Post OTA Root Thread STICKY REQUEST! - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ok, the "How to Root" thread and the various ROM threads are getting confused between those that "unlocked" vrs. "soft-rooted" vrs "hard-rooted" vrs. those that accepted the OTA and those that didn't. Plus we have those that were rooted but tried to unroot before taking the OTA. With the "how to root" thread and others there are instructions that don't work anymore if you took the OTA and, while there may be explanations of the issue, they are burried deep in the thread
What we could use (and hope this thread becomes) is the place for devs to post progress on Rooting the LTE for phones that accepted the OTA and, as methods are developed, people can respond with issues that may arise.

Great idea! Why don't you consolodate all that info, format it nicely, and put it into OP so we can all benefit.

how about people just read properly
without jumping to flash anything that pops up on their screen or clicking every one click method that they see

Or maybe people can be polite and not so judgmental and be helpful instead of walking around thinking your better than everyone else.

And on top of which, there are plenty of people that will be getting the LTE from here on out that will have the new update on it already and those that were waiting to root until an ASOP ROM came out that saw no reason not to accept the OTA since they had not rooted yet.

I don't think you realize how involved it would be to compile that information, present it cleanly, and keep it up to date. I emphasize keep it up to date because this info changes every single day. There are numerous root and unlock methods, most pre-OTA, some partially work post-OTA.
As a non-dev but android enthuisiast, I check relavent threads about once a day to follow progress and even doing that I could never keep up with everything that's going on.
I'll admit my previous post in this thread was a bit snarky but people have to be realistic. Unless someone has the time and dedication to just do it themselves, this request won't happen simply because someone asked for it. If it does happen, the information will just become out of date in less than a week!
Finally, I have some advice for people eager to root and/or flash roms. Sit back and wait a few weeks. HTC just released the kernel source a few days ago and the real magic will start to happen. The new OTA will almost certainly be rooted and unlocked and someone will create a noob-friendly procedure to follow. Your best bet is to watch for updates to the stickied threads in the development section(s).

Miui camera with ffc support

I'm trying to get the latest camera, v17 I think, onto my thunderbolt. I downloaded the Miui rom for the Nexus S since it is the only one I know of with FCC support. I then pulled the camera apk out of that rom. The apk was signed, installed on my phone, and had its set permissions set, however it still FCs. Does anybody have any idea why it is not working?
I've attached the apk in case anybody is interested.
Ok, really, this is a question, not a dev thread...
Maybe because it was made for the Nexus S, which isn't the Thunderbolt.

Sorry, you are right. I am just growing very tired of attitude here. When posting to correct others on what forum to post in, or be a smart ass becomes more important than actually helping, there is a problem

When people don't take the time to search or post in the appropriate places making threads unnecessarily long and flooding them to the point that others with appropriate questions for that thread don't get answers and many stop even attempting to skim, there is a problem
A place for everything and everything in its place.
I know this is off-topic of the OP and I'm not intending to fan any flames. I just don't think people that actually want to improve this place should be the ones getting *****ed at. Try pointing the criticizing finger at the ones that are too lazy to spend the 2sec search to find the answer or appropriate forum themselves.
And yes, I realize that by posting this in this thread, I'm somewhat acting in contradiction to what I've said. But, when in Rome, eh? It's on topic of the last few posts anyway.

Posts such as his simply make it impossible for those of us that do search, to find real answers. Which is exactly what happened, I searched, and found posts that looked to have answers, instead I find someone complaining about where the post is.
If you want to make this a better place, you educate, but still help, then when later people come looking, there is an answer too.
Everyone should have realized by now that some people just won't search. For whatever reason, be it lazyness or ignorance, its going to happen. Cursing and flaming isn't going to help the situation at all. I understand people get upset, but we need to understand that its going to happen.

So how did you get it working? I tried from the link in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12164180&postcount=1 and it doesn't work. I flashed, then pulled the apk into /system/APP, then installed the APK (the method outlined in the thread) and it didn't work. I also just tried installing the APK from that zip independently, but it didn't work.
Also, FWIW, I searched Google and it took me here, so flaming about not searching doesn't really help those of us who actually searched.
Like info on netflix info you get everything but what your searching for.......search sucks........

