All rooted phones will display this.

my phone also showed "modified" but after a few days of typical usage, it changed to "normal." i wouldn't worry about it.

My I747M is rooted, but my phone status says normal, has since i rooted it yesterday.

If you installed busybox, it will show modified. Uninstall busybox, reboot, its back to normal.

Internal counter
I believe SGS2 had an internal counter that kept track if the phone had been rooted or a rom installed, the counter could NOT be reset, this is how they kept track if you had messed with the phone or not if I'm not mistaken.
I'm assuming sgs3 also has an internal counter that can not be reset.

Yup, BusyBox is what did it to me as well. I didn't look in that settings pane you have pictured there, however I noticed a "Custom Rom" text displayed during boot-up. This didn't exist prior to busybox installation, despite being rooted...

After removing busy my device still says modified.

Im not going to try that but Im sure mine will perform the same way...
How did you root btw?
I did it using the Odin-flashable image (Stock + Root) found here in the Android dev subforum...

Hmmm . So is not related to just busybox. Should this me related to everything you do with your phone?

When I had the SGS3 International mine said modified. Before I sold it I ran triangle away (which works on our phones now btw) and flashed back to stock. Status went back to normal. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're returning it for warranty or the person you sell it to wants it un-modified. And then just flash back to stock and run triangle away beforehand to wipe flash counter

Remove root. Help need please

Hi,
I am rooted on my S3 and all is good. However, my Father also has an S3 and last week he was talked into rooting it by his Grandson. All went well but long story short he was not happy with having a rooted phone so has decided to remove root. He has now done so by following various guides. He used Triangle away which he says went successfully and has used Odin to put the latest stock firmware on the phone which again he says went successfully. I was not there when he did all this but phone seems all good.
Except one thing. He has tried to install a couple of apps he had before rooting. Barclays bank app and Sky Go app. After installation these apps are saying they will not work on a rooted phone, but it's not rooted any more. I have booted into recovery using Volume down, power and home buttons and it says custom firmware / rom, I can't remember exact wording, but it says no. Also in the phone menu where a rooted phone says modified in device status it says normal or whatever it should say. Again can't remember exactly but all looks like no root present.
Anyone got any ideas on this? As I am rooted on my S3 and never un-rooted it yet, I do not know if he should have done something else. Will he have to root again to run triangle away or anything else. Or can this be fixed as the phone is at present?
Thanks for any help guys.
Cheers, Rich

One basic question..are you still able to go into recovery..vol up+power+home..if yes you are still rooted...you need to find your stock firmware and flash it via odin
check if it was a stock firmware your father flashed orcustom ROM o.follow this guide to do it again

Sounds like maybe triangle away didnt properly remove the count, was the firmware he downloaded the official one for his phone? Was it previously branded or anything like that?

Hi,
He has superSu on the phone. Presumably it has downloaded from the play store when restoring the phone. However, he tried to uninstall it which just removed the updates. Couldn't go any further. It is now asking for updates which he has done. But when he tries to launch Super SU it says no apps configured and won't go any further. I think the fact that super su is on the phone, the apps are thinking it is rooted. I am doing this all over the phone so can't see what's happening.
I'm wondering if the way to go now would be another factory reset and when restoring everything, try not to let play store instal super su. Would this be the way to go, or can we get super su off the phone without a reset?
Cheers, Rich
Try uninstalling super su with titanium backup. Then factory reset. Are you sure you have flashed a stock ROM and not a rooted one. This doesnt sound right.

Hi,
Trying to do these things with him over the phone ain't easy. I may just go and get the phone and do it myself.
He does have supersu on the phone and it is working, well it's installed anyway but obviously does not do the root things as the phone is un-rooted. There is an option in supersu settings to remove root but will this work as the phone is not rooted? Question is how on earth do I remove supersu. Do i need to re-root and remove it that way?

[Q] Question about getting my Note 2 back to where it was once it is back from Sammy

Hey guys, I sent my Note 2 into Samsung in Texas to repair it since the wifi was not connecting. Prior to sending it in, I had it rooted and unlocked based on the instructions on this site, but I put it back to stock (using those same directions) to limit the chance that sammy would screw me on my warranty.
I checked the status of my repairs today and it says they replaced the mainboard, so now I am wondering what I will have to do to get it back to its rooted and unlocked state the way it was before sending in. I am guessing that all I will have to do is boot into recovery and flash a rom, but maybe the stock process did more than that.
If anyone could walk me through the steps it takes to get from where it is to where it was, that would be great. Again, it was rooted and unlocked, then I used Odin to go back to stock (which I think means rooted stock, so simply the stock software while still being rooted and unlocked), and now I want to send it back to rooted/unlocked. Also, remember that the mainboard was replaced, and I am not sure if that matters to the whole process.
Thanks!
Head in over to the development section and check out Adam Outlers thread. Very detailed and great way to root and unlock.

