is the xperia s worth buying? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi.
Today im using lg o2x and im thinking about a change to the xperia.
While looking in this forum i notice that there is some problem in the screen,
Is it in all the devices? Is the ics come soon?
And in the bottom line, is it worth buying?

Compared to the O2X freaking everything is worth buying. Later devices don't have screen problems and we already have ICS and will get CM9 soon.

Yep........... its really good.....
But!
1) battery life = LAME(middle usage 19-21 hours)
2)my screen wakes up in the middle of nowhere without pressing any button
Edit:1 24-29 hours with juice defender ultimate 2:fixed updating the phone

Well my o2x is a fantastic phone, not even 1 problem since i install the cm7.
Ok than battery lame, and "live" screen.
How is the browser experience and the speaker quality?

Speaker quality is really good. Browser is nice and it has WebGL which is Sony's unique patch.

I use Chrome and browser experience is good... until you visit intensive sites like The Verge which can be laggy.

Tnx.
one last question, how can i be sure that the xperia i buy wont have that yellow dots problem?

The models that have yellow display have been mostly phased out. The new ones shouldn't have any problem.

LG O2x will always have an awesome community, for modding its very hard to beat currently no matter what phone you buy next even GS3.
Reminds me of the HTC HD2 scene in scope and modding.
The modding scene will hopefully be as good for the SXS, it's quite good tho largly due to the stock Sony software experience being quite nice all round.

absolutely, yes.
Because its good looking.
And if u dont have any wired needs, Xperia S can fulfill all u life.

I just notice in youtube that the banchmark scores are low compare to the new phones.

You can't judge a phone by benchmark. Nexus 7 is another example, not the best in benchmark, but the smoothest compared to other android device. Same goes to Xperia s, smooth.

Awesome phone, Glad I got it, Screen is amazing, Really smooth on ICS, Speaker is really loud, Looks sexy, Not a bad thing to say about it really, For the first couple of days my screen seemed to have an all over yellow tint but now it's completely gone.

YES worth buying
Camera is awesome!
screen is awesome
looks awesome and unique
Powerfull device,Optimized well.

What about the buttons? I've seen some threads where people say that the buttons are very unresponsive.

Middle button is unresponsive. BUT you get used to it and realize just press a little harder and it will function. don't let the buttons drive you away from this phone. I'm current using/testing HTC ONE X International and Xperia S. So far i'm liking the Xperia S more.

Funny that you ask it here... I looooooove this phone... And the people that hated the phone are obviously not here...

Hi, I dreamed of XPERIA S, I dont like it anymore after 2 months of using, phone gets a lot of dust under back cover, screen is not that awesome as SONY says, it's not that ultra bright and colors are not that super. As for camera I'd say that my old XPERIA Arc took better pictures than this, also picture quality is not that good for 12MP. I really wouldnt buy that phone, I'd go for new Acro S.

-gets a lot of dust under back cover: use case... trust me, case will make SXS sexier..
-screen is not that awesome as SONY says: there are three types of SXS's screens. see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803723 for me it's really good. i dont why that Sony made those differences.
- As for camera I'd say that my old XPERIA Arc took better pictures than this, also picture quality is not that good for 12MP: try another camera app. i found that LG Camera takes better picture. and no! bigger megapixels dont make it better quality, it's the lens that all count for quality.and i found out that SXS's lens is very good. especially in outdoor (enough lightning). and with no enough lightning (which i havent found any phone that make good quality photo in low lightning), Photoshop will do the trick.

