Folder icons not staying put..... - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Created a few folders with Direct Call or Direct Message contacts. Then moved them into the order I wanted. They keep re-arranging back to the way they were added. My GNex never did this. Damn you TouchWIZ !
Seriously anyone else experiencing this ?
thanks

I actually just noticed this yesterday.
I have a folder with Navigation, Maps, and then a bunch of quick navigation shortcuts, and I just noticed yesterday that the icons for Navigation and Maps had transposed themselves. I figured I must have done it myself. But now that you brought it up, I looked again, and it seems that many of my other folders have rearranged themselves.
I'm going to have to keep a close eye on this. I'm very intrigued.

I just noticed that it happened again

Can change all quicklink icons except Facebook icon.

I've only been poking around in this amazing device for two days now, and thanks to these forums and the amazing mods submitted by the developers, I have been able to change all of the icons except one. Even though the Facebook icon is updated under the start menu, I cannot for the life of me get it to change in quicklinks. My reading of the forms has led me to the registry, and yes the startup icon points to the right path. I've noticed (and this may be the crux of the problem) that every time I reboot, sense creates a new start icon_htc_facebook png and qtc file(eventhough I've renamed the origonal file)in the Windows folder. My question is, is there any way to get the new Facebook icon to appear in quicklinks, or am I stuck with the default Facebook icon? Again thanks to the developers for all the cool stuff and advice which is been posted on this website. PS I'm looking forward to a fully working version of android for this device. Keep up the good work guys.

What software did you use to change your icon? Anyway, once you have changed you icon, use this clever software to clean up your icon cache. It will clears your old cache and replaces it with your new replaced icons. The software to use is SICC. Do a search in forum, you will find it.
I used JWMD, hCcomber, and CMSI. Clearing the cache by hand has produced no results. I look for the program you suggested. Thanks for the tip.
SICC didn't work. Clearing the cache doesn't seem to be the problem. For some reason, when the OS is rebooted, a new start icon_htc_Facebook png and qtc file is created in the Windows folder. This occurs even if the old files have been renamed. Previous programs I've used have been: JWMD,hComber, and CMSI. I think the solution to the problem is stopping the creation of the new PNG and QTC files in Windows. I just don't know how to stop them being created on restart.
Have you tried deleting the quicklink in question and recreating it?
PS while it may sound like I know what I'm doing, I assure you I really don't. Two days ago I didn't know what a PNG or QTC file was. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the posts offered on this forum.

[Q] Looking for my lost app!!

Hello all, did a factory reset yesterday, backed up all my apps, or so I thought, the market did save some of my paid apps, but not all, and the free ones were gone, glad a I made a list before, anywho, about 2 weeks ago, I downloaded an app that was still in beta stages ,I believe, from a developer here on XDA, it gives notifications of missed texts, emails, and phone calls that puts a little number next to each icon on your home screen, it worked great, and I can't find it again....anywhere, anyone know what I'm talking bout? I remember it saying it was in beta stages and still had a couple bugs, but it worked well for me...thanks
Probably not the one you're looking for but, SMS Unread Count does a similar job.
Let me know if you ever rediscover the original app, sounds like something I might like to try!
was it missed it?
yeah it didnt get saved for some reason, it was pretty cool, with my phone icon and messaging icon on the home screen it would insert the number of misses into the icon, sucks I cant find it!

Blocking Mode found on the Verizon Note 2. Not fully functional.

Well, bad news folks. It seems that while we can indeed get to Blocking Mode, it doesn't appear to be fully functional. When I first found it and tested it out, it successfully blocked the calls I made from my computer via Gmail and Skype. But after some further tests this afternoon, it didn't actually block any calls made by some friends via their cell phones. So, while it's there, it doesn't seem like it's fully functional. At the very least, maybe this gives us some hope for someone out there to find a way to get it working consistently or that Verizon will enable it in a future update.
___________________________________________________________________________
I was playing around with one of my favorite apps Any Cut. Regrettably, Any Cut (which isn't available in the Play Store any more) doesn't work correctly on Jelly Bean, but it works enough to be able to take a look at many of the shortcuts it's able to find. And low and behold, Blocking Mode was in the list. Since Any Cut is problematic on Jelly Bean (it kind of works, but not completely), I found another app on the Play Store that operates in much the same way that Any Cut does - QuickShortcutMaker.
No root required!
Here's how to get to it:
1) Download QuickShortcutMaker from the Play Store. (Note: the app closed on me a few times while trying to use it, but it eventually worked)
2) After QuickShortcutMaker installs, open it up.
3) Type Blocking Mode in the text field. The app is pretty slow when it comes to populating the available shortcuts, so it might take a little bit. Once it finishes, tap on the first result at the top (It will say "Settings" with Blocking mode underneath it.
4) Rename the shortcut to whatever you want. It's named "Settings" by default, and I changed mine to "Blocking Mode."
5) Tap "OK."
6) You'll now have a shortcut on your homescreen that will take you right into Blocking Mode (the icon will be a cog just like the Settings icon). Open it up and and block away! (Note: the shortcut on your homescreen will be the only way to access Blocking Mode, so if you delete it, you'll have to create a new one in order to get back into the settings for it)
Known issues:
The app will force close when trying to add contacts to the custom allowed contact list. But it seems to work fine when selecting "Favorites" as opposed to creating a new custom list. So if adding contacts to a custom list is force closing for you, add the contacts that you want to come through to your general favorites list when Blocking Mode is enabled, and then use the Favorites option in the Blocking Mode settings.
Thank you!! Now lets figure out how to get the S Planner widget on this thing.

