[Q] How to root Asus Transformer Tf201 - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello everybody,
I tried to root my Asus transformer Tf201 unlocked. but when i used root program it said ACCESS DENIED...
Here is the list of the root programs with unsuccessfull:
- Flashbot
- Openrecovery
- Debugsroot
- Unlock device
- Vipermod_primetime
I also tried to downgrade the version of my tablet but also not success.
Please see below (in attachment) the version/configuration of my tablet, hope to get an issue from some of you to root it.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Please post this in the Transformer Prime TF201 section of the Forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1465 , I will ask a mod to move it for you...
Also have you looked into unlocking your bootloader with the ASUS tool and then using fastboot to flash recovery?

wwjoshdew has how to videos on the development forum. Exact walk through. You have unlocked your bootloader good times. Now you must download his SDK links that are just for the Prime. Once that is done, download TWRP latest version from team win also in the development forum. Download the .blob or the .img rename it to twrp.blob put it in the same folder as your new android tools folder. Boot your tablet into fastboot mode Vol down + power go to the USB icon by pressing the vol down once you are over the usb icon press Vol Up and you will see fastboot. Now open a cmd window in the same folder as your fastboot and put the command that is on the twrp page. You will see on you tablet the blue bar fill up. Manually reboot tablet into the bootloader mode again and go to RCK and you should see the twrp recover screen start. Make sure you have SU on your sd card, and flash it. Now you are rooted.

your recovery is trying to load things that are not there...you should have a prior and recent backup of your system...if so.. hook the phone up to your computer and copy the back up to your computer and open up that zip file....in it youll see a file named cache.img extract that image and then copy it over to where your fastboot file is.... unplug the phone...reboot into your hboot, select fast boot then plug it back in... you should see it say fastboot usb,,, now on your computer type this in
fastboot flash cache cache.img
it should send then write since youre s-off and then reboot into your recovery and see if you get the message still, try also reflashing the recovery... post back and let me know please...im curious myself.

youre right...the prob was fixed...thing was is that the recovery he was using wasnt allowing him to scroll through the options even after re-flashing the IMG. the phone owner wasnt the one who did the original flashing and wasnt sure on how to use fastboot to fix this issue... the recovery i posted in the most recent post allows you to scroll through the options and clear the cache and then reboot into recovery again and the problem should vanish...
I'm kinda thankful for hboot 1.5, it forced me to learn about using adb/SDK tools, I've downgraded since but I'm thankful I had to go through the bullsh**, ive learned a lot

Clockworkmod ?

I have a rooted TFP stock rom .28. Device was rooted using an automated tool on this forum.
Question: Is there a way to check if the CWM recovery was installed?
If not installed, is there an easy way to install it? Because it's hard to find on the TFP forums.
Forgive me for being such an amateur.

You have to be unlocked to install CWM or TWRP. Is your prime unlocked? You can check by rebooting, and looking for 'this device is unlocked' in the upper left corner.

You have to unlock the bootloader using the official app from Asus. Links to download can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510760
Once you have it unlocked I recommend installing GooManager from the Play Store. Once you have it installed, tap the menu and choose Install OpenRecoveryScript. That will flash TWRP, which is like CWM but better and Prime roms appear to work much better with it.

Wow. Thanks a million. I will try it. Hope that unlocking the boot loader will not kill the root access. I don't know much about TWRP but as long as it has rom management and nandroid backup, I thin k I'll be fine

Unlocking will not change root access, I had root before unlocking. Remember, unlocking will kill your warranty! Asus will not longer help you, and you will not longer get Over-the-Air Updates!
TWRP is similar to clockwork, does backups and everything else. I recommend reading the tutorials in the dev section. You ALWAYS want to keep a copy of your backup and your currently installed ROM on internal memory at all times! No recovery has access to the microSD card currently, so if something screws up and you have to reflash, it will need to be on internal memory.
Again, read through the Dev section, there are lots of stickied threads with really good info. Watch the youtube videos on the video thread too.

you can not reboot into recovery. you must ......1 turn off. 2 hold volume down. 2 press power until vibration while not letting go of volume down. let go of power but wait for screen to show letters and then switch from vol down to vol up and then let go and wait.
cwm is not the best recovery tool for tf201.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe in order to use rom manager to install cwm you need to have root.

This means you are still on the ICS bootloader.. First thing we need to do is get a version of TWRP on there that supports ICS. Do not use CWM on prime. Too easy to brick.

Can you get into fastboot? You do so by powering off the prime and then holding down the power button and the volume button the same time for about 10 seconds until you see icons appear on your screen. Then you use volume down to go over to the usb icon and then press volume up to select it. The device will say starting fastboot protocol on the screen and freeze.
Plug it into the pc and check device manager to see if it is installed.
Let me know when you get this far.
The pc recognize the prime. So far its good.
What should I do now?

There is a file attached to this post. Download it and make a folder on one of your drives on pc and extract it. (eg d:/twrp)
There is a bat file inside. Run it and follow the onscreen instructions.
After you get TWRP installed be careful what rom you are flashing and what recovery because they require new bootloaders and if you flash the wrong recovery for the wrong bootloader you will hard brick your device.
Which version of energy rom do you want to install.. Give me version number please.

The one you linked to should be fine. NRG has the bootloader upgrade and the TWRP upgrade built into the rom.
After you get it all flashed and working tho DO NOT flash another recovery as they will not be compatible. Never use that zip file I just gave you again because that will not be compatible and lastly Never use CWM again lol.
Good luck

There has only been 3 really.
There is the ICS bootloader the JB 4.1.1 bootloader and the new 4.2.1 bootloader.
Flashing a rom that isn't for your bootloader will not brick you.
Flashing a recovery that is not meant for your bootloader WILL brick you.

You can adb push a file but then you are going to need adb files on computer.
When you go to install select internal up the top and then go the folders in the list and select up a level to go to root on the left and then select external_sd. Anything in there?

Can't get them to work. Side load in TWRP won't recognize my watch. ADB works fine when booted into the OS, and fastboot recognizes the device. It would be so much simpler to just fastboot the files, then fight with TWRP and ABD. I have a copy of the OTA, not sure what files to pull from it to flash. I know that commands, just need the right files. Thanks though!
