Have you had issues with the power button? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Mine seems to randomly stick and it's a little floppy. I'll go through the hassle of trying to exchange it.

I had the same issue with a loose power button. I ended up returning mine. I also had a thread about this. It seems to be the one issue the phones have. If your within your 30 days I'd exchange it if I was you. save your self the headache 6 months from now! Or however long it works for.

[Q] Hero with a mind of it's own

Hi guys, I could really use some help.
I've a T-Mobile G2 variant which was running a stock HTC Sense ROM. I started getting weirdness happening on it though - the home screen moving on it's own - switching between pages and back again, pressing any buttons apart from the power button just switched the home screens to the thumbnail view. Dialogue boxes refused to let me press the okay or cancel buttons, and texting became impossible - key presses deciding for themselves what they thought I was pressing. Rebooting the phone made little difference, and I tried re-calibrating several times, but this only helped for a short time before it all went again.
Just before Christmas I decided to flash a new ROM, deciding upon the Froyo 2.2.1 final from Elelinux. I have the same problem though, and it's right annoying.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?
Apps I currently have installed are:
Google Sky Map
Jewels
Google Scoreboard
Shazam
Sky+
Superuser
Terminal Emulator
WiFi Analyzer
The phone is almost 18 months old, but had been working perfectly until recently - around the same time I installed Angry Birds (which I uninstalled assuming it to be the cause).
Well i had this behavior as well. You need to change your digitizer as your screen has become unresponsive. I tried to fix it myself following the guidelines in the according thread in General and ended up breaking my camera lens.
So what i am suggesting is you get it to an HTC Repair store and let them fix it under warranty. Mine is as good as new now.
Unfortunately sounds like an issue with the digitizer in the screen, which can be repaired but isn't a simple job. The fact that touching the screen anywhere shows the preview suggests the screen is already registering a touch (hence broker digitizer). Don't spose you have an extended warranty or insurance for a replacement?
Hi there,
I've changed mine a month ago, it has cost me about 40€ and was made in 30min with the official tutorial from Htc that you can find on youtube. It was yes.. Really eaaasy ;-)
gruß,
H.
Thanks for the replies - I had hoped it would be software, although I kinda knew it would be hardware. I've got a monthish left on my contract, so I don't think it'll be in warranty, see if I can hang on without it :/
Isn't HTC giving 2 year of warranty for hardware? I've still got a year to go in mine.
mine's not from HTC - it's a T-Mobile one (albeit from a 3rd party supplier), and T-Mobile warranties are usually rubbish from my experience.
Well you won't lose anything by trying. Get in touch and bust their balls so you can get your digitizer changed. It's a hardware fault, not yours. I was treating mine very very well and still it broke after 9 months of use.
Get them to change it, it's not your fault they use crap material to make them.
from what you've said, Id say its maybe more likely to be a trackball issue, which probably doesn't make much of a difference to you, but might be slightly easier to fix

He cannot type a message because letters type themselves in, it's clearly a digitizer problem, not a trackball issue i'm afraid.
Reflashed stock T-Mobile ROM this morning - hopefully I can get to my local T-Mobile shop at lunchtime to get them to fix it. Thanks for all your help.
and then I returned. T-Mobile said there was a long processing time for repairs at the moment, and they had no loan phones I could use whilst mine was away. Did say I could upgrade early though which was nice. Spent my lunch hour trying out several new phones (including a couple of nokias, sorry). Came back with a Motorola Defy, and a still broken Hero.

Phantom button presses! Is my phone broke?

Is my fascinate defective? Why does my back button randomly press itself? In fact, it seems like it's doing it as a long press sometimes since pressing the power button takes a random screen shot!
I've posted about this before, but this issue came from EB01. Surely others are experiencing such a thing!
This happened to me on stock DI01. I don't know why, but all of a sudden one day, it started doing those phantom presses. For me it was the back button and menu button. I also had a hard time long-pressing the home button to pull up the recent app list.
I have insurance through Verizon, so I just took it into the store, and they ordered a refurbished replacement for me. I didn't have to turn in my phone until the new one came.
It's a different story if you go directly to Samsung. Through them, you are without your phone for 6 days (2 days shipping there, 2 days repair, and 2 days shipping back), and no temporary phone is provided. I was only going to do that as a last resort, but Verizon actually came through.
The end result is that the new phone is definitely better, and I can tell there's a difference in the button response - not in a bad way, though. It's a more "solid" experience as opposed to the previous phone being more finicky.
I have this same issue as well, and have had it pop up on me well before EB01. It's not all the time, but it happens often enough that it's annoying as hell.
Anyone happen to know of a software based solution? Considering all of the rooting/etc. I've done to my phone, I don't know how feasible it is to get replacement hardware..

