[Q] Screen Issues (Pixelation) (Updated) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
I came to realise that some S3 also suffer from black crush like the Note. So I went to try playing the Glee video , the screen went very bad and almost the whole screen is pixelated from 0.36-0.38 (lightings). It's not really black crush but rather bluish white blocks occur on lightings.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cay2dnuhcs
When there's transitions from white to gray, gray to black and vice versa is bad, there are also pixelated blocks there. (last attachment)
Here are some example photos,
*These are on full brightness

The bluish white blocks are too ugly to see. I've compared with the iPhone 4S and the iPhone seems to handle the lightings very well in full brightness(no obvious blocks)
Brightness does the trick too, when I lower the brightness to under 40%, the blocks are not as visible but once I go higher than that, ugly scenes show up again.
supercurio tweeted that there's already a solution for this but I must root my phone to get it fixed. I'm pretty sure that it's not a hardware issue because there's an app that temporarily fix this issue but it may harm my screen as the app itself warned me. The app is "Filter My Screen".
I hope there's a firmware update that will solve this problem so that I don't need to root my phone just to get this fixed.
Helps are appreciated.
Regards

See all the other black crush posts .

I looked through most of the posts about black crush already. I don't think that my issue is black crush, but I could be wrong.
Can someone tell me if the problem I'm having is black crush or this is totally normal?

Maybe you'd get an answer if your pictures actually showed up.... just saying..

Are the pictures not visible?
I re-attached the pictures to show the pixelation issue.
* I came to realise that the app "Filter your screen" does help with the Pixelation issue significantly, but not perfectly.

Hmm. No pixelation issues here.

Could someone explain about the bluish blocks? It's really ugly compared to the iPhone 4S.
For the gray image, you can see the transition from light gray to dark gray, the blocks are visible too.

It could possibly be a low quality version of the video. How is the screen when you perform other tasks? When using the phone to watch youtube check if HQ is enabled and if watching over 3G or HSPA network make sure that 'High Quality over mobile' is enabled.

I've tried all normal quality, HQ and HD quality, the pixelated blocks are still there, even on a 6000 x 4000 image, once there's transition from white to gray, gray to black or vice versa, ugly blocks will appear.
I've tested the gamma calibration with the "21-0 image", I am able to see a gradual fade from 21 to 7 only, 0-7 is pure black.
Help please?

Could be a defect with your phone. You could also try flashing a newer firmware and see if that fixes the problem.

I'm on LF1 now. It's already the newest firmware here in Malaysia if I'm not wrong?
Well, I'm able to get a significant 'fix' by using the "Filter your screen" app, but it's not perfect and it may harm my screen if I use it in a long time frame. So I guess it's not a hardware issue?
Is there any good solution for this?
Helps are appreciated.

The newest unbranded firmware (flashable via ODIN) should work fine on your phone. Yours is the first I have heard with this problem.

We could explain them if we actually had them.

1. Is there any firmware newer than LF1?
2. Replacing phone here in my country takes at least 2 weeks and I don't have any spare phones.

Green pics in low light...w/o flash!

Anyone else?
Just got mine and every other issue is non existing except a greenish/yellowish tint with a purple hue around the corners in low level lighting. ( I guess it heats up a bit and there is a microscopic chip missing on the very edge of the cam lens), but other than that, the phone is flawless ......so far....

I've been pondering it, but I've seen so many other people with the green pic issue, that i figured it was widespread, and would end up with another with the same problem anyways. I have no other problems, except the light leakage, as you mentioned. Any other minor bugs I had at first went away after a factory reset or two. Anyone have any idea if the green pic issue is hardware or software related?

If its that widespread I'm hoping its software for the people that have the problem...
I've seen over 10 EVO 3ds (family, friends). Not one of then have a hulk tint to their pics...
I've see about 3 tilted screens
One that has a bad battery driver makeing reboot all the time
And all of them have pretty bad light leakage/bad seal at the bottom..
Kinda makes me wonder who the **** quality checked these phones.. and why they still have a job :/

All depends on the store manager one or two for sure... But they become kinda arrogant after that...
You do have a 1 year manufacturing warranty which you can use multiple times if needed (to get refurbished phones only). By calling sprint and asking to speak with "advanced device exchange/tech department"

I'm on my 3rd phone. My first o e had the green pictures. And one the pictures were blotchy and the camera lenses were not even close to being aligned right. 3rd one seems ok so far. They all had light leakage including the current one.

Setting my ISO to AUTO fixed my dim/green tinted picture issues esp. in 3D mode.

Latest update fixed the cameras green hue issue

So I decided to try out the deodexed version of the OTA here.

Now I cant reproduce the green hue no matter what. Another member already confirmed the green hue is gone but can anyone else that has updated to the latest firmware see any difference?
Here are some pics I just took.