But do I need to reroot it? I guess I assumed that putting it back to stock meant rooted/unlocked stock, or stock software. No big deal, I can just reroot/unlock it like I did the first time, but I assumed it was something different.
I'd use triangle away too. I did that before sending it to vzw. Oddly, my counter was at 0

No it's not. Triangle away is an app that resets your flash counter to 0. You needed to use it before using odin to stock so it's to late right now.
To get back to where you were you will need to repeat the unlock process by Adam. When you used odin you unrooted and relocked your phone. Think of it being just like the day you got it now.

You sure about this? I thought the only way TriangleAway works is if you flash back stock ROM/kernel. I never used it before and my flash counter was at 0.
Anyways, also I would reset factory defaults if your firmware shows Modified, as well.
There was something on the lock/unlock thread about going back to stock and keeping the phone unlocked. It said if you were using the ota that made the phone so hard to unlock that you should flash a different tar file (an alternate one) to stay unlocked. I will track it down and post it here, but it made it seem like it would keep the phone unlocked.

Yes I'm sure. The bootloader had to be unlocked for triangle away to work (see screen shot from triangle away OP). So when he uses odin and re locks it's to late. Also, flashing stock firmware doesn't trip the flash counter.

There is an "alternate restore" file that does not flash a boot loader. If that's what you flashed then your boot loader is still unlocked. In the op you didn't specify you just said you restored to stock which would suggest full stock with a lock bootloader.

My solution
OK, so I got the phone back and ran into a few hiccups but got it worked out.
Basically I got the phone and re-rooted it and when I tried to install a new recovery I got an error telling me that I am using bad software and I should take the phone to VZW (yeah right).
I then hopped back on ODIN and went back to stock, same way I did before sending it in to Sammy. Once I did that, I went back to the thread about rooting/unlocking and found that there was an update since I last visited. Now, there was a one click method so I decided to give that a shot. I plugged her in, had some issues with drivers but got it worked out, then ran the process. Once it was finished, all was well.
I am not sure if the phone was still rooted/unlocked or not, but either way the one click method appeared to straighten it out.

[ROM][ODIN][TAR] SM-N900P MI3 Stock Restore Tar

Credits: Our thanks to Samsung-Updates.com for posting MI3/MI5.
Until I have time to clean this up I figured I would post this now and we'll update it later.
It's more important to make sure people have this while testing new things.
Samsung-Updates.com has posted MI3 here:
http://samsung-updates.com/details/14398/Galaxy_Note_3_Sprint/SM-N900P/SPR/N900PVPUBMI3.html
MI5 Link:
http://samsung-updates.com/details/14398/Galaxy_Note_3_Sprint/SM-N900P/SPR/N900PVPUBMI5.html
As usual we're putting it up on Rwilco's repository. I am not doing anything with them though for a few reasons.
1) At the moment neither I or rwilco12 have a device to test with.
2) Given the issues with Knox I am leary in doing anything without addressing #1.
Link to Stock ROMs:
http://www.rwilco12.com/downloads.php?dir=Files/Devices/Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900P)/Stock ROMs/
Download, flash in Odin/Heimdall. This current version will wipe your data.
TESTED AND WORKING - Great Work bud!
Any other DL links? Its not downloading anything.. On either link. Thanks
EDIT: Might be on my end I think it is working now. I already did something and messed it up. Very easy fix but I cant believe the n00b mistake I did lol. Oh well
Edit 2: Last one lol but link did work and was able to restore. Thanks!

Couple questions
I am roped with TWRP but want to reinstall the stock ROM again but keep my recovery and hopefully root.
Will this allow that? I'd so how do I flash it?
Also saw this was MI3 if I do flash this can I update to MI5 again after?

Keeping Root I545VRUDMI1

Not sure if its posted but I have been asked a bit about keeping root. I took the OTA from Verizhon not Kies so I am not sure if that makes up for anything. Anywho, I took the plunge with both Voodoo and SU Pro backing up my root and kept it. I know there are root methods out there for it already so its not horrible if you have lost it. Just letting you know, Voodoo, SU Pro works.,,

Voodoo does work.
I can attest to that. The biggest issue with updates after ME7 is now the knox warranty flag is included in the boot loader.
I see the knox status when I go into download mode and it was not there before.
I'm already rooted so the flag didn't trip.
Be careful with this update, only do it via OTA so that Voodoo can restore root.
If you do it vie Kies or Verizon software, you will lose root *AND* re-rooting may flip the flag.