I believe that if you were to odin back to stock (or any official OTA update) that they wouldn't know you'd ever been rooted.
Superclean 2.4 Voodoo - VA Green
I have the same issue. In fact, it just happened a few minutes ago. Sometimes it only had one phantom press, other times it will go spastic. When the latter happens I have to press the back button to make it stop.
I'm glad I'm not the only with this issue. Looks like I'm calling for a replacement tomorrow.

That's what I did. I was rooted and removed a bunch of the VZW bloat when I first started seeing it. I ended up flashing an Odin package for stock/unrooted DI01 onto the phone to make sure that rooting didn't cause the problem. It still ended up happening on stock. I took it in to Verizon and had them look at it, and they were none the wiser. It's been a couple of months now, and I've heard nothing about my returned phone.
Both the DI01 and DL09 Odin packages should be available in the development forum. Be sure to disable voodoo (if you are using it) before you use Odin.

I just hate the idea of getting a refurbished phone. I sure hope this is a software issue.
Doesnt verizon insurance go through asurion or something like that
Blue Super Froyo
Verizon should be quite familiar with this problem at this point. This problem ran wild on the OG Moto Droid. I've had family members return their phones and within the first year get replacements per warranty (factory defect).
The problem stems from either using a charger that doesn't have a USB module (aka doesn't require you to plug the USB data cable into a charger brick) or from improperly plugging in your phone (for instance, not putting the phone in a dock completely or having the USB connection slip partially). The unusual changes in voltage kill these smartphones and cause them to almost short-circuit, resulting in the "ghost" phenomenon. Many people have had this problem within the last couple of years and have found this to be the culprit. Just google "Ghost Droid" for more information.

Verizon's insurance does go through Asurion. That's not what I did, however. I told Verizon I didn't want to make an Asurion claim (which comes with a $89 deductible). They said I could go through them for the Samsung warranty. They sent me the replacement and then I sent back my phone (like you do when you make an Asurion claim), but there was do deductible or charge for it.
Now, they might have only said this because I have the extra protection through them. I can't guarantee they will do this for everybody.

Your phone comes with a 1 year warranty from Samsung for hardware issues. Assurion picks up if the user damages the phone, like dropping it or water damage.
Update for anyone following this thread..
I got a replacement phone and restored via nandroid, ensuring identical software. The phantom button presses are gone! So, it seems the button presses are indeed a hardware failure, not software related. If you have phantom button presses, get a replacement phone and save yourself some grief.
Cheers

Ugh, I'm getting them too. Really don't feel like getting a fourth refurbished fascinate.

Dammit. I assumed it was software since this only started happening when I switched to froyo. The kernel is buggy and I figured this would go away once the devs bring us ones from proper source.
I guess my days of not safely removing from PC are catching up to me.

The only thing I've noticed on my phone is my power/sleep button sometimes randomly takes screen shots instead of going to sleep, which I thought I read was the back key sticking, is this similar to what everyone is experiencing with these phantom button presses? Mine isn't backing out of programs or anything?
I've had these phantom button presses on mine on and off since I got the phone. Even before I rooted it. I always assumed it was because the soft keys were dirty/oily and were incorrectly registering touches. Wiping off my phone has always taken care of the problem.
My fascinate has infrequently done this over the last several months. Today, the stupid thing started pressing the back button every few seconds. Rebooted several times. No improvement. Switched kernels. No improvement.
I decided to try to see if this is software or hardware. Rebooted to CWR and left it setting on one of the options. Right now it has been setting for about 10+ min and no random back buttons have been pressed. My thinking is, if this is a hardware bug it should have selected the highlighted option since the back button is used as the select in CWR.
Anyone have any ideas?
I think I might try a clean reload starting from the stock ODIN when I get home.
Phone is rooted and running SC 2.9 Voodoo Kernel, voodoo disabled.
I have this issue really bad ever since upgrading to Gingerbread...
If I use Odin to flash back to the Stock Verizon 2.2 the issue disappears, but if I flash any gingerbread, doesn't matter if its VGB or one of the CM7 nightlies, the phone presses the back and menu button pretty consistently and also if you remove the battery for any reason at all, it loses or forgets a lot of apps that you may have installed (Live Wallpapers for instance) and also takes 3-5 reboots or power down cycles to finally boot up NOT in Safe Mode.
Not sure what the hell is going on, but I may have to just Odin back to Verizon stock 2.2, root it and live with the bloatware
Oh, and this issue is persistent from my original Fascinate to the refurbished replacement that Verizon just sent me. So either they sent me a refurbished phone that has the exact same symptoms or its an issue with Gingerbread and the Fascinate.
Any suggestions?
Anybody? Bueller?
Could my stock Samsung 16gb memory card be causing this? That's the only thing that was carried over from my old phone that had the button press issues to the new refurbished one.
Has anybody made that correlation?
Bump,
Googling about this problem, it seems this is a wide spread problem with Fascinate and few other Samsung phones. No one knows of the real problem nor a fix.
It is unacceptable for Samsung not handle this problem which sounds like it's hardware related for this long.
Any more input guys?
I was about to buy the Samsung Fascinate myself but this sounds like a major problem to me.

