Im sure this has been covered somewhere else but I jsut can't find it. So I apologize in advance.
I cant figure out how to to boot into recovery. (The stock recovery not cwm). This is before root or anything.
I tried holding volup+home+power and vol(up and down)+home+power and neither one worked. Does anyone know how to do this.
I am trying to do this because I need to flash cwm from recovery as I only have a linux computer at work (no odin). So if anyone know a not very risky way to root from linux that would work to.
Recovery is volume up + power button + home button...when you see the gs3 logo appear ..let it go....are you trying to flash cwm through stock 3e recovery? I don't think that's possible.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Yes I am. I downloaded the .img file for cwm. I then renamed it recovery.img and put it into update.zip with no compression and stored update.zip on the root of my internal sdcard.
As far as I understand if boot to recovery and choose "reinstall files" or something like that and it should install update.zip automatically. At least thats how I did it with my captivate. Can someone confirm if this will work with my s3?
Also I tried the volup+power+home until gs3 logo and that didnt work. Any other way?
Well I got it into recovery mode by releasing before the galaxy s logo. I tried to flash cwm but recovery said it wasn't signed and then aborted. Is there a way to find a signed cwm or to sign it?
Read "No trip flash counter root" in Stickies. It has all the steps, files and buttons.

MIUI 110281 Glitch-V12
When I use RomManager to go into recovery the phone uses ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.8 (orange color) . And I can't do anything with this. If I select anything I just get the little top-hat
When I use the reboot menu to go into recovery I get the Glitch Kernel - CWM-based Recovery v4.0.1.4. This one works great! I would like to only have the Glitch Recovery if possible.
When I use the 3 finger method I get CwM Voodoo LagFix Recovery v2.5.1.x I flashed this with Odin a while back. I get a host of errors regarding mount. To get any where I have to 'apply sdcard:update.zip' which of corse takes me to ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.8 and I have the same mount errors...but I am able to select menu items.
Questions:
Is it possible to have the phone only use the Glitch CwM recovery regardless of recovery method?
How can I get the latest CwM recovery to replace the older CwM Voodoo Lagfix?
Is this normal or do I need to take my phone to a psychiatric hospital?
This is completely normal. MTD roms use a different recovery and just leave the old orange one on there. It doesn't work at all, gives the errors you have seen. Nobody really knows how to make the 3-finger thing go into the right recovery. Just use rom manager or whatever to get the right one.
Got it. Glad I am not the only one! Thanks for the answer
From what I have been able to figure out the 3-finger recover is what ever you flash with ODIN.. I'm kinda new so I cant point you to the right files, but an ODIN flashable recovery is what you want

No. Not at all. He either needs to reboot to recovery with the reboot options aka holding the power button or using adb reboot recovery. If he flashes an mtd recovery with odin. His phone wont get passed recovery and have to start from scratch.

used oden to flash CWM. now i cant boot into android, it just keeps kicking me into CWM recovery.
anyone see this? any suggestions? would a wipe fix it?
did you flash a rom if so which one?
no ROMs, simply just tried flashing CWM via Odin
may i ask why 2.3.5?
what were you trying to do?
i am still able to get into Download mode to flash files via Odin, so i dont think all is lost. but, still just stuck in recovery. when i try to reboot it just takes me right back into recovery. i may have flashed an incorrect version of CWM which could be the cause of this problem. if that was the case, any ideas as to how i can get back into a proper boot?

I was trying to flash CWM so i could flash a custom ROM. Had this phone forever and was just looking to try out some ROMs out there.
As long as you odin cwm none of your os is really touched.
try the cwm 4 fixed for cm7. http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...2&d=1311907538
Now when you reboot your device the stock kernel will over right the cwm.
also make sure you put the odin file in the PDA section.
So basically flash the new cwm and try booting into normal that should get you back where you started from. 100% stock.
that link didnt work. tried searching for the thread without any luck
for some reason it truncated the link with a '...' and it thinks that is part of the hyperlink

