I have a rooted TFP stock rom .28. Device was rooted using an automated tool on this forum.
Question: Is there a way to check if the CWM recovery was installed?
If not installed, is there an easy way to install it? Because it's hard to find on the TFP forums.
Forgive me for being such an amateur.

You have to be unlocked to install CWM or TWRP. Is your prime unlocked? You can check by rebooting, and looking for 'this device is unlocked' in the upper left corner.

No, the boot loader is NOT unlocked. Thanks for the heads up. I was looking for an easy way to wind up with an unlocked boot loader and CWM installed. Do you have an idea?

You have to unlock the bootloader using the official app from Asus. Links to download can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510760
Once you have it unlocked I recommend installing GooManager from the Play Store. Once you have it installed, tap the menu and choose Install OpenRecoveryScript. That will flash TWRP, which is like CWM but better and Prime roms appear to work much better with it.

Wow. Thanks a million. I will try it. Hope that unlocking the boot loader will not kill the root access. I don't know much about TWRP but as long as it has rom management and nandroid backup, I thin k I'll be fine

Unlocking will not change root access, I had root before unlocking. Remember, unlocking will kill your warranty! Asus will not longer help you, and you will not longer get Over-the-Air Updates!
TWRP is similar to clockwork, does backups and everything else. I recommend reading the tutorials in the dev section. You ALWAYS want to keep a copy of your backup and your currently installed ROM on internal memory at all times! No recovery has access to the microSD card currently, so if something screws up and you have to reflash, it will need to be on internal memory.
Again, read through the Dev section, there are lots of stickied threads with really good info. Watch the youtube videos on the video thread too.

*Main Question: How do I install a custom ROM without root or recovery?*
Hello Fellow XDA users,
I recently sent my Transformer Prime out to get repaired and when it came back, it was running .21 Firmware and ViperMOD Primetime no longer worked in terms of rooting the thing.
I already had the bootloader "unlocked" before I sent it out. I was surprised that they even repaired it (although, my letter was very strongly worded lol)
I read that the only other way to achieve root on the Transformer Prime without ViperMOD or another exploit is to "install a custom rooted rom"
I had every intention of downloading Cyanogenmod 9 when the device came back from Asus so this goes back to the original question. How do I install a custom rooted rom? I don't have recovery, I don't have root, but I have an unlocked bootloader. Does Cyanogenmod 9 count as a custom rooted rom? I appreciate your help.

You'd need a custom recovery on it in order to flash a ROM. As far as getting a custom recovery onto it, I'm not sure how to do that while being unrooted. I'm sure somebody else here should be able to help you out with that though. And yes, CM9 does count as a custom rooted ROM.

Yeah, .21 cannot be rooted at this time. You have to downgrade to .15. Try googling downgrading tf201 or something like that, because I had to do that too. Same issue and all.
Since the bootloader is unlocked, go into fastboot.
- Hold vol- while booting, then hit vol- again and hold until you get the 3 options.
- Choose the USB icon.
1. From fastboot open a command window in the folder with adb, fastboot and custom recovery.img.
-Command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
2. Once the recovery is loaded, you can then load a custom rom with root/busbox.
- CM9 counts, as well as AOKP. Any custom rom with have that installed for any matter.
3. This process works as long as the bootloader is unlocked. I have used it on mine when I got it new and updated when I got home. The only way to do this without the unlock is to downgrade, root, Voodoo OTA Root, update, restore root. Not worth it since you're already unlocked.

Thank you so much, I gotta give this a try now. I was scared about downgrading because I heard you can potentially mess up the device and brick it for good.
*EDIT*: What recovery do you recommend for this device?
HI,
I'm exactly in the same situation.
From #1 , it's not clear to me? how to do so?

On your Windows or Linux computer, go to the folder that has adb and fastboot in it. Also put your custom img there. Open a command prompt. Get su if you're
in Linux. Then use that command.

So I finally decided to go ahead and root my Prime with Debugfs and it all went well until I tried booting into CWM.
I'm on .28 and installed CWM with ROM Manager and tried booting into recovery and it just reboots the tablet. I tried it with the power button and volume down button but only got into that one screen with the little android and the wipe data selections.
Did I miss something? =(

Hi.
Why the mother flipping heck won't my Prime root?
I've tried the Zedomax 1 click script and ViperMODs method for devices running 9.4.2.11 and later (which mine is as its 9.4.2.28).
The first time I ran ViperMODs script I did all the tasks including number 3 to install the unlocker which seems to have run successfully as my Prime says 'this device is unlocked' in small white letters in the top left hand corner of the splash screen when booting.
But nothing has root privileges (I use Titanium backup to check).
What is going on, other people have rooted their .28s so why won't mine?
I have installed the USB drivers for the ADB interface and I've even done a full system restore on the Prime so that I'm working with a stock ROM but nothing helps
If anyone can help me to root my Prime I will let them marry my daughter* or take my son* as a slave (*as soon as I have one)
Thanks:crying:

I guess the first question would be, are you planning on putting a custom rom on the prime? If you are, they are all pre-rooted If you want to stick with a stock .28 rom look at virtuous....
If you are going to put a custom recovery on, which I am guessing your going to do since you have unlocked it, either go for an earlier version of twrp (2.1) or go the nvflash route, get the modified bootloader and then put on the latest twrp (2.2)...
I was going to root, use titanium to backup my user data and then try some custom ROMs. But I'm using another app backup program that doesn't require root now so I guess I can just go strait for a custom ROM lol. I got so hung up on why this thing wouldn't root that I forgot why I was doing it; D'oh!
So, on to flashing recovery then... why did you say to flash an older version first?
Thanks.

because the latest version requires you have the mobi modified bootloader which is only available if you follow through with the whole nvflash process. Not being familiar with your level of comfort/expertize if you use the older version you don't "need" to go the nv flash route right away... just gives a guy some breathing room.....
I have attached the older version or if you feel brave enough take the nvflash road..... it aint that hard if you follow the instructions... I can give some pointers to make it easier if you decide to go that way....

I just want to say a massive thanks for the help. I have now managed to get hairy bean 4.1 on it andnit is now fully unlocked and rooted. I still unfortunately habe thw inverted x-axis problem and from what I understand from what I've read the official jb4.2 will rectify this problem.
I can boot into the hairy recovery but not twrp I do the same reset/clear data as in the hairybean install instructions but then try to install jb4.2. The blue line goes to the top thwn it reboots but back into hairybean.
What am I doing wrong for this to keep happening?
Your help so far has been great and very much appreciated.
I thank you in advance for any further help that coukd direct me.

For HB2.2, there are kernels in the install options for the Reverse Axis

Hmmm I downloaded the 2.2 but I believe that I have managed to brick it in the worst possible way. It wont boot into recovery. When I get it into apx mode. My pc wont see it as driver installed. So I cannot push any files to it or do anything. Dohhhhh.

You need to at least get into the bootloader. What happens when you keep holding volume down and power button the same timer for about 20 seconds. Do not stop holding them when the prime restarts after 10 seconds.
If you get to some icons on the screen then we might be able to help you.
Sadly if I hold vol dwn and pwr it just goes to the asus logo screen. Not boot loader options what so ever I have bought a new mobo off ebay thinking that would have helped. But this one seems to just jam on the rck loader. Try the rck mode it reboots to the same option screen. Trying usb mode does the same. Factory wipe wnds up the same and the android option just boots back into the asus logo. I cannot get my head around the way these are built. With any windows os unless you somehow screw the bios you can pretty much reinstall from any situation. Why is Android so different? I enjoy a challenge as much as the next guy but this is ludicrous. I have just done 6 16 hr days at work so I am not the most patient person with this right now so I think on tues on my day off work I will start again and see if I can get this working and redeem myself. I do just want to say thanks for the help off this forum though as people do seem very helpful and friendly.

When you say that the new mobo can get to where the icons are, when you press volume up on the usb icon does it say starting fastboot and then freeze?
If it does we have a chance.

If it freezes there then you are in fastboot mode. Look in your device manager in windows and see if you have an unknown device or a fastboot device (names could have been changed to protect the innocent =] .)
If you have an unknown device then install the "naked drivers" from the dev thread to get fastboot working on your pc.
Let me know if you get this far and you see a fastboot device in your device manager.

wwjoshdew has how to videos on the development forum. Exact walk through. You have unlocked your bootloader good times. Now you must download his SDK links that are just for the Prime. Once that is done, download TWRP latest version from team win also in the development forum. Download the .blob or the .img rename it to twrp.blob put it in the same folder as your new android tools folder. Boot your tablet into fastboot mode Vol down + power go to the USB icon by pressing the vol down once you are over the usb icon press Vol Up and you will see fastboot. Now open a cmd window in the same folder as your fastboot and put the command that is on the twrp page. You will see on you tablet the blue bar fill up. Manually reboot tablet into the bootloader mode again and go to RCK and you should see the twrp recover screen start. Make sure you have SU on your sd card, and flash it. Now you are rooted.

People install TWRP 2.8.4.0 on supported FW (x.3.0.5 - x.3.2.3) through adb shell or with flashify app. Dont try this on your FW, x.3.2.7 - x.3.2.8 are not supported!!!
No, TWRP never bricked my device, I can easily go back to system.

If you can boot into system then good chance only recovery is hosed. Look in the recovery directory under root for an appropriately named .img file. This is likely a stock recovery and can be restored via adb or flashify. Reach out if you can't find the image or need to verify the MD5.
Awhile back I did something similar to a device running 3.2.6 (duh). Momentary panic! Restoring stock recovery was easy and opened up other options which I would not have tried with a borked recovery. Your choices are more limited being on 3.2.8. Safestrap + Nexus ROM is solid. I don't believe CM11 works with Safestrap. Rooted stock with gaps and sideloaded apps isn't bad either IMO .
Uhh, my device is fixed. TWRP did nothing to my device...

Ahh, sounded like you lost recovery. Glad all is well.
