4G Network Strength = 2147483647Dbm - Motorola Droid RAZR

http://i.imgur.com/Y93nF.png
This seems to happen when I go from an area with a good 4G connection into a subway tunnel or an area with very poor connection. It hangs on this for about 30 secs before ultimately realizing that there is no network connection whatsoever.
I haven't seen this (or perhaps never noticed) on stock GB. I didn't have stock ICS long enough to know if this were the case on Motorola's OTA. I started noticing that my phone showed full 4G connection for around half a minute, when in subway tunnels/other areas with very poor connection in general, while I was using spc_hicks09's cm9 ROM, but I never actually checked the signal strength in settings. I thought that it was some bug that was present in all CM9 ROMs for Razr. Now I am running, mattlgroff's arctic ROM and I am still having the same problem I first saw in the CM9 ROM. This time around I checked the settings and saw that the 4G was registering 2147483647dBm
I haven't seen this reported by anyone else. 4G works well otherwise along with 3G and 1X (yuck!). Incidentally, a quick search shows that 2147483647 is "The largest positive value of a signed integer on a 32 bit operating system." Maybe related?
Recently I fastboot .211 and updated to .215 while keeping to stock and root - I still see this problem.
Thoughts?

confirmed
Have seen this response at home which is definitely a fringe area for 4G (maybe 2 to 5 % of the time with a marginal 4G signal balance 3G).
Happens just before 4G drops out completely. No ill effects observed.

Is it causing you issues? I am only getting 3G and 1X but whenever I'm in the bigger cities, I will get LTE for a few minutes but then 2147483647 dBm comes up in the signal strength in the testing menu and that's where the LTE goes away for good. It won't come back unless I toggle airplane mode on/off and it comes back but occasionally connects. Does the same thing on Latest Stock ROM. Started about a month and a half ago. When did it start for you?

Sorry dude I no longer have this phone

[Q] Need serious data help!!

Ugh!! I'm about to throw this Vibrant against the wall!
First off, I love this phone! The display is brilliant and battery is one of the best i've had on a smart phone. But I've had one issue that is driving me crazy. Lemme give you the timeline.
1) I bought this phone on the first day of release in June. Loved it! Didn't have any issues.
2) Soon after the 14 days were up, I started having data issues. At first, every so often, whenever I would listen to Pandora or Slacker, after awhile the data connection would "freeze up" and I couldn't connect to the data network. I could occasionally resolve this by rebooting the phone.
3) After awhile, i noticed that the problem got worse. Any data-intensive app or website would cause the data to "freeze". It would be random. Sometimes, I could listen to Pandora or Slacker for hours or sometimes after 5 minutes it would lock up. Rebooting would sometimes work, but usually not. It would just resolve itself, but usually after 30 minutes or more.
4) Now, its basically happening all the time. Even trying to browse to google.com causes data to "freeze". Downloading anything is next to impossible.
I put "freeze" in quotes because i'm not exactly sure what is going on. The notification bar shows 3G with full bars. Knowing that is not always a good indicator, I downloaded mobile signal widget. During these periods of "frozen" data, it would still show 3G or "H" with signal anywhere from -63dBm to over -100dBm. Yet, no matter what, I still cannot connect to anything over the data network.
I've factory reset, reflashed stock, upgraded to JI6 (and JI2 prior), flashed Frankin-Twiz, flashed Bionix, flashed different kernals, no dice. I contacted T-Mobile and they sent a replacement phone. Same issue. I contacted Samsung and they had no idea what it could be.
Please. Can any one of you geniuses help me out? I'm considering going back to my trusty G1 (which does not have the issue), but I'd rather not.
i had similar problem on mine, before the JI6 update. I spent many hours on the phone with Tmo and no success. I had found that rebooting the phone seemed to restore my true data access, but you shouldn't have to do that 5-10 times a day. Eventually they turned on the "Android Web" at a cost of $10 extra a month and then it was less spotty. I don't know what eventually fixed it but it now works so much better. Then JI6 helped out a bunch too. I think somehow rooting it helped, but I don't see how. It doesn't make sense. My best guess is that Tmo signals suck or go down frequently and a bad factory modem points that out more clearly?
Well, I've always had Android Web (at least for the last 2 years), JI6 seemed to make it worse, I've been rooted from almost day 1, and all indicators show that the signal is good.
If I were to have to reboot everytime, it'd be much more than 5-10 times a day.
I would think at -63 dBm you'd have terrific data speeds. Best I've ever seen on my Vibrant here in Dallas is -81 dBm. Even though the notification icon said "3G", in the about section it showed HSDPA. I then ran a speedtest and was averaging 5 mbps download which is fantastic compared to what I get at home. I'm lucky if I get 1 mbps at the house and that's if it doesn't stall out requiring me to force it to 2G. I normally average between -81 dBm to -97 dBm, sometimes over -100.
But my phone has never frozen or anything like that. There have been occasions where the green up arrow will stay solid and I won't be able to use the data. But I think that is due to 3G being kind of ****ty near my house. I never have that problem if I force EDGE.
I am still using the JFD firmware though. I have yet to receive an OTA update and nor do I care. I also don't really care to flash it with ODIN either at this point. I'd rather wait until 2.2 is released....not holding my breath for Samsung/Tmobile though. I think TMO's 3G just sucks in a lot of areas. I have a Blackberry 9700 which gets similar crappy 3G performance. Case in point, I was at a wedding last weekend 10 minutes from my home and coverage was awesome. I never knew what decent HSPA was until then with this phone.
Oh and regarding the battery....while the SGS's battery isn't terrible for a smartphone, it holds nothing...I repeat...nothing...to the Blackberry. Sorry, just had to.
What I am about to say is very unscientific and 100% placebo based. Here goes:
I have always had that same problem. When using the extended battery and backcover, however, it appears to be nonexistent. Using speedtest I am getting upwards of 5 mbps where I previously would only get under 2.