Trying hard not to go back to Arc after 5 days with S

It's been a struggle for me from day one to like Xperia S after using Arc for a very long time. Performance wise there are no issues with S.
Out the box it did have the WOW factor. My friend got white and I went with black and I personally liked white and I wish I ordered it.
Why I want to get back to Arc?
1. I don't know how much longer it takes me to get it but those capacitive buttons need to be pressed couple of times for me. Especially the back button. I don't know if it's because I am a lefty. But even other buttons, I seem to have to try second, third time and it only gets worse in total darkness.
2. The design doesn't look as nice as in pictures. Feels like an HTC phone. It only looks cool on the back side.
3. The USB flap is a joke and it definitely won't last long for me.
4. The bottom bezel is just too wide as I expected.
5. Front camera doesn't look well designed. You can see metal petals around it making it look like a rushed design.
6. Just too thick after enjoying the sleek curvy Arc.
7. Wish ICS around the corner I think Sony rushed this product which is mostly designed for Android 2.3.7. There is no need for those Capacitive buttons when I don't find they need spot on touch. It's like hitting a bull-eyes for me with back button.
Some Pros
1. Camera responsiveness is amazing.
2. Sleep SE UI which I love and can be had on Arc as well.
3. Transparent strip is super cool design idea. I might actually consider Xperia P after I read user reviews.
Give it a 2nd thought
Aren't u being a little bit harsh on the device
U may be right with some things about the design but it doesn't make it horrible to ditch it that soon...
- the capacitive buttons could be handled by doing a slide motion on it and that gives a dynamic more comfortable move and would be a lot easier for u than righties
- the design is more than awesome, yes not like the arc but it's really neat and every model has to be different than the other, that's life, and so what it's like htc (amazing devices)
- the flap is useful for making the device more sleek and avoiding dirt which ruins most devices in the future, and it is durable and not that fragile as u think, it will last don't worry
- the bottom bezel is nothing of any concern, i advice u not to look at the bottom!
- u may be right about the front camera but not that obvious and could be tolerated
- the thick design makes it more sturdy and well fitted design to hold in hand!
- ICS is not so far away from now, and being it not present out the box is to make u appreciate the device more well in every aspect after the upgrade!!
IMO, enjoy this magnificent phone and look at its bright side and the many more pros of this master piece!!

I got the white one and it looks nicer than video and no where close to HTC. This is much more solid that the arc and it looks nice in front (maybe since I have the white one I can see the contrast of black screen with white bezel).

isn't it as wide as upper part of the phone? If you are saying it is long then its because of that transparent part and whatever is inside that bottom. I wish they could do something about it but one issue I had with arc was that bezel is very low and I would hit stuff on screen all the time for no reason. Not to give credit to long bezel on Xperia S. maybe little bit shorter than this.
5. Front camera doesn't look well designed. You can see metal petals around it making it look like a rushed design.

I would rather to illuminate the buttons on screen and only use the capacitive buttons instead to give more room to screen itself.

Happy to have Xperia S in white.
Thanks for your review.
Noticed the button response when looking at it in store. Right handed and found it a little unresponsive to my touch. Design is super cool though. Just wish they had waited and released shipped with ics. Looks promising, worries me the amount of them that have been damaged by people, just dropping a small height.

Build quality is way better than Arc. I just played with my friends white Xperia S again and the bottom bezel doesn't feel long mainly because of the white bezel contrasting from the black screen/glass part of the phone. Looks like I might actually sell black and get back on white. I did this same crap with my Arc. Rushed for Silver from Japan and sold to only get the darker one

After using Arc for so long and now S and with Galaxy Nexus for few weeks, 4" sounds tiny these days . I hate cases but I might just consider one for S. Few more weeks with the phone and I believe the sensitivity of the buttons will probably get better due to Muscle Memory
I have just got my xps it is great no issues at all
Everything is perfect I dont know why people are unhappy dont they know what they want out of the handset I do I am a powrr user this phone is the best out there and it is sony u cant go wrong people

So go back then.
I don't know why you feel you should like this phone, taste is subjective. If you don't like it, send it back and stick with the Arc or buy something else.
Don't know where you are or how your bought the device but in the EU the distance selling regulations allow for return within 7 days (apart from damage/misuse obviously) even if you just change your mind. Assuming you ordered online, just do that.

