I just picked up a second SGS2 for my wife. She does not care about a bunch of custom stuff on her phone. She wants it to "just work right" as she puts it. I do however want to root it for the purposes of CWM rom backup and app backup. My question is, will the genuine update of ICS automatically bring the brick bug with it if I update OTA or through kies? I know I need a different kernel for cwm etc. Looks like maybe I want the stock rom from the Semi16 thread?

That's the way I would go.
Stock ICS UCLE5 with a custom kernel is an option. Stock Gingerbread with a custom kernel is another option. If you root and install a custom kernel, the phone will not update automatically, since it will not have the stock kernel.
My son's phone is still stock Gingerbread 2.3.4 with Entropy512's daily driver kernel which I installed for him way back in December.

I am having this doubt, my currently rom is the 2.3.3 orange stock one KH1 and I am able to update it to the 2.3.5 KJ4 now, but the thing is that I've rooted the rom with the zerg-rush method instead of changing the kernel for a CF one...
I am having the doubt if the root changes made by zerg-rush could interfere in the update process or instead it will just replace everything (but the efs folder, right?) for the new kernel and so on.
Thanks in advance!
Okay, I can confirm myself its as I said, a new kernel is put there so its irrelevant if you had rooted or not, you will just appear with a non-rooted new kernel.

I was in exactly the same situation, after updating i used the KJ3 cf-root5 option it offers easier/better flashing

Hi every to every one i recently upgrade my SGS2 to ICS 4.0.3 but i found it full of bugs, i mean a lot, (by the way wait until the official release from samsung, thas my opinion) like the non data network miss
My question is, is it safe to downgrade the Phone to GINGERBREAD?
Gosh i love this page
Yes its safe, just make sure to properly install a Gingerbread rom. Next time, just make a backup before installing a new rom so thats its easier to revert back to old rom.
By properly you mean official? Also any gingerbread like 2.3.6? And not the phone stock firmware.

You can check if you have made a back up by going into Rom Manager, manage and restore backups, have a check in their. If you have made a back up the just restore using that back up.
The CWM just gave me the finger XD i do a clean install of the ICS just in case but dont occurred to me to do a backup

search on the original android dev forum in here for the stock roms, download whatever you want to downgrade and flash with odin you will be back to GB 2.3.6 or lower if you want to

You will need a stock kernel to go with that as well
yeah its save i did it too.
I figured this will be asked before long. I read some of the long thread on upping to stock 4.0.3 but didn't see any definitive answers.
Here is my situation. I've had my phone for six months on stock 2.3.6 using Entropy's rooted package. Honestly, right now I don't want to run any custom ROMs. I may run CM9 once a final version comes out, but I don't want to bother with the nightly builds. I haven't had any problems with the stock firmware.
So, the other day I lost my phone. Fortunately I had an upgrade, so I got another SGS2. I again loaded Entropy's rooted package, and then upgraded to stock ICS from there. Everything went fine with the upgrade, but I lost root (not surprised). Is there any way currently to root 4.0.3 and keep the stock kernel and ROM?
I mainly want root to enable wifi tethering, which I tend to use often.
At this time, I don't know of any way to root the stock UCLE5 without replacing the kernel.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
Ok, thanks for that. Apparently FoxFi enables wifi tethering without root. I'm sure someone will have a rooted package soon. I look forward to a final CM9 release.

If you're already rooted, couldn't you just use Mobile Odin to flash the stock UCLE5 package with everroot?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
You could go back to entropy's rooted GB package and then do as mattdm suggests...havent tried it though.
I have rooted stock LE5 with LE5 kernel but it does involve flashing the SGH-I777CWM recovery kernel, temporarily flashing a 3.x.x kernel to get root injected to the LE5 system, then some file manipulation/repackaging to include the LE5 zimage and flash again, and then pushing the recovery .img (or use rom manager app) to make it all happen...not a simple process if you've never done it but in my case it was worth it.

Yeah...I'd choose Mobile Odin over that mess.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
hey it's not that much really..and if you've already flashed LE5 and set it up, going back to stock takes a few steps in and of itself. This is just a well thought out, calculated, then executed process not some "mess" as you refer to. So...if you're bold enough to use more than three brain cells...including the ones that tell you to show some couth when you post! ...
then by all means use them and try your own method to root...as I have.
Medical science has proven that the need for utilizing fully cognizant brain function early and regularly will prevent onset of Alzheimer's....I'm just saying'.