ROOT status: latest gossip on progress & ETA

Been spending too much time flipping back and forth between the dev forum and here trying to find the latest scoop on what is going on with a permanent root solution. With the threads getting closed and people getting banned over on the dev forum, not even the devs are posting any real updates there any more. And here... the threads are broken up. So how about one consolidated thread to talk about status, rumors, etc.? ONE place to go to get the latest scoop.
For example, TeamWin posted on Twitter yesterday that there are no big announcements and they've run into a lot of roadblocks. Also said something about having to try different avenues now. Sounds like permaroot could take a while. Maybe someone posted that info here somewhere, but it's hard to tell where to look any more to find the latest status, rumors, and talk about root. Even the devs have given up posting in the dev forum.
Mike
I think it's time to put the screws back to HTC to make good on their "promise"
This phone WILL be going back if they don't unlock it.
It's ok, as good as these devs are... I never really expected full root unless HTC unlocks the phone.
I just hate that this site, well at least the 3D section has become retardedly over moderated. Perfect example of someone who doesn't need a bus patrol badge IMO.
In before thread lockdown lol

Yep that's exactly what I was about to say. Heck, it's even stickied at the top of the dev page.. Not sure why this thread exists.
If you guys actually want success with the return under 30 days policy, you need to give that threat to the CARRIER and have them place the pressure on HTC. It will NOT hurt the HTC bottom line if you return your phone to sprint. Sprint already bought the phone FROM HTC. So it hurts Sprint, not HTC.

That thread (and the other one there) don't do the job. That's why this one exists! First of all, if I only wanted to be updated once a day, there wouldn't be a worn out blank key between F4 and F6 on my keyboard.
Second, us "normal" users can't post in that forum and those threads are not updated as regularly (or as well) as you say. Right now, if you wanted to know the latest status (from Twitter) that says "#teamwin No big announcement tonight. We hit some pretty big road blocks. But I'm working on a new angle to Fre3dom" you can't find it any place but here. People who have their ear to the ground should be able to post what they find... when they find it.

You won't get an ETA because one can't be given yet. Until someone actually achieves a full unlock, you can't possibly say how long it will take. You just keep trying different things until you break through. Once a full unlock is achieved then it's a matter of hours or a few days before it will be released so that the unlock can be put into an easy-to-use format & combined with other nice things like a custom recovery. There's also no telling who will find the unlock. It might be TeamWin or Unrevoked or someone else.

Guys, can we please use better judgment when creating new threads? Many threads are redundant and is only cluttering the board. The Hero and EVO 4G boards were cleaner and more mature, then again maybe its because newer posters have less experience with forum etiquette. There are threads that adequately address the root status and progress, you can't get updates like a stock ticker. Your unrooted phone won't gain a thing from minimal updates, and asking for more than an update a day is a bit impatient. Let the devs work in peace, they are not obligated to do this and I'd rather they try to achieve full root rather than worry about reporting news. Even when they update no news they get criticized?
Not trying to be a **** or anything, but this is getting embarrassing. I have been getting tired of XDA because of the EVO 3D board, and thats a shame. I've seen devs walk away because of the behavior of people and to be honest its hard blaming them. If there is an update it'll be in the threads, the info is not hard to find. Let these guys work, they hammered away at code over the holiday weekend too so give them a break.

I think that this thread is better judgment. The Op posted that he wanted to discuss status, rumors, etc... Go post rumors in the actual dev threads. Tell me how that works out.
Whenever anyone posts in the the dev threads they are usually told to go make a post in general. Thats what this op did. I would rather see this thread created to discuss speculation then see the mods freak out because people are cluttering up the dev threads and start locking **** down so that the real Devs have to go post to forums other than XDA to get the word / files out. THAT is embarrassing. Not posting a thread to help keep the dev threads clean. Its not in the Dev forum, its in the general forum.
Let it be.
Oh and yeah... I'm not trying to be a **** either. Just telling you how it is when the Mods freak out over people talking in the Dev thread.
And who did you see walk away? They werent dedicated to the cause if they did. A real dev knows "newbish" behavior and also knows you wont stop it. EVER. So if they left... I say to them... Bye bye.
Fred3dom is no root...no shoot Sherlock..do we need to be censored for asking questions? To some..like me...root is a step to a more important goal...s-off. I am basing my decision to spend hard earned cash for this beast. And if these threads are out of hand...go to any forum...see if there is not humor(sometimes not related to the topic)...see if there is not a release of ideas that are free flowing. See if there is not a bond or sometimes hatred for others. The rules state...this thing is called xda is for sharing of ideas...by the community for the community, developers of software for these devices and newbies that need help. If we have such strict rules...then why have this forum? Learning is done by asking questions and sharing knowledge..not be being so strict...you don't have room to ask questions...and ideas are free forming as is knowledge...they are not something that can be censored...get a grip. ****...we could't even say thank you to the people who work hard to reach a goal...I don't know if you ever had a simple thanks for good work....this is just as important as info...and if you have not noticed...this thread is for root...for you it became a soapbox for yourself...what the he'll does that have to do with root?....a soapbox also...is not root.

