Help with Softbrick SGH-I747 Model. - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Hi everyone,
New user here unable to find the answers via search, I've been sifting through thread back n forth for some time, so hoping someone can give me a little assistance.
I have a Bell(SGH-I747) Model S III, and I've seemed to Soft-Brick the phone.
I'm unable to get it to detect to the PC via USB.
This occurred while removing the cable from the phone, while the Reset bar was blue in Odin(Progress bar was completely green).
When I perform the Hold Home + Down then press Power for 2 seconds, I'll get a display for a moment saying Samsung.
The same occurs when I do the Hold Home + Up then press Power for 5 seconds.(although some times it will just vibrate while I do this)
I've removed the battery, and attempted it again then upon plugging it into the USB cable I got a flash of a battery picture.(But still no driver detection).
If anyone can help out I would be very grateful.

First off you hold home + up then power until Samsung screen appears then you release POWER ONLY, that should get you to recovery, the same applies for download mode, dont release home or volume until one of these modes come up, is your phone booting up fine but not connecting to pc? Or what you didn't explain too well, if thats all its doing then all you would have to do is download your drivers on pc, Kies will do this, explain a little better please

Thrasher,
I just removed the battery, held down home + up then power for 5 seconds. I than received a blink of the recovery screen(it says in blue text top left reading device then goes blank)
When I hold home + down then power for 2 seconds. It just blinks the Samsung screen.
I originally installed the drivers using SGS3 International Tool.
Also what is Kies?

Whoa whoa thats where you messed up you shouldn't be trying to root via the International tool, because you DON'T have the international version. If you can get into download mode which is the same way of recovery except the down volume button then id suggest doing the no trip root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426, nothing for the international works with our phones, NOTHING. Go there and follow instructions see if you can get it, read thoroughly and make sure you download the bell version only

So remove the previous drivers, and software I've installed.
Then re-attempt using the method you have suggested?
Thank you for your help, I'll post back and let you know how everything pans out.

My link didnt seem to work but you can find that thread under att android development in the stickies, and i updated my last post make sure to read it again

If you can get into download mode and you use odin to flash the right firmware and all for your phone. Yes absolutely
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

Sorry I have no solution for you, but I had similar (or worse) result after trying install kernel, not knowing that there is a different section on the forum for non-international phones...first attempt got me to where you are, except I could get into download mode, then after second attempt flashing something else, I managed completely brick the phone, to the point that it would not display anything, no vibration, no led light, totally dead.
Hopefully it was still under 30 days warranty.
P.S. wish we had some kind of color marked topics for each carrier, like ATT would be blue, Verizon red, Sprint - yellow (orange), etc...

I did the same thing last night and freaked out, but I found a solution here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727171
If you can't get into download mode, remove your sd card, that's what I had to do.
Note: the link is for sprint phones only, but its basically the same fix with a different file.

Wow each carrier thread is under big bold letters its really hard to not be able to tell a difference

I was referring to general and q&a sections.

Okay so I've managed to resolve the issue by taken the matter in a little into my own hands, as well as with the assistence of you friendly folk here at XDA : ).
First - Removed the previous device drivers and the original rooting software I had installed.
Second - Removed the battery out of the device for several minutes, and the usb cable from the PC
Third - I downloaded/installed KIES & Odin v3.07 & stock firmware listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Fourth - Place the device in download mode, by holding the home key and down on the volume, then by pressing the power button.
Fifth - Run KIES and connect the device through the USB Cable(KEIS should install the correct drivers this way)
Sixth - Run Odin leave pre-selected Auto-Reboot & F.Reset Time, Check off PDA and Open Stock Rom
Lastly - Let Odin do it's thing & dance around your room while you achieve success
:highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive:

Thats exactly what i wanted you to do, congrats! Now only flash stuff for your device which would all be in the att development forum since they are basically the same phone, youll just have to manually put in bell apns

Need help getting Vibrant from ICS to factory stock.

I'm sure this has been asked before and I apologize for asking again if so. (I tried to search but couldn't find the files I need.)
I need to get my Vibrant that is on ICS back to 100% factory.
I know I have to repartition to go back but I can't find the factory Odin and PIT file I need.
Thank you all in advance.

Awesome! Thanks.
New problem. (Small but important.)
I am not able to get into Odin download mode. I have all my drivers installed and when I connect the phone the battery icon pops up but if I do the three button method the screen goes black like it's supposed to be it just reboots and either goes back to the battery or powers on. (I am on ICS Passion V12 if that helps any.)
Any advice? I'm stuck without linking with Odin.

Cut the phone off, pull the battery out and put it back in. Hold volume up and volume down keys at the same time(do not hold power button) and plug the usb cable in. If you have gingerbread boot loaders then it's really simple, cut the phone off and hold volume up key only then press the power button.