thanks.. so i flashed this via odin. same problem. i start the phone. the samsung logo comes up. it disappears for a second. then it comes back up and kicks me into recovery.
weird right? any suggestions
ok then what is your endgame?
Now before you said you flashed just the CWM, may i ask why...if you did not intend to flash a rom? were you going to flash a Kernel or obtain root?
Perhaps you should try this
Download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278838
It is a custom kernel.
Now Flash CWM with odin
Put battery back in [dont touch power button yet]
Hold down BOTH volume and Power all at once * Dont let go until you see Samsung Logo.
[should still be plugged into pc via usb]
You will boot into CWM
using the volume up and down-Scroll down to Mounts and storage [select it by hitting the power button]
Then scroll to Mout USB storage
~now you should be able to see your SDCard as storage on your PC, put the Kernel some where on your SD Card~
[back on your phone Then Select Unmount
Scroll to ****Go bacK***** [select]
Scroll to install zip from sd card [select]
Select choose zip from sdcard
Navigate to where you have the zip
Select it
Scroll down to Yes-Flash........
Let the phone do its thing!
Good luck!
Your bootlooped...if you can get into cwm wipe all three and flash a rom thats compatible with the version of cwm you have installed. Or odin back to stock and start over...

Hey guys, I saw someone asking in an old thread I made if it was possible to go back to full stock ROM with stock recovery and 0 on the flash counter. Having done this myself last week, and having to grab info from multiple sources to accomplish it, I figured I would throw together a simple guide to help others (and myself in the future).
Things you will need to download:
Da_G's stock system, kernel and recovery. File can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
braway's latest Odin flashable clockwork recovery found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584576
braway's Odin flashable flash counter reset found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569206
and of course Odin found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=581913&d=1304094576
Ok, so now we have everything we need. This guide assumes you have drivers installed and have adb working. If not, google is your friend.
Fire up Odin and boot your phone into download mode. This is done by simultaneously holding the power button and volume down until the screen goes black, then release the power button while still holding volume down. When prompted press volume up to enter download mode.
Extract Da_G's pda-odin-att-stock.rar. We now have pda-odin-att-stock.tar.
Now in Odin, make sure the only thing checked is Auto Reboot. Click the PDA button and select pda-odin-att-stock.tar. Click the start button.
Once phone has rebooted, let the phone settle for a couple minutes then reboot it back into download mode. (volume down + power). Now click the PDA button again and this time select the Odin flashable clockwork recovery file (ex. cwm-touch-i717-120414.tar.md5). Click start.
Once the phone has rebooted and stabilized, drop the flash counter reset file onto your sd-card, then reboot into recovery by holding volume up + volume down + power. When screen goes black, release power button and wait for clockwork to show. Flash the flash counter reset, then reboot the phone.
Now for the hard (and risky, SO READ CARFULLY) part, we have to get stock recovery back on our phones without tripping the flash counter. (thanks again to braway)
Take the stock tar we flashed earlier (pda-odin-att-stock.tar) and extract that file. Take recovery.img and put it on your sd-card (I put it on the internal and external sd-card just to be sure). Reboot the phone into recovery (volume up+down+power). Go to mounts and storage, then mount the sd-card.
Issue the following adb command. I SUGGEST YOU COPY AND PASTE IT, IF YOU TYPE IT WRONG YOU WILL HARD BRICK YOUR PHONE.
Code:
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22
And that's it folks. We now have a fully stock ROM, kernel, and recovery with 0 on the flash counter. If anyone has any comments or a way to further simplify this process please comment below and I will incorporate it into the guide. Good luck and always read the instructions twice.
This guide was made possible by people much smarter than I am, namely braway and Da_G. If you want to properly thank these guys I suggest dropping a couple bucks in their donation boxes:

You don't need to ADB recovery, you can flash this from CWR and it will set your recovery back to stock without tripping your counter.

You don't need to use the adb command. Just flash stock via Odin again in download mode then flash the counter reset.

Their is an easier way to do this with Kies.
Someone posted a thread in here with the method, when I get home, I will post the process, as another way if you do not want to use ODIN.
Followed everything to the T. Was able to use ADB to send the command successfully at the end of the instructions. Every step worked and went flawlessly. Yet, still cannot update to ics via kies or OTA. Get the message "your device cannot update via kies". I guess there is just no way of bringing these back to out of the box brand new straight from the factory?
does this work for uk tmobile users
I think you left out the Radio.
When I did this, it still had UCLF6 Baseband.
After flashing stock rom via Odin, you need to Odin the stock Radio (baseband).
Then Odin CWM.
Then flash the counter reset (via CWM).
Then and only then will it be completely stock and update-ready for Kies.

All I did was flashed stock rom and CWM in Odin. I flashed the stock radio UCLA1 and the counter reset in CWM.
How do you flash the stock radio in Odin?

Either way is fine. As long as you get back to the stock radio. I found an Odin'able UCLA1 somewhere in the forums here.
I remember seeing a step by step on how to return to stock and resetting counter to 0 (zero)... It was going from a custom ROM via CWM and returning to stock via Odin with the recovery being last to be reflashed. Anyone know where this is. I've been browsing a whack of threads on this and can't find it.
Thanks in advance.

