Install ROMs with different build numbers - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have a Galaxy S3 GT I9300 with build number XXALE8. I can't seem to find any ROMs with the same build number. So, my question is can I install ROMs with different build numbers, say Omega V9 with build number XXALF6? Will it brick my phone? I'm on the Siyah S3 1.3.8 kernel.
Thanks

You don't have to care about build numbers. Only about the device name being identical; you can only flash Rom's for the i9300 or i9300T, not for the US-versions.
Don''t forget to factory-reset when changing Rom. (It may work without, but it's highly recommended)
Descriptions on how to keep your data anyway are floating throughout XDA (HInt: they usually include Titanium Backup and SMS Backup+)

ROM from different device with same build number?
My question is just the opposite: I can't find ROM.zip for my phone model (MT6575 GT One Ex), however I found ROM.zip from another different device with identical build number as mine: ALPS.ICS.MP.V2.2 - may I use it for flashing?

You do not have a Samsung SGS3 I9300 phone its pointless posting here or flashing firmware for I9300.
Find a MT6575 GT One Ex forum via Google .

The question is about Samsung too (any device)
Dear JJEgan - my point was a very general question (which I googled and was directed here) - whether two ROMs with the same build number are interchangeable or not? (E.g. if my phone's original ROM has crashed, could I restore it with a ROM with the same build number, although from another device model?)
P.S. This forum hyperlink you pointed to - was actually created by me.

[Q] Holistic understanding of phone.

Hi XDA Devs & Members,
I'm a new member, and I've spent hours scouring over the forum to my answers but I'm still slightly confused.
I'm currently using Galaxy SII, hence the post in this forum under Q&A
Firmware:
Android: 2.3.4
Baseband: XXKH3
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected]#2
Build number: Gingerbread.XXKH3
I originally wanted to debrand the vodafail branding, and flashed the firmware of XXKH3 which is the "Frankenstein version" according to here
Then I messed up my sms by pressing the 'update' button in *#*#4636#*#* phone information menu which is another story, but I fixed that rooting the phone using Odin and SuperOneClick.
So basically, what I want now is to go back to basic, don't use one of those frankenstein firmwares, but a stock one, stay as close to stock as possible, root the phone, I know CF-Root has a made a post on this, but now that I've already rooted my phone using Odin, I don't know how to go back.
Also, I've been searching, but I haven't been able to find a comprehensive guide/information regarding how to understand the phone. I understand the individual parts, i.e. what rooting does, what roms are, what are firmwares, but I'm not able to put them together to give me a holistic understanding of the phone. Is there something I can read to understand this?
Thanks in advance. This is a great forum!

I have another quick question, does factory reset reverts the phone back to original settings with the folders and everything else the same? I may be paranoid, I executed busybox installer multiple times and the folders look like a mess when I connect the USB to share files. All the additional folders that came with rooting and TitaniumBackup and other apps made the entire phone look like a mess. Is it worth doing a factory reset?
Factory resets reverts to the last firmware installed wiping phone and user apps . Out of the box setup then required .

How to flash Chinese I9100G ??

Hi,
I am sorry for the newbie question.
I just bought a Galaxy S2 GT-9100G here in China.
Only after buying did I realise it is a 'G' model. damn.
anyway - I would like to 'reformat' the device, and place an Israeli ROM on it.
I hope I am using the correct terms.
The reason for this - is that the chinese version comes without Android Market,
and other stuff (and the Israeli one does).
1. Do I need to root the device first before I can change the ROM ?
2. If so - I have seen in this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18099806
that flashing the kernel is the only way to root the device.
I have flashed my brother's Galaxy S2 (I9100) a month ago, using the steps shown here:
http://samsunggalaxys2review.org/root-your-samsung-galaxy-s2-heres-how/
(used OdinDownloader and SuperOneClick). Do I do the same with this device ?
Which file do I supply to Odin ??
3. Is there anyway to flash the Israeli ROM on this device ?
or it won't work, cause Israeli ROM is only for I9100 and my device is I9100G ?
If not - what can I do in order to flash a new ROM with built-in Android Market ?
Thanks to everyone who can help !!!
If u flash the new rom to your phone, it no need to root!
I own a I9100T, I flash it to I9100, it work fine, so I think u can flash it to an Israeli ROM.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192575
In general, be careful about flashing the China phones. It seems they went out of their way to make sure those phones comply with China's government restrictions.
i9100G got KH4 and KI1 rom, u need to donload insecure kernel to root them

Where can I get the KH4 and KI1 insecure kernels ?