It appears I can't catch a break!:crying:
I got the phone restored to 2.1 and it worked flawlessly.
I plugged it up to my pc to upgrade to 2.2 through Kies. I had charged to 100%, it upgraded successfully and said the device would reboot. It never did.
It appears Kies and 2.2 have hard bricked the phone. I don't get a charging indicator and can't get into recovery or download. The phone is completely unresponsive.
I am really starting to hate Samsung.
Yea - there should be a big warning everywhere not to use kies.
If you connect the phone to the pc does it show up in Odin? If so flash away.
Try the battery method again. Also instead of going to 2.1 you may want to try the Froyo KB5 2.2 Heimdall 1-click:

download:
http://www.filereactor.com/zcl1dy7zlxbh/UVKB5_Stock_Heimdall-One-Click.jar.html
I haven't used Odin to get the 2.2 stock since the 1-Click

Doesn't show in odin cause I can't get into download mode. :-( I'm afraid it's a hard brick as I get no response at all no matter what I try.
have you tried
1. unplugging the phone
2. pulling the battery
3. plugging it into the computer
4. place the battery back in
5. holding volume up + volume down + power
this is how i got to download mode when my phone wasn't responding
I know you said you tried everything i just want to make sure.

Just tried it again. No luck. I guess the phone is trash thanks to Samsung. :-/
Hey there. My phone was unresponsive as well, would not go into download mode, even tried the battery thing..
This link, One-Click Unbrick
Try that and see if it works for you, make SURE you have the latest Java.
My phone wasn't completely black, I had the Phone to PC error, but I could NOT get it to get into download or even see that something was plugged in. It was unresponsive to everything. I tried this program and BAM, I'm back into bootlooping. Shut my phone off, turned on in bootloader and reinstalled everything.
You MAY have to reinstall somethings so you might have to go back to square one, however at least you'll have a working phone.
Kies also bricked my first Galaxy.
Hopefully the One-Click unbrick will work for you! I wish you good luck!

Samsung may replace the phone for you, call and tell them it bricked while using kies. For future reference do NOT use kies ever again, it is known to brick devices. If your phone is getting no power at all, then calling Samsung is your only choice and hope they replace it for you. I wish I would have known you were planning to use kies, definitely would have warned you not to. You can look into buying a usb jig for your phone, they are under $5 and maybe could help. You can also make them yourself for around 1 dollar.

The phone is out of warranty so I'm sure if they'd replace it or charge me to fix it.
The jig thread said it didn't work if you are completely unresponsive.
I'd used Kies on my Wife's Captivate and had no problems so I didn't know it would wonk up my sons Vibrant.
I'll try out the 1 click method and update.
Thanks again for the advice. (My son is using his old Nokia Nuron again so he at least has a phone in the interim.)

Yea you could be right about the warranty issue but it was Samsung's program that screwed up your phone. If you haven't called them already, I would call and explain that you would still have a working phone if it wasn't for kies bricking your device. After all, Samsung recommends us to upgrade through kies even tho it has caused more damage than good from my experience. It's worth a try, you never know.

Just so you know, we recently had another member that hard bricked his phone using kies and was also out of warranty with T-Mobile. He called Samsung and explained THEIR program/software rendered his phone useless. He got a brand new vibrant out of the deal.

Ics update problems

Im trying to upgrade my samsung galaxy s2 (SGH-I777). I connect my phone using the Samsung Kies program. The installation goes all the way to the part where my phones screen has the android and it says "firmware upgrade i process..do not disconnect from target." it stays at 0% then i get the error saying "pc failed to recognise the mobile phone". Ive re installed drivers, used different cable used different port and still get the same error. please help.
Sounds like the part of the driver that recognizes download mode isn't installed at all or correctly. What I would do is close KIES, restart both phone and computer. now put the phone in download mode by holding vol up & vol down while plugging in usb cable. when you get warning screen press vol up to get to download mode. let the computer install the driver (don't open KIES yet)
after all of it is done, restart again and start from beginning - open KIES, connect phone, update to LE5
It's not all it's cracked up to be. I did it just out of curiousity but soon left it for custom roms again.

two questions:
1. are you holding the buttons down until you see something on the screen? hold both buttons down, insert usb cable (other end plugged into computer), hold buttons until you see text on the screen, then release.
2. no offense, but you do have the i777, right? so many people come here to the i777 forum but actually have the i727 Skyrocket, or something else.