That's weird because I'm not experiencing the horrid green hue anymore because of this new update. Try doing what the guy above me said.
That's not the green shift. That's just image noise due to the poor (low) lighting. If you had the green shift, the whole couch would be green instead of a noisy mix of green and purple.

The green is gone on my phone also after the update.
Took a lot of test shots last night.
The only time I could get the green was in very low light trying to photo a distant object. The flash on the phone is only good for a few feet away.
Tried using different setting then used default with jpo instead of mpo file type.

Fixed mine too. Is anyone aware of a list that tells us everything that HTC fixed in this update? I originally thought that the icon issue was resolved too, but it's resurfaced.
Reflashed three times and its still there. I do , however, get an error when flashing. Something about format and blk dev/block/something something......

the problem with threads like these is that it is mixed with people who know about photography/cameras and people who don't.
if you are shooting indoors -- this is always considered low light. you can turn on all the lights in your house, but it will be nowhere as bright as the sun outside. shots indoors are generally going to be poor unless you know what you are doing.
if you are getting green hues (without the flash), then set your white balance to the appropriate light (ie fluorescent if you are in the bathroom with fluorescent bulbs).
These are good examples of the green hue I was having before. One is taken outdoor with adequate lighting at about 6pm. There was plenty of sun out still. Sun didnt set till 8:30pm. Garage door is supposed to be cream and driveway your regular gray unpainted. The next image is indoor with a 60w flourecent lighting. That blanket is supposed to be brown, closet doors and my sock lol are white. The walls are green though.
This first one below at night with flash. After that is the same floor as my first post under my office desk with the power strip.
So you dont have to go back to the first page here is the shot after the update that I posted in the beginning. Same floor as above just different corner.
I understand the difference between indoor and outdoor lighting, but first of all: the auto white balance should already change it for, hence the name "auto". And second : my og EVO, my old mytouch, and my blackberry never had this problem. I've only seen it on the 3vo.
And I really would like to know if the update DIDN'T fix the issue for anyone else. Thanks.

Screen quality

So are the screens on these suppose to have dingy colors? The colors seem really washed no vibrant colors at all...also seems pixilated real bad.this how screen suppose to be?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Well asking first what type of screens are you used too? I have a Galaxy note and it is far punchier in the green, blue, and red colors. But that's Samsung they over blow their colors. Where on my Galaxy note the whites are blueish and the primes are pure white.
Obviously my notes screen and text is harper being its the same resolution on a 5.3" screen.
I still think my primes colors and screen is good. Maybe post a pic of yours, perhaps yours has a defect.
Reboot and go into performance mode/ out of powersave mode.

and this!
and immediately put the yellow offender on craigslist.
I hate yellow tinted screens!
Great screen on the LGOG. What I notice from those pics right away is how much screen real estate you lose with on screen buttons!

Wow I had no idea the usable part of nexus screen would make it seem that much smaller
the best phone ever
Nice comparison, thanks! I like the location of the notification light on the N4 better but I'll take the better screen over that nicety any day!
oh wow what a difference
i was under the impression that the same screen was used in both devices

I think this has to be the best display I have seen on a phone. My One X is a beautiful display but it is too saturated especially in the reds. It makes peoples faces appear way too rosy. I am surprised by how tinted the Nexus screen is though. That is WAAAY to warm! What's really crazy is how much a difference in visible screen is present with the lack of on screen buttons. It's even more sad is that the phones are basically the same size so there is no rhyme or reason to use on screen buttons especially with how our capacitive buttons completely blend in.
Wow I know I shouldn't be bumping old threads, but this really puts the whole NAVBAR debate down the drain for me. I like having the option of having the on-screen keys, but looking at a phone the same screen size and seeing how much is actually cut off with on-screen buttons just seals the deal for me. Long live the OG!
Yeah, I was using the nav bar on my OG for a while, but missed that extra bit of screen area, so I switched back. Not a big fan of the placement of the two outside capacitive buttons on the OG either though. The LMT Launcher app is a godsend.
Wow. There is definitely a major difference there. LMT launcher makes it all the more tempting to do the N4 conversion, though. Basically makes the OG a BETTER N4. LOL

On another note, I almost snagged a GS3 that someone left in class but I was a good samaritan and gave it to my professor
I love my LGOG but I hate it when it limits me from turning the brightness up because of the phone temp smh

Did you now know you can convert your LG Optimus G into a Nexus 4 now! Everything but full internal storage and HDMI output works!

The screen thing is a simple code to change, mine and many others don't have this issue anymore, expect that it will be written out of newer custom roms soon.

I've got two LGOGs and one has that yellow tint. It drives me nuts!

Good to see people getting into this phone and making things happen. Much love for all the devs.

Ya I'm just happy that this phone is being supported and not be left alone to die.
I miss my N4, I think I might pull it out of the drawer. It doesn't have the yellow tint!!!

I have absolutely never have that problem but I'm running stock. I crank my brightness up all the time and have never seen this warning.
