Can anyone confirm this bug? I just picked up my replacement Inc 4G due to various issues. However, this one sticks.
Click on the Music app or go in through settings, personalize, sounds and set a custom ringtone.
Now, restart the phone.
Is it still there or is it gone? It's gone for me every single time.
You can also plug it in to your computer, mount as disk drive and then charge only. It reverts back to the stock tones here too.
Note: Default factory tones work but customs tones do not after a restart.
HTC has noted the bug since they can't help me.

Works fine for me. Are you running any third-party apps that deal with ringtones/notifications?
Interesting. No I am not. Are your tones mp3, wav or something else? Also, what folder are they coming from (sd storage folder, phone storage, etc.) Thanks in advance!

A little late, but yes, I did have this problem and actually got so frustrated by it, I returned the phone. My replacement phone seemed to be ok until today, when I had to reinstall my RUU (stock ROM) and now it won't recognize ANY of my custom ringtones, even though they're still clearly visible on my SD card. Furthermore, there is no message in the notification bar when it boots up "Preparing SD card" like I believe there used to be. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

It's a day later and I'm still having no luck getting the phone to see my custom ringtones, which I've basically carried around with me from phone to phone over the years. I thought maybe copying them into the pre-installed folders that were installed on my SD card (alarms, ringtones, notifications) would help, but that didn't work either.
Before that they were in the standard setup for the OG Incredible: Media>Audio>Ringtones, etc, which always worked fine, and worked fine on this phone until my recent issues and having to reinstall stock RUU. Flashed Viper 2.0 last night, however, and custom ringtones still not showing up.
Note: I've unmounted and remounted SD card several times, done battery pulls, and all physical files are visible using Astro. Just not visible when I try to set them via the Personalize Setting.
Any thoughts? Thanks

Put them in the same folder as other ringtones I think its system/media. Change permission to match the others reboot profit?

I had this problem for a while, too.
Try putting your custom ringtones in
/sdcard/Ringtones
I haven't had the issue since.
ETA:
Put alarms in
/sdcard/Alarms
Notifications in
/sdcard/Notifications

I've also noticed that my SD card is not being recognized in the Gallery either (none of my previous camera shots are visible). (I'm running Viper 2.0. I'll check the Viper threads when I get home to see if there are any threads related to this)
I actually don't see System Folders on neither the phone, the internal storage nor my SD card, which is kind of odd since I remember those folders clearly on other phones. A few days ago, I "accidentally" did a system wipe from TWRP, as I was used to using CWM, and got a little hasty. I hope that didn't wipe out crucial folders.
After not being able to find System folders, I did move my notifications to internal storage into the folders which came with the phone, but no luck. (Which was suggested above by Junkmail19)
I'm definitely having some issues at the moment, so I'm going to restore back to Stock and see if that helps at all. Thanks for any further insight you or anyone else can add.
P.S. Just restored back to Stock, and gallery is back, but custom ringtones still not accessible. I sure do miss those guys....

I finally got this going. Thanks for your suggestion. That's what worked. Just wondering why suddenly after unlocking/root, my custom notifications were no longer recognized on either the external or internal SD?
Does everyone have to (or will have to) move custom ringtones to the System Folder? It seems kind of odd, and I was just curious if anyone had an explanation why or is it just a singular quirk of my particular phone?

Anyone know of a fix for the ringtones/notification tones not sticking on GSB? I've had this problem since CM added "profiles". Just flashed v2.6 last night and haven't had a phone call yet to see if it persists.
Edit...Don't answer......I went a little crazy and built up my post count so I could post my question on the GSB thread..
sorry but i'm just gonna use this thread i started to boost my post count so i can post my question on the GSB thread.

Well, I'll give you credit. It's better than posting useless things in other and/or dead threads!
Bumping this for Posts, And to find out if you ever got that ringtone thing figured out?
I've been having problems with this ever since I installed GSB, and am about at my wits end.
I've tried the following:
Set with Handcent, Group ringtone, and Contact Group Manager.
Convert all to .ogg format and then same as above.
Push all the ogg files to /system/media/audio/ringtones and chmod 644 on all
AND set with the previous methods, as well as individually with both android system and Handcent picker.
Ive also disabled DSP manager, but that didnt' seem to affect it. neither did full wipes/reinstall.
I even backed up the SD card, did a 3 pass overwrite in windows, and then formatted it in recovery, mounted USB, copied the files, flashed fresh 3.2, gapps, and cache2cache and rebooted completely fresh, and pushed all the ogg files back to system and they still don't stick.