Noob needs help with last few steps to return to full stock
Following the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634087 to return my Galaxy Note i717 to full stock after it was bricked due to a botched root attempt. I've been able to get to step 5 Ok but I'm stuck at this point. Step 5 calls out for droping the flash counter reset file onto your sd-card. Not sure of the right way to go about this. I don't have an external SD card and can't seem to access internal SD card. Only option on phone is to format usb storage.
Just download the reset zip using the phone.
It goes to the browser internal storage anyway ...g

Thanks for your reply, I was able to place the zip file on the phone in the USB storage folder using samsung Kies. I've completed step five, now I've run into a problem with the final two steps. I've placed the recovery.img file onto the USB storage folder on the phone and deleted all other files in that folder. I've used USB storage because I don't have an SD card. When I go into recovery mode and go to mounts and storage and try to mount SD card I get an error. I saw the option to mount the USB storage so I tried that but to no avial. I just get the option to unmount the USB storage by going back the phone says. No ADB commands come up if that's right again I'm totally green here. I'm I forced here to have to get an SD card to continue? Need help again, all this stuff takes some getting use to.

Do you have Clockwork recovery installed on your phone? How are you trying to install these custom ROMs? Are you using ROM Manager?
You don't need root to flash a Rom...
Get Odin
Get an Odin flashable version of cwm
Flash said recovery with Odin
Boot into recovery by holding all the buttons till you feel a vibrant and letting off the power button, or the adb command: adb reboot recovery (or since you have root, download a terminal emulator from the market enter the command: reboot recovery, then Grant superuser permission.)
Then Flash Rom in cwm...
Old version of TWRP maybe?
To run the ROM Manager I needed root access. I tried to load the ROM from the ROM Manager and also straight from manual recovery mode.

Trying to install yours and i get
E:signature verification failed
That is stock recovery 3e...
Go read my post above...
THIS IS A LINK TO CWM TOUCH...JUST CLICK ANYWHERE HERE AND GET THE ODIN FLASHABLE VERSION
You do not need root to flash a Rom... Rom manager is not needed, and in fact just causes more problems than is worth
I don't think ROMmanager is even capable of flashing anything on the note. Someone correct me if I am wrong
You're correct...i wish that app would just go away and be erased from people's memories.
Actually i don't think Rom manager has worked on any Samsung device since eclair...as froyo was when they introduced 3e recovery, which requires signed update.zips, which only Samsung has the signature tool for.
So the update.zip Rom manager downloads to flash cwm with just gets stuck at "E: signature verification failed"
I'm still getting errors I'm going to search on youtube some more and see what could possibly be an issue. I go in with Up+home+power and erase everything I can in there and try to load from .zip and errors.
So I got it to work. I didn't really do anything differently except put it on my external SD card instead of my internal.
Today I rooted my phone, which was successful. I had the ME7 build. Then I tried to install Google Wallet using this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42029814) and I installed a custom recovery. Then I tried to install a custom recovery. I downloaded Goo manager (or whatever it's called) and did a menu click and installed "OpenRecovery Script" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292565)
And that is where I think I messed up. After I downloaded it, I selected 'reboot recovery' in Goo Manager and then I came to the Green android guy that says Download on it. So cool I figured I would just use Odin to put it back to stock. And for some reason it failed and now it says "Firmware upgrade encountered and issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
And that's where I'm stuck. My phone can't seem to connect with Kies and doesn't show up in the list when I go to Tools>Firmware Emergency Recovery.
So any help at all would be greatly appreciated! I assume I can't send it back because the phone's been rooted.
Thank you all again!
A little bit of reading goes a long way. There is a ton of posts and questions asked about this. You cant install a custom recovery on me7. There is only root. For some you can shut the phone all the way off. Use the button combo to boot into download mode and then decline and the phone should boot normally. Everytime you reboot youll have to do it that way so eventually your either going to have flash the stock recovery via odin, dont know where there is one posted but ive seen it on the forums before. Or youll have to use odin and reflash the stock me7 image. You cant flash the mdk image. The odin images and guides are located in the dev section.

I figured it out. I was being stupid and holding down the wrong keys for recovery. The keys are: Volume Down + Home + Power, and letting go of Power as soon as it vibrates. And it turns out I was trying to flash the wrong file... stupid me. But just make sure you'er flashing the right file in Odin and it should work.
