Still no way to mount internal memory when pluging usb to a pc?
No there never will be a real method.
It's possible to do it but your computer won't understand it at all since EXT4 filesystems are only recognized by Linux-based OS.
I'm working on a possible solution but it's cumbersome and difficult so I don't know when to expect a first working alpha.
Why the hell did they remove the access? Windows can see ext4 with some app.

No, and there won't be. It's not just that it's EXT4, it's because everything that is stored on the phone is in one large block of memory, no partitions. Hence why you have shared memory between apps, and your personal data etc.
EDIT: Besides, why the hell is everyone crying about it anyway.

For me, it's for two reasons:
The first (and most annoying) is that i use a bunch of devices that only accept input from a flash drive (such as my car stereo), so instead of just useing my phone in mass storage mode, now i have to use an aux cable, and the sound quality, accessibility, and not to mention safety, is compromised because of that.
Another reason is that for me, MTP is inferior to mass storage in both accessing and transferring multiple files to and from my phone.
I don't really know if it has any redeeming features, if it does, then i guess I'm in the minority that doesn't use them.

It's designed to work across any devices with optimal usage. E.g. if you put a movie on the phone it will convert it to the phone's screen resolution and codec format.
However I don't see that as a feature since video conversion is realtime at best, meaning you'll have to wait 2 hours to transfer that movie to your phone...
and the sound quality, accessibility, and not to mention safety

Well... it's forbidden to manipulate the phone in most countries when driving and not using a car-kit. So I don't see a safety issue, only a conveniance issue since you are not allowed that one track that annoys you.
Sound quality isn't that bad with the plug.
Just put all your media on your external SD card and use the app I described, that works flawlessly with car audio.

True, however Windows-based computers can only READ the filesystem. No port I'd know of exists for Mac OS so they would be locked out anyway. Your car radio can only read FAT32 anyway.
Is there a way I can recover my deleted files on my Xperia SOLA mnt/sdcard/DCIM ? I am planning to use Recuva on my Windows PC but it can't read my phone because it is a part of internal memory and won't show as a disk. Are my deleted photos gone forever?
I asked in paranoid android thread about that recently and people told me it's totally possible to mount it, just like sd card...

1. You're in the wrong forum for the Xperia
2. Why are you piggybacking on an old thread instead of creating a new one for your issue? They have nothing in common.
Yes, you should be able to mount it (unless it uses a non-FAT32 filesystem) However since we don't have the Xperia (hint: this is Samsung, not Sony) the exact command is unknown to me.
So, what are the best options to access all the internal storage files from my computer (in linux or windows, it does not matter)?
Also, if I need to send my phone to repair, how do I back up the whole storage? AFAIK CWM does not backup the internal sd card, right?

Unfortunately not. Google moved from UMS to MTP with Honeycomb because UMS locks out the storage to the phone when it's plugged into a computer.
I've never heard of this being an actual problem for anyone. You've only got it plugged in for a set period of time.

If you are having a rooted phone, there are StickMount from chainfire, Alt Mounter and SGS3 easy UMS that will allow you to connect the android in Mass Storage Mode.
Can someone post a link for SGS3 easy UMS because download keeps failing from site and Google didn't help.

[APP] [v1.1] Mount external microSD card as USB mass storage
Stick Mounter has nothing to do with UMS.
Alt Mounter requires a helper service on the computer and can only provide FTP access, no real mass storage.
Here's what you can run on the Terminal (the Helper app only runs the commands for you; easier to use)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27282116&postcount=58
So has anyone actually tried SGS3 easy UMS? If it works will the host on my car stereo, tv etc recognise it and is there any system side effects I should know about.
If you don't trust the app (the commands really work =D ), get 'Gscript lite' in Google Play and add the corresponding parts as 2 different scripts which you then put on your homescreen for easy access.
That will do exactly the same for you.
Whether it works with car hifi etc depends on your devices. A user 'Siran' reported that his car-stereo took some time to recognize it and the playback had hiccups, but at least the last issue could be attributed to the SDcard not being unmounted in the phone before mounting it on the computer.
Currently the app uses the 'old method' while my script correctly mounts/unmounts to prevent such issues.
The side effect is the same as always; that particular card is not mounted and available in the phone as long as it's mounted as mass-storage on external devices. However that should not be a real issue. No negative side effects are known or likely to exist.