Rather than doing that, just put them in the SD card in a folder called /ringtones or /audio/ringtones or /media/audio/ringtones (you get the picture, I hope). Don't bother with chmod. What happens then?
That doesn't work either. That's where I started from, with the media/audio/ringtone folder on my sd card, and it worked fine there on every other rom I've used until I started using GSB.
If I could get this ringtone thing worked out, it'd be perfect. I hate having to look at the phone to see who's calling.
I may have figured this out. I noticed it wastaking a long time to "wake up" when the phone rang so I played with the clock setting and had to drop it down to 710 from 748, bit it seems to be working so far.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
That didn't work. Worked fine yesterday, but today it just plays the default ringtone for all calls.
This is getting really irritating.

Still not working right. I can't figure this out for the life of me. I've been having this problem since v2.9 of GSB, and it's continuing right up to the new 3.4 ODEx version.
Last weekend I reformatted the SD card, wiped the phone, and put a fresh install of XtrSense 5.01 on and the ringtones worked fine, so I wiped the sd card again, and installed the brand new version of GSB when it was released, and the second call i recieved went to the default ringtone :/
well, this makes 10 posts, so I can go ask the man himself now.
You're not the only one having this issue, and I too believe I started noticing it around the time that the profiles were introduced into CM....
I don't know what it could be. I've tried removing profiles, converting everything to .ogg and sticking it in the system/media/audio/(ringtones/alarms/notifications) folders, freezing DSP, Overclocking, underclocking.
actually alarms and notifications work fine, its just ringtones. :/
I've recently installed the official OTA HC Update on my BB 16G WiFi Flyer and noticed that the stock Music App (and any other Music App for that matter) doesn't find any of my music off of the MicroSD Card. Is anyone else having this issue and if so, has anyone found a fix?

Thanks. I did reboot and wait to no avail. In addition, I removed and re-inserted the card. I also copied my music files to the internal storage but still nothing. When the stock music app searches for files, I get a forced close message: "android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly".
I also found the the Gallary App doesn't see any photos stored on the card but when I take new photos with the camera, they do show up. This is strange. Maybe I will format the microSD card and copy the files over again via a USB connection to the Flyer.

I have tried reformating the card, rebooting and turning off fastboot. I am out of ideas. I think it is time to try a factory reset. If that doesn't work, I guess it is back to GB.
Did an install of a new Rom last night. Had this problem. Rebooted, still not working. Installed power amp. Could see my music with that app. About an hour later, my stock music found my music. Don't think this is a real fix but sharing my recent experience

Well, I am relatively sure the problem is with HTC's Wifi OTA HC Upgrade. I rolled back to GB and low-and-behold, my sd card music is there as are my photos and videos. I decided to try one more time and ran the OTA Update again...same story, Music and Gallery doesn't find any of my files.
So, one more time...back to GB and that is where I'll stay for now.
try installing a different player ... or leave ur music app running in backgroung for some time hope this might work.... if ur sd is class 4 or less it takes time to find music

Hi,
Try to clear the cache of the Music App. and the Gallery. At least this worked for me, within no time all my files showed up again
Another option you might try is to use ES File Explorer or a similar program. Go to the folders where your pictures and the music are, and create into this folder a new one. Don't put any files in this folder! Just rename the created folder in .nomedia and reboot with fastbootmode ( in the energy settings) disabled.
I had similar problems once with an Archos 70 Internettablet, and this was the solution that worked for me.....