Exactly! And try to find one thread where all the latest rumors and info is being posted. DOES NOT EXIST. That's exactly why this thread exists. So in keeping on topic, the latest rumor mill shows that HTC is apparently getting ready to unlock the bootloader on the Sensation. Rumors are the 3vo shouldn't be far behind. Details are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155755
My proposal was to keep ALL of this new info in ONE thread. Else you end up with the problem I was trying to solve which is every new little tidbit creating a new thread. Tomorrow "New email from HTC..." will be irrelevant to most and that'll scroll off the bottom of the forum and get lost for the people who haven't seen it yet. Post all this stuff HERE and we can keep up to date.
I know forum etiquette: I run my own forums. So I don't need lectures from mod-wanna-be's. But this IS a good place to keep all the info where everyone can see it: IF people stop posting every little tidbit as different threads.

HTC tool unlocks the phone, however does not provide S-off for us. From my understanding there are developer versions of the Amaze running around and the only person I have seen with one is Xboarder. Not really that big of a deal I guess because Xboarder has a kernel flashing tool you can find in the development section.

Seriously? You didn't see the thread that said
Everything S-OFF - Think tank, General information, Q&A
So I am guessing you didn't see the part where it says:
There is no way to get S-OFF on a normal S-ON phone now.
You don't actually need to search. It's a sticky at the top of the Development section.
That includes the HTC Supertool.
It took me literally ten seconds to find the post you were referring to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413787
And the post #2 looks very familiar. Guess what? Nothing has changed or else we wouldn't have the other posts asking for s-off. Would we? I'm not trying to be harsh but this is why people get flamed. I'm not flaming you but instead I'm educating you. If I already posted an answer in that thread... did you really feel that need to start another exact same thread? And did you honestly expect a different answer??? Think about how frustrating that is for me that has been spending hundreds of hours trying to get us s-off. Just take it into consideration next time.
However if you had searched for the term "Amaze s-off" you would have been presented with the following:
[Q] HTC.com dev unlock vs. S-Off in Amaze
[TOOL] Easy Perm Root One Click for 1.36 or earlier devices only (granted that it's not very helpful)
[Q] How to S=off on U.S version T-mobile
Everything S-OFF - Think tank, General information, Q&A
Any progress on S-off?
But you just stated "i didnt see any thread other than mikes"
How is that even possible??? What did you search for to NOT get any of the posts above??? I'm puzzled as to how you couldn't find them.

Binary I respect your insight and your efforts here in this forum. There have been numerous posts recently speaking to the hostility and lack of basic decency here in the Amaze forum. I never experienced anything like this in the Hero forum. All I'm saying is that if people simply answer a question rather than "flame the noob" then this forum would be a whole lot better for it. It also would result in more useful hits coming up for people actually using the search button since the answers would be more plentiful. Flaming and rickrolling helps nobody.

Look at it this way: If everyone, noobs and non-noobs alike read from the top down, 95% of all question would be answered within the sticky before a new thread is ever created.
I agree that flamimg is counter productive, but the frustrations of the mod is well warranted. He's the one who has to clean up the mess.....

i think everyone is tried of waiting for official root for 257

this rooting and waiting for it for over 10 days, for 257 makes me wonder if i made a mistake in buying this phone as it seems devs are nt interested in this device, I envy now samsung owners as rooting never ever took so long, while we here have to go thru many steps to root 257 which i don't like to do.
Is this an indication of how the dev section especially for important things like rooting will be for every firmware, can somebody do something about this and contact the devs that do dev rooting to help us out.
It's the same story with the Z1. Sony fixed an exploit from the last build, so devs have to find a new one. My guess is that Doomlord and other devs are working on it, and it's clearly hard to find an exploit this time around. They'll get there, but give them some time. The FXP team is also in direct contact with Sony's dev team, and the FreeXperia Cyanogenmod ROM is a result of that collaboration. Why would Sony fix that exploit? Security. Not to screw with the devs, but people with malicious intentions.
Sony is one of the most dev friendly manufacturer out there (with Oppo), and this doesn't change it. They aren't actively trying to stop devs, like another manufacturer that ends with sung.
If you're really in a hurry and need root now, then downgrade to 532 again, root and upgrade again through OTA.

One of the most important things to remember on XDA is that its a community of people that want to help. Asking for an ETA, or insisting on a member to find an exploit quickly wont be received well.
This is my first Sony device, and I've found the core members active in this section to be some of the best Ive seen in my time here. Lord for example is almost always one of the first to reply with a helpful comment, Avetny, SpyderTracks... I could go on and on..
anyway like lord says its a new device, and give it time dude.
Thank you
you r right hamdogg i apologise for negative bursts

I guess people are waiting for vRoot to be updated. It's straight forward if we're on a firmware before 257, but it becomes a little more complicated if we're not. It's not hard, but it's a little time consuming with all the downloading and installing of software.
I wish we had a simple, one click solution that is made by an XDA dev that knows his/her way around these things so we aren't forced to wait for some "outsiders" to do it for us.

