Hi,
Just made a Nandroid backup of your current rom then flash the new rom you want and if something is wrong or you don't like it... just restore your backup...
You can do that for all the rom you want to test, it is much simpler
That way you can really test on your phone... Even if it were possible on a PC, you can imagine that if you could test it on your pc it would not be comparable to test on your phone.

Everything that flashes ROM's or works on the formatting of the device's internal storage is dangerous. I have yet to see someone who caused his device to hardbrick by using the app according to it's description.
It only modifies a value in the NAND, nothing much that can really go wrong. A risk always exists with all changes and updates.

If you're that worried about bricking or avoiding the flash counter... why are you even trying to flash custom roms?
This is a development forum, I'll be the first to admit I have no idea how to develop anything apart from a deep hatred towards in-your-face vegetarians but at least I have a vague idea of what I'm doing, what I can do, and what I really shouldn't even think of doing. I got that from many hours lurking and searching these forums, try it some time.

I would, for 2 bucks you might as well, and then if anything goes wrong you don't have to wait to sort it. Having said that in 2 years of flashing and beta testing I have never needed one.Your choice, but flashing this device is simple if you do the necessary reading and follow the guides

Un-Root Samsung Galaxy S2? Can this be done please?

Hi all,
Not sure whether to root or not, as I fear for my warranty :/ does it affect warranty ? and can it be reversed?
Thanks
James
Just want to know if it can be easily reversed please
Also what are the main advantages and disadvantages ? ...
I wanna remove some samsung apps, install droidwall and install LCD Density
Root can be reversed, and we can reset the flash count for unsigned kernels too
So yeah it should be undoable fine by flashing a stock rom and resetting download counter.
How do you go about removing a root? And is data lost?
You could re-flash back to the stock rom....but that will erase your data.
does the stock rom also update the kernel back to a secure one??
Sorry to bump this old thread but can Samsung or others detect if the phone has been rooted and then unrooted it it were for example to sent back for repair under warranty?

can you link me to where you purchased your jig? Also have u tried to see if the jig works? or you havent rooted your phone yet?
Would it be possible to unroot just using Superoneclick?
I tried once and it worked. However, does it completely remove all traces of root?

[Q] So, any luck getting root without increasing flash counter?

Basically looking for an update as to whether anyone has rooted without increasing the flash counter. I see people refering to a thread saying it roots without increasing the counter, but it says in the OP of that thread that it does increase flash counter (and that particular OP is extremely vague).
So just looking for an update from someone more experienced with Samsung phones and this flashcounter stuff. Thanks in advance.
+1. I just came from the epic 4g touch and over there the issue was resolved with a usb jig. Also ,i believe there was an app developed that would do it.

As I said I am new to the whole Odin thing. I was under the impression flashing anything with Odin would increase the counter, this is not the case? What does increase the counter then?
If you want root and not increase flash counter use that method @roloracer mentions. That's what I used and it was easy.

is not odin that increases the flash counter, cause if samsung would release an update and you wanted to flash from the pc and not from ota update , it wouldn't increase the flash counter, custom kernels/roms/recoveries do , but for some reason the system root doesn't, I still haven't decided if I'm going to say screw the counter, I probably would have if there was more roms to try out, but I'm going to be patient until a stable cm7 or ics rom is out.

nothing except you can't overclock past the 1.5ghz since you still have the stock kernel, but you can use any rooting app, and use setcpu with a performance scaling to throttle the cpu to the max or lower it to save battery. Once you use a custom kernel the flash counter will trip.
Big thanks rolo, this was very informative.

I believe it's because of an existing app (Triangle Away Thread) that works to remove the counter on ICS. DA_G refers to it here (post 49): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218&page=5

Here's what I'd like to do:
Root my phone and go to ICS. However, if I ever have a problem, I want to be able to get the phone back to stock, so my warranty is still good. So, do I root with mashi's method or do I just root with any method and use the reset counter (linked on here somewhere)?
Since I want to install ICS is there any reason to care about the counter and will the reset counter work after installing ICS if I have to go back to stock?
Do I still get the ICS update from AT&T when it comes out? Or is this like jailbreaking (something I'm VERY familiar with), and you just wait until someone comes up with a new custom ROM that has the Suite.
I know these are a lot of questions, but it's all stuff I'm currently researching, and it's not apparent what's the right thing to do (mostly due to this all being kind of new....some of the threads on here are only a month or so old). Anyway, my goal is to get to ICS and be able to get to stock if I ever have to with the least risk possible.