Well, isn't possible then to use it simultaneously from the phone and the usb? What does this app stand for then?
Multi Mount SD-Card and MountUSB Widget
It is, check the "--- BELOW ..." lines in my link.
However it WILL cause data corruption and data loss and might even cause the SDcard's filesystem to be damaged beyond repair.
What you do is use the same filesystem in 2 distinct locations which individually write on it.
To understand how that causes an issue, you'll have to get a basic understanding of a filesystem; they actually work like a science book.
You have an index listing all directories and files aswell as their relation to each other and where on the SDcard the file is stored.
Now if a file is modified the index is changed and then the file added, changed or deleted.
So far, so wel.
If you now mount it on 2 locations (mind you: filesystems don't know about that, so each location thinks it is the sole one accessing it) and work from 2 locations on the same data you have a rather high chance that one operating system will eventually overwrite or alter data without the other one knowing about it.
If the index is too damaged you'll not only loose some files but potentially all filenames and folders. Applications like Recuva can recover most of the files (at least usually) but it won't be pretty, easy and complete.
Simply don't do it. There is a reason why noone implements it
Just tried SGS3 easy UMS on my Tv and Dvd player through their host and worked fine with music, videos and images, and i'll check my car stereo tomorrow, so thanks d4fseeker.

You mean OTG (USB On the GO). I though it was for both OTG and MSC.
Last night, due to the wonders of MTP, it took me nearly 2 hours to transfer 2gb of data from my S2 over to the S3, with many popup interruptions delaying the transfer.
God I hate MTP's speed with many small files. But I guess it could be worse if they locked the filesystem down.
Hey,
I just picked up a SGS3 today and is in the process of setting it up and restoring apps and what not. I have however hit a slight snag that I dont seem to be able to work around. Is there some way to get the SGS3 into USB Storage Mode, and thus being able to access both the internal and external SD of the phone as removeable storage in Windows?.
Several of my apps sadly saved stuff on the internal SD of the SGS2 and I need to put it on the internal of the SGS3 in order to be able to restore. Can anyone help me?.

I already have that installed. According to the description it ONLY makes external SD UMS, and not Internal which is what I want and need. I need both internal and external SD "mounted" as UMS.
You can only see internal in MTP mode but people are working on trying to link internal to external over UMS so you'll just have to wait until it's been done.
That sorta sucks to be honest, so I am stuck copying stuff to external SD and then moving it to the internal for the time being >.<
Yep and it looks like Samsung isn't gonna bring it back either even though they could if they want with no problems, so it all depends if Google make some changes in Jellybean to make it easier using ExFat.

Sorry but that sentence makes no sence. The only possibility is to create a virtual filesystem in RAM which maps it's I-Node locations to the corresponding files and/or location on the EXT4 filesystem.

You can swap internal with external storage and thus make it USB-mountable. However note that for data integrity it will need to be unmounted on the phone which can cause all sorts of unexpected behaviours.