I am as well. It's probably due to the fact that Verizon doesn't have it fully implemented. Try adding the contacts you want to come through to your general contacts favorites list and then select the favorites option in Blocking Mode. That worked for me. I've updated the original post to reflect this.
I didn't think of that. Thanks!

Cant help but think Samsung left it in on purpose so we'd find it and shove it to vzw.
Alot of speculation was they leaked the insecure bootloader for the gs3 as well.
This is a great find, thanks.

Blocking mode allows you to set a specified period of time during which the phone will not ring. But you can set it so that the phone will still ring for certain contacts during the time it's enabled.
For instance, I don't want to be disturbed while I'm sleeping by random calls or texts, but I don't put my phone into silent mode while I'm asleep because I'm worried that I'll miss an emergency call from family. With Blocking Mode, I can block all calls/notifications from coming through except calls/notifications from certain people. So calls/notifications that I feel might be important, like from family or certain friends, will come through, but all others won't. That way I'm only woken up by people who I feel are important enough to wake up for.
It's also helpful in other situations when you're busy and don't want to be disturbed except by certain people.
Wow EXCELLENT find OP!!! Much kudos to you!
I can't help but feel so offended by Verizon and how they butchered this great phone, or rather tried to...
After almost a month solid holding it back from us, they finally release it and what do you know? They strip it of features that are intended to be part of the phone as sold by Samsung. The fact that it's still there but HIDDEN is proof of this concept.
We need to send this info to all the big phone journalism sites out there like Engadget, Gizmodo, Droid-Life etc and blow some serious smoke up Verizon's ass. Let them know we are disgusted by their attempts to remove features from our phones that no other carrier has done.
Hopefully they realize they were wrong and to fix the negative publicity they decide to send out an update that adds the missing features back. They better

I sent it into Droid-Life this morning after I found it, and a short time ago they posted a story about it - How to: Enable "Blocking Mode" on Verizon's Galaxy Note 2
I doubt this particular issue will get enough coverage to cause any measurable negative publicity, but hopefully it can at least bring some of the stuff Verizon is choosing to do to light for a greater audience.

Cool thats what i tought. Thanks for verifying for me!
tried this, and like others got the force closes when trying to add contacts to "custom". Problem is, this isn't working. I even tried allowing no contacts (to block everything), and every call or text still goes through!
I tried this by calling from my work phone (that isn't anywhere in my contact list), and even call or texting from my regular contacts. These should all be blocked, but they all get through- texts and calls.
I've tried rebooting, but nothing seems to be blocked.

This can also be achieved using a custom Launcher like Nova or Apex. To do this, long press on the home screen, click "Shortcuts" --> "Activities" --> "Blocking Mode".
Granted, the OP way uses the stock TouchWiz, but just offering another solution.
Enjoy!

don't understand much of google now

Hi
if a topic already exists with an answer to my question, please forgive me, i searched but didn't find.
All in all, here's my question : how does google now work? i can't find a way to chose which cards are displayed, in which order, etc ...
for instance, i set a google now widget on my homesreen with 3 row dimension, but it uses only one, and displays only the next task in my calendar, even though i got 4 coming today and it has empty space where it could display them.
Also when in google now, i can't find a way to order my tabs :-/ i would like my calendar tabs over the meteo ones, etc
all this seems very "not ergonomical" but i guess i'm just confused....
thanks a lot for your answers
Régis
Hope you Understand
Google Now collects all the data available and then accordingly tells you about them.
For Eg.- If you travel from one place to another regularly it will collect that particular data. Through Maps
Then it would show you the Estimated time and traffic related details.
It also provides Bus or Train timings if your nearby a Railway or Bus station.
Similarly it provides many useful cards BUT it requires a working data plan and time.
mmh i guess i'll give it a try then. but what about rearranging cards ?

[Q] Problems with jelly bean update. Talk back in particular.

