How hot can these things get? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Ok I just got a tpu case for my Verizon galaxy s3 and I noticed that the battery temps are quite high. Without a case I could hit 103.6 while charging, now just writing this I'm already at 102 and just a few minutes ago I hit 104.5 and I'm not even charging the phone. Is this normal? If so what are the limits because I could easily see hitting 110.

Are you guys having heat issues/problems?

So I decided to test my 3D with my Shift and EVO4G in terms of heat emission on all three devices. Here are the quick results. All with max brightness.
4G - Hovers around 88-93F through normal use
Shift - Hovers around 88-90F through normal use
3d - Hovers around 88-96F through normal use
Played HIMYM for 25 minutes each. Same clip, same 960x540 resolution.
4G - 101F
Shift - 98F
3D - 103F (101F if you avoid grasping the back)
Played Crystal Defenders for 30 minutes each
4G - 101F
Shift - 98F
3D - 111F
So the 3D is running a little hotter. Everything but the Crystal Defenders scares me, but I guess it is a game after all. Here's the weird thing though. I put all 3 on the charger and when I woke up
4G - 83F
Shift - 80F
3D - 113F
This is with the AC on full blast all night (its 98F outside). The 3D was molten hot. I looked at history and around 5AM an hour after I slept it was ~78F then at 8AM it spiked and maxed out at 114F while charging. This happened from 8AM to 2PM when I woke up.
I don't get what's wrong. Everything seems pretty comparable with past phones. I'm scared it ran at ~112+ for 6 hours. It might be even be dangerous for me as it might explode at those levels.
I took mine back today and got it exchange -- though, not easily. Mine had rebooted when it got hot last week and it was at the point where the game Majhong would make it so hot I couldn't answer a call.
They tried to tell me all smartphones get hot (not as hot as this did) and it might be the GPS radio which is normal (palying Majhong? Really?) and if I would reset it and leave it stock I would probably be OK (WHAT?!).
The guy even asked if I was rooted -- which I'm not -- because I use ADW laucher! LOL!
So, I got a little loud. I told them I expected them to at least pretend to take me seriously and trust that I am not stupid about my phone. They were busy, so they exchanged it.
I'm still testing my new one.
I just got a dose of this earlier today. My gf was shopping so I sat on a bench outside and played Plants vs. Zombies. About 15-20 minutes later she called and I picked up the phone and felt like I was burning my face holding it up to talk. SUPER HOT!
That was the first time not charging that it had gotten that hot. I'm not sure if it is every time or not.
Guys just to clarify, those seem all normal (beefier hardware and whatnot) except for while it's charging.
There's a thread over at Androidforums discussing that its charging at too high of a voltage and that's the problem with the charging. People tried the extended battery and the issue disappeared for some. My phone also burns when its charging, but normally stays below 103-105.
The rest are due to screen brightness and temperatures around you (especially since its blazing hot in a lot of the US right now).
If it's reaching 110F+ on anything aside for GPS nav related stuff and heavy duty/graphics gaming (crystal defenders burns my iPhone 4 as well) then you got a problem, otherwise its normal.
If you pull the battery, it states on the label that it's safe up to 60c. That's 140F. 114 is nothing. And I'd bet the electronic parts are safer up to an even higher temperature, seeing as my PC's video card can take up to 70-75c (160ish F) without any problems.
It's warm to you, obviously. Anything above body temperature is "Warm"
Big powerful phone + no room for a big heatsink = warm phone.
Heck, I actually think the back camera is designed to be a heatsink, which would be why it feels so warm most of the time.
Also, if it's new, it does run a bit hot while the battery is in it's "Breaking in" period.
Yes. Mainly at night when charged via wall charger. Seems to not happen while charging with usb to PC.
My 3d seems to top out at 105-110 F overclocked underload. My old Samsung Moment used to be 130-140 idle........... LOL. Toasty hands during hunting season!
As annoying as it may be, I don't think this SoC is at a danger zone until around 150
mine is regularly at 45-50 deg C i think thats topping out at 125 roughly?
I left mine in the car out in coachella.... And the temp got really high... It was.120 outside that day.. Was still able to use phone... But I put it in front of the AC with battery cover off while I used it

shouldn't the 45nm gate-length of the 3vo3d result in LESS heat than the 65nm Evo OG? and, I thought it was supposed to give better battery life - what gives?

**Updated** Extended 3500mAh From Ebay and TPU Case

Just received this battery from eBay and charged it up fully without any boot loop issues. I will keep testing and bring you all the results, but so far I have about 9hrs on the battery and I have download a few large files, played a few games such as Words with Friends, some talking and web browsing. I kept sync on as well and its down to about 75%. For $8.99 it may be worth it....
I will be doing a comparison on this battery pack, the Droidax Power Pack, and the Powerskin within the next day or so. I'm just waiting to receive the Powerskin which I should have on Thursday.
Battery Pack:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170659014417?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I also just ordered this to go with the battery pack...I'll let you know what it's like once I receive it.