ATRIX user opinions

Hey guys ! I own a HTC EVO 3D right now, but I'm going to switch it for an ATRIX 4G tomorrow.
I want to ask you... How do you feel about the ATRIX's screen? I know it's a TFT LCD with the RGBW matrix, which is what makes my brain twist and say "OH SH*T NO". What's your say on that?
Also... voice quality... Is it loud & clear enough? I mean, compared to other phones you might have owned...
And the camera?
-----
And... most of all... the chipset?! How is it going for you?! I hear it is actually less performant & more power-hungry than Qualcomm's dual core, but I don't really know...
awh its a great phone......but stock gb rom sucks. u wud love it if you are a social networking fan!! for me im pretty happy with my cm flavored atrix. the chip is good, camera is okay.....and about sound i dont give huge scores! display hmmm u shud love it!!

This whole weekend I've been going back and forth, deciding to trade it for an ATRIX, then changing my mind and returning to HTC... Now I was sure I was gonna make the switch, but here I go again, returning to HTC.
The ATRIX's screen is TFT, as opposed to HTC's S-LCD, and that wouldn't be THAT MUCH of a problem if it didn't had the RGBW matrix... I read a lot on the phone, and that would just ruin my experience, probably making me feel the urge to blend the phone or something.
I think I'll stick to HTC... If only Motorola were to use standard RGB...
good luck

as you are concerned about the screen, maybe i can help a little. first off, i have really great eyesight, pentile matrix displays make me want to hurt people, but its not all bad. the qHD resolution makes the subpixles much harder to see, i personally can only see them when its about a foot or closer to my face, some colors i can see it farther away, such as green, i can see some distortion about a foot and a half away form my face. but its very hard to see, its a HUGE difference form say, a captivates pentile screen.
next thing to keep in mind is the colors. yellow is a big complaint, i dont notice it to much but the colors are far from perfect, i feel the screen is a hair cold by default, and there are ways to reduce the blue if you are rooted, i did a guide on it a while ago.
last thing is gradients, they look bad, that is the only thing i really am disappointed with, you can see artifacting as the colors shift, although i dont know if im crazy but it seems better then before.
keep in mind that all of these things you will get use to with a little time, i got use to them quickly and i am a stickler for screen quality. one of the goods of the screen though is the battery life, the type of display saves a ton of juice thus making one of the longest lasting phones of its time. now that, I love.
im not trying to bash my own phone here, i love it, and always will, its an amazing device and was everything i wanted when i got it. the screen is something i can live with, and the the battery life plus the higher resolution makes up for it in my book.
let me know if there is anything else you want to know, hope i was a little helpful.

I do a lot of reading on my phone, and having that screen would kill me... Plus the gradients thing... I noticed it in a 480p YouTube video, ffs, lol.
The battery is all nice, the chipset seems good enough, but even though the screen is all bright in the sun, its downs are making me wanna throw rocks at it, lol.

It's hard for me to answer this.
I loved the EVO 3D. The back design made it attractive, and the overall body... it was nice, alright. Also, the big screen was neat.
There were a few things that made me change the phone. The screen was somewhat yellowish (had to use Filter Your Screen to add a blue alpha so it would not be so yellowish on white menus and so brownish on gray menus - but that still didn't fix it 100%). The earpiece was creaky, and so was the loudspeaker on maximum volume...
I wanted the ATRIX for it has a bigger battery, a decent chipset, and a more robust design. I mean... the body is more compact - feels better in the hand, more secure, I'd say. Besides, on this phone I no longer feel the urge to smash it on the wall for yellow whites or creaky voices in-calls.
Also, the screen is just AMAZING. Even though it's a TFT, and it's got PenTile, I find it really nice. The whites are PURE WHITE. The blacks are BLACK!!! Also, if you know that ICS wallpaper... it really looks better on the ATRIX. The colors were somewhat washed on the EVO 3D - proof that S-LCD still needed work. To be honest, I think this TFT screen can be compared to the Samsung Galaxy S's SUPER AMOLED.
Even if I turn down the screen's brightness to the minimum, the whites still blind me during night time, especially if I hold the phone somewhat close to my face. On full brightness, in the sunlight, it ROCKS !!!
The only thing I wished for is some aluminium on the body. It's all plasticky... good thing I have an iCase Pro (MOMAX) case, otherwise... I wouldn't really like it .

