[Help] Nandroid restoring issues - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I have used CWM 5.8.4.5 and 5.8.4.7 in both touch and regular variants, and I have not been able to once restore my nandroid backups successfully. It ALWAYS errors our with "Error while restoring /data!" I don't touch any of the backup files or folders. I have tried this on both ext and int sd cards.
Edit: Same thing happens on Team Epic recovery too.
I'm AT&T SGS3

Been trying all day and still not working.

Bump?

Try a newer variant... 5.8.4.9 works for us sprint users and is now working with rom manager.

That one doesn't work on AT&T ones. I have tried 5.8.4.7 and still doesn't work.

I have tried this too and having the same problem

Can't boot any new flashed roms. Only restore works.

Can anyone help?
I'm not a noob, I've been flashing for years but I can't seem to get any Roms I flash to boot after. I just get stuck at the disclaimer boot screen. It stays there, no boot up.
Things I've tried, waiting of course for 10+ mins. Moving the Rom zips to internal sd then flashing. And redownloading the roms and trying again. Roms I've tried are, Meanrom and stock w Sony bravia engine.
Really sucks I can't figure out why I can't boot any new Rom flashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having this exact issue. Rooted and flashed a couple of ROMs. Backed one up and now I can't boot into any new ROMs, even stock ROMs. They flash fine in recovery but do not pass the HTC disclaimer screen.
Did you by chance select Factory Reset from bootloader with TWRP installed? When I do that it reboots into recovery and cannot mount internal storage. When I try to mount internal storage to my PC through USB it says SD is corrupt and I must format. I have a suspicion that has something to do with not being able to boot new ROMs.
Have you tried to RUU? I've tried just to see if I can get my phone to boot into anything, but I get an error updating signature. Signarure (sic) Error 132.
Something I haven't tried yet would be to flash a ROM and make a nandroid before first boot, then try restoring it to see if it boots. Might be crazy enough to work.
Please post if you manage to solve this annoying soft brick!

No 4G data connection

Hi. I just Odin'ed back to stock firmware after experiencing no 4G data, only Edge, after flashing the Tmobile recovery through Rom Manager while on CM9 nightly #2. I had wiped and reflashed CM9, with no luck. I thought Odin'ing would fix the problem but it did not. I also tried removing the SIM card for a couple of minutes. Anyone have any suggestions what i could try? Thanks
Update: So far flashing CWM recovery using Rom Manager has set the IMEI to 0, on mine and MacTheRipperr's phone.
Anyone else with similar issues after flashing recovery through Rom Mananger?

Are you sure it wasn't a Tmobile problem? Maybe you should try other kernels and/or roms... I'm using AOKP on my Galaxy S since february and on my Galaxy SIII since June 19th, I haven't experienced any problems with mobile data, the link is below.
I hope it works.

Check your imei under the phone status. Do you have a 0? If so the same thing happened to me.
Do you have a back up of your /efs from the root?

Thank you for your response. I'm 99% sure it's not a Tmobile problem. I didn't have any issues with mobile data at all. This happend soon after i rebooted after flashing the tmobile Rom Manager custom recovery. First thing it did was give no signal connection at all. Then i reflashed the CM9 rom, which then was only able to get Edge network. Even after Odin'ing do i still only get Edge. I haven't tried a custom kernel yet. With certain devices, I've known of issues with modem's are sometimes fixed by flashing a standalone modem rather than going through the whole Odin process. But that isn't an option that is available for the T999 varient.

Yes it reads 0 and no i do not have an /efs backup. The root process I used was the Sprint root zip file flashing CWM and root using Odin. I wasn't aware of a backup that was made. After Odin'ing back to stock, i did the same root method and have flashed Redrum Lean Stock Mod which im currently on. Where would i find the /efs if this method did make a backup of it?
Question for curiosity s sake did you flask the cwm touch recovery
You should backup your EFS folder before flashing any rom, if you'd lost your IMEI you will have problems with mobile data and/or phone service.
I've found two topics about it here, the first one has a link to recover Tmobile and the second is more general. I hope it works!

