A few questions about CM9 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What exactly is the difference between night build and experimental version?
Do they mean its not the final stable version??
Also when I try switch my phone off.. it just reboots itself.
I flashed the latest version of CM9 but the problem still exists.
Battery life, there is a lot of debate about this on the forums. For me personally, this is the first day of the rom and at the moment I'm sitting at 25% , being unplugged for 5 and a half hours with 69% on screen use. is that normal?

That question got asked and answered earlier today already.
There are NO final stable versions for CM9... for any device. However that doesn't mean the ROM is not stable, the developers are just aware of some bugs, tweaks and additions they want to have done before claiming it final.
Here's a table to get the relation between CM9 and Samsung ROM's:
CM9 Preview ==> Samsung Presentation
CM9 Alpha ==> Samsung Stable
CM9 Nightly ==> Samsung stable after 1. year
CM9 Stable ==> not present for Samsung ROM's
Experimental versions are builds manually compiled by the developers.
Nightly builds are automatically built every night from the source code and usually feature one of the pacman ghosts as compiler.
Also when I try switch my phone off.. it just reboots itself.

Is it attached to a cable?
Have you COMPLETELY wiped your phone when changing Rom?

Yes that's normal. Simple reason; you're playing with it far more the first few days than usually even if you are not aware of it.
Wait 2-3 days and start comparing. I have 1-2% standby battery drain on CM9 an CM10 preview with Sync enabled and 3G connectivity.
I'd recommend getting BetterBatteryStats though (free APK here on Xda) to see if anything drains your battery.

Thank you for your in depth answer. I did exactly that when installing the new ROM. It doesn't bother me that much, if need be I can take the battery out (when I'm over seas). Just seeing if it was a known issue or if there is something wrong on my end..
I don't really want to wipe and flash again as its taken a while to finally customize my phone the way I want it.

[Q] Crazy battery charge

I am on CM9 nightly and kernel that comes with it, latest updates always!
And yesterday I charged my SGS2 to 100% unplugged cable and at the morning when I checked it, it was dead! tried to go in download mode, it sayed battery level is too low! and really it drain 100% of battery in 8 hours idle!
Is it possible to fix such a issue?
Yes, by seeing what's using the battery, not by making a new thread with no useful information.

With the amount of battery threads that come up on this site it is surprising you haven't bumped into the routine of downloading betterbatterystats and seeing what is keeping your phone awake. You should also see if this happens on a fresh install with NONE of your apps installed. Completely stock with your contacts synced.
your issue sounds reasonable my device was awake on the 4/29 build, its best to talk about nightly builds in the discussion thread, charge it up and see whats keeping it awake
you wont get help without this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Cyanogen9 is still deep in beta, that means it isn't finished, that means if you have a problem it's because the ROM isn't perfect. Why would you make a forum post about this? It happened once, not even a few times, why the **** would you make a post about something that happened once and you have done nothing to get to the bottom of it? Seriously what.
There are many stable Custom ROM of Android 4.0.x that you can use instead of CM9 'Nightly Builds'....

isnt it weird that there are too many things that happen just once its not just this man anyhow wanted to post question exactly about this bug, dont want to bother you with other bugs
whatever, i asked coz i wanted to get an answer and hear from people who had had similar issue before

See this. While this isn't currently a "what's the best ROM" thread, the very nature of your question will result in the same debate those types of threads tend to generate.
Someone could really like a ROM and suggest it to you, and you try it, and you might decide it sucks. Try ROMs out yourself until you find one you like. Don't be lazy.

first of all you should ask questions in Q & A section not here...
nightly build == automatic build built by bots
experimental== manually compiled build by a developer.

Battery drain on s3 after installing JB 4.1.1

Hi
Last night i installed the [ROM][AOSP][JB][4.1.1][STABLE] SuperNexus - I9300 - BUILD 1 on my Galaxy S3 device and i noticed my battery is draining out like crazy. Cell Standby and Screen are using more than 40% each.
When i was using Ice Cream Sandwich i had the same problem but after installing the battery fix it all worked so tried the fix on JB and nothing.
Is there any other fix or solution for this?
Thanks.
No fix for this until cm sorts it. Live with it or go back to ics I'm afraid mate

That is not repeat not a battery fix if you read the post it fixes a misreported figure only .
battery drain is user start with Better Battery Stats and look for wakelocks .
Battery requires five days use from flashing a new rom .
jje
Screen will always use 40%+ unless you aren't using your phone.

Running the same build myself and experienced an 18% drop last night on standby with Wi-Fi on over 7 hours, i have flashed the latest Siyah kernel update today and ive every confidence this will increase battery life as when i checked the kernel wakelocks this morning the wakelocks were big, the CM kernel i believe is the main culprit in this instance.
Also take into consideration any apps / widgets you have which update and any sTuff you rarely or never use freeze in Titanium backup and also go into advanced in Wi-Fi and set to never or only when plugged in and this will make a difference.
And finally don't use Juice Defender or any other battery saving apps as they use up more battery than they save!

I installed syiah kernel s3-v1.5beta5 over CWM yesterday and still no change, Cell Standby is now using 70% while screen dropped to 7%. I will
now try to disable all automatic updates.
After installing [ROM][AOSP] [4.1.1] Liquid JellyBean Beta 1.1 battery works pretty good without even installing kernel 1.5beta4.
Cell standby dropped to 37% and Screen to 27%
I must say this ROM works faster and adds a few cool options for personalization.

