Noob here. Not really understanding how to root my phone. I simply want to root it and then install the very best and stable FROYO software. I don't need a ROM as I like Touchwiz (I know, don't kill me).
Can someone, pls provide detailed chronological ordered instructions on how to ROOT, what I NEED after I root and then install FROYO.
Thank you

The best phone in the world
Did you read the General Sticky? I tried very hard to make that as clear as possible. Just download the file, rename it, put it not in a folder in sdcard/ and then go to stock recovery (with your phone off, press and hold both volume keys, press and hold power, release power at the Vibrant screen while still holding both volume keys) then click on apply update, reboot phone and you are rooted.

He sure did make it easy in the sticky... Search, read, and learn.
If finding the search button is hard... I know it can be, since it is at the top right of every page on this forum, please click the large RED text in my sig... And any question you have will be answered for you, automagically!
^ hahaha, I love the signature. Thanks for the sticky compliment.
WOW! Such sarcasm. I don't really think that was necessary. And YES..... I did read the sticky.
sarcasm??? WTF, I was genuinely trying to help man.... if the sticky was not enough for you, you probably don't need to be rooting your phone because it doesn't get much simpler. Good luck, if you want help from others, try and not burn bridges. I tried.

@ OP: if your looking for stable as in, set it & forget it, do yourself a favor & wait... Seriously! One way I tell how a ROM is doing is read the first 2 post & last 2 pages. If you see the same issues being stated, dont flash, unless you are willing to deal with that problem.

He was just very patient and answered all my questions, and he's a very trustworthy guy. I bricked my phone about a month ago and have linux and couldn't use odin plus i was still a noob so seeing as my options were buy a new phone or say **** it and send it to him i sent my phone to him and he fixed it, added froyo and shipped it back. Plus he taught me a lot now i kno how to do a LOT now and no longer consider myself a "noob".
Thegreat520 should be a mod on here as he is by far the most helpful person i've ever come across online.

LOL I Thought the EXACT Same thing, because that sounds very fishy. Considering the time it took to ship there and back... like a week to 12 days at the very least? He must of had access to a STABLE version of Froyo before everyone else here on the board.
Yeah, to be clear I'm not trying to say anything negative. People helping people is ALWAYS a goo thing.
hello everyone, im a newbie to this who idea of rooting phones and making them do what u want, and i must say it turns me on hahaha jk anyways i have no technical knowledge and was wondering if u fine gentlemen could tell me whats the best way o root my phone or if i can pay someone in my area to do it for me and add new stuff to it like the one click lag fix n stuff like that. please help thanks guys!
You should start off with this thread:NOOB GUIDE: HOW TO ROOT/ODIN/FLASH/RECOVER ** 04/28/11 W/ Videos **
It's always better to understand what you're doing to your phone before you attempt to do anything (no one wants to permanently damage their phone).
Well you picked a good phone to learn on lol, the vibrant is by far the easiest to root/flash custom roms on.There are basically 3 things you need. superoneclick on your PC, rom manager on your phone and the rom you want to flash.
But as stated above you def want to read up just to make sure you know what you are doing, but its not difficult at all! The link posted above should def explain everything. Also if you ever run into a problem, just google the problem lol i am usually able to find a link to a thread on here explaining how to fix it GL!
I kinda got in the habit of rooting via Z4root app on my phone after using odin to go back to android 2.1 (eclair). I just keep the .apk file on my SD card.
The reason I did this was because while odin is an annoying and buggy program to deal with, it is the only way to truly reset your phone to stock if you mess something serious up. It is a fail-safe of sorts so it is worth it to familiarize yourself with that process.
The "noob guide" posted should outline what you need to flash back to stock 2.1 which is odin (duh), a .pit file, and a .tar zip file.
I go back to 2.1 since z4root I believe has to be used on eclair? I could not get it working on stock 2.2 froyo at any rate.
once your phone is rooted the fun part begins from there you can download many different rom zip files which are available in the vibrant development section. General rule of thumb is to always FLASH ROMS at 100% battery.
Head to the market and pick up Rom Manager and Titanium Back up. Open rom manager once you have a rom downloaded and "reboot into recovery" (to manually flash a rom) press volume keys to select "reinstall packages", wait, then reinstall packages again. This should now be the green clockwordmod (commonly referred to as cwm) recovery menu. Scroll down to "install from zip", "choose zip", "download", select the rom you downloaded, yes, go back, reboot system.
The phone will take awhile to boot up, when it does let it SIT FOR TEN MIN. This is to help iron out any bugs. Reboot the phone. Sign into google and restore apps if you saved them in titanium back up. Reboot again just for good measure
If you decide to flash a different KERNEL than the one that comes with the rom, you don't have to be at 100% battery, just go into cwm and flash the kernel zip like you would a rom.
When not flashing from stock it is recommended that you:
-factory/data reset
-install rom
-clear cache partition
-advanced> clear dalvik cache
All while in cwm.
Remember to hit the "Thanks" button to the creator of the ROM / KERNEL / THEME / APP you apply.