I would try a custom ROM for sure. I just came from an iPhone 4 and loading AOKP on my i777 was a breeze. I never messed with whatever was on it before so I wouldnt know. Im not sure if there is a one click stock ROM you could flash with odin. Does odin even recognize your phone? If not full uninstall of kies and reinstall and be sure that you have the samsung drivers installed, which you said you have done time and again.
But really though, check out the Task and Ktoonsez AOKP rom, if you dont like there are several to choose from. and then there is this galaxys2root.com website. That has a whole bunch of youtube ROM reviews. Im still learning, but willing to help out a fellow noob. Good luck and update us on whats happening

@ pichienyfl - What OS do you have on your computer? Windows XP/Vista/7? Mac OS? Linux?
I agreed with Phalanx7621 that it is not your phone (at this point). Especially if you have Windows 7, you will have to install the right driver for it. Or it will not work correctly.

[Q] I777 not booting after root then wipe

Mistakenly posted this over in the I9100 forum first.
I tried to root an S2 with ODIN and siyah. Afterwards it worked but I noticed that the splash screen showed I9100 (I used the I777 file). Anyway, I later realized that the guy i bought it from had left stuff on it (he reset without wiping). I decided to wipe it and now it won't go past the splash screen and won't go into download mode that I can tell.
I was told in the other forum that I will most likely require a jig to get it to work. Considering I can't even root the thing right, I will probably buy one instead of making one. Does it matter what model of S2 it is on the jig? I see some that say I9100 but not I777. I just want to make sure if i order one I get the right thing.

The sticky I am looking at doesn't coincide with what you are saying, which may be why I am confused. The guide says:
Boot into download mode by this method:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.

Which is not giving me a dang thing. Doing your method or any other method only gives me the splash screen then black again.

Sorry. Volume up down and power is for recovery. Volume up down and plug in usb is download. The only way this would have changed on your device is if you flashed primary or secondary bootloader from the i9100
But based on what you said before is that you were following the i9100 method to get into the different recovery and download mode, since the i777 doesn't have a physical home button like the i9100

Well, I followed a video from galaxys2rootdotcom that said it was for I777 and the file I used said I777 but after doing it, the splash screen said I9100. If I hold down the powerbutton and or other buttons while it is not plugged in, I get the splash screen with the exclamation then it goes off. If I try it while it is plugged in, I get a grey battery icon. Sounds like best bet is a jig?

Red - that was my initial thought but it was fine before I did the wipe and I did try charging it some. Also, when I did the wipe, it was plugged in, which makes it odd that it would die. I'll certainly give it a try.
One thing I noticed at home that I had not seen here (it was too bright to notice) was that it does indeed seem to be stuck in a loop. The screen flashes a little brighter every few seconds before going dim again. At this point, it doesn't seem that I have much option but to wait to try to use the jig to get it in download more *fingers crossed*, and then swear to never get advice from rooting from anywhere but here.
I got my jig in and immediately went into download mode, which was a relief. I went to try to reset to stock using the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659 . Everything okay but when it comes up to the welcome screen and try to click on the android to start, i just keep getting errors about google services framework stopping.

I just purchased a used Samsung Galaxy Note 1 - Model SHG-i717R (Rogers - Canada)only a few hours ago. The phone was owned by a kid, who advertised it as rooted and unlocked. I only really needed the unlocked part as I'm a Telus customer! Put my SIM in at it worked. Got home, boyfriend looked at it and the counter was already at 5 and the binary read "custom". The model number in the phone info read something like N7005 (if that makes any sense - it didn't match the model # on the back of the phone i717). The boyfriend decided he was going to install the original rom on it which he downloaded from sammobile, specifically for Rogers - Canada. He attempted the update in Odin, and it failed (twice). After it failed the screen stated the following:
ODIN MODE
Product Name: SGH-i717R
Custom Binary Download: YES(5 counts)
Current Binary: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
FIRMWARE UPGRADE ENCOUNTERED AN ISSUE. PLEASE SELECT RECOVERY MODE IN KIES & TRY AGAIN.
Tried Kies, but it wouldn't recognize the phone.
He attempted to get the phone back into download mode with no luck.
When you pull the battery and put it back in and press the power button it does vibrate - but then shows that above mentioned screen. When i connect the phone via USB to the computer - it makes the connected noise and looks for the drivers but can't find them.
So, question is - am I bricked (soft or hard)? And, if not/so - is there a way to fix this?!
Thanks in advance! It's really going to suck if I just wasted all the money!
Push and hold volume down, and power for 15 seconds.
If DL mode is present, the device will vibrate 3 times at 5 second intervals.
Release both buttons after the third vibration, and you should be in DL mode.
Then push a factory image via Odin.
If no DL mode happened ....JTAG ...g
Edit : if you get an image pushed successfully, you must get the CWM recovery pushed also, Then wipe all data then caches, and factory reset to clear the device of the garbage....g

Uninstall kies and all drivers.
Reboot.
Reinstall everything.
Reboot.
Swap usb ports on pc.
Always right click odin and run as admin.
You should be able to flash just a custom recovery image with Odin, then flash a custom rom zip in recovery.
N7005 is the version from Singapore with compatible hardware to the I717 variants.
Flash counter doesn't matter until you're returning it for warranty...which being a second-hand owner doesn't apply to you at all.... I would have left well enough alone of it worked.. our tried another custom Rom. Why he wanted you to have the stock rom (eww) is beyond me.
My friend has the problem

I dont know what JTAG and g mean.... Did I mention I was a noob?!
Jtag is a way of recovering a truly bricked phone.
"....g" is just how he ends every. single. post.
As a signature. G as in greg, his name.