[Q] Uh-oh, Atrix screen issue! :(

My Atrix 4g was working fine and then I set it off the the side while I worked on some homework and when I came back and tried to unlock it, nothing happened, the screen remained black although I could flick the volume up and down switch and get a vibration and a sound, it seemed to me like the device was still on and working just the screen was black. I pulled the battery and when I put it back the phone refused to boot and showed a red LED. I waited 5 min and pulled the battery again and this time the phone booted up perfectly and is still working right now, is this something I should be worried about? Should I bring it back to the store for an exchange?

Do you happen to know the exchange policy at AT&T? I have no warranty, but I've only had it for a week or so.
Also how do you know its just not a small software glitch or something that is insignificant and was a one time thing? Or do you think I should bring it back just in case.

If you bought it from AT&T then you have 30 days to return/exchange it. Tell them there is a software issue where it forces your phone to turn off. To be safe, you could call their corporate customer service at "611" and tell them the situation and they will note your account about the situation that way the reps in the store cannot turn you away.

What if I bought it from RadioShack though? They had a sale where it was only $150.. xD
Btw mine is rooted and everything, how do they check for root anyways? And in order for me to exchange it I'm guessing I have to factory reset, would that undo the root?

Radioshack should have a similar policy. You should be able to check it online.
No, a restore will NOT remove root. Which root method did you use? I believe SOC and aRoot both have unroot options. I had to return my first Atrix as well and I used Root Explorer to uninstall SU before I ran the unroot script to make sure it would be removed.
I returned my bricked atrix to radio crap and they swapped no problem

I used aRoot, out of curiosity what was wrong with your first Atrix?
I did a quick google and no one seemed to have experienced the problem that I had with the blank screen, although there seem to be no other issues and its snappy as usual. If I decided just to keep this Atrix and not go through the hassle of returning and then downloading everything and setting my theme back up and a million other personalization things I did, do you think I would regret it later?
Oh and do you think it would have anything to do with the fact I dropped my phone? I was just chilling in class and it fell out of my pocket. Lol it was like a 2 foot drop onto tile face first, although there are no visible damages aside from a scratch in the corner thats minuscule and took me like 5 min to find.
Also, the issue didn't occur until like a couple hours after I dropped it.

I brought mine back because of software issues like the battery monitor displaying the phone as charging even though it was unplugged, screen brightness was changing even though I had the auto turned off, little things that I haven't experienced on my second phone.
With yours, if you feel comfortable enough to hold onto it for awhile longer I don't see any harm in that. Radioshack gives you 30 days. There have been random reboot issues on some of the Atrix's so it might not be anything serious. I've had a couple issues with the screen freezing on me, which what could have happened on yours.

Well mine didn't randomly reboot, and the screen didn't freeze, it just blanked for awhile, I don't think its serious enough to constitute my phone as a "lemon". I'll probably end up holding on to it and seeing if anything else happens and if not then just keep it. Thanks for all the help though! :]
And if anyone else has experienced this issue or something similar, it would be awesome if you could share your experience.

Hardware Problem? [NEED HELP!]