I just got the case in the mail and it looks great. The cut outs are perfect and the fit is awesome. I paid like 8.99 for it. Between the case and the battery I spent about $18 and now I'm set. I now have the juice and protection I was accustomed to with my iphone4 and mophie case and for a fraction of the cost for a droidax or power skin case.
Does the back plate fit on perfect or is there a gap on the top right corner like the gtmax from amazon ?

I'm sure that these are the GT Max batteries. I ordered a GT Max battery and it looks exactly identical to the battery listed by the OP.
Thanks a lot, we look forward to the review & comparisons!
One big relief is that the case fits without any problems, because the GTMax (which also fits without any problems) has been sold out on Amazon for some time.
thank you. i just ordered one and will report back as soon as i get it. now to find a case that has an open back...
Update:
So far I'm very impressed with my 3500mAh extended battery. Its performing great. I'm charging it for the third time since I got it and have had no problems with boot loops or anything else. Its been lasting 2 full days with moderate to heavy usage.
Got pic yet?
just bought one, hopefully this one is good. i've seen some bad reviews of other 3500 batteries... in terms of performance but you seem to be holding it up well.
i'm suspecting that we should do a full-charge up when we receive them from a complete turned-off position in order to not cause any battery issues. just my 2 cents on that.
i'm excited to try out uNamed rom with extended battery. must be epic usage.

Nope it does not have the NFC in it...
I just got this same extended battery in the mail today from the same ebay seller as the OP.
First take:
- The case snaps on perfectly, just takes a little more force at the top almost to the point where I thought that no way it's gonna snap closed and that they sent me the wrong case, but it did, so no issues here.
- The finish on the battery door is very nice, matches the phone perfectly. Additional weight is nominal and the ergonomics of holding the phone are enhanced. Thinness, obviously, is sacrificed.
- Battery came with 40% charge. Charged it up and though I didn't track how long it took (maybe 2 hrs), it got up to 95% really quickly--perhaps even quicker than the stock battery which is a little alarming as bigger batteries take longer to charge, all other things held equal.

Just a quick note for all of you. If you look at the ebay listing, you will notice that the seller has a "Make Offer" option. I gave it a try and made an offer. He/she accepted it. Give it a try...."FYI: I am not going to post what they accepted my offer at."
Heavy usage day report
I had my first full day of usage yesterday and would like to report the stats. For starters, running stock rom, not rooted, 2 push email accounts, 50% brightness. I normally get about 3 hrs of display time on the stock battery and depending on whatever else I have going on, that could last me anywhere from 11-18 hrs in a given day. Yesterday was a great day to test because it was a day of truly heavy usage:
- 14 hr 20 min total battery life (from 100% to 5%)
- 3 hr 42 min display time on
- 2 hr 18 min phone calls
Well how does that compare to a 'heavy usage' day with the stock battery? I would probably get about ~11 hrs or so at most with the stock battery on a heavy usage day so I'm looking at perhaps a 3.5hr increase. But the most important metric is the screen time, which I usually max out at 3 hrs with the stock battery. So that is about a 45 min increase which is an additional 25% of screen time. I think I could have hit 4 and beyond easily if it wasn't for the 2+ hrs of phone calls, but it was a busy day!
Did I have higher, MUCH higher hopes for this battery? Yes, definitely. BUT it is too early to judge most likely, I hope to see some improvements with a few more charge cycles and hope to get the battery life that Rodger (igadgetgeek on youtube) was getting.
Bought one of these batteries. Shipping speed was actually decent.
Now onto the 3 F's
Fit / Form / Function
Fit: Battery fits just fine. Case fits very well....but there is a slight lip on the top left side.
Form: The feel of the phone is definitely different, but it's not bad.
Function: Definitely not 3500mAh, but for $9, I can't complain. Battery does seem to last much longer. I will post more on this when I've had more time with the battery.

Wow... that sucks.
I bought mine off Amazon for 12.99, and it was a US seller (I will have to look up the details).
I traveled for Thanksgiving and forgot my charger, but the phone lasted 3 days with 4.5 hours of display time. I always keep sync and data on, etc.
I was on UnNamed at the time.
Here is the seller I used:
http://www.amazon.com/GTMax-Capacit...5A84/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322755399&sr=8-1
extended battery results so far
Got my battery and case (from eBay, as in first post in this thread), no boot loop, back fits fine. On third day of battery logging, so far lifetime seems only slightly better than my stock battery. On unNamed ROM 1.3.0, using about 2.5-3% of battery per hour for light to moderate use. On stock battery was also using about 3% per hour [although those test were only for pretty light use]. So far extended battery appears to be less than twice the capacity... but given the price not to bad.
Has anyone found a post about this battery damaging a phone? I'm tempted to try it, but I'm a little nervous about it damaging my phone.

Battery gets HOT. Normal?

