Long-time viewer, first time poster here on XDA. I just wanted to provide some information on setting up WiFi tether on mforminio7's SlimRom v1.7.
(1) Download WiFi Tether for Root Users by Müller, Lemons, Buxton from the Play Store.
(2) Open app, click Menu >> Settings.
(3) Set "Change Device-Profile" to Generic ICS
(4) Set "Change Setup-Method" to Netd (master)
(5) If applicable, set Wifi Encryption to your liking
(6) Scroll to "Routing Fix" and make sure it is checked.
Thanks to Müller, Lemons, Buxton for the awesome Wifi Tether app and mforminio7 for developing the nimble SlimRom.+
UPDATE: XDA member Cares has provided a link to SirGates' Wifi Tether v3.2 Pre1 app which recognizes the HTC Rezound. The link is:

The built-in wifi tether requires a verizon sim card. this bothered me a lot. tried this method, and it works. thank you very much.

Why not use updated WiFi tether which has a Rezound profile and infrastructure mode?

I have been doing it a little different than what was posted so maybe you can try it. May not make a difference but works for me.
**Someone else figured this method out and gets all the credit. I can't find the original post to link to.
1) Download Wireless Tether app and then Data Enabler widget from Market.
2) Set in WT app:
Device Profile --> Google - NexusOne
Setup Method --> Netd (master)
3) Toggle Data Enabler widget off --> turns off 3G/4G connectivity
4) Start tethering in WT app.
5) Toggle Data Enabler widget on --> turns on 3G/4G
Device should immediately show up as WAP and connect via infrastructure mode.
Works great for me. Hope this helps.

Thats crazy - I downloaded this and it tells me my "kernal will not allow the access-control, access-control disabled"...
I tried changing the device type, etc as you guys stated above, but it still won't start up the tethering.. any ideas?

Should still tether, mine does. Access Control just let's you grant or deny access to machines as they connect

odd - okay - will give it another try at home.. I had a couple guys try to find the wireless signal with their phones and no one could find the network. Will post back when I figure out if that is working or not.

Are there any roms or patches that will make the stock hotspot work? I am rooted.
wifi_tether_v3_1-beta5 works for me on 198_7 rooted. Set Device-Profile to 'Generic', setup method to 'Auto', I don't use encryption as I'm far enough away from neighbors not to worry. I use channel 6, 192.168.1.0/24 LAN, enable 'Routing Fix'. Comes configured with Google public DNS (8.8.8.8), works fine. Select 'Disable Wake Lock'. Works like a charm for me, 15+ Mbps down, 4+ up

BTW, this probably belongs in General, sorry Admins.
Flash a new kernel that allows the wifi tethering, i recommend Jokersax11's 1.3 or 1.4 kernel, they work amazing and you can use any wifi tether in the market

I am running home rom with 1.4 oc. I cant get thestockwifi tether to pass data. I need security. I dont want to run open.
No one has really find an interest in the stock hotspot we have to use wifi tether for now development on the photon isn't very big :/
Well there are different options on how to approach this, and it depends on which version of WirelessTether you are using. If you are using 2.0.7, your options are limited, but the 3.0 beta's are where the availability opens up on how many [Device-Profiles] you can choose from. You can reduce your output power to save battery with the older versions, but not the new ones for some reason.
Because Sprint has blocked you from downloading them, you have to sideload them. You can download it directly from google at: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ (Newest is Beta 11)
Here's what you do if you want to set it up in INFRASTRUCTURE MODE, otherwise it is defaulted as AD_Hoc:
Open up WirelessTether
Hit the *Menu* button and press Settings.
Under [Device Profile], select Google NexusOne (This is the most common profile for this mode, I've tried different ones. Most of them work)
Under [Setup Method], select Netd (master)
(If you wish to do so, select encryption and channel options.)
Scroll down and check [MSS Clamping]
Then when you press back and activate tethering, WT will hack and take over your stock Mobile Hotspot app and you will be broadcasting an Infrastructure network rather than an ADHoc one.
It is common to see "Mobile IP Response error" over and over again until your Photon finally handshakes itself into the network. Ignore it. Shouldn't take more than a minute if it doesn't do it on the first try.
Now you don't have to download any trial apps and turn this and that off... blah blah blah. You can also setup a widget to turn off tethering using this method.

When that happens, you have a Photon that needs to connect on 3G only first. Then after it's connected, you turn on 4G and let it take over the connection. It should work at that point.
Also make sure your bootloader is locked or you won't have 4G anyway.

Issue: Connects but then No Internet access
(I've already read other relative threads searched)
- App is "Wireless Tether for R.. U.." (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/)
- Has worked flawlessly for over a year until what seems like a few days ago. (no new apps added, etc.) - I am good about data usage.
- But now the Wi-fi tether starts, laptop devices connects to it fine, but then after 5 seconds laptops indicate "No Internet" (as no data gets to the connected device(s). Data on phone is fine though, just not through the wireless tether.
- Also deleted, and downloaded 3.1-beta14 apk just to make sure a recent app upgrade may have lost something... same result though.
Version is 3.1-beta2 (latest for Tbolt)
No ROM change ever made from Standard Thunderbolt/Veriz
Key Settings:
Device profile set to Thunderbolt
Setup Method = Auto (changing to Adhoc does not affect result)
New option "WiFi-driver reload" is checked (unchecking does not affect result)
"HTC routing-fix" activated (unchecking does not affect result)
Numerous restarts, reconnect attempts with different settings, etc. - nothing works.
Please help, it no longer works.
Anyone else recently experiencing this?
Have you tried an older version just to see if it helps?
Did you change a kernal or radios? Just trying to cover all the bases..
I could never get wireless teather 3.x to work at all. use the older 2.x versions
I use 3.1 with no issues

