I have the 2.1 ROM installed, and when the phone is in my pocket (or the light sensor is covered up), the phone rings at the loudest volume. This is VERY annoying as it scares me and is embarrassing when I am around people. I'm using the "old phone" ringtone.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I have found no toggle anywhere!
Thanks for any help.
Did you try disabling the "Quiet ring on pickup" setting?
I have it currently disabled- I re-enabled it and it still rings UBER loud. I also just flashed to another 2.1 ROM and it is still doing it. I switched ringtones to "Standard 4" amongst others, and they all ring VERY loud. It starts off at the desired volume, but increases significantly until the 3rd ring where it is max volume. If the phone is just sitting on my desk, it rings at the desired volume constantly, but if i cover up the light sensor (any time during the ringing) it quickly goes to the loudest volume. This is getting to be a HUGE problem as this is my work phone and I can't miss calls by not feeling it vibrate, but can't have it ringing at loud volumes in the office!
^ I have the exact same problem! No matter what I have the ring volume set at, it starts out quiet but blasts to full volume. Scares the crap out of me every time!!
I'm at my wits end, this is really annoying! Does anyone know how to resolve this??

Which 2.1 ROM are you using? I'm using the original "leaked" one that doesn't allow rooting and am having the same issue.
I was using the first leaked ROM, and I thought it might be the ROM, so I switched to the "HTC 2.1 Release Candidate (AKA OTA) Leak Rom." Same deal with that one. I might try another one, just in hopes of solving this problem!
Same issue here with the 2.1 HTC OTA one.
I am having this problem too and it is really annoying.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the proximity sensor on the phone. However, I don't see a way to disable the volume increase based on that. Perhaps its tied into rosie, since the proximity sensor seems exclusive to HTC.
Saw in another forum that it is a bug in 2.1. I tried the diasble quiet on pickup and that didn't work. Now using Smart Volume Free from the market and that locks in the volume I want. I still was really looking forward to the volume decreasing when I picked it up, not sure if this will help get around it but only solution was Smart Volume for me.
I tried this program, praying that it would work, but the "locked" ring volume is lagged. The phone rings at the loudest ring volume a few times before the "locked" volume takes effect. I guess it's better than full volume the entire time.
bump!! Anyone have a fix for this??
I was just thinking about looking for this thread again and see if anyone found a solution. I am rooted 2.1 and still have this problem. Is there a program or hack to fix this? I just keep my phone on vibrate most of the time because of this.
I downloaded some "Smart Volume" app or something that "locks" the volume, however, it takes a few seconds to kick in after the phone starts ringing. It will ring SUPER loud for 1 or 2 rings then quiet down when the app limits it.
I've resorted to carrying my phone in my pocket when only absolutely necessary and also answering or silencing it VERY quickly once it starts ringing.
SUCCESS! I installed the latest leak (v3) and the issue went away!!!!

I have a rooted, Liberted HTC Aria. I can set the volume all the way down to vibrate via the rocker, place it on the table, call it from another phone, and the phone will ring.
When I re-check the volume level it is set to the quietest ring, not vibrate.
I have repeated this over and over as I though I was just accidentally hitting the rocker while it was holstered, but that's not the case.
I've tried downloading volume lock. I set the phone to vibrate and test volume lock to see if it works.
It does, I get a message to confirm new volume level, if i don't it stays on vibrate, as indicated by the vibrate icon.
Then you call the phone... The phone rings and the volume is now set to the quietest ring, not vibrate.
Any ideas, this is a huge inconvenience at work?
Thanks.
Don't know how old this thread is, but I will tell you, you are not going crazy.
I have a vibrant that is rooted and custom rom loaded.
I've had the custom rom for 3-4 months now.
I reloaded some crappy rom, and after I did that, no matter what rom i put on it, I get this ringer problem.
So, no, it's really a problem, you're not imaging it.
So far I can only think that the default build.prop has been funked with.
Or, one of the programs that you installed is messing with it.
I think that it more likely is #1 because on fresh install the phone is fine. But upon reloading all my apps (apps only, no data/ system data), the damn phone will funk up and do the ring crap again.
So, try Odin - to stock and from there, flash a brand new rom and restore one by one.
Sorry mate, that's what I've found, it sucks. I hope you found a solution for this. Like I said, I have a Vibrant, so I don't browse the "Aria" forum at all. I found this thread on GOOGLE.
If you find out anything, PLZ PLZ PLZ, - contact me.

Hi guys,
anyone else having problems with adjusting the call volume (while in a call) ?
The screen obviously turns black while in a call, and then, the volume buttons don't work for me...
I have to move the phone from my ear, screen turns on, adjust volume.
This drives me nuts !
Any help is much appreciated.
Yep just noticed this today when I was on a call. Seems strange that you can't do that but you can change the volume of music when the screen is locked?
same thing here. hope they fix it

Correct, it does work for music, I have noticed that as well...
What's up with that ?! Isn't it like the very first thing you should check before releasing a phone to the market ?? Even if it's software related (and it is, in this case) at least the Vendors should test this.
And, I know what I am talking about
I guess that with all the technology, it is forgotten, that above all, well... this is a PHONE.
Hope the fix it.
Ive also noticed that you cant adjust the volume when the screen is locked.
AND every call i make/receive the volume is always at the max and extremely loud. So i have to right away turn it down. That happen for anyone else?
This might seem like a silly question...
However:
On my S1, when I hit silent or vibration only, when an email arrives, the S1 doesn't make a noise (or vibrates) ie. the notification (like Haze) doesn't play.
yet on the S3, no matter what I do, be it on silent, vibration or what not, the sound STILL plays.
Am I becoming crazy or did samsung just overlook an important bug?
-Chris
Did you check all the volume levels?
(Hit the button on the right side when you turn up / down the volume),
I've noticed that (At least in TouchWiz), the media and notification volumes don't always get lowered when you put it on silent.
Also check "System Settings -> Sound" to see if there's anything that would indicate that it should play a sound while in silent mode.
Confirmed, put phone on silent. Started a video, there was sound.
This sucks.

