avoid this "tax"?
I just pre-ordered the EVO LTE and will supposedly be charged the fee upon activation. Do I need to go into a Sprint store and show them my AAA card? Can I do this over the phone? Does it even work?
Thanks.
Idk about AAA. But I am going to try to get the fee waived upon activation by saying I stuck with my sprint order even though I could have got it cheaper through wirefly.
We will see.

Maybe another representative will yield better results.

I'll have to try this when my phone comes in and I activate it.
Thanks
Just and FYI since I said I would report back. I called Sprint and I asked about my activation fee and he initially said that I would have to pay it. I explained that I ordered through sprint even though I could have gotten the phone much cheaper through a 3rd party and I would appreciate it if they would wave the fee to help offset the cost difference. He put me on hold for 1 minute came back and said the activation fee has been waved.
Maybe this route can help some who ordered through Sprint.
To clarify about the AAA activation fee waiving:
You MUST have the AAA discount as your account's discount in order to use this. In other words, if you have an employer discount you use to get 15% off your bill every month, then THAT discount plan must include the fee waiver to get the waiver. You couldn't just flash your AAA card and get it.
So, if you have the AAA as your discount, you will receive 10% monthly off your bill, and waived activation fees. But you cannot mix and match, sadly. I talked to Sprint about this yesterday. Kind of disappointed... I don't want to pay $36 for no reason.

Guess I need to try this route as well. Knowing my luck, I'll get a 'no' person.
It wont hurt to ask when you call to activate it. The worst that could happen is they tell you no and charge you. The best is they wave the fee. I went with 119.00 on wirefly so I can't use the " went with Sprint" argument. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

we shall see if my txt chat skills are up to this challenge once this "ESN storage fee" hits my bill.
If I lose I may ask them to explain how activating my phone costs them money, seems like they ESN goes into the system then blam that is all, once the ESN is in the system I can deactvate and active a month later without a fee, just curious if they have a legitimate reason for the fee,

What if a person with a sero plan (gets free activation) activates your phone on their line, then takes it off.
Now that you're phone's ESN is in their system, you'd be able to switch back to your own phone at no charge (avoiding the activation fee)
You could also call top tier CS. I called the regular CS line earlier today and was denied even after telling them I would just cancel and go to Best Buy he brought a manager on the manager said "we can't waive it so I suggest purchasing it at Best Buy"(Wow really). Thanks for the posting. I too called customer service and got the nope-nope-nope line. I don't understand how Amazon can get the activation waived, yet the person at Sprint today told me it is impossible. Every upgrade requries the $36 fee. I got a tough cookie on my first try.
I never have good luck. Should have waited for Amazon to list the phone. What happened to the days where everybody had the same price on launch day (maybe a $10 difference).

To answer your question the AAA membership will NOT waive upgrade fees, but It will waive the Activation fees. Meaning, if you are signing up with Sprint AAA will waive the fee but if you are a current Sprint customer, upgrading to a new device, unfortunately it will not waive the fee. That said, the AAA discount must be active on the account prior to you coming into the store for an upgrade or AT the time of purchase when signing up with Sprint. It will also save you 10% a month and like someone else has previously stated, you cannot mix discount so if you already have a discount the AAA will not apply.
For some slightly better news, if you go with the Credit Union membership discount, that WILL waive ALL fees, activation AND upgrade fees. It will also save you 10% a month. You just need to be a part of ANY credit union, BECU, Alaksa ect...

You are correct. If you are upgrading an existing line on Amazon you will still be charged the $36.00.
I know this because I called Sprint today. Tried to get them to waive activation fee, they would not again, but I was able to get them to cancel my preorder. So I ordered from Amazon instead (always been a fan w/ no hassle). Still saving $64.00 ($50 on phone & $16 on tax).

Sell VZW GS3 pre-order to get Inc4g help

I know there will be a number of people in the exact same boat as me, and since I'm a moron, I could use the guidance before making a fatal error...
I pre-ordered the S3 prior to June 28th on Verizon to use my available upgrade and lock-in my unlimited plan for another 2 years. However, I do not want this phone and want to get the Inc4G instead.
I know I'll have to sell the S3 and buy the Inc4g off-contract. What I don't know is if I have to activate the S3 on my line prior to selling it. I see all these ebay listings saying the S3 is new and never activated, but when I asked vzw support over email they sort of insinuated that I had to activate the S3 first before selling it as part of the agreement process. Does that sound right?
If so, I guess I activate the S3 when I get it then box it all back up and send it to the eventual CL/eBay buyer - do I have to do anything to wipe the phone at that point for the person that buys it from me?