Isn't the antenna on the bottom of the phone? Hence the so called 3g death grip. You may be on to something I switched to a different case....the fake carbon fiber samsung with galaxy s on the back and it seems my reception isnt as bad as it was. I dont have to force 2g as much at home. Previous was the casemate tough case. Either that or I'm just holding the phone differently. Or its a placebo affect like you said.
Anyone else have any ideas? Does that logcat help at all? I get a feeling most of the people who know the intricacies of Android don't look at this forum.

Still having data connection issues:chicago

Ever since that data outage from 3 weeks ago, me and my wife's thunderbolts have had issues holding 3g/4g connections. The phones willswitch all the way from 4g to no data connection at all during various points in the day. I've tried the mr1 through mr2.5 radios and the issues haven't gone away. Talked to Verizon tech support multiple times and they said they've opened up a trouble ticket to see if its the network or our phones. We stay around Aurora and naperville which are full 4g areas but have had problems in multiple towns. So just wondering if anyone in the Chicago land area or the country for that matter is experiencing the same thing since that outage from a few weeks back.
For reference, I'm running cm7 with mr2 and mr2.5 on my wife's phone. But like I said I've tried different radios already.

You both are running CM7? Does this happen if you are stock?
Is Aurora / Naperville full 4g? I know going north towards Kenosha I lose 4g around Waukegan
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
connection perfectly stable in north side of chicago. i would simply return the phone to stock and exchange it. maybe a bad sim card. do you have problems sticking only to 3g? or does that work pefectly?
Its been acting up since before I installed cm on our phones. They haven't been the same since the data outage. We've had cm for about a week or so and before that we were running mr1 and mr2 with basic root.

If the phone is fine no need to exchange it just get a new sim. I got thunderbolts for my gf and her brother yesterday and their 4g seemed perfectly stable as I was rooting them the only thing I noticed was it did take a little for 4g to kick in after toggling via lte onoff

3g runs fine. And all of naperville and Aurora are 4g. North Aurora is not as far as I know. And I thought about the sim being bad but I don't think that's very likely for 2 phonesphones

Hey rygel411, does this sound like your situation?
1) Boot phone up fresh full reboot
2) Phone grabs a 3g/4g signal instantly and holds it for several hours fine
3) Randomly when you power on the display, you are missing a 3g/4g icon but have full bars
4) Checking under Wireless Network settings, Mobile Networks is OFF and WON'T turn on
5) Reboot solves the problem or Wait approx 2-4 hours and it solves itself randomly without doing anything
Does this sound like your situation? No 3g/4g icons and no data connection, and unable to turn data back on without a reboot or waiting a long time? Cuz if so this is exactly what happens to me and I live in central NJ. I always get perfect 3G signal on all my phones, even in my house. And my data speeds are generally good; 1500-3000kbps on 3G.
I am running MR2 Das BAMF Gingerstripped with Imoseyon's 3.4.0 GB Kernel. It IS related to Gingerbread, as my girlfriends Thunderbolt running full stock does not see this issue at all.
Similar but not exactly, both phones were acting up before I had gingerbread on them

I am in the western suburbs (Oak Park, River Forest) and I don't have any issues at all along the I-88 corridor out to Route 59. That's about as far into Naperville as I drive. 4G the whole way, no dropped calls.

Just wondering but are you on MR2? Because if anything its either that or the ROM, and I am more or less thinking its the radio. Could be why we didn't see this radio OTA yet.

I'm on 2.5, not sure of it's radio related or their network because I had Zero problems before with this configuration.
I was on 2.5. Then I downloaded the cm7 update that dropped a couple of hours ago and I was getting horrendous speeds with it, barely 1mbps. So I downgraded to mr2 and now I'm back between 7 and 13. I'm thinking about downgrading to the froyo radio and installing the cm7 compatible version with it.