You guys are freaking me out about losing IMEI. Thankfully mine is fine after rooted and flashing several ROMs.
How do I backup my EFS folder?
/sigh re-read all the imei threads, there's like 10 of them. Backing up the efs folder will not help you at all. The nv data.bin file is not there anymore and nobody has found it yet. Your only option is odin back to stock, take your phone back to where you bought it, and say this POS broke and i can't get lte even though i paid for it. If you're still under warranty hopefully they will replace it.

Clockwork Recovery not reading new 32GB microSD

I just bought a new 32GB MicroSD from Amazon. I format using Cloockwork recovery. After copying all my ROM's to the SD card everytime I try to flash a ROM it always say "no files found". All other app can read my microsd except clockwork recovery.
I am currently using Team Objection UCLE5 (If it matters)
ClockworkMod Recovery 5.8.4.8
Thanks
I just updated the same version of CWM that you did with the same results so that you know you are not alone my friend Hopefully, we can get this sorted out soon. I was stock rooted when I noticed the issue.
Its this version of CWM...
It will only see your internal SD.
PITA.
so your card is fine.
Yup, happened to me last night. There's something wrong with the newest CWM Recovery, but as soon as I flashed the Touch CWM everything was back to normal.:good:
Thank you all. i will try the new touch recovery.

Installed CWM to make NanDroid backup fail in recovery saying failed to mount /data

I installed CWM from google play store and bought the premium version. Solely for the purpose of makeing NanDroid backups. When it boots into recovery it says error failed to mount /data or something like that. No option at all.
Rooted, but otherwise stock.
Stock Samsung Galaxy S4.
MK2.
Version 4.3.
All I wanna do is make NanDroid backups. The reason I went with CWM is because I started using it back in the day when the HTC Incredible came out and that was my phone.

You cannot install a custom recovery (incl. CWM) on the verizon S4 unless you buy one with MDK or a developer edition.
You can install safestrap though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
Ok

Without booting into recovery you won't be able to use the nandroid backups. So there's no reason to create them then.
Maybe consider backing up specific apps with Titanium Backup? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
Ok. I'll try titanium. Thanks.

Trouble with TWRP 2.7.10

I have a Galaxy S5 from T-Mobile and was using TWRP recovery. I had made a back-up of everything and had to restore using it. After the restore Every app I tried to open had this error "unfortunately (app name) has stopped. This was with every app!!! Is there a setting I am missing? Could it have to do with other back-ups , i.e. Dropbox , Google or Samsung. Do these have to be turned off?
Please help.

Hey Leon, sorry for your problem.
When you made a back up, it was with twrp or titanium backup, or something else?
I had an issue using the backup feature of any custom recovery, so I stick to using titanium backup and having it back everything up to my sd card so if I flash anything and the internal memory is wiped, I still have my data.
Hope you get it figured out Leon.
TWRP 2.7.0.0 makes reliable backups for the S5. There was an update to 2.7.1.0 a few weeks ago (the version number in your thread title is incorrect). The changelog for the current version doesn't appear to suggest any major changes and I don't see any reason to rush into an upgrade. Newer isn't necessarily better and I will wait a while before updating in case any unexpected bugs arise.
Having said that, it's unlikely that there is a problem with TWRP. The TWRP team does great work and bugs are rare. You should read the TWRP threads to see if anyone else is having problems. The existing threads would also be a more effective place to seek assistance. Bugs should be posted to the TWRP github issues log so that they can address them.
.
I have there exact same problem. I was too lazy to report that and then I saw your that. After restoring the backup, none of the apps open. No solution yet.

An easy workaround and a way to identify some alternate causes of your difficulties would be to use version 2.7.0.0 for now since it has been widely reported as reliable.
Go into recovery and fix permissions and wipe all caches

You posted earlier that you had the exact same problem as the OP. But now it turns out that you're not even using the same version of TWRP as he is.
If you missed that critical detail, it raises the real possibility that you might be using a TWRP build intended for a different device. And that would surely cause just the type of problem that you are having. Ensure that you are using a TWRP or Philz build that is intended for your exact handset.