Hey hun.
You picked a good phone to start learning about those things.
The Vibrant is extremely easy to root and do pretty much everything.
Just keep in mind these two things: Follow the instruction PRECISELY and unless it's absolutely necessary, do NOT use ODIN.
At least not at first, after you get a handle of your phone, you can start experimenting.
Also, when flashing ROM/Kernels, etc, read the comments first for issues that might surface.
As they say, always read the OP completely, then do what you need
EDIT: LOOOOOOL
Can't believe I fell for a troll.
Geez, I sure have been away from the internet forums for too long...
Just google rooting a samsung vibrant. You can also find out how to do it all over this forum. Plus roms pretty much install them selves now once you have everything set up... Read in to it about and you will find its super easy.

There will be no fighting with anyone in this forum, its only to vent your anger here. I will start.
I try to help people by reading through the forum but everyday real problems are over shadowed by people asking what is the best way to root their thunderbolt....every day that shortly followed by how much they searched for this subject when if you simply search on Google Thunderbolt+root method you will find you answer, if you can't find Google, do a Bing search on it or askjoe.com
Second why are all these new guys over clocking to 1.9 and expect their phone to be stable? Don't they read the forum of the kernel they flashed? Or just rush to general or q&a and post freezing problems. People you will get very good support if you post in the kernel you use or Rom your kernel came with the developers keep their eyes on that thread.
When did thunderbolt general become Verizon support if you have a network drop, don't make a thread for each city it is down in, call Verizon don't think every issue has to do with a radio or your kernel or your Rom.

"How do I install this? (install directions mentioned in the OP)"
"This alpha/beta/testing software sure is buggy / why is feature x broken in this? (broken issue mentioned in the OP for said software) (followed by vague description/no description of what is broken without a logcat by user asking question)"
"What's the best ROM / Rooting Method?"
"Help! I installed a non-root user RUU on top of my rooted phone"
"When will we get x / what is the eta for x?" (x = gingerbread|ics|next phone|new rom|etc)
Asking a question already answered in the stickied common questions / noob guide in the Q/A forum.
Go look at the PRL thread in the Incredible General forum. I get reamed out and called every name in the book.... But I was the only one that produced an answer! I'm about to the point of letting these idiots twist in the wind. I'm tired of fools that can't find the answers that are basically fed to them. And if a mod has a problem with that frustration, oh well... Do the right thing and ban stupid, not me.
I like when someone throws an off topic question in a thread and others bite. Then if you are interested in the original topic you have to filter through all the garbage to see if any progress or good information was actually posted.

or asking about how to fix an issue that was asked just 2-3 pages back when it really shouldn't be asked in the topic thread at all (post it separately in q/a). This is why developers don't reply to their threads much. They just get to be a mess and they give up.
I just ignore those.... It's easy, everyone should try it !

The thought "help those who help themselves" always comes to mind when I see those posts !
Ya my other favorite one is when they ask which rom is the best.
I feel like asking them, so if I tell you to jump off a bridge will you do it?
If not, they why would you take what I say as the best rom as the gospel?
Roms are such a subjective thing. Some people like some things some like others.
My first Android phone was a G1, so I was pretty used to the "stock" experience. Even when I rooted, I stuck pretty much with Cyanogen.
When I got the bolt and realized Cyanogen was not really "available", I got into BAMF and I gotta tell you, they did a pretty impressive job with sense.
Before I would have just laughed at someone if they said sense was the way to go, but I really kinda like it now. So I know that even my viewpoint has changed somewhat.
I don't understand why these people cannot just go out and make up their own mind about which rom they like by just flashing them and trying them out. If they don't like it, they just nandroid back to what you had before they flashed the new rom.
I wonder if they all look like lemmings? Hmmmm.
I get so tired of people running AOSP ROMs creating new topics and stating in just about every AOSP ROM thread that they can't get a lock on their GPS...
Drunk texted from my CM7 Bolt
[RANT]Agreed. Google is my best friend. If I don't know how to do something when I cook my Rom, Google. When I need to know something about linux, Google.
STOP ASKING WHAT THE BEST ROM! THERE ISN'T A BEST ROM!!

The fact that Miguel did some research and spelled out his interpretation of how to flash a custom ron/kernel shows. Far more effort than the typical noob. I appreciate those that do some reading and ask for validation of the process.

