new update ? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello every one
i recently rooted my phone which it has i9300XXALF2 firmware and after a few days it seems to have an OTA update exactly 74.44 MB , after downloading the update , when i reboot the phone it goes to 30% and aborts with an < ! > mark on an android robot.when it restarts and i go to the software update it says that update did not installed and i can download the update again.
so i tried to flash to stock rom, then again i get the same update which does happen the same thing again.
I tried kies too but it says that my firmware is up to date.
i have wiped cach and all data and reset to factory several times but everything the same...
does anyone know what's going on ?
Is it possible that rooted phones dont get official updates any more ?
many thanks for you responses.

Whats going on as per the thousands of exact same questions OTA has failed due to ROOT .

Get the latest official ROM from either a sticky-thread in the General Section or on http://samfirmware.com
Then flash it through Odin. (No data loss caused by a simple upgrade!)
You'll need to re-root your device again since upgrading always reverts root and all system-modifications.

Does rooted mb get OTA update? I have also same version but lots og bug in it..so can anybody help to get ride of that bugs.

Yes but it may not install .
Update by flashing stock rom via Odin dont mess with Samsung update methods .

at last ...
after a lot of flashing and doing the same thing about 12 times! i finally succeeded ! and downloaded the update
the new version is XXLFB
... anyway i dont know but it's very weird because i did the same things for flash and updating by my wifi and it succeeded after 12 th time !
things i felt about this firmware :
-automatic brightness added in upper (floating) menu
-more control over sound
-1 mb decrease in total amout of ram from 780 to 779 !
-more responsive browser (scrolling in two axis at the same time) >> the thing that i could barely do in XXLF2
-gps locks a bit faster
-messaging interface is changed and moved in the middle of screen
-faster gallery and a bit whole interface

Congrats for finally joining the lfb club. A few weeks later than any of us using custom roms but still =)

Will root be romoved if updated using kias (pc)?

Will doing an update from kias from pc, basically I think its a firmwire update, will it remove root from my phone?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
If you're rooted kies won't let you update. You would have to unroot and then upgrade with kies which is probably not worth the hassle as the custom roms on xda are probably far better than what is available on kies.

Its my first android phone, and I hear cyanogen does not fully support SGS2 yet, and that it does not have hardware acceleration. So if ice cream sandwich is released, how can I update? I heard 2.3.6 or 5 is already out for SGS2.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Most of the custom roms on xda are 2.3.6. Cyanogen will probably release ics first and then you will see it appear on xda. There are a couple of ics developer leaks but they are buggy. It could be as late as April before you see an official release mybe longer for some carriers.

Why ? My SGS2 rooted using zergrush method connects flawlessly to Kies, and software version is displayed correctly. I think that if phone is only rooted and not flashed with some PDA/PHONE/CSC combination that is unknown for KIES it can be upgraded this way, but of course root will be lost, so IMHO Mobile Odin with everroot will be far better way.
@marcadam: wat is ics?
@slig: wat is everroot? Is it like u wont loose root ever again? How do I get that?
Sorry im still kinda new to android, after days of research I found n used cfroot to root my fone... Didnt try any other sort of hack yet...
Thanks alot both of u...

1. Root will be lost, if you flash a new rom (unless its a non-wipe rom)
2. ICS(Ice Cream Sandwich) is the newest android version, also called "Android 4.0".
3. "Mobile Odin with everroot" he mentioned is an app that is installed on your phone, wich does exactly the same as the flashing Software(Odin) on your computer, wich you used, to flash a custom rom.
4. I don't suggest, updating with Kies, because many people reported, that it bricked their phones.
I suggest, that you flash CWM(Clockworkmod Recovery) on your phone, and use that(Its the most popular way to update/flash/backup/restore a ROM).

Is it possible to flash stock Samsung roms via CWM ? I thought that CWM is for flashing customs, original stocks can be flashed only by Odin (or Kies).
If the rom is made for flashing with CWM then yes. (Most rom's are made for flashing with CWM) if you can't find a cwm compatible stock version, then i can upload you one I made(newest stock version 100% stock).