I really appreciate the last two suggestions. I just don't think I want to go through getting all my apps and data back if I need to roll back again. Maybe someone else that has gone through with the OTA update and has the same problem can try these out.
There is need to roll back or anything like that to use the last 2 options. Just create an empty folder, named .nomedia in the folders where the files are that don't show up in your mediaplayers. You can do this using ES File Explorer ( for free in the Market) or you can hook up your Flyer to your PC, and create the .nomedia files there. Then just reboot...
First time happened was back in about a month ago. One day I noticed some of my pictures were gone ( may be 15 to 20 of them ) I could not find them in any where such as SD card internal/external the strange thing was some pictures still there until today so the defective SD card is ruled out and I was still using the stock firmware 2.3.3 then I also noticed there are other pictures ( almost 100 of them ) not actual pictures they just blank but all with different file names like: My piano, A day in Hollywood etc, etc.
No body has been messing up my phones because it stays with me at all times. The question is who deleted my pictures and put a bunch of files back? Could it be happened remotely like some one using Bluetooth to mess around if the person is happened to be near by? later on I upgraded my phone to 2.3.4 through KIES and hope it will help me to solve the mystery but it did not. By now I know those pictures are long gone...
Two or three days later I upgraded my phone to 2.3.5 until I found the official FW XWKL1 here in XDA, again, upgraded.
So some days later I decided to change song for my ringtone I found out all of them have been replaced by some files with number names. 41203,41204 the list go on...When I use Astro to look for my songs and they are all there ( inside the music folder ) I went back & click one of the number file to see what kind of song and the player pops up a message saying the file format is not supported. It took me almost 30 min to figure out and delete all the number files under MUSIC then I see all my songs back.
My question is has my phone been hacked or infected by viruses/spyware? Or software glitch? I don't have data plan. To go online I use my home wifi all the time.
If some one can help I'll be really appreciated.
Sounds like a problem with the sd card or phone itself.

Sounds like the card is corrupted. Just make a backup of everything on the card, and do a full format (not quick format) of it from your computer. That should fix it. I had a similar problem too recently. New files I transferred would get deleted and old deleted files would reappear. Maybe the file table is messed or something, I don't know, but a full format fixed it for me.
Note: Preferably use a card reader, or if you mount it as mass storage from your phone, do it from recovery if you're rooted. Otherwise just mount it as you would normally and proceed.

I had the same problem.
I had the same problem.
The solution was format SD card , after Back up some things i wanted from the card.
Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum as it could be either a problem with the phone itself or with the SD card.
Sometimes when I reboot my phone about 50mb-2gb of music disappears from my external MicroSD card (class 10 SanDisk). As far as I can tell its always entire folders that disappear, never individual files. It happens quite frequently (probably 1 in 3 reboots) and its extremely frustrating.
I removed the card from my phone and put it in my PC to perform a disk check (no errors found) and format it but the problem persisted.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this and how to fix it?

Yep, the files get completely deleted, I can't even see them when viewing the contents of the card on my PC.
Suggestion: If you have another sd card, try testing it. Then you will know whether is the card problem or the phone problem.

Okay so I tried testing the issue with an old 16gb class 2 Sandisk I had laying around (the one I'm currently having the issue with is 64gb). I rebooted the phone about six or seven times but I wasn't able to replcate the problem. The thing is I can't seem to trigger the problem again on my 64gb card even after rebooting about 10 times. So I'm geussing there's somrthing elese I've be doing in addition to rebooting the phone that has been causing the files to delete themselves. Any idea what that might be?
I guess all I can do now is just continue to use the phone normally, keep a close eye on what I'm doing and wait for the problem to arise again.
In the meantime here are few additional details:
The card is about 30gb full but its only ever about 2gb or less that go missing.
I was wrong about individual files being immune from deletion. about 90% of the songs in my GTA Vice City soundtrack disappeared (among other things). The weird thing is, is that when individual files are effected, they don't outright disappear from the card like folders do. The files are there but they're like ghost files or something, they just sort of get reduced dramatically in size and refuse to work. Its like what you'd have if you downloaded an album through a torrent but stopped the download around 10%, the files are visible, just incomplete.
While many things seem to disappear randomly, there also a bit a pattern. For example, my Elvis Costello, Elvis Presley and Rolling Stones folders all disappeared at once like three times in a row(maybe every time, I'm not quite sure). Not sure what's going on with that.
Don't know what is going on with your sd card. Anyway, glad that the problem somehow gone. Enjoy your phone and keep monitoring the sd card.

ARGHHH! It just happened again, all but one of the files in a folder somehow to reduced to 0.00kb. I'm just taking a wild guess here, could this have something to do with editing id3 tags in n7player? I think that's something most of the files have in common...
Could be. Try uninstall it or any apps you think may be related.

I tested this theory by editing various tags in n7player, rebooting, checking the available space on the SD card and repeating the process several times. Files disappeared about 3 in every 5 reboots so I think its safe to conclude that n7player was causing the problem. I didn't want to stop using n7player completely as it is by far my favorite music app, so now when I need to edit tags directly from phone I use ID3Fixer (but I mainly stick to editing files on my PC prior to transferring them just to be on the safe side). After a few days of normal usage, no files have disappeared.
Hi all...I have been flashing for about a year now and I need help finding a JB Rom that works correctly. I have tried a few different ones, and most won't show my pictures or music even after I followed the guides to fix these issues. So I flashed Miui JB latest Rom and its real nice, but no BLN?? So, which JB Rom is stable for you with working GPS, mms, and shows no issue with music or picture files...AND has working BLN? If I could just find a kernel that would work with the MIUI JB rom to enable BLN I would be golden...alas, I can't find one and Devil won't work. Thanks guys!
I've been on AOKP 9-20 with Devil 1.5.2 with almost no issues. The only problem I was having was a few force-closes while using the camera, although after a few reboots it seems to have gone away. I plan to flash the new AOKP build 3 later on, which people are having great results with. I was on CM10 for a long time before this and everything was working perfectly, but I came back to AOKP mainly because Devil didn't work that great with CM10 and I missed blinking notifications and better performance options.
tl;dr AOKP or CM10 are both great

Hey thanks for responding! You haven't had issues with losing pictures or music files?? They are on the sdcard but no music player can see them...same as pictures, although QuickPic seems able to pull them up...I flashed the latest CM10 nightly, no music no pics...went back to stock and worked up to AOKP nightly, same issue! Got mad and flashed Miui JB and poof everything showed! Weird! I followed some of the guides I found through search for how to fix the issue but nothing worked...no problems with this for you though??
EDIT: I clean flashed AOKP build 3 and NO music or pictures!!! Going to flash the Devil and see if that makes any difference.
Yeah I've have no issues with pictures or music on any rom I've tried, however I'm no longer using the sd card that came with the phone. I had an issue mounting the sd card when I originally started flashing my phone (I had zero issues with the card before that time) and decided right away to buy a better sd card before flashing anything else. I ended up getting a 32GB class 10 which has been flawless. So basically the only thing I could think might be going on might be related to the sd card failing, especially if you're still using the junky one they give you with the phone initially.

LOL I tried that too. I honestly did everything I could think of or every tweak I found...that's why I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a JB rom that did not have this issue. It's cool though, I started using Google Music...transferred my music onto my pc and uploaded to Google music site. Then every time I update AOKP, I just will get the app and it will download the music to my cell. Not a perfect solution but it's tolerable! As far as pix, as long as I use Quick Pic they show up just fine. Of course I have to use a third party camera app since the AOKP camera won't work since gallery isn't. Thanks for any help!
I remember there being an issue with rom manager creating a .nomedia 'hidden' file:::: here is from a post of what I did to fix that issue::
Yep I was having this issue too,,, yesterday I had tried clearing the gallery cache and data,,, today I 1st tried clearing the media storage cache and data,,, hoping maybe just possibly that would help ... but it didn't... Also Tried both of my SD Rescan widgets, but neither worked ... so I uninstalled the ROM manager update which took me from 5.0.1.5 and asked me if I wanted:: " to replace this app with the factory version " which I clicked ""OK"" and that put it back to version 5.0.1.1 ,,,
then I cleared :: media storage,,, gallery,,, and Apollo :: cache and data ,,, and rebooted .... wallaha!!! gallery shows properly!!... THANKS everyone ,,,
,,,may have been slightly overkill but I what the heck,, just in case gallery and Apollo had anything hanging around ...
Now you were saying that when you flashed MUIU everything worked? I wonder if you could pull the Camera.apk from that rom and install it on AOKP to see if it'll work
I'm having the exact same issue.