If there's any serious problems that mean it can't be implemented then why do so many phones have this and App moving with no appreciable performance problems? The fact is Samsung could relatively easily include these things to make the phone work as well as it should but they simply for whatever reason decided against it, and even if they did include it and UMS transfer speeds weren't as good as they could be at least the feature would have been there and the reality is that's really what matters.
Hello, I really hate that the s3 doesn`t have usb mass storage, I saw someone saying that mtp is better than the clasic transfer but I really see no advantages. Is pretty hard to recover a file once deleted as you can`t assign a drive letter , you can`t use your phone while files are being transferred but the most annoying of all is that you can`t preview your pictures/videos before copying it, so tell me, how is mtp better than usb mass storage that was on s2?
My digital camera has mtp also and I CAN preview the pictures before copying them to my pc so this is possible, the question is how can I do this on my s3 also?Is very annoying that I have to check every picture and video as you don`t know what you are transferring.
Thank you for your potential answers.
I don't know which one is better but if you want UMS then there is a app called easy ums that you can download if you are rooted. Just search for it in the forums.

- Far less risk of disk corruption due to advanced filesystem technology (EXT4 instead of FAT32)
- Apps don't loose their data (which they often store on the /sdcard) while mounted on the computer
- Compatibility across all MTP-capable computers and electronic devices
- Conversion into supported format by host computer (ok, that one might not be a real advantage))

I usually use Samba fileshare which, since it's based on SMB, even allows mounting as a drive letter on Windows. (Not a REAL drive though, you can't recover deleted files)
Additionally it only requires a direct or accesspoint-based Wifi connection, not a physical cable between the computer and the phone.
Requires root though (mostly because of it using privileged ports)

There's something called Google. Due to performance- and security-reasons more and more devices will drop USB-mount in favor of MTP.

May not be of any help but I personally use Airdroid for data transfer off the internal memory, aslong as you have a wireless n router I find it better than using MTP. (have had lots of tranfer freeze ups with MTP so gave up using it). Downside is atmo airdroid doesn't seem to be able to access external storage, so would use UMS, card reader, etc for that.

I think you can use a program called SGS3 Easy UMS or something like that - but it will only work for SD and when UMS mode is active the phone can not access the SD. Also there is a 'trick' where you sometimes need to stop the media scanner for the program to get exclusive access.

Yes, because the same card is used for the OS, and "internal SD" as we know it is just a folder on it. So it cannot be mounted in UMS because that would mean unmounting the OS

Let's forget for a moment about the internal storage. Let's focus on the uSD.
My recovery (CWM 6.0.2.7 + PhilZ Touch 3) can let me see the uSD as USB mass storage.
What would it be the difficulty to do the same under all these ROMs?
How can a user space application (SGS3 Easy UMS) circumvent an underlying system limitation?
I would like just to understand, not to criticize, of course!
I don't know why the external SD cannot be mounted as UMS right out of the box. Probably because they didn't want to use different standarts at the same time - MTP for internal, UMS for external

Hmmm ... do you mean that with "dual storage" device Google code is not contemplating the possibility to provide access to the uSD as a USB mass storage, while doing it with single storage devices?
My old Sensation XE running CM 10.1 was working fine with no need of any extra software ...
This seems to be not less than weird!
I'm saying that they didn't want to have two different standards at the same time - MTP and UMS, as that could be confusing for some users, so they left it for the devs. That's just pure speculation.
They started doing that pretty recently, hence your Sensation has UMS built-in.

It looks like this is something they do only with dual storage devices. CM v10.1-nightly on the Sensation works fine.
Honestly, I don't like it. The userland app delivers lower transfer speeds.
And, most important, it doesn't work any more with my car stereo as it used to do with a single storage device.
I personally think this is a great mistake done by Google or whoever else.
AFAIK, Sensation doesn't have this new method of storage allocation, that's why it has UMS.
I've found this (I have no windows at home).
It sheds more light on this topic.
Maybe I'm badly wrong, but my idea is that devs just went completely bulls*it with UMS. My not-so-humble opinion.
USB mass storage protocol was a block-level protocol. What this meant was that a partition could not be mounted on two different systems at the same time. Each partition that needs to be mounted on a computer must be unmounted from the phone first. This would be impossible on a phone with only a single partition, since if the system partition was unmounted, the phone would crash.
To work around this issue, Android phones up until now either had two partitions in the internal memory (like the Nexus S) or had a microSD slot (like the Samsung Galaxy S II). Phones with micro-SD slots would just export the microSD card partitions to the connected computer.
But the Galaxy Nexus only has a single internal partition.

