[AT&T] Take the OTA or not? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

My phone has been pestering me every 8 hours or so to take an OTA update. Now, I read that the most recent OTA removed global search option, something I actually like. Is there any way to remove the persistent notification that an update is waiting without root? Or am I going to have to keep hitting postpone until such a time as I decide to root/rom the phone?

Hitting postpone only works for a few times then it will update on its own.at least that's what happened to a few of us

You can just install the VoiceSearch apk to get full search back and the update does seem to fix some minor issues and have a better radio. Overall its probably worth doing the update imho

I completed the update this afternoon and am not sure what changed?

I bought my phone yesterday and it already has the update.

Not sure what I did but cannot get the update. I deleted some of the bloatware apps. When when I hit software update, it says I am up to date. I would not have updated anyway. I want my universal search.

Seems to already be a topic.

ota

im a bit confused i read the WIP root thread can we take the ota and still be safe and be able to get rooted ? or should be just wait ? the popup is annoying me
They said they found a exploit that might be promising.... Might is the key word.
As for the few dozen people that wanted to watch that horrible movie and took the update, only time will tell.
sent from thee beasto 3d
Well unless something new has happened we can't root anyway so why would it hurt to take it. I updated mine 5 minutes after I got it on launch day
Sent from my EVO 3D in the now or later network
Because the ota update may have closed the "hole" or exploit to root..
Never just take the first few updates until you confirm they are worth it. And to watch a movie that Seth rogan blows in and fix a few apps is not worth losing root, the ota might have just caused the root Nazi

Could I run a RUU and go back to before I took the ota
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
I took the update. Root may or may not ever happen... I had to get my phone functioning correctly. HTC may still unlock this bad boy too...
Ultimately I think you just have to decide what's best for u. Root will have to be attained on phones with the update eventually if development wants to grow.
I don't mind waiting because battery life has been really good for me... That's my main reason for rooting anyway. You may want it for different reasons
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
yea the could careless about the movie honestly i want root but i was reading about it should be ok to take the ota and till get root but idk
Team win said ota does not matter.
I took the OTA on launch day because I thought it contained the heavily anticipated S-OFF update...I didn't know the "hazards" of accepting OTA's and it possibly keeping the phone from rooting. I was glad to hear from several sources that the "most promising" exploit isn't OTA-dependent because HTC doesn't even know about it so an OTA wouldn't "close the hole"!

Go into HTC software update and uncheck the updater. Pull down the notification bar and click cancel on the update. Imo 100% do not take the OTA when they are on to an exploit this big. You have waited so long a few more days and we might have root don't chance it
Can s-off come out and play? You run but you can't hide

Do that and *poof* there goes your annoying ota reminder. Thanks for the tip Aray92. (Though I didn't find it so dreadfully annoying)
...adjusting to life without the trackball
I took the OTA, stripped off as much Sprint bloatware as I could, and I'm getting great battery life out of the stock ROM.
I'm holding HTC to their word that they will provide us with a means to root.
From what I have read the exploit is not in the Hboot or the bootloader.
From my limited knowledge we will need an htc ota to unlock the bootloader. That said I'm sure that update will include all previous updates in the file so what are you hurting by downloading the current update?

The OTAs thus far are fine, however, it is recommended to avoid any future OTAs as they may patch the exploit that was discovered today by Team Win.

I read that root is going to be possible both with or without the update. So don't worry about it cheesy. We will be able to root just fine as soon as its ready for public use, trust me.

Some Have Said You Just Need The Bloat, But Which Bloat Programs Isn't Specified. I Told Another Guy SBF Is The Sure Fire Way Of Knowing You'll Get The Update.
The only bloat I uninstalled were the games, golf & nfs I think. Thought they'd be safe cuz the os allowed their removal.

I sbf'd last night.
half to ensure the update, and half to try it out and make sure sbf works correctly.
edit:
I realize that the idea of this never being rooted is wildly unlikely, but we can go back to froyo with the sbf we have now correct?

Yes, you'll just have the reminder each boot that an update is available.
If anyone gets the update please let everyone know. I have been checking every hour since the news was made available.

The above Tweet from Verizon's support staff confirms that the Gingerbread/Android 2.3 update may begin rolling out as early as today for the DroidX2. This newest version should be coming to your DroidX2 within the next few days, and it includes the same version of Blur that can be seen on the DROID3 and Bionic. It also includes a series of bug fixes to improve many aspects of your device. You can see Verizon's .pdf file detailing the update,

"Even though the official rollout starts today, and a select few will probably start getting it, from the status of the Motorola focus group's soak test, it's likely that the full mass rollout may not start until Friday."

Not if you don't agree to Moto's terms and agreement at setup... or if you just remove or freeze the account apps when you do get the sbf up and running.
I SBF'ed and then rooted, installed recovery and made a a backup with all the bloat included... That way I can just use that backup, uninstall recovery and unroot and be good to go...
Matt from the motorola forums said:
So, the tweet actually says "Ginger bread is being pushed out systematically to our Droid X2 customers starting today."
"I think the key words are "pushed," "systematically," and "starting." To me that means you won't necessarily be able to pull it, since it says push. Systematically suggests that as usual, it will start small. And there are still a lot of hours left in the day for it to start."