Same issue here, happened a couple of cm10 nightlies ago. Never had a problem before, there were no reports of it happening to others but only a few of my pictures loaded, no music was recognized, neither were my custom ringtones, or videos. ODINed back to stock and it carried back to that... no idea how to fix it... although I think it is an sd card issue, the phone just isn't recognizing there being media on the card or only partially. Namely because if I pull the ringtone from sd and place in the ringtone folder in /system they appear. Tried just about everything, specially after hearing about the Rom Manager issue with .nomedia's being placed were it shouldn't have.
Other things I've noticed is that, an app like Root Explorer can access my sd and recognize the files inside to which I can select and use, but even after opening the picture/song/video they still don't show up in their respective apps. Also note, I have reformatted my sd card and ODINed back to stock to start over with no luck in either. I've since installed Rom Manager with no luck either.

Hmm I wonder? But how would that have any effect on the music part of it? Honestly I can live without the stock camera and gallery, its the fact that all my music is missing is the worst part...
Does MUIU have it's own music player? I never used it, so I don't know. If it does, take the apk from the rom and put it on AOKP to see if your music shows up. I wonder if this is just a glitch that hasn't been addressed simply because not that many people have encountered it. Perhaps this is a big enough issue to be posted in the general Q&A forums? Maybe that way you'll get more views and possibly better answers from people on other devices that may have got this bug.
I believe JB puts something on the sd card so ics and below won't show all of the media. I went back to JB and everything shows up fine.

Yup, that's exactly how mine is...I can see the files on root explorer or if I usb to pc but no matter what app I use to play music it says no music found on sdcard. I've used rescan app, moved onto pc and then formatted sd, blah blah. Nothing works. Oh well, it isn't enough to make me leave AOKP...I just work around it and wait for a fix I tried cm10 nightly, cm10 8/19, and a few others...same issue. Also if I use an mp3 downloader it will complete the download but when I try to play the song, it's NOT found! Crazy. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
using steves sept 27 build of aokp with devil 1.6 is my favorite and daily driver right now. only issue thats a serious problem is if you turn it on while its off and plugged in charging, it has a SOD or completely dies when i lock the screen. simple fix, turn on, as soon as you see samsung logo plug it in. this also fixes having no soft keys if you get that every now and then. no issues with with the gallery, camera, music or anything. i always odin back to GB stock and then go forward with THS build 2 of ics, then JB, then google apps and boot, restart to recovery then flash the kernel. im seriously impressed with this build

can you actually access and open the files if you mount the sd card in your computer? dont quote me but im betting on the sd card being near the end of its life
You think? Its just weird since if i flash anything else recent JB it all shows up fine...it started when i went from cm10 8/19 build (from rootzwiki) to the cm10 nightlies on the cyanogen site...and persists if i go back to stock and flash up to aokp JB or JB whatever. Then as soon as i flash the newest jb miui --whomp there it is! Strangest issue ever.

It could be a coincidence but it wouldn't hurt to try swapping SD cards if you have another laying around. They're also dirt cheap on amazon now too
Did you try this? Found it doing some google searching

This trick didn't work for me. So, I did what the system should have done with the .nomedia file present. I moved all of my photos to a hidden folder (with a . before the name) and removed the DCIM folder. Then, I looked for all instances of the .nomedia file (Root Explorer helped) and deleted them. Rebooted the phone. Started Gallery. Waited for 10 minutes. Voila! Gallery showed every little image file that was on /sdcard. To remove the files that I didn't want to see, I copied the .nomedia file from a random system folder and pasted it into all the folders that I didn't want indexed. Strangely though, moving even one of the original /sdcard/DCIM/Camera files from the hidden folder into the current Camera folder took Gallery down. Stranger that this also made the Internal Storage show a blank window when I connected the phone to my laptop. Almost positive that this has to do with JellyBean creating a /storage/sdcard0 folder that's linked to the older /sdcard folder. Looking it up and will post updates if I find any.
Update: The same trick works for Paranoid Android's JellyBean ROMs (even the latest 2.13) for the Galaxy Nexus. Something to do with the DCIM folder and how it is handled by Media Storage. A Linux-geek friend of mine confirms this has to do with the /sdcard0 symlinking. Although, why we need something like that is beyond my limited knowledge of the OS.

Yes a root explorer and look for all those hidden .nomedia files and delete those ,,, and copy over an alternate .nomedia that was not associated with the sd card,,, that was one of them tricks