If I understood you correctly, you already upgraded your line, and so you can activate the s3, and then do whatever you want with it, as long as you keep the line active and pay your monthly bill. I've gotten phones as upgrades, then sold them soon after, the esn remains clean as long as the person who originally bought the phone as upgrade/new line keeps maintaining the line, or they pay the full etf.
In terms of preparing for sale, factory reset the phone before you sell it, that way your personal info is erased. Also, don't forget to wipe the SD card (if it came with one).
You don't have to ebay it. If you go to an actual VZW store and have them do an exchange which comes nicely along with a 35 dollar restocking fee, and not a return/replacement which they will want to do because it gets the sales rep a commission but screws you, you can swap it out in the store and keep unlimited data. The only thing you have to do is before you bring it in to swap it out it must be activated at least once, then you can wipe it or what ever.
Just make sure you talk to a sales rep that isn't a dope.

This! Definitely try an exchange at a Verizon Corporate store before you go through the trouble of selling your GS3 on eBay. There have been numerous people in this forum who've successfully exchanged phones without having their data plan changed, but a few folks haven't been as lucky. It's definitely worth a shot though.

...it's that part that worries me and after it's all said and done, they're like 'whoops, you lost unlimited. sorry bro, you only need 2gb anyway so what's the big deal - it's totally better this way'
I'll definitely go the exchange route first, though, before dealing with eBay - although it looks like I'd come out ahead $-wise with eBay.
Thanks for the help.
Thanks, I also plan to do this when I get my phone. I pre-ordered to retain my unlimited data.
Since the Inc4g is $149 and the GS3 is $199, do you get $50 back (then the restocking fee)?
I may still do the ebay route depending how much money I can get for it and how much cheaper I can buy an inc4g for. I also noticed the ads all say "unopened" "clean esn" "ready to activate"
If you are required to activate your phone prior to switching, then how do these ebay people do it?
Once I get the Inc4g, do I just activate using the setup on the phone or do I need to call in? If I activate the SG3, then buy an inc4g and activate that, then does that mean the SG3 now has a "clean esn"
Correct me If Im wrong , but I was under the impression if you go and EXCHANGE your SG3III box UNOPENED they will NOT charge a restocking fee.

I heard that if you do that (or any exchange), you lose your unlimited. But I've heard different stories.
When I called my local verizon store and asked if I could retain my unlimited data when exchanging the phone they said no. I guess I could try calling a different location or something...

You should be fine with not losing unlimited. The only way you can lose it is if you upgrade your phone with a new contract. I would assume if you upgraded the line already the contract should be in place. You can log into your account and see when the upgrade dat eis.
I called my local verizon store today and they told me they would accept the s3 and I would still be able to keep my unlimited data. I will do it once I get off work since my phone arrives today. I will post back tonight!
So if I get an Inc4g (and sell the SG3) and keep my unlimited, do I just activate the Inc4g? or do I need to first activate the SG3, then activate the Inc4g?
Hey,
The key is you need to open the box and activate the GS3 which nails you with the 35 dollar restocking fee for swapping it out for the exchange but it also locks in your contract with unlimited data.

When you "exchange" do you get the $50 rebate?
I may plan to sell it on ebay then buy an Inc on ebay. I figure if I can sell for $600 or higher and get an Inc4g for $350 or lower, I will break even with verizon's $200 + tax + $35 fee assuming I can't take advantage of the $50 rebate.
In that case, do I still need to open it and activate it?
And if I don't activate, and just activate the Inc4g, then what happens?
Is there anything special to be done with the sim card?
I have successfully exchanged in my S3 for the Incredible 4g. I walked in with my un-opened/un-activated S3 and asked for a straight up exchange. I still have my unlimited data intact and received the $50 dollar mail in rebate. HOWEVER I did have to pay the $35 dollar restocking fee. Good luck.