[Q] Check For Update issue after root

hello all,
i have followed entropy512's thread here to get my at&t samsung galaxy s2 rooted with stock settings...i then wanted clockworkmod recovery so i went to this and followed directions to get everything installed...everything was ok and working until a few weeks ago when the 'Check Update' option under Setting stopped working...
basically what happens is when i goto Settings-> Software Update->Check for updates->Hit OK (Check the AT&T server for new software update?) a dialog comes up that says 'Checking for software updates...' and nothing happens...i have left the phone over night with device management app checking for software updates... when this used to work, it took less than 1 minute to check...
finally, the only way for me to stop this is to go and force stop Device Manager under Applications->All, so before i restore the phone to factory, i was wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue here?
Thanks,
FI

OTA updates require factory recovery. I'm a bit hazy on the details but I believe CWM, in short, replaces that.
It might also be because you either turned off/uninstalled or inadvertently removed factory bloatware.

This. Amongst other things. If u insist on trying to eventually upgrade to whatever crap gets pushed out to us yer best bet is to do a full wipe to completely stock firmware.

Do you recall all the issues with UCKK6 Gingerbread? That was an AT&T release. The devs had to tear it apart to debug and try to fix it. Any build will have bugs in it. But generally, custom firmwares will have fewer bugs than AT&T firmware.

if my research that i conducted a while ago is right, then basically samsung has implemented a flash counter which increments each time you flash a custom, non-stock rom...it might also be applied to non-stock kernels/firmwares as well (im not too sure)...so to prevent the flash counter from ever incrementing, ill need to put the phone in download mode using the jig and continue from there...

This is wrong. It is only incremented when you use ODIN to flash nonstock items. CWM has no bearing on flash counters.

You have some bad information...but I have some good news for you.
The flash counter only counts the number of times you've flashed a custom kernel in download mode via Odin. Using CWM to flash anything can't touch the flash counter. Same goes for Mobile Odin. I've been rooted and flashing for months, I don't have a jig, and my counter is still at zero.

Any GB issues only surfaced if you updated to 2.3.6. 2.3.4 for a "stock" firmware was pretty awesome. I'm on the latest ICS leak from ATT (LD4) and aside from the emmc bug (I'm using a safe kernel so I don't have it) IMHO its more complete then CM9 was. I stopped using CM9 at the end of May and don't miss it at all now.

I reccomend roms that use i9100 bases as they are usually better, roms like phonebricker, and shostock2 are good, my favorite touchwiz based rom though is serendipity 9. But thats my experiences so try them for yourself (i use aokp as my daily though.)

[Q] Total noob at android, have a couple questions

Hi, I have recently gone from an iPhone 4S and got my mothers S3 (international, i9300 running 4.1.2). As an advanced iphone user, who is familiar with jailbreaking, I want to try root my phone. However, from what I've read around here and other forums, rooting seems to be far more complex than jailbreaking, and it seems like there is a bigger chance of bricking your device if you do anything wrong. Therefore, I ask you to please give me a newbie tutorial of how to root this phone and preferably some pros and cons about rooting.
Thanks in advance!
Hi and welcome to XDA and Android!
The best way to root would be to click on the root information tab after searching for your phone in the top right of the XDA website.
The video will take you through the whole process!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Start by reading the stickies at general sections, Everything you need to know is there. Good luck!
And for pros and cons there is for example this video.
/Edit: Im so slow typer D:
thanks, both of you. I am going to look more into it a bit later, but meanwhile a new question. If something goes wrong and my phone gets soft or hard bricked, how big is the chance of fixing it? One thing I really like about iphones is that no matter how much you mess up, you can just perform a restore in itunes.
You shouldn't have any problems if you follow the instructions.. As simple as that.
A soft brick is extremely easy to fix, a hard brick is really rare and only happens if you mess with the bootloader so just read carefully and be brave, you will actually notice that it is really easy and somewhat safe these days..
If you need any assistance if you mess up just send me a PM..