I updated to jelly bean last week. It came with talk back. trying everything I can think of, I have come to the conclusion that if anything else in accessibility is on, talk back come on too. I have a pebble watch, an love it. But when either it, or pebble notifier, it light wave is on, then the blasted voice tells me everything I am doing. It's very annoying. I tried stopping talkback with system tuner, which led to even worse problems. (like no touch screen function except with the s-pen.) Does anyone know how to get rid of talk back? Thanks in advance.

Disable it in settings/application manager/all applications. Find talkback and select uninstall updates. After updates are uninstalled go back into talkback from application manager, select force stop, then disable.
Right! Never delete a system app until you have disabled it or froze it with TiBU, then tested your phone fir a day or so. You never know how or what those apps are connected to.

True. Thats why I tried to disable it. And google text to speech. And Samsung text to speech. Each one stops it for a while. Then it comes back on even though it shows it is disabled. Its enough to make you start pulling out your hair.
If it says it is off then you are experiencing something else. What speech are you getting?

For me the issue was being caused by that fact that I have NoLED turned on in Accessibility. And it's a known issue with the developer of NoLED because he has a FAQ item about it. The best I've been able to do is get the talkback completely silent by disabling Talkback, Google Text to Speech and Samsung TTS. NoLED still works, and the nagging voice is gone, the only unwanted artifact is the HAND icon of Talkback that continues to show up in the Notification bar even though it's not running. I can live with that way easier than hearing that silly voice telling me everything I was doing.
For what it's worth I think the guides provided concerning rooting and rom upgrades for this phone are not as explicit or clearly written as they could be. Kudos to those who took time to do and provide what's there, and I realize that they've most likely moved on to newer devices, but even though I've rooted most of my devices in the past and am not a complete noob I did not feel comfortable using the provided instructions on this device. I haven't bricked a device yet, and don't want to start with this one.
Well, I'm not running no led. Whenever any of the services I use are active (pebble, or pepple notifier) are activated, talkback is activated. Like you, I have rpoted every device up to this one. Not really scared of bricking it. Just not sure a new rom would help. Contacted samsung, and was told it was a hardware problem. Like I'm an idiot. Obviously its in the software. Just not sure if it is samsung specific. Guess I'll just keep bumbling along with this work around.

FYI. You can get rid of the Talkback icon after each reboot by opening the notification bar, touch and hold Talkback, pick App Info, this will open into Settings App Info (for some reason), pick force stop and then the icon is gone until the next reboot.

Thanks. However, every time I have force stoped it, my touch screen will only work with the stylus. Touch input goes dead. And sometimes the touch alignment goes so that when you touch in one place, it refesters somewhere else. Guess I'll just live with the hand.

This whole Talkback feature appears to be filled with issues. I think I'll live with the hand (and not talk to it, lol), rather than risk more complications and further issue. So far I like Jellybean, but I hope that the next version of Android on Samsung devices fixes these issues.
As an aside, another thing that took me by surprise was the use of a new mountpoint for the external SD card. It took me a bit to figure out why /sdcard/external_sd was empty of files, but Music and other apps were able to see the data I had on the card. It's been awhile since my days as a UNIX SA and it dawned on me, literally in the middle of the night that perhaps the OS was using a different mountpoint. I was very relieved to find it under /storage/extSdCard and that my data was both there and able to be used.

Did you uninstall TalkBack (using something like Titanium BackUp) and not just disable it? If so, when you pick App Info from the Talkback notification does it open up the "Settings Version 4.1.2-I717UCMD3" app? If not It might be that we have different apps installed causing a different app to come up. If this is the case, would you mind trying going into Settings, Application Manager, All, Settings (the one with "Version 4.1.2-I717UCMD3", I have 2 Settings apps) and force stop that and see if that works.
I never uninstalled talkback. Since i haven't bothered rooting. forced stop defiantly gave me headaches, so I settled for stopping the text to speech of google and samsung. Running android 4.1.2. Ive seen on other posts where this is a samsung issue, and hopefully they are working on it. Looks like we have the same versions. Baseband i717ucmd3 with android version 4.1.2 \. Build # JZO54k.i717ucmd3. Force stopping just screws up my touchscreen, so I'll leave it enabled for now. Maybe Samsung will fix it, but I won't be holding my breath....

I too have a Pebble, and have had the issue with talkback showing up on every reboot. I had seen that it was a Samsung issue, so all I do is get rid of it on reboots. Just turn your Pebble Notifier, or I think any other accessibility app, off then back on. This will get rid of the hand, and thus far I have not had it talk to me at all. But I am running Padawan currently, so YMMV. To turn things off and on, just select the talkback notification from the bar to get into accessibility settings.
I ended up rooting for a couple of reasons. I had already frozen Google Text to Speech, Samsung Text to Speech, or whatever it's called, and the Talkback app but still had the hand. After rooting I was able to tap on Talkback in the pull down notification screen and turn off notifications of it. Strange that is was still there, but it worked and the hand hasn't been back.