I will also be switching to Inc from S III because of the sh!t screen the S III has on it (dim, pentile, generally crap).
I do not expect to pay restocking. I will not be opening the S III box!!! That would be completely unacceptable. I also expect the $50 difference of the price. It's just plain fair.
Also S III has locked boot loader, Inc does not. I hope this means we get good ROMs and mods etc.

I was told that I had to pay the restocking fee. I will try and call csr tomorrow and try and get out of it. I was also told by a chat rep that I could get out of the activation fee as well. I will update you guys again tomorrow.

I am not usually one to be rude in public or anything, but that is unacceptable. I assume you have not opened the box. In my case they won't have a problem selling a Galaxy S III. They'll probably sell my phone that day. So I don't expect anything less than $50 back and a "Have a Nice Day".
I do wish I had an S III with an LCD display. But the AMOLED is just so incredibly terrible no pun intended. At least to my eyes, anyhow. YMMV.
OH, if I can get the $50 rebate then I think its indeed worth it to exchange vs trying the ebay route with the selling fees, paypal fees, and shipping it would be tough to break even even with paying that $35 restocking.
I suspect with enough complaining and letters, I could get that waived if it was still sealed on box. Ofcourse its a "restocking" fee, not a "repacking" fee. Does it really cost them $35 to put the box back on the shelf?

Best way to buy/pre-order GNote 2

Looking to buy this phone ASAP. My sprint contract is not up, but I will be cancelling and gladly paying them to get to a real LTE network. Anyone know of the best deal now or around Black Friday? I don't want to pay $299, and then activation fee, and then ETF fee, but i guess if i absolutely have to, I will.

Nobody knows dude. It isn't coming out until a week after BF. Doubtful there will be any deals on this initially, maybe towards Xmas time or some promo at a few stores for gift cards. It isn't going to be released and then have an instant $100 off. You are pretty much stuck paying the cost as is.

You can weasel out of the activation fee if you go to the store. Just tell the rep you will buy from him/her if you waive the activation fee. (The reps make commission off of sells.) He/she will ask the manager for the ok and you should be good to go then. Feel free to mention that you are coming from Sprint and signing a new contract. If they give you crap, just pretend like you changed your mind and want to stick with sprint. If you handle it right, you will never have to pay for an activation fee.
I honestly doubt Verizon or Best Buy will go any cheaper on the device itself.

It has been really hard for me to get them to waive the activation fee. Tried to do it with iP4 and my sister's iP4S. Didn't work, went to 2 different stores/called in and tried to order it. Maybe it was just my luck..
I think you can get the activation waived if you go to a third party reseller, though.
I think if you get the phone at Best Buy where they don't charge an activation fee it'll show up on your first bill.

Were you upgrading? Last time I did the upgrade I had to threaten to go over to AT&T. They didn't like the idea of losing 4 lines.

Yessir.
I didn't threaten my business. Maybe I will try that. Iheard the best way is to walk out saying you'll go to another sales rep, though since they aer commissioned based. Although it seems this may not matter as much, as they have lowered their commission by quite a lot for their employees to they might just be like F it, let him go to a dif store. I don't think there is any way in hell this will happen online or via phone though. I tried it before with absolutely no luck. They do not seem to budge at all.

But not the Verizon version which won't be out yet.
Yeah, it sucks too because I called best buy/ best buy mobile and asked them about preorders. I asked if there was an offer next week for the note ii could I come in and preorder it and get the deal they are offering that day. They said no, the sale counts as the preorder date. I used to work in a retail store that had this exact policy as well, so it is doubtful you can get any deals anywhere at this point.
Yeah it sucks. Best Buy had a %20 off black friday coupon that we couldn't use on pre orders. Would have gotten it at $263
If anyone's interested, I think Wirefly is selling it for $280....at least for my zip code.

Not sure if they can waive activation, but if they can and do, I'll go with them.

I found the best way to do it via Best Buy via their $50 gift card offer they had months ago. You just had to register with it letting them know that if you upgraded you could use the $50 gift card towards it. Also a rep MIGHT be willing to wave their crappy fees in the promise you will buy accessories from them as I believe that still helps credit their sales scores for the month.