No you lose nothing in KIES and dependant upon codes you may even get an update .
But why root unless an app requires root .

Morning guy's, I've just had an update come through but installation has failed, I suspect it's due to CWM being installed, any tips regarding this?

No setting for Brightness after update
Hey all,
An update came through for the OS, and now I'm on 4.0.4. That setting for Brightness is now gone, but my browser is still dark. I've looked through all browser settings and all over the OS settings and nothing seems to make it bright again. Any thoughts?

How to get rid of OTA update without installing it?

A bit of a nooby question, but I've never come across it or had to do it before.
I know I could flash a custom ROM but nothing quite stands out just yet, waiting for S3 USA release. There should be a lot more action on the ROM side then.
But at the moment I'm on stock, rooted and woke up with an update on my phone yesterday. From what I've read there's 2 updates 1 after the other and 1's a new kernel. I'd rather not update and root again if there's a simple way of removing the update e.g. like say delete a file from somewhere. After all my phone's running 100% as is.
Anyone know the answer? Its bugging me now, you can only perspone it for 3 hours at a time.
If I don't get rid of it by tomorrow I'm going to reaserch if i can just update over a rooted stock ROM. Find out about the new kernel build make sure I can root after updating and reluctantly update.
Thanks in advance
Marc

I have the same problem and can't get rid of the OTA update available message, if you find a solution then please post.
Many thanks!!
download the 'update' from sammobile.com it's the LF2 rom, install with mobile odin and tell it to keep root.... problem solved
I just used titanium backup to delete the updater. Seems to be working fine for now.

i think that ICS is your stock...if you want to go back to GB you'll have to perform some hi-teching a bit

All he would have to do is go to www.sammobile.com and download a stock firmware and flash through Odin. Do not use repartition or pit files and you should be fine

As the other guys said, you may have the stock ics already on your phone when you bought it. And hard reset won't affect the android version as it only erases the data, settings or even files on your phone. You could check www.sammobile.com or look for threads here which contains stock Gingerbread and you need to flash it through odin, the high tech way

[Q] GT-i9300, If rooted , cant have OTA update?

My phone is GT-i9300, original stock ROM is ICS, and i have update to JB through OTA which give me XXDLJ1.
Then I root my phone by :-
1. download mode, flash CF auto root via Odin.
2. restart, install Triangle Away and reset the flash counter back
I just want to have root.
So, the question is, why I'm getting "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
If root , then can not check for OTA update anymore?
Or is there any other way? To have root only and everything else like just stock and can check/download OTA again in the future.
Thanks in advance XDA

Thats right.
But if youre on xda why do you want the OTA update anymore? Just flash a stock rom, update via odin as and when a new stock rom is available and root each time.

Thats a question that I was about to ask. . I'm having a few problems with my S3, and I want to correct them but I need root.
I also want to keep it stock, I was a flash addicted with my previous phone, but now I don't have time and I just want something that works, and I want also to be able to check for updates. .
Looking forward to more replies.

As I understood, you won't get OTA updates if rooted whereas you can get updates via kies. Flashing them will remove root though.

Thanks for replying,
I'm coming from Galaxy S1, to S2 and now S3, and Samsung is not the same anymore for me, They really listen to the customer, and always improve their UI and apps. S3 is a solution/improvement for all S2 n S1 complaints.
So, it is really nice to see some app/mod which originate from here at first, been integrate to stock rom of s3 e.g. the toggle, n the lack of led light of s2 n s1
Btw, development means, to make something unusable to become usable,, to make something good to be better.
I think, it is really convenience to just have OTA instead need to find a PC just to hv update.
As my S2, i gain root just by flashing temp CWM recovery through stock 3e recovery n then flash root. It simple as that.

I guess it is the device status "modified". If I understood well you can only get "original" when you flash a stock rom and unroot but please correct me if I am wrong as I never went back to original state till now.

just how often do you think an OTA update is pushed out?
Just use mobile odin if you want to flash any stock roms without needing a pc. Youll get the update far quicker via xda/sammobile than waiting for an OTA one anyway