That's great! My last question is about the video under root info, does it support all versions?
Probably easiest to root by flashing a custom kernel (as probably all have root included) flash using mobile odin, then it takes a minute to do. Custom Roms usually have root too.

Before flashing anything use the right file to flash , dont flash any other device firmware and use cf auto root it will root your device in 30 seconds only

Like everyone suggested, just flash a compatible kernel like perseus and you should be good to go with root AND a custom kernel.

So if I have stock JB, no root, I can just flash perseus and I'm rooted?
This is a good tool.

yes, but you need a custom recovery to flash it
Also, make sure to download and flash the correct rom for your device

MJ7 Progress to Flashing

So we on MJ7 obviously at this point are stuck with barely gaining root and still not able to flash custom ROMs... So I'm making this thread for us to post up any leads or any questions we have on furthering our phones to be able to flash...
Any devs currently working on this would be helpful to chime in to let us know what's up and what you need for us to help...

+1. Would be nice to have an unlocked bootloader again. Should've never taken the OTA. :crying:

Your telling me! I did a lil research and saw that there were ROMs for the s4 and I just got it the other day and coming from the s3 I was like this will be easy to root and flash again..... Pshhhh come to find out I bought an MJ7 so the rooting process was a pain in the @#$%& lol
So figured I'd start a place for us with this crappy problem to discuss stuffs lol

I will be watching this thread like a hawk.
I know the feeling....
I just recently bought a new S4 as well with MJ7 on it and I'm going crazy all over looking for a way to root and install a custom rom specially now that this one came out for us on the S4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524644 ufff!!! I will be watching over this!!!!
Admittedly I'm new to this, but from my research, can't you just flash an old kernel/version and then install whatever you want?
Wouldn't this method work? galaxys4root . com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-verizon-galaxy-s4-sch-i545/
Basically put in ODIN mode and install an old image, then you can install the ROM you want, right?

Negative, the bootloader was updated and LOCKED TIGHT.. Attempt this and you will have a hard bricked S4... Don't do it!!!

Exactly.
If you are on a newer version of ROM, you cannot go back.
That is why, one should be very careful about taking an update.
Thanks for the info. Glad I didn't try that
When I got my device it was at least two versions back, so there's no way to factory reset my device to what I got when I first received my device?

Eh... It wouldn't brick it, it just wouldn't let you flash it I'm pretty sure.

If you try to flash an older image via Odin, you think it would just fail?
I'm still pissed about forgetting to check the Survival Mode option!! :silly:

It's relatively well documented that you cannot downgrade from MJ7. If I recall, it's not a hard brick. It's either a soft brick or the flash just fails.
I have faith that we'll have an answer to this soon. Devs never take long to find a workaround.

soft brick, you will get the connect to kies emergency screen. Just odin the full odin mj7 tar from the dev section and it will boot again. ( Yes, I was stupid enough to try it )

Same here. Lol. Used Verizon upgrade/repair assistant to recover. So is a root method being worked on that we know of? Man, stock is just so painful after going root!

There is a root method... I'm rooted on the mj7 its just they haven't got a recovery to work with it yet so no flashing stuff... But at least with root you can change DPI settings and freeze and delete bloatware so its really not that bad anymore while we wait...

Hopefully Hashcode can eventually hook us up with SafeStrap at least.. The whole custom recovery thing isn't looking to to good.

@Stolly08 what method did you use to Root? I'm still hesitant to try...had my VZ GS4 (running MJ7) for about 3 weeks now.
I'm basically trying to rid my device of bloatware (and praying to eventually flash custom ROMS whenever we all figure that out )
After having HTC phones for 5 years, all rooted, I said enough of the crappy battery life and decided to take the Samsung mainly because of the huge dev support and good battery life. Kinda bummed out we dont have root for MJ7 with unlocked boot loader but Im sure the Dev's are working hard to get it for us