So it's probably a good idea to SBF to stock or restore a stock backup to get the update? Not really caring about root now, I just want to see if Gingerbread makes this any faster. That will be the thing deciding whether I keep this or sell it and get the SGS2

I would be careful and not count on this. The Atrix one that just came out has a new bootloader and when people try to sbf to froyo it HARD bricks their phones. Go google and checkout atrix forums to see for yourself. Very serious. We don't know for sure at this time one way or the other how it will go with the x2.
Having never owned a device that had a bunch of bloatware on it or any Motorola smart phone, is it recommended to unroot/sbf if all i have done is freeze the recommended apps?
Wouldnt an OTA just rewrite everything I did anyways so it wouldnt matter?

Just recieved OTA update to att GS2.

Does anyone know what the update is, or if this is ICS? I don't want to get my hopes up. Says software update.
I have received this as well and wasn't sure if I wanted to update unless I knew what it was.

I am rooted with some apps frozen and some bloatware removed. I had no problems with the update. 2.3.6 I have yet to find out what it was for, or details. I think i noticed that when you scoll down a menu like in settings, it does bounce or spring and a color that fades come up. I think that is new but maybe just didn't notice it before.
Anyone with details please update me!!!!
Read the threads for UCKK6...
And heeere we go again - every time a Gingerbread maintenance update comes out, people will be all OMG OMG I'M GETTING ICS!!!!!!
Nothing wrong with a little enthusiasm. I find myself longing for ICS too...
BTW, any updated kernels coming from you? It's 7 days since your last... 121211 works fine for me for Unnamed 2.0.0. cheers.

AT&T Software Update

Hey, I looked around but couldn't find a thread about this (so please dont kill me if I missed one).
I just did a 'check for update' on my AT&T SGS2, and it apparently found one. It immediately started downloading it, without letting me pause/stop it. I shut down the phone within a few seconds, restarted it, but it started to download it right away again. I tried to find the process and kill it (it's apparently called Device Management), but it completed the download before I could. It then asked me if I want to install the update or postpone it for a few hours. I chose the latter option, since I'm concerned if this update could cause me more problems or if it's actually worth installing.
I have the standard ROM, albeit with some modifications. It's rooted, has the CWM recovery installed, and a custom kernel to allow me to OC it.
Has anyone installed this new software update yet? Does it have anything worthwhile? Will it cause me to lose my root/kernel/CWM? If so, would it lock my device down and prevent me from re-rooting it, etc. again?
Assuming I don't want the update, there doesn't seem to be an 'undo' option. I imagine I can use Titanium to roll the DeviceManager app back to before I chose the update and make it forget I ever asked. I had assumed that when clicking 'check for update' that it would ASK me if I wanted it first. Guess not.
In any case, any suggestions/feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

This has already been covered, it's the 2.3.6 update. Don't do anything other than flash the file uploaded here to your device using Odin.
You really couldn't find anything on this?
If you've rooted your phone and removed any of the bloatware then letting the update continue will result in it not being able to complete. It will leave your phone as it is.
if you didnt want to install the update, why click on "check for update"?

I checked the first few pages and didn't see anything about it. Later last night I found a couple threads that discussed the results in the update (ie: upgrading the OS to 2.3.6, which I didn't know was what this was for).
In any case, after the update downloaded and I postponed it, I wiped the DeviceManagement data (19ish MB), so I assume this will make it forget.

I didn't know if there was an update or what it was for. I had assumed that 'Check for Update' would do just (and only) that - check. Every other software program that had a similar feature would 'check', and if it found something, ask if you wanted to download/install it. Some would also tell you what the update was for or what it was updating. I assumed that would have been the case here.
Based on what I've found, it seems like the 2.3.6 update isn't really worth it, and has caused problems for others, so I'll hold off until ICS comes out.
I want mine to update to 2.3.6 but i can find anything i am on 2.3.4 and umnamed rom and i really want to put 2.4.6 then put the rom

What's the point of that? If you are running the latest UnNamed ROM then you are already on 2.3.6 there would be no point of updating to the official AT&T version.

Some people in here just amaze the **** out of me.
jury still seems to be out on whether or not 2.3.6 is worth upgrading to. Many users complain of battery problems and other weird errors, in addition re-rooting complications.
My phone is working fine and with the exception of the 'lock screen bug' that I would love to have fixed, i don't see any reason to upgrade.
However I'd love to be convinced otherwise.

Let the jury be absolved. 2.3.6, to make it clear, is very, very, very, very, bad, bad, bad, bad. Breaks HID bluetooth devices, has many issues, and is simply a stopgap between 2.3.4 and 4.0. Why they released such a **** version is beyond me.

20h - lost root
I did lose root after this update.
I keep getting incessant update notifications. On rooted 20g now, assume its either 20f or h. This crap from LG/Tmob needs to stop. After the first update i predicted this will go on and on and on until there aren't any more letters left in the alphabet but then LG may use double letters. Hopefully 20z will be the last one. I can't take this crap anymore. Make one fking rom, work out all the bugs, etc. and let it be a finished product! I'm tired of rooting, debloating, setting up all apps, and then a few weeks later a new update is out and i have to update or keep canceling notifications every hour or so. Fking ridiculous. Rooted can't get OTA update, will likely need to use LG tool which will never work with win8 64 or possibly spontaneously will work with w7 if i'm lucky and only after many attempts. Argghhh it never ends with fking LG. They make everything so difficult. I miss my old samsung.
Is 20h rootable yet? Bootloader unlockable in 769 tmob?

I think the camera is broken. In two of JB camera apps video no longer works. Even older versions don't work. Stock camera app still takes video but i hate it. Any more updates coming? Still plenty of numbers and letters left. I'm very tired of updating and setting up afterwards. Most retarded phone i ever had, pain in the ass.