Don't get me wrong... MY phone was a bad unit - about the yellowish screen. Another friend had the 3VO and it was white, but compared to my ATRIX now, the ATRIX is white and his 3VO yellow.
The creaking earpiece was also a problem that occured later - I believe some water got in, idk.
The EVO 3D is a great phone.

Nice Review. The atrix is a BEAST especially when throwing Neutrino behind it!
I came from a iPhone 4 to the Atrix a few months ago and it has it's ups and downs. My only real gripe of any consequence is the battery life. It isnt terrible, but you have to do a little tweaking (at least with CM7, I found so). I've been playing with ICS on it and so far have noticed a slight improvement in that arena. Plus ICS feels like a much nicer UI overall.
I love the size of the screen on, and I personally have found no problem with it. My main use for the phone (other than calls) is web browsing and reading using the Kindle and nook, and aldiko book readers.
And music playback of course. I have one playlist or another going most of the time if I am not talking to someone (desk job, might as well get my tune on).
My headphone jack failed a month or so after I bought the phone (used, off ebay), and while it was at Motorola getting fixed (warranty job, only paid shipping to them) I was back on my I4 for a couple weeks and I felt a lot better getting the Atrix back, and not just for Android. You just get addicted to the larger screen so easy.
My secondary gripe of any matter is the placement of the power button. Just feels very awkward to use 1 handed. But I added a wake on volume mod instead, and that problem was solved.

I hate the iPhone. Overpriced, tiny 3.5 incher... Besides, Android is much better. Otherwise I would have gotten an iPhone...
If the EVO 3D unit I had didn't had those few things that I didn't like about (malfunctions, that is), I would've sticked to it. Just letting ya know. I consider the EVO 3D above the ATRIX (in some aspects, at leasts).
But compared to the iPhone 4S... The ATRIX wins big time. Bigger battery, better CPU, bigger RAM, better/nicer OS, bigger screen... The only thing I'm concerned about is the GPU. I know it's an 8-core UltraLowPower processor, but... does it really perform as good as/better than the PowerVR's or Adreno's?! I, for one, would say no but that might be some driver-related issue, which should/might be fixed when the official ICS drops...
Im glad you liked the Atrix. Its a pretty dam nice phone, im im love with it. Very fast and smooth. qHD screens are awesome. Great battery life. Feels very nice on my hand. Nice design, IMO. Welcome to the atrix family.

Ouch, gonna have to disagree there. Nothing really beats iPhones os, its sooo simple and easy to use. Best thing about it is that they DONT need quad core, even my ipad2 runs perfect with gaming. The OS is so perfectly optimized that even with my wife's 3gs, there are only a few hiccups. The one thing that I will agree with is the 3.5 inch screen. That's too small. Imagine a 4.3 inch with that retina display....mmmm......
But these are all personal opinions, and no one will ever agree.

Nice little read and very well written. Have you had any issues with it dying on you? What about multitasking? Fiddly?

Well, thanks. Well, multitasking its really good, but some apps really use lot of RAM, so you may see some stuttering once a while. If I understood, the phone will be for your wife. Try asking her permission to root and remove some bloatware she may not use. About dying, I was kinda surprised, sometimes it stopped working and I had to reset it. I'm not sure if it was my fault of heavy usage or its some problem with it. But, if she is like most users, she will use it for some browsing, calls messages and Facebook, the phone is great. Loud and clear calls. I heavily recommend it

Sweet! thanks Felimenta97
funny my wife has a sensation and thinks my xs is ugly, typical woman lol!
to compare the 2 (both rooted on ics) i find the xs much quicker and smoother, the screen is amazing. camera not many features but picture quality is brilliant.
the only negatives, for me, about the xs are the non physical buttons take a bit of getting used to (no problem now), the power / screen lock button is in a ridiculous position (screen off & lock app solves half the problem) and because of the size of the screen not always easy to reach far corners one handed.
also battery life is slightly worse than sensation, not a huge difference, but noticeable.
so maybe take her to a store see if she likes the feel of it, because performance wise it is an amazing phone.

