Well we all know that the Xperia U lacks a SD card socket which is pretty lame if you are wanting to install alot of games, music and what now. However earlier today i was thinking, would a Micro USB to SD card reader work on the Xperia U?
Something like this :
http://www.chinabolton.com/upload/201203/watermark/1330592519.jpg
Obviously it will need kernel modifications but is it possible?
Xperia U has native OTG support, just buy a USB OTG cable and connect memory card/pen drive to it and it should also automatically mount it for you.

whats the maximum u can get??
just remember that the pen drives or card readers or mouse or keyboard consuming too much power wont work....
so trying to connect a 500gb hard disk is no go....

750GB Seagate and 1.5TB external powered WD work perfectly here.
Edit: XPS, not that it matters.
The moderator Commitee has informed me im too move all questions to the Q&A thread for you. because you need all the help you can get

My current portable hard drive apparently uses too much power for the galaxy tab.
Are there any 500gig + hard drives that use the same power as a thumb drive or is this just wishful thinking?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
You will have to use an USB Hub with power supply. All spinning HDD's require much more power than the tablet is supplying.
I know it is not cheap, but you can today buy 128GB USB flash drives - they will work well and store also a lot of HD movies!
i am curious how you are connection your HD to the tab? if you are usign the usb host usb adapter, the little paper that came with it supports up to 32gb fat32 drives. i dont know if thats true or not, but if it is, you wont even be able to use a 128 usb flash drive as previously suggested.
i can confirm that a 32gb fat32 usb flash drive works, used with my sandisk cruiser 32
For portability the Seagate wireless drive would work.
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Satellite-Wireless-Storage-STBF500101-Black/dp/B004Z0S7K6
Using a powered hub will work just fine with portable hard drives. I have a 500GB Seagate that works very well
The USB 2.0 spec can only handle supplying 100mA x 5. So 500mA draw us the max it can supply to any drive. I don't know of any drives that are that low, might as well use a flash drive or SD card.

Hosts are actually not required to supply 500 mA even. They are required to supply 100, and may negotiate up to 500 during device enumeration.
PCs that don't support 500 are extremely rare, but mobile devices with OTG are a different story - many are limited to 100. This seems to include our device.
2.5" spinning hard drives that use less than 500 can be found. Less than 100 is not possible.
As to the 32GB limit - I have no idea why that's in the flyer, other than maybe the fact that it's VERY rare to see drives above this size formatted as FAT since Windows refuses to format drives of this size as FAT.
I have a 120GB WD external drive that works fine on my netbook (single USB port cable) I'll have to pick up a USB adapter and try it.
IIRC as the size (GB) of the drive goes up so does it's power draw.
Has anybody tried a 1.8" drive from an MP3 player?
Power consumption
Start 1.8W (max.)
Seek 0.9W (typ.)
Read/Write 0.8W (typ.)
Low power Idle 0.3W (typ.)
Stand-by 0.1W (typ.)
Though I suppose this Thread is kinda dead...I'd still like to know if there is a way to connect harddrives bigger than 32GB (and to format a Fat32 driver bigger than 32GB). Wish to stream media from my tablet to the PS3 and other players via Skifta...but I don't want to buy harddrives randomly, hoping they will work.
Tried with different USB Drives I have at home, but none works (well, NTFS of course).
Has anyone tried a bigger driver via powered USB Hub yet?
Or 64GB Sticks etc?
Cheers,
J.
i use a samsung hd 750 GB via powered hub, works great.

Sounds awesome! So, I suppose any powered hub works. Did you format the HD in any specific way or by the help of some fancy software (just wondering as I think Fat32 cannot be formatted under Win7 if the harddisk exceeded size x) ?
Thanks

If your tab is rooted you can get "usb mass storage otg" from the market which support your ntfs formatted drives no need for fat 32 crap anymore!

So it's true, you actually have to format your 500GB drive as FAT32 to get it working?
I guess this means no HD movies (files bigger than 4 GB) right?
i plug in the lod fashioned 3.5hdd externally powered and ntfs formatted,
not able to connect 2.5hdds yet. if anyone was successful, what is powered usb hub used, i was not able to connect using a local brand of powered usb hub.

hi everyone,
thanks for clearing my head about the desicion wheter to buy sensation XE and sony Xperia S. with its more RAM, better camera, increasing buyer and developer numbers, good screen and USB OTG support.
so, i have one more question. it is about USB OTG support. i know people can easily plug and play some certain external memory devices. i have go flex satelite ultra-portable usb 3.0 500 gb external hdd. i guess the USB 3.0 ones drawing less power so they can easily be run by phones or tablets. however i want to keep it NTFS formatted, it seems safer and faster than exFat. so i was wondering if there were any use of the app i have given the link below. can someone try it and report here?
thanks
I don't see the link, but if it's that Paragon thingy, then you don't need it. Just flash an NTFS enabled kernel and use StickMount.

sorry, this is the link..
BTW is there any NTFS supoorting kernel for Xperia S? (i guess i need to read a lot more)

I think both XSX and SSpeed kernel. I recommend StickMount by Chainfire, it's the kind of app that just works, but your link should work too.