- I recommend you to go to stock or modified ICS , simply functioning Roms and stable .
- JB you can flash it just for fun , still under construction and testing , can't litterly judge it .
You may want to try different modems. Cell standby is mostly not influenced by the ROM but your reception and the flashed modem.

My operator is Movistar from Spain and i am currently outside of the country. I flashed my S3 to JB after leaving the country and now i have no reception, can this be the reason why Cell Standby is always around 70%?

Battery Rom

Hello,
I've a touchpad, and i'm planning to install Cm on it,
1. Which Rom offers the best battery life?
2. Is it the official?

No one can answer that, it all depends on how you use your device. Install something like "Pimp My Rom" and tweak things for good battery life yourself. It's a free app available via Google Play.

I jump stay nightly cm9 to 10. On cm9, when screen off it drain battery no matter its deep sleep or not. Like when i woke up after a 8 hours sleep, battery down to like 85 from full charge. And on cm10, it at least stay around 98 at most. Only thing is that chrome has issue with cm10.

I use jcsullins ' cm10 preview. My tablet always goes to deep sleep and I lose less than 1%/hour.
Go to the play store and download an app tracking application. CPU Spy is good, and there are others which would let you know what's using the battery. For the life of me, I can't remember the names, but I'm sure someone will, and will post them for you.
Good luck.

Um, I completely wipe off cm9 before install the jcsullin unofficial cm10. I didn't really do much. Try do a full wipe and see if it fix, cause what I'm thinking is that there should have something messed across some files from different ROMs.

[Q] battery gone from 72% to 5% in 30sec -lagging-

Hey everyone
I got little problem here
So here is the situation it had happen 3 times this weak to me
When am using my phone (RR3 or facebook...) it freeze or lagged sometime,
That is natural to happen sometime
But in those 10 days when it lag it freeze for 30 sec/ 1 min
Then it restarts, but when it’s restarted the battery is gone, from 72% to 5% in, how is that possible ???? (pic 1)
And if I don’t put it in charge immediately it will just turn off after minutes!
_Still when I put it in charge and after like 20 min in charge I noticed that had already reached 80% just like if it had not started charging from 5% but from 60% !!! (pic 2)
_And sometime without any freeze or lag, it just turn off after showing that the battery is low 20%
So what is that?? A system / Hardware / or battery life problem??
I have this phone GS2 from 3 year now, and I’m using it like a geek
You could have a bad battery. When it drops to 5%, pull the battery before it fully boots. Wait 10 seconds, and put it back in, and then turn back on. Should help with the battery level indicator

Yes that's what I was just thinking about, considering that the life of the battery is normal if everything works fine. Well now I'm thinking that all what i need is to update from 4.0.2 to 4.2.2
So is there anyone like a best version of Android

Buddy, you haven't seen the real part of Android yet. Considering your battery issue, remove the battery and simply touch it in the middle. If the battery is swollen or bloated, then you need a new battery (3 years of usage make your battery weaker and subject to faster draining due to deformation of the cells inside the battery). In no doubt, Samsung's Touchwiz is THE main cause of lagging and drain, so here are my suggestions on ROMs that can fix your problem:
1- For 2.3 GB ROMs, go for CyanogenMod 7.2.0 with siyah kernel 2.6 (google the kernel name to find it or ask me for a link just in case)
2- For 4.0 ICS ROMs, go for CyanogenMod 9 stable on get.cm and go for Siyah 5.0.1 stable for more hardware customizing.
3- For 4.1 JB ROMs. well, you can grab CyanogenMod 10 or SlimBean 4.1 old release for the I9100 but I recommend skipping this version of Android (it's too boring)
4- For 4.2 JB ROMs, try Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 stable. if you love Touchwiz and want a stock experience, try Revolution Rom UX build 2 which is too close to an official 4.2 stock update. When it comes to me, SuperNexus 2.0 is the best 4.2.2 ROM I ever used. Flash Dorimanx 9.43 stable to get more out of your device just in case buddy.
5- For 4.3 JB ROMs, go for CyanogenMod 10.2, or SlimBean 4.3 build 2.2 stable (too awesome), or PAC-MAN ROM, or Carbon, Cyanfox...
6- For 4.4 KK ROMs, try out Cyanogenmod 11.0 nightlies or sanpshots, or go for OmniRom 4.4, or Cyanfox 4.4, or SlimKat, BeanStalk...
It's your choice, and I would recommend installing Dorimanx Kernel above the ROM you choose in order to configure your CPU clock speed and processor governers according to your kind of usage. Good luck :good:

Always happy to help fellow users
Well, the thing is CyanogenMod is no no doubt the best, but as for the 11.0 version, no full stable ROM is out there (at least not the tag), but sure-thing it is stable and getting better through every nightly. To get the daily nightlies which are somewhat experimental and buggy, visit get.cm/?device=i9100 and everything is there.
The nearest or at least more stable version of CyanogenMod 11 is the snapshot release (labeled "M") and it's there too. In case your Internet speed ain't too fast, download it through this torrent file I did (It's CyanogenMod 11 M4): http://burnbit.com/download/280529/cm_11_20140308_SNAPSHOT_M4_i9100_zip
Happy flashing :fingers-crossed:
