you also have to delete the 'install-recovery.sh' file at /system/etc, don't forget that step!
what version of cwm?
One second...... might of jumped the gun here
i'm using 5.0.2.0 installed from Rom Manager. I've never heard of deleteing that file, unless you use Rom Racer.

I am using rom manager and i dont even get the option of backing up roms...nor the ability to turn off protection on packages ect..
i just tried deleting the install-recovery.sh (rather i renamed it, so i could get it back. And still no cwm after restart? Any other ideas? Did i do something wrong there?
ok...so nothing that you guys suggested works...I have no idea how to get CWM to work fully....now i am stuck with the lame motoblur...yay..
Are you guys 1000% sure you're rooted?
1000%, i have super user app, and i run titanium backup. Everything gets granted root just fine that ask for it.
---------- Post added at 12:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:36 AM ----------
strange thing happened. I deleted Rom Manager application. I redownloaded it. It already detected that i was on latest clockwork recovery 5.0.2.0, but i went ahead and flashed it anyways. I then restarted with volume down. I picked "Android Recovery" and it worked just fine. Booted right into cwm!!!! every subsequent time - it doesn't boot into CWM (it boots into what must be motorola's recovery menu).
Wow! That's so odd! I'm glad you found a way to work it at least once though, even if you have to reinstall Rom Manager every time to work it, hopefully this thread is still on page 1 when the experts wake up!
But that is going to suck if i have to reinstall it everytime to use it. i feel like if I can't get into from startup it would be too risky to put any rom on my phone. If i got into a boot loop or something, it seems like i would be so screwed.
After that file has been removed, reflash CWM and it should work. At least that's what got me going.
That did it. Delete the file then reflashed. Awesome. Thanks Guys!
I'm just a noob, mobileweasel helped the most (too bad i'm limited to 5 thanks a day, it's 1:18am here and i've used them up already )
I haven't even got the phone yet but i'm still trying to learn about it and hopefully, help others along the way too See you around!
Well guys the most i can say on this one is, I had somewhat the same problem my first time around. Except mine said, failed to boot 2 starting rsd mode.
the problem that i was having was that i hadn't unlocked my bootloader, which i found that if you want the most recent rom builds, you need to have an unlocked bootloader. there is a sticky for it in the android development section. still should be first thread. says Pudding.
take a look at that. as i thought i had everything ready to go when i got my atrix. i was wrong but a couple of the atrix guru's got me set straight and working with recovery and roms within ten minutes.
any questions, go ahead and PM me and i will give you what help i can. the atrix was the first device to elude me especially since now instead of tefnars recovery we actually have a full working cwm.

So for that, I thanked you ! That's what we are all here for anyway. I just happened to be a couple days ahead of you.
Hi guys,
I used this method to root my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Everything seems to work fine, and i just installed my first rom (ginger mod), i would like to ask you:
1. Every time i install a new rom, i'll do a wipe for secerity reasons, but by doing this, how come everything i had on the phone doesn't dissapear, like pictures? Doesn't wipe mean factory reset = remove everything on the phone?
2. Every time i install a new rom, does the older one get removed automatic or do they stay left on the phone, if so how do i remove the old stuff?
3. I know this may sound stupid, but do i have the same root every time i install new rom? Because i noticed when i install new rom and i went i to recovery mode i see new color on the Meny, that's normal?
4. Which app is good for beginners to start with, like Rom's and doing backup, which of these should i purchase: titanium backup, rom manager P, rom toolbox P.
thanks guys,
1. Internal SD card data remains. Can't tell you why it just does.
2. Old Rom is replaced. No need to remove it.
3. Each Rom has its own kernel. That kernel may or may not be rooted.
4. Titanium backup. Also do backup via CWM.

Thank you for the quic answers,
1. when you're talking about the CWN, do you mean the one in the Rom manager?
2. So each rome, has their own root theme if i understood this correctly, so i don't need to worrie about re-rooting the device or something like that, because each rom has their own theme and meny?
3. which rom do you use and why, do you think that ginger-mod is good?
thanks again.

CWM not rom manager CWM is the modified recovery menu or CWM app .