Hit the settings button that pops on the screen on the right of the volume level shown when you press the volume buttons.. change your media and notification levels from there...

Okay, but if you put the phone on silent it should be SILENT

that's not the point of the button that you press for silent.
Or else what would be the point of the button, when i have to manually do it myself?
I'll log this and get back to you.
I don't know about you, but that seems normal, coming from ICS from SGS2 and iPhone, silent means alerts/notifications is off. But when you play Music or Youtube or Videos will play the sound, if you're actively trying to play media then it makes sense to play sound.
Android has always (except for a brief spell) had separate volumes for ringers, media and alarms

that is normal.
But when a SMS is received, on an s2, and you have it on SILENT what happens?
Does the notification sound still play?
As on the S1...and pretty much any phone dating back to the 3310, it remains SILENT
I've noticed this issue also. Silent mode doesn't mute the notification volume as it should. The temporary work around is to set volume manually, but it seems it is a bug in the Touchwiz UX framework.
I for one can't wait until I get either stock ICS or CM9 (maybe JB or CM10 soon if we're lucky, the source was recently released). These little issues are resolved very quickly in a community developed ROM (less than a week in most cases). There is usually a wait of months for OTA updates.
I just pray that AdamOutler can crack the verizon GS3 bootloader to allow easy customization. The International, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint users have unlocked/unsigned bootloaders.
Grab audio manager on google play
Then you set the mute profile for all the sounds you want (ringtone, notifications, player,...) and then you add the widget to your homescreen
When you want to mute, just "click" on the widget, got to the profile tab and then select your mute profile

What firmware would that be, out of curiosity? I'm running XXLFB based ROM and it's still not fixed, been driving me insane.
Not sure this helps if you've already got it fixed but I've been using RealSilent ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.geekherd.realsilent ) as recommended by Jerry over at AC. Pretty handy, but not sure how it works with the stock silent toggle in the notification pull down.
It does however work perfectly with CM9.

I'm on lfb, but on darkyrom v2.
I think lfb did it for me.

Isn't that app for the media volume, not notification?
I thought CM9 came with an option to link notification volume with ringer, so that notification on silent is no longer an issue purely because of that.
Maybe I will try a LG1 based ROM... can't believe Samsung overlooked something so basic.

After trying about 5 different apps including volume +, finally found a straightforward workaround, use the app called simple sound profile widget:
I can't post links yet since I'm under 10 posts, so search for it on Google play.
Really the issue is that Samsung unlinked notification and ringer, but left vibrate and silent toggle alone, so all it does is mute the ringer and not the notification. You'll notice on silent or vibrate, go to system volume and ringer volume still stays the same but shows a mute icon, while notifications volume does not. To fix this you need an app that, when toggling profiles, does not assume ringer and notifications are linked, and also TURNS DOWN VOLUME TO ZERO for both notification and ringer, as I don't believe mute for notifications is working. Simple sound does exactly that, the only thing missing is a true toggle widget since you have to click the widget then select a profile, but it fixed the notification issue properly so I'm not complaining.

Maybe your custom ROM fixed it, I'm on Omega 8.1 which is base on LFB, issue is still there.
Recently I've noticed a problem that I most certainly didn't have before. The problem is that the in call volume keeps going down to around 50% with every new call. When I receive or make a call, the in call volume is around 50%, which is not enough for me. So I make it louder to 100% and can talk just fine. Unfortunately, with a new call the volume goes down again to the same default volume around 50%, which means I have to turn the volume up every time I receive or make a call. This is really annoying. I'm absolutely positive that I did not have the problem before. What might cause the problem and what can be done about it?
P.S. Settings >>> Sound >>> Volume - all the sliders are on the right.

Go to Phone -> Call settings -> My Call sound.
You can try this. Or use the extra volume button when calling someone.

I have tried that (both checking and unchecking the option) - the problem remains. The extra volume button is not an option since tapping it every time is even more annoying than increasing the volume with the Volume Up button.

As a last resort, I finally did. It worked. Luckily, I had a two week old nandroid backup, so, hating to restore all the apps and settings manually, I just fell back to that backup. It appears that I did not have the problem in question two weeks ago, so after restoring from the backup I got back all my apps and settings with no in call volume issue. But it is still unclear what caused the problem and how to fix it if it pops up again.
you have to set the volume to 100 in audio settings, doing so will save the settings. also you can get some extra volume by going into dialer call settings and tick "use extra vol for calls"

But "extra volume" icon is not activated for next call and have to re-tap it to enable again. That's bad.