I thought I answered this for you by PM???
I don't understand why even after receiving my answer you felt it necessary to post this.
Other than the rom it doesn't actually matter what order you install these.
In fact, you can do this in ANY order because what you are wanting to do consists of THREE DIFFERENT partitions.
Boot
Recovery
System
Boot is the kernel
Recovery is recovery
System is rom.
Dude just do it and learn something for yourself instead of asking for permission first. Really you'll be fine. And if your not... it's a learning experience.
Really, I take back my prior post. Bad form OP.

Problem?
A phone not booting is a problem.
A phone freezing at the boot screen is a problem.
A phone bootlooping is a problem.
A phone not able to dial 9-1-1 is a problem.
A phone that doesn't have a touch screen is a problem.
A phone that never has signal is a problem.
Those are good examples of problems.
What problem did you have again?
I'll be honest with you. I'm a bit irritated by this thread. You sent me a PM to which I replied.
At 0032 hours I received your PM.
At 0047 you posted this thread (only fifteen minutes later).
At 0137 hours I replied to your PM not knowing you already posted this thread.
So here's the deal. Don't PM me again for your "problems" because you can clearly get your answers like everyone. You just wasted my time. You would be irritated too if it happened to you. Only in my case I get flooded by messages with people that have real "problems" and I'm sorry if I have to prioritize. Clearly yours should have been the lowest of priority. Again... don't PM me anymore.

I'm sure you meant nothing by it but I can understand where he's coming from.
One thing here is just to post and be patient.
I've had someone PM me about an issue with their phone and then I spent 10 minutes looking up information to resolve it for them just to hop on the General Forum to see they had started a thread about it too.
So why then did they waste my time PMing me if they were just going to start a thread?
So my suggestion is just pick one route next time.
PM and wait, or open a thread and wait.
And BY THE WAY...search first before anything else.
And try looking for keywords related to your problem as opposed to typing in your exact question and then saying you couldn't find anything using search.
I've seen a lot of questions get repeated because they didn't realize their question was already asked simply because they worded it differently. (I've done this too.)
Anyways good luck.

I have 1,683 messages in my inbox. Do you know how many I get on a daily basis? Dozens! I try to respond to them as quickly and promptly as possible. But I am not some tech support employee that is required to answer any of them. I don't need to answer them. But I do anyway because I like to help. But when I saw this thread it did upset me... obviously. Would you blame me for my reaction? Perhaps I did over-react and for that I apologize. You obviously got your answer so that's all that counts.
Howdy all! If you've seen me around you'll know I love being an active member of these forums. With my job I have free time some days (some days NONE lol) and helping people makes me happy. I hate causing problems. But there has been a rash of interesting posts within the last 6 months (maybe going back farther but there has been an increase in the past 6 months that I've noticed) of people beginning their posts with:
" sorry for the noob question, but..."
Also, some start with, " sorry I did a search but I'm pressed for time and...."
OK. Look. When I joined up, I had to watch a video. It showed me how much of a noob I am, and told me to search, then search some more, and finally, SEARCH. Again. Now, maybe I'm crazy, but that is still XDA policy. Just because yer new, it doesn't give u an excuse to be lazy. Just because yer in a hurry , it doesn't give u the right to ignore the rules u agreed to when u signed up here.
I was a noob too. A year ago. Guess what? From day one I searched. And searched. And searched again. Why? Cause I love solving as many problems as I can ON MY OWN. Lets try and get back to that. Google search is a great tool. Yes the mobile app search is limited. But u have a browser on your phone. U can go to the actual site and search there as well. Remember, we're a community. And these rules are put in place to help us and maintain some semblence of order.
Remember folks when u search first, and don't post a new thread for something easily found, it not only looks better for u. But it reflects the respect u have for this community and its mods/devs.
Good luck all, happy flashing.
P.S. Red, if have to close this thread, just know this meets my quota for rants for the month.