So, ghmail, are you saying you have managed to do so yourself ?
Change the ROM on an I9100G to any ROM you want ?
On the topic - how can I backup everything on my device ?
I mean - the bootloader, the ROM and all the other stuff I might mess up if I brick my phone ...
Please remember..u cant flash any I9100 custom rom because its diff between I9100 and I9100G..If u flash it the phone will be semi bricked and u need to flash back to the ori rom of I9100G KH4 or KI1..
China GT-19100G-ZCLC2
Hi People, I am a total novice here. I have been reading your forms for few weeks now, since i Bought this SGS II-I9100G in China [Big Mistake ?? :-( ]
This is my phone :
Model - GT-19100G
Android - V 2.3.6
Baseband - 19100GZCLC2
Kernel - 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Firmware : PDA:LC2 / Phone:LC2 / CSC:LC2 (CHN)
I read thro creezalird pdf user guide and as guessed DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT' dint work with both methods on my phone.
I just want to root the phone so I can install few useful apps, no fancy stuff like flasing or custom rom etc. As you know even google play is blocked. Can someone point me to right link/guide me to do it.
I did read many articles (too many of your forum's) and probably why Im now totally confused. Reason is I do not see anything pointing to ZCLC2. Maybe I am not looking hard enough.
I got it done using superatom's kernel. Now all sw works on chinese phone.

[Q] GT-i900G root guide?

Hi there (topic should say GT-i9100G)
Been searching for days to find a way to root my GT-i9100G model. I found plenty for previous builds of my kernel but nothing for this current one.
So I'm at the end of my wits and for the first time in years I'm turning to creating a thread on a forum, getting ready for the flame.
kernel: 2.6.35.7 DELL165 dpi @ # 2
Android version: 2.3.6
Build number is: GINGERBREAD.XXLA1
Baseband version: I9100GXXKL4
I had a i900 from work but after it broke my work phone was replaced with this model and I'm sick of not being able to run ICS on it.
Anyways, wanna get CWM on it, but I'm very green at the whole custom ROM scene, only thing I ever rooted was my 10.1 tab with Odin to flash AOKP's builds :\
Anyways, if anyone has any tip, don't be shy.

You DID mean GT-i9100G, right?
Need to know more, anyways. Build number?
Use super one click
Yes of course, silly me, GT-i9100G is my phone.
Build number is: GINGERBREAD.XXLA1
Baseband version: I9100GXXKL4
I've read others talk about super one click, the reports were very mixed and I think this build will not work, or am I wrong?

I believe SuperOneClick requires an insecure kernel to be flashed to your phone first before using it, right? You just have to make sure the insecure kernel is for the I9100G, and not the I9100. And if you cannot find an exact match for your kernel version for an insecure kernel, you will need a copy of your secure kernel to flash back when you're done rooting.
I'm afraid I don't know where to get these things for an I9100G, however, so you're on your own to look for them. (unless someone who knows this information sees this post and is kind enough to post it to you)
EDIT to add: that said, I've heard of a few custom kernels for the I9100G that, when flashed, will root your phone for you. I don't remember what they are though, you'll have to search for them.
EDIT 2: Found one (superatmos) that has a version compatible with your build.

JR003C.I9300XXDLJ1
pls send a thread here and downloadable tnx,,,,,
You don't need to change rom to root and there are plenty how too's to do it.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
install exynos abuse and click root
that all
Sigh...Okay here's a quick education.
Nearly every rom you see on here under the GT-I9300 section should work on your phone, the GT-I9300 is the important bit - it is your phone model number.
You will often hear the baseband part, XXDLID, referred to, I believe, as the modem. This is not the stock rom bit.
Search what a kernel is, but don't bother unless you really know what you intend to do by changing it. There are many types of kernel, Perseus, Siyah, Franco to name a few.
The final bit, XXDLJ1, is essentially telling you which stock rom you are on. CyanogenMod, UltimaROM, WanamLite, Supernexus, Omega etc. these roms will all work. It just depends on what you would like to get from a rom..
Just search for how to root for noobs on the forum, or just look in the sticky roll-up thread. There is a lot there. I suggest you read them all.
Start with these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911726
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674286

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33997308
I suggest you read up a bit more before you attempt anything because you appear a bit clueless.
Seriously. Don't mess around unless you know what you're doing.

[Q] What build should i choose? (Samsung Galaxy S3 Unified Toolkit)

Just as the title says.. I'm wondering what build I should choose from the list when using the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit V7.0.0. My build number for my S3 is JZO54K.I9300XXEMG4 (running Android 4.1.2). There's an alternative for JZO54K.ELLA (Android 4.1.2), should I pick that one instead since it's the closest one option?
I'm open to all suggestions since I really want to root + flash my device tonight (the first time I'm rooting a device).
Thanks in advance,
RedRetro
Preference would be for TWRP or Philz Recovery .
Suggest you read the faqs and guides before flashing that we the risk of a brick or no network or no booting is reduced .
Basics read first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125
Critical you read the first two posts .
Thanks, JJEgan