This is exactly my finding, just in New Jersey instead of Chicago. I would like to see explicit details on what exactly happens when you folks lose your data connection, and what happens when you try to toggle certain settings (ie - plane mode, mobile network, etc)
Especially one particular detail. When you lose your data connection, is there a 1x icon in the notification bar, or are there NO icons next to your signal. That will determine if we're having a connection problem to Verizon, or if our ROM's/Radio's are the culprit.

I have the same exact problem as the OP. I live in Wheaton, work in Carol Stream and go to Chicago every weekend because my girlfriend lives there. 4G and 3G CONSTANTLY go in and out when trying to use them. The 4G icon diappears and then reappears. It doesn't switch over to 3G or 1X. The icon just disappears, displays full bars for a second in grey, 4G icon comes back in grey with 1-2 bars in grey and then goes green after 10-20 seconds or so. It's so ****ing annoying.
I'm running the latest CM7 build with 0223r radio. I've tried MR2 and MR 2.5 and have no luck. It's driving me nuts. It's not CM7 either. I was running rooted stock and it was doing the same thing.
I was getting symptoms like it was shutting on and off. Mine works fine with no changes in the Tampa area.

i only see this problem while tethering. if i try too many connections (open windows at same time) the 4g disappears for a second or two then it comes back. other than that (chicago north side) my 4g has been flawless. never switched to 3g either.
mobile connection issues on HTC Thunderbolt
Hi,
Did anyone ever figure out connection issues with HTC Thunderbolt? I have the exact issue that DaRkL3AD3R discussed in July.
My Thunderbolt just started doing almost the identical thing as he posted. Can't get on internet unless I wait, boot, whatever - almost identical to what you stated. Connection seems to be connected but it is not. I am new to "messing" around with my phone but this cuased me to root and boot but still on the Gingerbread os. It is driving me batty! It started about Mar 25 or so and I thought booting would help. Do you know if it may be the radio and are there other versions I can try? Someone mentioned new PRI version? Thanks for any pointing in the right direction!

Atrix Data Very Inconsistent - Frustrating!

Data speeds have been horribly inconsistent since I got it. I have had several AT&T 3G phones in the same locations I'm using the Atrix and I can say with confidence it's not just the network. In the same spot at the same time a speed test will tell me ~3Mbps down ~1Mbps up and yet it will be horribly slow surfing the web. I'll bench it again a few minutes later and the speed test page won't even load. Apps will complain of no data connectivity and then boom, all of a sudden it's back. The whole time I'll have a 4-5 bars of service and my wife's iPhone sitting right next to it has no problems. Many times I have to reboot the phone to get data service back. Sometimes the data speed is so good I think I left the wifi on. That rarely lasts however.
I have tried nearly every "ROM" and radio in the dev section. I'm currently running the latest AT&T radio and CherryBlur. Is the radio in this thing just a PoS? I was thinking of having it swapped anyway since the front facing camera is completely blocked with pocket lint.
I just got the Atrix as a company phone. I traded in my company iPhone 4 for it for a couple of reasons.
1.) I prefer android phones
2.) I have an upcoming trip to Europe and thought I would have an easier time using the Atrix over there than the iPhone.
3.) I have an android tablet that also has a Tegra 2 chip in it so I thought I could run of the of the games I got for my tablet on this phone.
4.) Both my personal and work cell phones were 3G phones.
After having it for only 2 days, I am not a fan. I noticed the crappy data speed and also have suffered the network not available errors.
I have a rooted Droid X as a personal phone and I absolutely LOVE it. I travel for business and pleasure and when I do I usually take both my work phone and personal phone and I consistently see I get a stronger and better signal from my Verizon Droid X phone. Even when I had the (AT&T) iPhone 4 (3G) I saw the weak signal and slow speeds.
Anyway, back to the topic of this thread. Yes, you're not alone. This Atrix is pretty disappointing being a "4G" phone and all. Last night while at home I tried watching videos from several sources on this Atrix. Fox Television, Hulu Plus, and Crackle all complained about "a network error" and would take forever to load a video if it didn't error out first and then it was really poor quality complared to what I experience on my old 3G Verizon Droid X. If that wasn't bad enough I even got the network errors popup when I would move around in the Market looking at apps and such.
I am planning on upgrading my personal phone to the Droid Bionic when it is released next month but alas that phone is not "global ready" so I will see what I can do with this Atrix once I get root on it just so I can have a "world phone" as a backup.
Atrix 4G HSDPA+ speeds
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I'm currently just outside of Princeton, NJ... running the speedtest.net application:
H+ data, 4-5 bars connectivity
Ping: 99ms
Download: 53kbps (yes, k)
Upload: 90kpbs
I regularly measure in the 50-80kbps speeds.
When I got my Atrix, I figured HSDPA+ would be faster.....
(yes, I made sure nothing else was using CPU or the data connection - I run this test regularly).
Admittedly, in other areas I've seen as high as 1 Mbps, but it's consistently bad in this area, even given an apparently strong signal.
I do not share your frustrations. I am on Bell in Canada and average 2 mbps down / 1 mbps up. That's blazing fast for Canada in my books!
Maybe flashing up the latest radio by kenneth (in dev section) may be of some help.