After a little smooth talking to a vzw rep, I was sent a rezound in place of my Tbolt.
I love the phone and its speed but I noticed that the battery gets very hot when the screen is on. Coming from a Tbolt I can say that my phone never got over 36 degrees even when tethering for hours. The rezound gets to 38-40 from 1 hour of continuous use (screen on) but no tethering. I have the 3.7 battery. The same thing happens on custom rooms and stock.
Now, I read in tons of places that this phone gets hot but very few provide numbers.
Is this normal or did I get a lemon?
It's normal'ish. Depends on how hot it gets. If you're losing skin or smell something burning it's too hot and you need to exchange it. If it's just warm then you're probably good.
There are a couple threads on this in the forum. Just do a search for battery and will find what you are looking for.
I see threads about really really hot batteries, but mine is generally quite cool. I never use 4G really, but I can tether 3G all day long and it never really gets warm. With screen on for awhile - like playing a game or browsing the net - it does get warm but nowhere near "hot" like my old Eris used to get...
I think the rule of thumb is if it gets above 120°F you need to start taking a look at what is going on.
Well, thanks everyone.
I haven't gotten to 120 yet but im easily at 113-115.
Do you guys think its the battery, meaning should i shell out the $ for a new one since i got the phone practically free from VZW, or could it be some kind of heat sink issue and i need a new phone?
Has anyone had to replace one for heat issues or did you just change the battery and everything was normal?
I exchanged my first one for heat. Probably just could have exchanged the battery in hindsight. Mine was getting in the 140 degree range, so hot, even on the charger i would lose about 3% battery/minute, until it cooled down. My new one is running about 120 with hard use, but I've been running an overclocked kernal, but underclocking to 1.4ghz, and that seems to have helped keep it under 110 now. I'm running the 1.7 kernal on joelz senseless ICS rom, set to 1.4max in the CM9 cpu controller built into the rom.
There are other threads where this has been discussed already, but if you have a defective battery Verizon will replace it. Likewise with a defective phone.

It's an HTC thing, cheap plastic, no property heat dispersion, the batteries get hot, wait till summer
One of the biggest turn offs of HTC phones are the cheap housings they offer...plastic???!?!? Um, no thanks I'll take the heat dispersion aluminum of a Motorola

You may have a bad phone. I just had to swap mine for a new one. My old phone worked great for the first month but then started getting hot and chewing through batteries. I did some tests comparing my phone to my wifes and I would go through the battery 3x faster than hers did. Her phone was always cool to the touch too. I did try her battery as well and that's how I was able to determine it had to be the phone and not the battery.

Suggestions for avoiding overheating

Has anyone noticed that the device runs hot? After about a week of use, I have noticed that this phone runs hotter than any other phone Ive had. I ditched a fully enclosed case and went with a "sleeve case" from ROCK, for these reasons. For the past two days, Ive been powering off my device, and charging it until full which usually allows enough time to cool off. Anyone else going through this or is it just me with a bum device?
I've been told that overheating is usual for dual core phones. Right now my phone averages at 35 degrees Celsius on average.
Had the HTC 1X before this. It got really hot on the bottom too.

[Q] Phone very hot after charging/ use

I got and activated my DNA yesterday. Phone got very hot after charging (from the wall outlet ). I activated the phone and played with it a little and left it alone. Now it seems cooler.
Anyone else experience heat issues with the phone ? I am trying to determine if I got a defective piece or if it is a characteristic of this phone. I had a htc phone before which did Not have this problem.
Also, is the phone's temp displayed under some setting options ?
Thanks,
cornfool
Same with me. It gets much hotter during wireless charging though.
Sent from my Droid DNA. 1080p never looked so sweet
I noticed this as well, it gets very warm when charging (even more so with wireless charging), and it gets warm with even light use.
the HTC DROID DNA when activated and signed into Google email it will be a lot of data to get itself restored. I'm sure you guys at it Facebook or Google Plus that right there with Poul a lot of data to pull in contacts and contact information plus have settings. I got mine yesterday any got extremely high alarming hi but over tonight is cool down it's not fully no more data which is somewhere around 3 gigabytes last night this seems to be doing fine now
Check the ratings of the wakk outlet...many HTCs have prob of over heating...go power master shows temperature...

Now that I used the phone whole day today. I still see an issue of phone heating up quite a bit when being used for longer than say 15 to 20 mins. Even playing the amira game that is included for about 10 mins causes the phone to heat up quite a bit.
I am thinking I have a defective piece
Mini review:
Overall very responsive and fast. Battery life was not too bad, my usage scenario seemed to hold up fine. Not as good as iphone ofcourse but I can live with this.
gps was fine, chrome is smooth. Problem areas for me so far are
1. Heating up of the phone'
2. low light pictures show a lot of noise compared to gs3 and iphone 5
Thanks

you should install a battery widget that shows temp to be sure. My rezound still gets up to 115 or so on 4g, but doesn't effect the performance of the phone.

Mine does the same thing, but it's more like after 5 minutes of constant use it starts to get very warm.