Voodoo worked from me from rooted ME7 via OTA update. I got the "Custom" lock symbol on reboot after Voodoo restore, but Triangle Away seems to have corrected that. What is the Knox status? I'm not familiar with that so I don't know how to check that? Could you elaborate?

Did you use Kies or just the OTA? As I said in my post I used the OTA from the phone. Kies may be doing something additional to the phone.
Worse case scenario is you will need to reflash ME7/ MI1 from odin and root again using the "root de le vega" method

DO you have TiBu and freeze/ deleted bloat and stock apps? If that's the case depending on what it was it will error. Like I said I took mine over the phone after checking for it the other day manually. If manual doesn't work Kies will update it when plugging into your PC.
Hopefully if anything was deleted a backup of stock was made and you can reload it. If not, just try unfreezing everything thing. Assuming you are using or have used TiBu.

Have you deleted anything not just freeze? If there is a fail on install its usually a self check fail... something it's looking for is missing.
I have the stock ME7 image and could upload it to drop box so you could reflash on odin, LMK. To me it sounds like a app or stock system piece is missing. I've seen OTAs fail on Motorola phones simply because the yahoo app was deleted. I know, it doesn't make sense, but its what the phone self checks before installing the download.
Titanium doesn't sow any apps deleted but I did have Samsung watch set to user app. Adjusted that back and still nothing. Going to try pulling SD card tomorrow and try the update again. Guess we'll see what happens

I still think a clean slate wipe is in order. Other people even on the Root De La Vega report a taking OTA it working and keeping it as well.
Like I said, I froze but never deleted, but if if you deleted the backups stored in TiBu at one point, the deleted app its not going to show in TiBu. Thats why I always make a backup first of the fresh phone and upload it to drop box before even freezing things.
I may end up going that route. Good thing we can backup apps to the moon with tibu! Have u noticed improvements on the new update?

Nothing has caught my eye. Others are reporting the 4G is now operating off another/additional frequency or something like that, l and getting better reception but I have never had a problem where I live.
Did u happen to backup all your apps before rooting? I'm thinking I must have an app that was deleted and not backed up. I found that NFL was that way so installed and changed it to a system app with tibu

I'm trying to take the ota update but i'm a newb and didn't read about ME7's inability to flash roms and used ROM Manager to flash CWM. I think i need to restore the "stock" recovery in order to take the ota update.
Long time reader, first time poster.
Three questions.
1) For the "root de le vega" method, can I use 'Odin Mobile Pro'?
I don't have a PC so I can't easily use 'Odin' and i'm not sure how 'Odin Mobile Pro' relates to 'Odin'.
Is it the same thing but internal?
2) I have frozen tons of apps.
From my understanding from earlier posts, I need to unfreeze them all or this will fail?
3) After the Mi1 OTA, will my hotspot not work? or my wifi all together?
Thanks in advance

[Q] Need Help with Triangle Away 3.25

I just updated to 4.3 and also change my CSC from XEF (France) to SER (Russia) Now I use CF Autoroot to root my phone and then when I tried to check update status via OTA it says that I modified my device. Now after searching google on what to do I end up with Triangle Away I followed all the intructions and whenever I tap on Flash Counter the notification prompts then afterwards nothing happens.
I want to stay on a stock rooted firmware so I do not know what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Root equals not OTA as described many times. You need counter 0 and original state which you only get by unrooting as far as I know.

Completely agree with you. Root means it is not stock. The device is modified.
@phaw16 - Every time you will boot into custom recovery, your flash counter will go back to 1. So no point in having or using TriangleAway if you want to stay rooted.

Hmm? The question is? How can you use triangle away of you are not rooted?
So you meant you can still use triangle away even if you are not rooted?
Well I dont really care about my warranty all I want is to recieve OTA updates even if my phone is rooted. Thats the main reason why I want my device status to be stock..

As far as i know if you're using Custom Recovery. Flash counter would always be 1. Try using Stock Recovery and reset it again. It would go to 0. As far as OTA im not sure i never use it before.

that depends on the bootloader version. If it is still an old on (I think JB) the counter will stay 0 even if rooted and rebooted. If its a newer version (ICS) and you use a custom recovery, it will be increased to 1 with each reboot.

as said, OTA & root is not possible. You can update a rooted device via Kies though (you will loose root when update is applied).

Sorry to disappoint you sir but I was able to flash stock firmware 4.3 then flash CF Autoroot while the phone is on official status. If you install busybox or other recovery and kernels thats the only time your phone will detect it as custom. I also downloaded root protection app for google play so that when I recieve ota update I wont lose root

In triangle away there is an option under system to allow trackers to run.
This in some cases can get rid of the modified state in the about phone part.
I tried it and it worked for me while I was on samsung