No not all custom roms are rooted

One you did a backup with your ClockWorkMod recovery, you can experiment as much as you wish. You can go with various TouchWiz-based roms. You can try CyanogenMod or MIUI, which are completely different. And if you don't like them, just restore the backup.

1.Ok guys, i soon understand everything. I never did a backup on any roms. Here's the deal. When i first rooted the device, i used this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
2.I also got the CWM app with this root, and superuser( which i dont know what this do), but now when i installed Ginger-mod, suddenly i don't have the CWM app anymore, which i guess is normal?
3.So please can you explain this for me. Lets say i have ginger-mod now, but i decide i want to install CM7 now, but before i do this, i'll have to do a backup of the ginger-mod if something goes wrong with the CM7, am i right so far?
So i'll have to install this CWM app (where i find it?) and make a backup, and then try a new rom. But if i make a wipe before installing new rom, wont the CWM app dissapear or something like that? Or if i install new rom again, will the CWM app be gone again?
I know my English grammer isn't that great, but i'll hope you understood me anyway.
thanks again

The CWM app is a manager for the ClockWorkMod-recovery. The ClockWorkMod-recovery is a replacement for the stock Android-recovery. You enter the recovery by shutting your device down, holding volume-up and home and then pressing the power-button until you see the galaxy s2 logo. The CWM-app does not give you root-rights, in fact, it requires root-rights to work properly.
The SuperUser app gives you the root-rights. On OS' like Linux (and of course Android) there is one user called "root" (or superuser). He is basically what the Administrator was for Windows before Vista, having full access to everything.
The superuser-app manages what apps get root-permissions. You'll notice when it happens, because whenever an app wants to gain root-permissions, you'll see the superuser-app popping up and asking you if this is OK.
The fact that you don't have the CWM-App is no problem, as it just manages the recovery. The recovery itself does not need additional apps to be installed.

Enter the cwm-recovery (already said how you do this). You'll find various menus. One of them is the "Backup and Restore"-menu. You'll just create a backup to your internal or external sdcard (as you wish). When it is completed (without errors), you can safely flash any other rom. If you want to come back, you just enter cwm again and restore the backup.
You don't have to create a backup, but it's always good to have one of a working system.

As I already said, you don't need the app. If your kernel does not provide it (it's just not there from the start), live with it. Everything you do in this app will just start the cwm-recovery anyway.
The ClockWorkMod-recovery is the "standard" for custom-roms. You can be sure that, if you flash another rom, it will have it too. And if your Rom does not come with CWM (like a stock-rom), you can just flash a kernel with cwm again (like Siyah).
Hope this clears things up for you. If you have any more questions (even if you think they're stupid) ask us here. It's better to ask twice, than to break something.

thank you, you explained everything perfect. I think i can manage figure out the rest by my self. Just one last question:
I noticed to good programs, and where you also could do a backup for your rom's and much more:
# Rom manager (Premium)
# Root toolbox (Pro)
Which one of these would you suggest for a beginner friendly UI and settings, do you use one of these?
thanks, and happy new year.
You don't need them. The ROM-manager is just an app like the cwm-app. It handles your ClockWorkMod-recovery. It does nothing itself. Once you click create backup, your phone will reboot into the ClockWorkMod-recovery, which will do the job.
However for the ROM-manager to work, you need to install the ClockWorkMod-recovery that shops with it. Just stick with the version of your kernel. This avoids confusion.
Besides that the ClockWorkMod-recovery is beginner-friendly. Just don't touch any options, you don't know what they do.
I recommend you to get a kernel with the latest recovery. The Siyah-kernel. It is compatible to practically every ROM out there. Just reflash the kernel after you flash a ROM.

You have been veryhelpful, i've learned a few things now thanks to you. Just some last questions then i'm fine.
1. I've downloaded Siyahkernal from his website http://www.gokhanmoral.com/ and as you see, i can choose between TAR, and Zip (download), which one of them is it that i put under the PDA in Odin? Or it doesn't matter which i download?
2. So after every Rom install i make, i install Siyah-kernal, let's say i installed Ginger-Mod, and this mod has Darkknight kernal, and now i install Siyah, will Siyah replace the other kernal, or will those 2 stick with eachother?
3. Just so i don't make any misstakes, installing kernal, is like installing root for the first time right? Meaning = 1, Put phone into download mode. 2.Put the kernal file in PDA 3. Press start?
4. I've noticed that there's a new version av Siyah 2.6.4, is this stable, and have he released it for download yet, because i couldn't find it?
Thanks for every answer you giving me. I feel much safer allready =).