BTW; I tried my new otg adapter with my usb sticks on an Xperia U: all worked fine, except a 16GB with USB3. The phone says: There is not enough power.
Is this a known problem with usb3? Or has this very usb stick a problem?

It happens with some usb sticks, they require more power than the phone can deliver, so it gives that error. Funny I use a 16GB usb stick from sandisk without problems and 8GB kingstons and Verbatim give that error too.

Use androzip or other file explorer, that happens with me too.
Mixed Bag
I have same 'requires too much power' problem :
Doesn't work for me:
Kingston DataTraveler Generation 2 USBstick (8Gb)
Duracell (PRO) Micro SDHC card CLASS 10 (8Gb) *
Generic Micro SD card CLASS 4 (2Gb) *
(* tried in 3 different card readers 2 of which are the miniature netbook type)
Does work for me:
Verbatim Store 'n' Go PinStripe USB stick (4Gb) (although astro filemanager and Clean filemanger sometimes show the disc as empty after 10 mins or so and only behave after a phone restart)
Panasonic DMC-TZ15 Digital Camera (with the Duracell (PRO) Micro SDHC card CLASS 10 (8Gb))
Peripherals connected to, Xperia U main microUSB(AB) socket via 90°(left hand) microUSB(B-male) to USB(A-female) adapter (no trailing cable).
(Apparently for a USB socket to be OTG compliant, it must be AB capable, yet the adapter i purchased wasn't specifically sold as an OTG capable item)
Very disappointing USB OTG memory stick/card performance from the Xperia U. Especially since there is no internal memory card slot and only 6 or 4 Gb of internal storage, depending on your view and/or phone software (partition) setup.
Saving grace is the 50Gb 'free with Xperia phones' cloud storage, with box.com, and the ability to take Photos on my camera and upload them to the tinternet while....on the go.
And of course I can use the micro SD card in the camera, on which I can pre load other files (namely Music and Video), as a 'powered' reader.
It would still be nice to just pop in the miniature sized reader complete with Micro SD card into the 90° adapter and browse away, as it makes the phone compact and convenient enough to use.
And of course the whole kerfuffle just begs the question;
Sony, why didn't you include memory card capability on the Xperia U ?
Phone : Sony Xperia U(ST25i) Running Android 4.0.4 build 6.1.1.B.1.54 (official update, Unrooted, Bootloader Locked)
Advantages:
1.cool browsing with mouse
2.expend your storage by plugging a pen drive (must be in FAT format)
3.with root access you can move apps and games to it(solve the crisis of Xperia U )
4.and more

Hi all, I have purchased a 1TB harddrive and an otg cable. I can connect the harddrive with the otg cable into my Galaxy S4 phone and it can read the harddrive flawlessly.
However, when I attempt to connect it to my tablet Z, the hard drive makes clicking sound, sounding like a motor failing to run. And as expected, the tablet z cant detect it.
So I would like to know if the tablet z is not strong enough to power the harddrive and any solutions to work around this problem. Thanks!
My galaxy S4 is rooted, my tablet z is not, if that has to do with helps.
The harddrive is also portable.

If it's a power issue you could put a powered usb hub between the otg cable and the disk.
Or you could buy a usb powerpack and plug the usb power cable into that, assumming the drive has a cable with 2 usb connectors.

I don't know about stock ntfs support but I do know there are apps that enable ntfs support.
The downside is they require root.

Any way, here you go:
Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+

Both available in the play store.
I've never used them, you have to try it yourself.
Hope this helps.

I bought this on an impulse and haven't used it recently. I think it only has one full size usb so you probably couldn't connect the hard drive and the phone at same time, although the card reader may work while wired to phone. It creates its own network or Hotspot so more than one device can see it, it can also be connected to wifi and will pass-through that signal.
It seems that if hdd doesnt work i need to search alternative storage expansion...using hdd with an adapter is a hassle cause need to carry more stuff...i need to be able to bring it to me all the time...128gb sd card is a little expensive to me now...but maybe later will switch to it...but now i will use this 64gb flash drive dual otg i found...small capacity but easy to use..it will do for now.....

Do you already have the hard drive? I was assuming you did, if not there are wireless ones with the function of that Kingston device. Seagate has this one for example, comes in three storage sizes, is rechargeable and creates its own wifi network.