Huh???
Look in your settings/about phone and post what network type and radio version you have on there. You should certainly be on HSPA+ now with the rest of the US and probably world.
Is it the phone or the network? Just asking since I have both an AT&T phone and a Verizon phone and have noticed network and download speed issues and am really disappointed with my Atrix.

The network severely limits non-iphones. Same deal with HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse, etc. I can usually hit 3-4 MB/s down, 1.5 MB/s up. That's not 4G. It's not the Atrix causing this.

3G and 4GLTE symbols randomly disappear

Literally every single day my "3G" or "4GLTE" symbol disappears and thus lose my data connection. The bars will remain, even with 3 or 4 bars (full signal), but the symbol is gone. I do not have the SLIGHTEST CLUE why it does this, I have tried different roms and different radio combinations and it still does it. It could be gone for 1 minute, 8 minutes, or like today THIRTY (30) minutes at one point! I use my phone for work AND HAVE TO HAVE a reliable connection. I literally sat on my tushy for 30 minutes trying to get my 3G or 4GLTE symbol back and it took restoring a different ROM for it to come back. Later in the day I restored back to the ROM I was on and the 3G was there with no problem.
I do not understand this for the Godforsaken life of me and am about ready to hurl my Thunderbolt at a train.

I believe the bars indicate voice connection only, not data connection. It is possible to have a good voice signal, yet a weak data connection.
You're probably encountering this as your phone switches from 4g. Some reason it is not always a seamless transfer.
Sent from my Eternity Infected TB
It's happening to me too. I'm not sure if it's because of issues switching from 4G to 3G, because prior to the most recent Gingerbread update, I was pretty consistently getting 4G, and now it'll drop the data connection even if I leave my phone on my nightstand all day.
I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my battery life getting way worse after the update? I've never done it before, but I'm seriously thinking about rooting and installing a custom ROM... or saving up and buying a Rezound at full retail.
I believe this is a known issue with this phone (and most other 4G phones). I don't see this problem when I'm in a very strong 4G area. But, at home, I have to use LTE On/Off to lock it into LTE-only mode. It's the only way to keep it from switching back and forth from 3G to 4G. (Sadly, I also need to leave the phone near a window to receive a 4G signal.)

[Q] Constant Switching Between 4G LTE and 3G

Hi all,
This question might have been posted already seeing as this phone is about a year old already. I'm running the STOCK ICS ROM OTA 4.0.4 unrooted. I've noticed that after the update my phone keeps switching from 4G to 3G and back but the problem is so bad that I lose every bar of signal (i.e. empty bars and of course no data) for at least a minute when the phone switches. I've already gone through the process of getting a replacement phone and I will need another because the receiver (speaker inside when I make a phone call, not sure what its really called) sounds awfully tinny and when the hang up tone plays the speaker sounds like its about to blow out. I lowered the in call volume to half, but it still doesn't work and my phone sounds tinny when ever someone talks during a phone call. I never had that problem with my old RAZR. As for the data issue, I am aware that I live in an old building because at the most I get between 3-4 bars of 4G LTE but sometimes as low as 2 bars. However, outside on the street I get full bars of 4G LTE and it still switches back to 3G on it's own. I have tried Motorola's restore connectivity app on the play store but that didn't work and I don't have anything like smart actions or LTE on/off app running on my phone.
Is anybody else having these issues? At first I thought Verizon sucks in my house but it doesn't I still get crystal clear sound on calls and text messages are promptly sent and received. I also, of course, live in a 4G LTE area with good solid coverage. As a control I have an iPad 4G LTE with Verizon on a separate account and it consistently stays connected to LTE. It never drops below 2 bars and the LTE of course maintains its fast speed. On the other hand, the RAZR, will switch between both technologies at least 5 times a day if not more. I know that they both have different radio technologies but they should at least be similar in some respect. I have also seen an iPhone 5 at the Verizon Corportate kiosk at my local mall. It's obvious there are repeaters but they are not for 4G because none of the phones are on 4G, they are on 3G. The iPhone 5, however, had one bar of LTE and it loaded up a web page just fine and I never saw it drop back down to 3G. I'm trying to see if there is a solution. Have any of the Jellybean ROMs addressed this issue?