Click on your phone info.
Write down the last 3 digits if your build version.
If it is MJ7 enjoy your Samsung iphone or take the risk of Chinese infiltration with vroot.
If its anything else, type go to GOOGLE.COM and type in those 3 letters followed by the word "Root".
Good luck!
Doesn't get much simpler than that.. :sly:

Ok So my build version is MJ7.
Is it unlockable through the ROM/software here on XDA or any other reliable ROM/sofware?
Please can you guys list the instructions or a link that tells me A to Z what to do. Thanks!

You can't root using a reliable technique, and even if you root you can't install custom ROMs at the moment. Safestrap may eventually become possible.

Just to make sure, this S4 MJ7 Verizon cant be unlocked to run on Tmobile using a reliable method?
Sorry for acting like a total newb. And many thanks.
I have MJ7 also and I've looked at root alternatives and it's risky at best. Let me know if you find a less risky way.

The I545 is not simlocked, which means that you can run any carrier's SIM. There are SEVERAL threads here that explain what you need to do to run an I545 on T-Mobile. Unfortunately, the search function is broken yet again, but there is NO excuse for starting another thread on a topic that has been covered several times before.
I know, you can't tell, but this is a very frequently asked and answered question.

Nope i tried tmobile sim doesnt work
I love this website, but I still haven't used it once because I search through threads always find answers like this. Its truly amazing how the website owners have sections for different versions and different hardware. But constant trolling by veteran users is common.
This(android) is an open source project but that doesnt mean every one here knows what people are talking about. I get discouraged posts like the one above^^. I have been using android since it came out on G1 and still havent rooted any of my devices YET. This time I actually thought I would but you know what **** this.
Anyways last attempt? Can my device be RELIABLY(trusted) carrier unlocked so I can use it on Tmobile. Thanks.
Also is there a thread where I can lookup jargon/lingo/acronyms specific to this site/genre? Link please.

Perhaps you could post on one of the T-Mobile threads here and explain what "doesn't work" means, as they may be able to help you.
Non-Verizon SIMs work for me, but I'm not using a SIM from some other US carrier.

That's the guide to use your phone on T-Mobile. It's on the first page of the general section lol.
By the way, the forums are seperated by device and carrier because that's how the software works, it's different per device and the carrier that device uses. This is a site for developers.

Sorry if you thinking this is "trolling by a veteran user".
First, you need to understand: the i545 is not SIM locked. Any SIM will work.
However, there's some question as to whether or not that SIM will allow other US carriers to work. Mine works with a SIM that gives me AT&T data. (It's from a European carrier.)
Here's how you can answer your question. First, look at the top of this window.
There's a box on the top reading "Search this forum".
I entered "tmobile" there, then got the following threads:

Sorry. Hit send too early..
Basic steps are to get a sim.
Then go and see if it picked ip the APN settings. If not you should be able to create a new APN and put in the values manually. Search on xda for the values
Finally. Theres a thread in xda that explains how to download a phone info app. Which will allow you to set the phone radio to LTE/GSM.
last thing you want to check is that you can do wifi, sms, mms, voice mail, etc.

A lot of people do make things for themselves, I run my own crappy builds all the time as I'm learning. Of course the more experienced developers release stable work for the public. Regardless, the purpose of the site isn't to release software for the "everyday android user".
It's about the journey not the end result.
I really can't explain the purpose of this site any better than this post by Kyphur:
"I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position."

I ddnt mean to be like rude or anything guys. So sorry for acting like that.
Now honestly i Google about android rooting/self installin the new version and XDA comes up all the time, so I've known about website long time ago and I see that there are like 100s of posts a minute mostly by total newbs. I'm newbie to android and XDA but like actually do wanna learn this stuff. Thats why I even asked if there are threads/links to where I can brush up beginner stuff so I then if I stll have any issues I can ask the question in a technical manner or even understand different threads that have already answered the question(s) that I have.
As for developer part you guys are programmers and hackers and its your hobby and its pretty cool you do this stuff on daily basis, but for me that is too far ahead.
Now I have another device unlocked NExus S i got from tmobile back in 2011, I wanna update it to latest OS KitKat. I will now look up XDA all over myself, let you know how it goes. Hopefully it will work out.
Thanks again.
EDIT: P.S. the first day i posted search wasnt working. Or maybe I ddnt search the right sections. I'll do XDA search through Google now

I didn't think you were being a rude, but I just thought I would share with you post that explains the purpose of XDA very well. It might seem harsh because it's out of context & was originally directed at some a$$hole.
We were all newbs here, I'm no programmer I just like learning code because I like learning how all of this stuff works. I'm glad you want to start learning to. All I did in the beginning was google search "rooting" and a bunch of write-ups & video's came up that taught me a lot.
I think this all falls under off topic this is really not the place for senior members to try b!+ch slap junior members, staying on topic is how this site operates