If you just need root, not need recovery or other kernel, use this:

If you need to use recovery, use other kernel like Siyah or Entropy
Are there any custom roms which are better than the latest stock rom for the galaxy s2? I'm new to all this so this could be a stupid question.
I want to root my phone and maybe flash it with a custom rom. I have never upgraded the stock firmware on my phone because I did not want to lose the data in my apps and now I want to upgrade the phone and keep everything so I'm going to root the phone and use titanium back up. My android version is still 2.3.3.
Why do people flash an insecure kernal? (except for the reason of rooting the phone using odin)

Better or not is subjective. The only way for you to find out is to try it out yourself. Someone else's opinion of better probably won't match up with your opinion or mine.
However, most custom ROMs will require you to do a full wipe of your phone, which means you won't be able to fully preserve your data... so you'll have do stick with your plan of root first, and use TB to save your app data. You can then restore your app data after you install whatever ROM you want.
Insecure kernels are used to root, there's really no other reason for them to be flashed.
If you want to invest time in your phone and tweak it to the maximum, a custom rom / kernel is recommended. They often contain extended settings which can improve comfort and performance of your phone, but they also require some technical knowledge and carefulness.
If you are just happy with your stock roms functionality, there is no need to change.

I don't mind investing time, I want to tweak it to the maximum and be able to do anything I want. I was planning to just root it using super one click, backup my app data using titanium back up and then upgrade the stock firmware and then root it again so I can restore the app data again. As I am new to do this, I'm doing proper research so I don't do anything wrong. I might also flash a CM Rom to my phone if I understand how to. I don't understand the insecure kernel and how it is different from the stock kernel.
Where did you learn to do all of this?

Yeah that's exactly what I'm going to do. Just thinking if I should root it using an insecure kernel or super one click.
Here's a guide to rooting Gingerbread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803530
Don't use Super One Click or anything, use a CF-Root kernel. When you flash the compatible kernel you'll be rooted and have installed also ClockworkMod Recovery which will allow you to install custom ROM's.

So I root the S2, backup my apps, upgrade to ics using kies and then root again using CF-Root Kernel and restore apps.
Should I upgrade to ics using kies if I want a custom rom?
Try resurrection remix 2.6.1 fastest stable ROM I have ever found
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I just did this yesterday.
First root gingerbread.
Do a full nandroid backup.
Backup efs and apn using the guides on this forum.
Backup SMS using SMS backup.
Sync contacts to google or export to sd card as vcard.
Backup apps and data using titanium backup.
Copy all data off the phone onto your computer just in case.
Perform a factory reset.
download latest firmware from sammobile.com and flash onto phone.
Root using cf-root and use import or sync to retrieve contacts, SMS backup to restore SMS, and titanium backup to restore apps and their data.
At this point you should have a working phone with only call logs lost.
First couple of charges after a flash the battery will drain quickly but will settle down after that.
You just want to have rooted stock? You'll need to upgrade to ICS first before flashing a custom kernel.
What you could do, is upgrade to stock ICS through KIES flash a CF-Root then proceed from there.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Tried most ROMs and resurrection remix is probably the best all rounder, much smoother than stock but still not had a custom ROM or kernal beat stock on benchmarks.

If you are still on 2.3.3, I would recommend you to root it with zergrush method because it doesn't increase the binary counter.
Go to this link to download InitialCFRootFlasher.zip (from Chainfire), and then download CF-Root kernel of your firmware. Follow the instruction carefully and you S2 will get root with 0 binary count. This wouldn't work if you have updated your firmware to 2.3.6 above.
There are rooted stock ICS firmware which can be flash directly using CWM Recovery, so there's no need to use kies at all.
I would recommend Rootbox. There are two, one in jelly bean, and one in ics. Either one is really good.

I went through your thread but CF hasn't made an insecure kernel for KH2. A few users had the same problem and used KH3 as stated by CF but some ended up running into difficult problems and some had no problem. Should I use KH3 to root or should I use another method. I only want to root gingerbread so I can back up app data. I might then factory reset and update the stock rom or flash CM10.
ATT Note I was running custom Roms before but kept having problems so I Decided to go back to stock using this Guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634087
got my Flash counter at 0 everything is back to stock and all back normal
now is there a root method that i can root my phone without tripping the flash counter? for the stock ICS 4.0.4 From Kies
I would prefer stock Kernel if that possible all i want root for is to remove some bloatware I dont care about anything else just wanna get rid of these stupid ATT crap
Mahalo
Is there a partiular reason you want to keep it bare bones stock? Or do you just not want custom rom/kernel? ::Edit:: found a much better place here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740367 that has everything you need!
ya i dont want a custom Rom cause i had so many problems and i just said **** it im going back to stock and all i want is root
I been to that thread u have me a link to before but i see no way to Root the Offical ICS Rom from Kies
there is only root methods for the Leaked Rom
are there any root only methods for just stock? no custom kernel Rom etc..
On the thread it says rooting official ICS ROM