REPLACE

YES

No idea read the siyah thread .
No point asking is anything stable its development forum and as 2.6.3 was only released two days ago i guess not .
Stable = stock .
Once you start you have to be prepared for problems though 90% do not have a problem some do .
Rooting or Custom rom voids warranty .

I started to notice another problem.
Sometimes CWM wont recognize my external SD, example: I have put kernal, and roms in it, and when i want to flash these, i only get "no files found". And sometimes it work, but often it wont.
What can i do about this?
Sometimes cwm mistakes the internal for the external. Just take the other option.
Besides that, better update to Siyah 2.6.4. The ClockWorkMod there is more reliable.

Yes I have searched, yes I have tried google and yes I am still stuck...
I *think* I have tried just about everything and I have read through about 10 "soft brick" or "stuck on samsung screen after rooting on stock ICS" (and most combinations of) but nothing is working. I'm sure it's probably an easy fix but I just can't seem to get anywhere. Here's what happened.....
I googled rooting galaxy not after ICS update and found this http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...y-note-sgh-i717-icsgingerbreadeasiest-method/
It was all I could find about rooting after the ICS OTA update, so I did it. Everything seemed fine. I had CW but no superuser so I DL it from the market as well as my old Titanium pro from back when I rooted my HTC. I rebooted my phone to get it all settled in and decided to run Titanium and get this party started. I got an error message that busybox was not installed so.... I installed it but when I clicked the app on my phone it said it would not install because I didn't have root access.... This is where the confusion starts to set in.
So I restarted to see if I could get into CW but when I rebooted the soft brick started.... I was stuck at the "samsung" screen.
I IMMEDIATELY ran to XDA and began my search. I can still get to DL mode, Odin and CW so I know there is hope. I tried the files listed in the "All in one guide for noobs" and the "Galaxy Note Super Everything Thread (I717)".
There was a suggestion to use Kies but when I put in my serial # and model name i get the "galaxy note does not support initializing" message.
I'm not new to flashing/rooting, although things are a bit different, I have a basic understanding of the process but I ain't no Einstein either...
I also tried to flash the stock Telus ICS rom but I got an error message and my lil droid guy went belly up....
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love my note and this is killing me...
I have to go to work so if I don't reply immediately its because I have no email access at work.... Especially without my Note....
The steps are correct in the link you gave.
Did Odin3 say success?
Did you get CWM installed?
Did you flash superuser?
Is there a superuser icon in your apps?
Ranger is on it....
I'm thinking we dont have CWM on the device....????
And no SU flash, from within the recovery that doesnt exist....g
He has cwm, he did not flash superuser, Looks like he assumed flashing cwm would automatically root him.
Since you can get into recovery... i would just go ahead and download a Rom zip, transfer to phone by mounting in cwm (mounts and storage if you didn't know) and flash that sumbitch
Oh yep...found that.......Thanks brother....g
That means do or redo steps 13 to 16 in the guide you posted.
agreed....g
im back...
Just got in, thanks for the replies.
Yes I have CWM and can access it. I have tried to flash the CM roms as well as the stock telus ICS rom but was denied at install. I got a "assert failed getprop (ro.build.device)" message and 2 other "ro." error messages when I install the cm nightly quincyatt rom.

Yup, thats the one I flashed, its working and I get a successful message when I flashed SU so I assume its there also. Any recommendations of a rom to try and flash? Still hanging at the samsung screen.....
I appreciate the help by the way, I know how frustrating it can be to try and help with tech situations from emails and messages (Hi Mom ).
Thanks has been pushed....
That assert error is in the script used by CWM to flash and it is saying 'wrong rom for your device'. So for sure you have the correct CWM and rom for your phone? Just checking because errors at this point make your phone useless.

Okay... so I flashed the stock ATT with odin. just at start screen now.... Don't think it is rooted so now.... How do I get back to telus and root right the first time?
Edit: so it appears the ATT rom was a GB ver so I am assuming that I was somehow reverted to GB instead of my stock ICS. Now to try and flash a stock Telus GB rom, update then try to root.... AGAIN! Thank gawd I don't have a $600 paperweight now!