Haha, ok. So what is the process of JTAG?
I held the volume down button and power button... the custom os warning comes up - i still keep holding. The phone vibrates 3 times.. I let go it then vibrates a 4th time while not being pressed and gives me the same screen!
JTAG is done by a professional, it requires both special tools and the know how. Not to be done by the common user.
I don't think it's too the point of needing jtag, there is still life. A brick is when the phone exhibits all the electronic properties of that red baked clay building material it's named after. Not. A. Damn. Thing.
Hold all three buttons till you feel those vibrates, then let off the power while still holding the volumes. Hopefully you'll get sick recovery where you can try a factory reset.
Or hook up to pc and then manually push a custom recovery image with adb.

It's still doing the exact same thing - no matter which combination of buttons I try. It's also giving a 4 vibration after I have let go. It did show the Samsung logo for a second before giving me that screen again though.
Have you done the first steps I mentioned?
Uninstall everything phone related.
Reboot.
Reinstall.
Reboot, swap usb ports on computer.
Then try kies emergency firmware upgrade from that screen you're getting.

Did one better - tried on a computer that has never had anything phone related installed. Kies doesn't recognize the phone.

This person is in Canada, I dunno anywhere other than mobiletechvideos to send it to.. and that's an international shipment. Trying to save some money... Still a few things to try Mr. Pessimist.
BUT it's going to be more advanced.
You're going to have to install the android sdk, and see if adb sees the phone at any point in the process. If it does, you can then manually push a recovery to the phone and then flash a rom.zip from there.
Like I said, advanced and it'll take potentially all day to research and get set up... but jtag itself is $40 us.. not to mention shipping.
The above mentioned process is completely free...

Wow. I'm sure we have no idea how to do that! And, which person is in Canada?
You are.
Jtag guy is in Texas...
Mobiletechvideos.com
If you don't want to put on the effort and learn...there you go.

Where is the best place to find the steps to attempt this? I dont want to just use random google searches. Any reccommendations?
This site is the best place ....
Search here for SDK and related topics.
It's not going to be a 1 hour deal....as the device is jacked up pretty good.
It does not fit the total definition of hard brick, but if manipulated attempts to get into DL mode have failed, and Kies can't see the device, it's basically the same outcome.
Studacris is attempting to get you studied up on the android SDK, which simply means the tools used to access the device at the development level.
The obvious outcome, would be employing the SDK, and pushing files manually to the device via the android debug bridge, or ADB for short.
There is still device activity, thus we feel that it might be receptive to the attempt.
But as mentioned, it will take some steep learning by you, and some serious patients and attention to detail.
If done incorrectly, you'll make it worse.
So there are your options....
Either send it off for JTAG repair, or install a working SDK environment onto your PC and learn the grass roots of android.
The third option ....find the guy that sold you a brick, and beat him with it ...
(Third option not sanctioned here )....g

That 3rd option would be to break up with the dude who borked it.. hahaha
Whoever sold it...sold it in working condition.
Sorry OP ...
I'm unable to help you further ...
I've been asked to leave ..
But before I go ....I'd like to point out that a device without drivers, and no connection capability, "IS" a brick.
And would require the same repair as a brick.
Mrhaley ....please see my post before this one, and understand that I do have a genuine interest in helping this user.
Many suggestions and options there ...and I would be very interested in hearing your solution for a device exhibiting the problems listed above .....g

[Q] Note i717 Hard reset

Hello, I bought a Galaxy note I717D from a pawn shop yesterday and it was locked by the previous owner. I am trying to do a factory wipe but when i power on holding the volume down button it goes to odin mode screen and sits there, ( I gave up waiting after an hour )
I can power it down and reboot normally. since the phone is locked I can't get into it to see if has been rooted or even check usb debugging mode to try rooting it.
can anybody point me towards a solution to make this useable.
Google

I do believe if you can get into download mode that you can use kies to do an emergency firmware restore that should wipe the entire phone. I have not had to do this so I can't say for certain, but I think I remember seeing a thread with a similar issue around here before.

Yes I tried google first, all the direction I found said to use the volume down button or volume up or both and I tried all three. But I found the answer now, it turns out the volume up button is intermittent and have it working now