Download the latest version from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Select the NexusOne profile and activate wifi driver reload, mss clamping and routing fix.
The other options are up to you (security, ssid, acces control...) but it should work assuming you have an aosp rom. For sense i think it's the same except that you can actually choose the thunder as the device profile.
So if I use an aosp rom I need to select the Nexus one as the device profile

This worked for me. THANKS!!!
I've unlocked my Rezound and rooted it. I checked the root and its says "congratulations, you are rooted" With that said... I downloaded WiFi Tehter (just as I did with my last HTC Incredible) and tried to hook up my Motorola Xoom. The Xoom won't recognized the Rezounds Wifi but my wife's laptop will but then it won't get online. As a matter of fact, my daughter's IPhone can recognize the Rezound tether and get online.
I have tried every combination of settings to no avail and am willing to try ANYTHING at this point.
make sure you're set to 'Netd (master)' and not ad-hoc. Android devices don't like connecting to ad-hoc networks.

and have your wifi encryption(password) disabled.
are you sure you have root? http://download.chainfire.eu/204/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.zip flash this in custom recovery (i use amonRa) itll give you root on a stock or any rom. open superSU and update binary
download "root checker" from the app store (burrow apps)
start it up grant permission and be sure your rooted.
Also is your mobile data on? i know it sounds funny but i made this mistake before. no mobile data no tether but you can still connect.
also you need to be unlocked, on a custom recovery, and rooted.. i personally use an uninstaller to uninstall to the stock mobile hotspot app.. ive heard it interferes with the rooted apps.
Ok, Here's where I'm at:
On my HTC Rezound -
Device Profile - HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM)
Change Start Up Method - Netd (master)
Wifi Encryption - not checked
Change Channel - on channel 1 (2412 MHz)
Wifi-driver reload is checked
Enable Access-Control is not checked
Keep Alive is not checked
Shutdown Timer is not checked
Idle Shutdown is not checked
Quota Shutdown Limit is not checked
Lan-Network - 192.168.2.0/24
MSS Clamping is not checked
Routing Fix is checked
Preferred DNS - 8.8.8.8
Alt DNS - 8.8.4.4
And yes, the phone is rooted. I checked with the Root Checker program
On the Xoom:
Wifi is on
Advenced settings-
Network Notification - not checked
Keep Wifi on during sleep - Always
Wi-Fi Frequency band - Auto
Mac address - 40:fc:89:f6:b2:09
IP Address - 192.168.1.105
Bluetooth is off
The Xoom still doesn't see the Rezound.
Laptop doesn't see it either
So aggrevating!
I use the following settings on rezound for all roms. In WiFi tether:
#device profile: rezound
#set up: auto
#ssid: change it
#channel: 11
#routing fix: checked
I don't have internet so I actually use this app constantly for x-box live. WiFi tether has worked on every Rom I've flashed(all of them!). With the exception of aokp 1.1 which had WiFi issues

Is it possible to tether a rooted droid incredible 4g running the stock HTC Sense image that STILL has the unlimited data plan (I got the phone just before they killed it last summer)? I have a stock droid incredible 4g (Android 4.0.4) that I simply unlocked the bootloader on and installed/flashed SuperSU from TWRP. I apologize if my terminology is off as I am new to this. I have installed both WiFi Tether and FoxFi and have had no success with either program. I may be configuring something incorrectly or it may not be possible given I'm still on the unlimited data plan. I assumed that rooting my device would somehow allow Wifi Tether to bypass whatever verizon blocks on the unlimited data plans to prevent tethering. I have googled everything I can with regard to this issue and have attempted all the recommended fixes with FoxFi (rename the SSID, reboot the phone, disabled WiFi, etc...). I do not know how to configure Wifi Tether (tried the defaults and a few combinations I found on google) and have found very little to assist further with it. There are multiple device-profiles and setup-methods to choose from in addition to a bunch of other options, and am hoping someone know specifically what I can do or have a combination that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Simplified Questions:
(1) Is it possible to teather on a droid inc 4g with unlimited data?
***These Questions assume '1' above is true***
(2) Can this work in FoxFi, if so, how do I configure it?
(3) Can this work in Wifi Tether, if so, how do I configure it?
(3a) In Wifi Tether, I would need it set up to do a 'hotspot' not an ad-hoc network connection, no clue how to do this...
(3b) In Wifi Tether, which device-profile and setup-method should be used?
(3c) There are a number of options in WiFi Teather, which ones should be selected?
Solved
I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...
Simple, if your on a sense based ROM just use open garden https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=og.android.tether
And in settings select either generic ICS or rezound I forget its been a while but I know it works flawlessly
On cm which I am just use the built in tethering very simple
I use WiFi Tether (currently using 3.2-beta2). Works great. Fast, no drops, etc.
While I am running ViperLTE, I see no reason why it won't work with rooted stock.
In fact... I'm using it right now

I have found that signal strength/area is everything when it comes to speeds - tethering or otherwise. At work, I have intermittent 4G and my tethering speeds are so-so. I have to carefully put my phone in the right spot to get 4G, and that spot varies depending on the weather...
However, at home my signal and 4G are rock solid. 4G speeds, including tethering, are faster than my WiFi connection.