I like this guy, but I have low expectations.
I personally have NO issue reading "noobie" questions. Everyone is different and I don't expect they must act like me. For you, me and others who spot a so-called "noob question", if you don't want to help then report the thread/post to mod so they can take care of. Yelling at newbies just makes the matter worse and that have been proved for ......... like you said, the past 6 months.
What irritates me more is SAME person asking the SAME question by creating multiple threads.
Therefore, for us, seniors, if you're not willing to help then just simply walk away from the thread, don't post, don't act like you are the mod.
One other issue, don't be an ass-kisser here.
For newbie, pls read the sticky thread FIRST.
This is 100% correct but you are missing one other important word to go with your "rules, etiquette and respect" slogan and that word is "Attention"
People need to pay attention! So if you could just change the title of the thread to "Rules, Etiquette, Attention, and Respect" or R.E.A.R. for short? Then I think that will cover it. So next time someone asks a question in the wrong thread? I can just point them right to your R.E.A.R.
Most of us are coming to under stand that there is no help what so ever for what the old gaurd calls common qustions so we just go else where
I spent 18 hours sunday working on my phone and I am happy with the results.
The biggest problem is even the fairly detailed instructions leave out the tiniest simple things people do not think of because they just figure everyone on earth should know it.
take for example if you are trying to get your phone ready and going right now the easiest way is to use the directions and flash to a older SU rom then up grade it from there. I searched for hours and could not find an answer to a simple question on why Odin would not upload the files I was trying to load so I had CWM.
In the end the answer, which I figured out my self, was that Odin will not load the .zip files everyone uses for CWM. I accedently tripped over a kernel that was in a different format,.tar, and got lucky.
After that I soft bricked the phone a few times following directions and then ran across the Little bricker Rom that had GREAT directions and loaded first time perfectly.
So for you old timers I might say step back every once in a while when you are writing the great write ups you do and think of the first time you did it. It is the little things that count and are left out most of the time
As Android grows you are going to have to deal with it more and more and you just can't keep kicking people in the teeth or they will not return. GOOD you say? No not good. Not everyone wants an Apple and you do not want to wind up like Nokia or the old PDA platforms that are dead and gone.
So take this how you may. I did get where I needed to go but a simple 20 minute gig took 18 hours to figure out because of the little things all of you take for granted and do not always include.
Thank you for the site
All said here is true but as a noob i must say that there is a lack of usual information here.
A BIG lack...
The problem is visual.
The stickies was made by a dev. Just find a good NOOB to do it and youll be fine.
The first stickie must be how to flash a rom. But this one is not there. It is inside of another stickie at the line 157... cmon
The noob that decides to flash wont read all the stuff. He'll just read the info that he wants.

I don't think there is a lack of information, far from it. I think the problem is that the information is scattered. For example, the guy 2 posts up that tried to use a .zip in Odin...the information that you need to use a .tar is posted in these forums, it's just not in an easily accessible place like the FAQs. I think it's a combination of: lack of organization on the forum's side and laziness on the user's side.
Sorry about my english, there is a communication lack.
you are right, the info was there but people just dont get it...why is that?
Ive edited my previous post...
There is too much info. The noob needs the basic. Step by step he will learn.
Inside the Red stickie, look at the title of the topics listed there.
That is chinese to a noob.
How to flash custom binaries... what a hell is a binarie?
How to flash... the counter?
What... counter?
That is not made for noobies...as i said before, find a noob to do it.

you're not even a mod...what gives you the right to post this?
I think some of you have forgotten how this place originally came about and its primary purpose. It was and still is, mostly, a place for developers and development. It was never supposed to be a help desk. That it is a great resource for people needing help is a secondary byproduct, not its raison de'tre. I think this misunderstanding is what leads to incorrect assumptions and expectations and, in turn, hurt feelings when the forum doesn't meet what some think it should be.

I respectfully disagree. The noob does not need a step by step guide. The noob needs to read, research, and learn so that he (or she) can make sense of the available information. a quick guide so the noob "can haz ROM nao" is only going to lead to a disappointed, knowledge lacking noob later on down the line...

Yes Miami but this place become a lot bigger than any dev could think.
Is this bad?
Devs cant complaim about it.
This is the price if sucess.
Just get over it...
Ps. I think he post it cuz he want...

And you need to remember that the developers in here, for the most part, don't get paid for what they do. We get all their great stuff for free. Actually, we get it for the cost of doing our own research and finding our own solutions. Seems like a fair trade to me.
And as dandrum noted, helping noobs by leading them by the hand is a bad idea. People need to understand fully what they are doing and what it does because otherwise when they inevitably run into a problem they will have no idea what to do to fix it or where to start to even look. This stuff isn't rocket science, but it does require a certain level of comprehension. it is unfair to expect the unpaid members of this forum to bail people out when something goes wrong because they either didn't do their homework or have no understanding of what they're doing.

No they absolutely can complain because this is still a developer Site no matter how popular it becomes.

What gives you the right to post? You're not a mod either. Also, basically everything he said was correct.

From my perspective I feel as though the vast majority of the time I have virtually no reason to post.
This is usually because of one of the following:
a- someone else has asked a question that I do not have the answer to, not that I'm a n00b but do not know or I would rather leave it up to the real devs to deal with it;
b- I would just be either flaming someone for asking a stupid question or leave a stupid question unanswered because some things should just be figured out by yourself; or most importantly
c- if i have a question or some other issue I can search for it or spend time reading through many posts because there are enough people and knowledgeable people around here that at this point my question or any sort of problem has already been answered, or at least the question has already been asked so there is no reason to spam the same questions over and over.
so just always remember before you make a possibly redundant post there are plenty of us sitting back and reading because usually that is all you need to do