Yes, it says "phones up until now", which is what I said. This doesn't include SGS3
If I understood well, Easy UMS simply makes some changes to the default system configuration in order to restore the "standard" USB mass storage profile for the uSD alone.
If this is the case (please provide any feedback, pleeease) I'd push AOSP for restoring it by default.
I've found a nice "mtpfs" package that would allow me to (kind of) mount the storage. But this is a workaround.

It is very simple to understand - your recovery knows it will never WRITE to uSD at the same time as the UMS program (which exposes the PHYSICAL card as a block device). In a normal ROM that assumption would be fatal and you would soon have fatal results, so instead MTP/PTP was chosen - which exposes the FILE SYSTEM instead of the BLOCK DEVICE.
So somehow Easy UMS circumvents those restrictions ...
In other cases you got the warning that some applications could possibly not work properly because of multiple concurrent accesses.
But now the situation is much more clear, indeed.
Hello!
I bought this phone this week and so far I love it, long time Google Pixel user (p3a, p3xl, p4xl) that got enough of Google's AI deciding everything for me.
The cameras are amazing (Still gotta get used to it, so rn I am using auto mode) and the screen is unbeatable.
I have ONE issue with this phone, I mainly got it because I am currently deGoogling my online profile and I am planning on downloading everything from google photos and transfer it locally to my sd card and make backups every week (and store it on server in an ecrypted container). But I have been looking through the settings and can't seem to find the "Encrypt SD Card" mode, I want to encrypt it because I don't want the risk of me losing the phone and some random taking it and looking through everything I have on my SD card (that's unencrypted).
I am aware that If the device breaks down or stolen I won't be able to recover the data, but I'd much rather risking losing my data than someone else getting access to it.
Is there a way around this? I was looking into EDS or Cryptomator, but both seem to be too messy (having to access the files in the app) or need ROOT for mounting the countainers, do you guys recommend anything I can do here? I got about 70GB of photos and Videos to store on the sd card.
Looking forward to receiving replies,
Chali
Never encrypt data drives as you are the one most likely to be lock out. Many times it's through no fault of your own.
Physical security is the only real security. Phones don't just get lost unless you are careless. You ever lose your wallet?
You should probably rethink what you keep on the phone and how you handle the phone especially in unsecured environments.

Very true, but I will be making backups to other devices so that's not an issue for me. I usually split it in 3 online clouds and 2 HDD.
Would you place all your sensitive info in an external SD card without encryption?

Redundant backup is the only way. That sounds like a good plan. More hdds that have time staggered data and not store in one location. A Faraday cage ie earth grounded firebox is ideal.
A near lightning strike can wipe them... or magnets.
Like I said I never encrypt data drives including the one on my phone. Maybe if I had a vast empire to protect but that is not the case.
The only option i found is to put sensitive data in main internal phone's memory and a remote wipe if stolen (as i supposed phone itself is encrypted , not the sdcard) in case of sensitive infos (id cards, bank info etc)
but you have to backup its internal stockage ie some folders like "documents" regularly

An effective and safer option than encrypting the data drive. Encrypting the SD card will also impact read/write performance. How much I'm not sure.
I will reply to myself, I used EDS from the playstore. I created a hidden volume using veracrypt on pc and store files in it, I can access most files and documents within the EDS app, it works great.

But EDS needs root , just to prevent an useless purchase for unrooted users

You can explore the files inside the container (only FAT and exFAT formats) inside the EDS app and open them using another app, ROOT is needed to mount the volume (essentially being able to access it from any app)
You can adopt it
Google adb android adopt storage

Hello, thanks for your reply, but would that break when I disconnect the SD card?

It won't break the SD card when removed, but it will be unreadable on other devices.