No need. Of course they need to be clean, but that doesn't mean you have to wash your hands everytime you will pick up the phone. If you (or she) want to do a quick clean, make your shirt a little "humid" and clean the back of the phone. Once a while, use a soft cloth.

Interested owner!

Hey I'm looking to buy the xperia s! I'm currently using the xperia play but its starting to lag out on me. Few questions tho.
1) Should I get the xperia s? Or pay around 65$ more for tje xperia sl? Is it worth for the slight speed boost?
2) Every review I've read says the android navigation buttons suck. They aren't that bad are they?
3) Coming from a smaller phone, I'm worried the xperia s might be too big in the hand. I've always hated big phones like the s3 and note, etc. 4.3 is perfect for a display size but I've heard the xperia s is extremely big considering the screen size. Should i be worried?
4) Any other useful info or comments about your experience with your xperia s!
Thank you!

Hey I was once in the same boat as you, previously owned a Play it died though... Since I bought my S I've never looked back.
1) Just get the S all you get with the Sl is a slight overclock, that's it. Not worth an extra 65$
2) No, they're very responsive for me. I think It's an aquired skill, practice makes perfect
3) I thought this too but the device fits very comfortably in my hand and the screen is amazing
4) It depends whether you plan on sticking with stock or using custom software really
Hope I helped :good:
1) SL has aluminium body, that would be my only reason to choose the SL over the S. I don't miss those 200mhz, really. But 65$ doesn't seem too much for an unlocked phone, unless if it's from say 135 to 200 (on a contract)
2) They tend to be kinda unresponsive, but I found a way to not miss, I slide my finger upwards from the transparent bar going to the screen area, pressing the button on my way up without missing. It's kinda lame when you think about it, but you get used to it, it comes naturally when navigating using the soft keys.
3) The device is actually too big for the screen size, too much bezel, specially up and down. But it doesn't feel unconfortable or anything. It's just a good size phone.
4) My only gripe is that the battery life feels too random. Some days I feel it endures a hard day of heavy usage, some other days it just dies on nothing.

1) Only if you are ready to pay 65$ extra for one of the new colors. Hardware wise it's just overclocked.
2) I don't have any problem with the keys. But I noticed when I hand my phone to other people they often need to press twice because they press really far off. (sometimes they try to press the transparent bar )
3) I had the same thought but I came from an ray (!) got used to the size within two days, now I don't want to miss it.
4) I love the s. It's fast, smooth and the display is amazing. The design is an absolute eyecatcher.
Battery isn't the strongest but it lasts the same as my ray did, and at least a full working day with a lot and lot of usage.