Hi everyone. This is my first post...anyways, been playing around with a gt-i9100 and have flashed many ROMs successfully. The latest (and best) being slim saber. I THOUGHT it was soooo easy! Haha! Wrong! Recently flashed the experimental cm11. Did the customary cwm backup, wiped cacheband partition, formatted, and wiped dalvik. Installed and Booted up fine. From reading that thread I'm experiencing the same common problems. The two worst are the battery level is out of whack and cwm can't read the SD card or micro SD. Smaller problems include can't adjust screen brightness and any apps on SD get deleted after reboot. Other smaller issues also. The overall speed is great and battery life is better than 4.3 ROMs.
Now, the real problem...because cwm can't read SD, I can't go reinstall my backup, which was my plan. Unable to flash new because downloads also go to sd, which is unreadable. Performed a backup of the current rom and its going to the phone memory. Is there anyway to move my nanadroid backup or new ROM there so cwm can see it and I can flash or any other suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Man Jim, u gonna hate me lol. Unfortunately apolo 6.1 is a zip file, and as far as my research has gone, no way to convert it to tar for odin flash. any other suggestions? I think the only way might be to revert to stock and root again like bhavstech recommended. I'm not desperate, as it is still usable and I have another phone so I'll wait a while and hope someone can enlighten me...thanks!

LOL - I forgot!! I think there is a tar file for 4.1 - use that, or use latest dori (either 8.43 or 9.43) it doesn't matter which because you will be re installing your back up which will have its own recovery img.
Hope this helps :cyclops:

Hey Jim I got it fixed using dori! Funny because the latest 4.4 addressed both of my major issues...stubborn me decided to try it out and I gotta say its pretty good! Stable but just a few broken apps and small issues. Gonna five it a try as a daily driver...thanks again!!!!
use odin to flash tar and then install and older rom which is functional with the sdcard. and then flash back your backups.

Well, you are supposed to post stuff like this in the Q&A forum, that's why you have to post 10 times. To learn the structure.
You could try to clear data for play services and the play store app and see if that works. If not, I suggest that you try to flash some other gapps package.
Maybe one of these:

same here, have to download the nightly through browser
the cmupdater has not been working since i started with 403. download through pc or browser
try cyandelta
Just go through the browser. What I did and no problem.
So just download the new nightly and reflash?
Do I need to wipe cache or something?
What if I want to go from nightly to stable or M, then I need to wipe?
Thanks for the help

No, just flash the update zip. (That's called a dirty flash in case you didn't know)
If you use custom kernels, flashed mods or custom system apps, they might have to be reinstalled. You also need to reinstall Xposed Framework from the app if you use that.
But remember to back up your phone in recovery before you update!
Okay thanks. 3 last questions (I hope).
I got cm-11-20140410-NIGHTLY
And yesterday released cm-11-20140411-NIGHTLY
Is this an update? Or a completely new nightly? sorry for all the ignorance, I'm totally new to this and android
2. Should I use old M builds or new nightlys? Which one Is more stable
3. If I want to flash M build and I'm currently using nightly, there is a different way or something special I need to do?
If you're going from an m build to a nightly, or any other variation (stable to m, etc) then wipe data and cache. Every nightly can be flashed on top of itself. There are more specific things to be said but I'll leave it at that so you don't get yourself bootlooped.
Make sure you make a nandroid before you do anything (I.e. a backup in custom recovery) and it would be a good idea to put that on your pc. Also a good idea to have the files and setup ready to flash your phone back to factory with kdz or tot--that way if you do something boneheaded you won't be in as much of a panic. It definitely wouldn't hurt to have some experience with adb ahead of time--just in case.
If none of that makes sense I'd wait a bit before flashing (though you could go for it and probably make out fine).

- nandroid BackUP - Check. i learned how importent and how lucky to do a nandroid backup when i flashed yesterday the cm. bricked my phone 2 times, thanks to nandroid backup didnt need to flash stock.
- stock KDZ - Check. including flashing tool and all that.
what do you prefer, nightly or M? the nightly can go rough just like that in the middle of everything?