Why do so few people buy these phones

I guess I was in the same boat as I would never have considered a Sony smartphone in a million years. The only reason I stumbled across the 5 ii is because I was tired of having gigantic smartphones which were cumbersome to carry around. So I started looking at smaller phones and bought a Pixel 5. Overall not a bad phone, but I could never get used to the rear fingerprint scanner, and the earpiece audio quality is terrible. I hated making phone calls as I always struggled to hear what people were saying. I guess the glass screen protector didn't help.
The only other phone I could find with a small form factor with decent audio and specs was the 5 ii. Having never owned a Sony phone before I took the plunge and bought one and I can honestly say I don't regret it one bit. I actually love everything about this phone. Odd aspect ratio which actually works really well, great audio quality, headphone jack, great display, great battery life. There's nothing I don't like about it. Apart from the tap to wake that doesn't work properly!! If I had to be nit picking I would say Sony could probably put a bit more work into the standard camera app as not everyone wants to change a million settings in the pro camera app before they take a photo. Having worked my way through the pro camera app though I have managed to take some pretty decent low light photos which is impossible with the standard camera app.
So I guess we are a select few that really know how good this phone is. I am happy for now and will use this for a good while before I start itching to buy another phone.
Problem with the Sony mobile division is that they have had a pretty bad reputation in the last 5 years or so. The build quality of their phones was avarage, they didn't want to innovate and they had zero advertisement. This has changed with their latest 2 lineups, but it will be very difficult for them to get their marketshare back.
This is my first Sony and while I like their Photo Pro app very much I probably won't get another Sony unless they up the hardware, especially the screen in bright light.
not a Sony owner but I've seen both Marques Brownlee and Mr.Whostheboss say Sony don't send reviewers handsets out in any kind of time for launch day videos.
Sony waits 6 months to LOAN phones out, long enough for the moment the be passed and the reviewer to not see the point in making the video.

The only thing that I regret about my 5 II it's the camera quality...Coming from a P30 Pro I'm a little bit disappointed, even with the Camera Pro app...Gcam it's not stable, so there is no way to improve this phone...Unfortunately, I need to sell it cause I need the camera quality on my phone, and Sony disappointed me... The audio quality it's awesome, screen it's not so bright but it's looking nice, also, I love this form factor, I wish that other smartphone would have it....
I like the Photo Pro software but no one I know does. They prefer point-and-shoot with heavy AI and computational photography.

To know Sony is to hate them.
Their products I tore down were complete junk.
I dealt extensively with them 16 years ago.
They are rotten to the core.
Mind you I'm one of the few customers that has talked to a Sony VP* and gotten a full refund check from them
Look up the inventor of the Walkman and see how they screw him.
*he was a well educated, arrogant malaka who was zero help.
I don't know Sony or General Motors or any corporation. I keep watching to see one but so far, no. Now, I understand you hate the company but you had nothing to say about the Sony Xperia 5 II. Perhaps you can find a "Hate Sony" forum. I'm surprised to hear you got to know the Sony VP so well that you're familiar with his sexual habits. I'm not knocking it. To each his own.

You don't understand Greek culture well at all do you? Tough
The VP's exact words were:"I could help you, but I choose not to." Then he took the time to explain the 3 ways he could have help me in detail.
In the a midlevel manager did what the VP would not do.

Well, I'm personally a photographer and I prefer point& shoot rather than tweaking all the settings. The camera pro app it's good, but the lenses are very bad, I couldn't make a macro shot with 5 II, so I've switched to s20+ and I'm happy now
Sony like to live in the past it seems. I've owned Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola and I must say Sony handsets are solidly engineered. Though they like their old school stuff... 3.5mm jack, no wireless charging... in a SD865! It almost feels like an old retired engineer designed their phones. Good, well built, but not exactly "bells and whistles". If you want a non-fancy phone with the latest SoC, though with a high price, get a Sony. I don't regret my purchase at all.

Never had one. They look like nice phones.
Sony though is rotten to the core.
They are known to cut corners in unscrupulous ways... I've seen it firsthand.
Their stereos, cams, and multidisc players were trash 15 years ago. Had them all apart and the factory service manuals. So don't dismiss what I say too lightly.
I haven't bought any Sony products since.
Consider yourself warned
Canon, Denon make Grade A equipment on the other hand. Owned and repaired them as well.
The Sony Trinitron is a thing of beauty, you must admit. The best tube ever built in my opinion. The only time I've ever been really angered with Sony was when they removed the otherOS feature from the PS3. That was a deek move. Don't forget also that Sony manufacture the Raspberry Pi. Which I'm eternally grateful to them for, for bringing a huge industry to our beloved UK from China.

Indeed. I still have Sony Trinitron monitor.
80# of precision phosphors, 2nd to none.
For gaming and movies you can't beat the smoothness of CRT afterglow