I was in the bathroom yesterday and my Evo 4g LTE started buzzing a lot. I had no idea what was going on, and the phone was just flashing screens. It was going between my homescreen, and a long-press on the home button(that shows all the screens together). At this point, I figured it was a hardware problem, and I still think it is. The problem is, my phone is unlocked, and it's running CM10 on it. I have no idea what I should do. It always has it's case on(otterbox), and I also have only dropped it a few times in the last month, from only about 2 feet high max. The last time I dropped it was a few nights ago. Once again, it just randomly started doing this. I tried flashing CM10 again, and it didn't help, it still acts like i'm pressing the home button non-stop, even in TWRP. I really need ALL the help I can get. I cannot afford to get a new phone.
Did you flash the stock rom, that would probably let you know if it a custom rom causing the problem? If it still does it, you might need to take it in to get looked at.
Take the case off and see what happens.

I took off the case, did not fix it. I flashed stock rom and it did not fix it. Where do I need to go to get it looked at? Sprint i'm assuming?
Yeah, make sure it's a corporate store that does repairs, don't go to some third party store, they normally aren't any help.

Okay, sorry it took me so long to reply. The phone might go a day and do the homescreen thing, but the next day it might work. It hasn't done it since about 2 pm yesterday and now it started up again. I also noticed that when I press on the right side of the screen, it makes a clicking noise. Can I get it repaired even though it's s-off, unlocked bootloader, and has a custom rom on it?

A few minor issues...should I be concerned/return?

Got the Sprint Note 3 on launch day. Great phone. However, last night, I kept getting a message that said "Samsung WatchOn Has Stopped". I didn't remember turning it on, and I got this message several times. I have also had trouble getting stuff to download from the play store, but last night it finally started downloading fine. I am staying at a hotel(traveling for work), so their WiFi could be the issue there. I kept getting error 500. And I could always try removing and re adding my Google account. Last, but not least, my power button is ever so slightly crooked(power, not home). The side towards the bottom of the phone sits slightly lower than the side towards the top. Anyway, this is my first Samsung, I've always had HTC, so maybe the phone it's just built this way. Sorry to sound retentive, but the phone wasn't cheap, and I usually keep my phone's for 2+ years, do if there are any issues that warrant a return, I want to return it while I can still get a NEW replacement. Has anyone else experienced any of this? It's any of this a big deal? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or am I being a worry way for no reason?

Well I have another week to return it. I will feel it out some more, just to be sure these aren't user errors. As for the button, I dunno what to think, but it is barely noticeable, and doesn't impact functionality at all. So, maybe I am making too much of it. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced these issues. I may or may not take it back to exchange it for a new one, time will tell. I had to exchange my first EVO 3D after two weeks due to constant force closes, but the second one worked like a charm for the next 2+ years.
If you have any questions about the reliability of your Device return it ASAP. You only have 14 days to exchange from ORIGINAL purchase date and it might take a few days to figure out if your replacement is also a lemon but by then 14 will have passed and you'll be relying on the carrier to fix.

Funny you mentioned the EVO 3D, I was just thinking, had that phone came with LTE instead of Wimax I would still be using it...I loved that one more than any of the many others I have had...
The top of the phone is slightly thicker on the back due to the camera, but if you mean with the screen laying flat that could be an actual issue. As far as the play store, I know there was some issue with it a couple days ago but try clearing the cache for the play store app and if all else fails a factory reset to see if the problem persists. I came from the HTC One and I'm loving this phone, but definitely take it back if there are recurring issues.

I mean it it's uneven when looming at the BACK of the phone. When looking at the side of the phone(the top of the button), it is perfectly straight. When looking at the BACK off the phone, you can see that the button sits slightly lower on the bottom than the top. And I do mean slightly. It also presses a little more easily on the bottom, with less pressure. It doesn't feel loose or anything, and every display I have played with has had a different feel to its buttons. Some more like mine than others. I think it's because the power button Has a single point of contact, unlike the volume buttons, so most of them seem looser on one side or another...?
Got another "unfortunately, Samsung WatchOn has stopped" message this morning. Again, I didn't start this app. Probably gonna take this back for exchange.

Did that yesterday, but have gotten the message once more since. Didn't install greenify though.
Got the phone yesterday and saw the same Watchon problem. Haven't used it yet, just setting it up. The Google Play error 500 is on Google's end but it's fixed now. The home button has some play. The rear cover can be easily removed without damaging the camera cover. So far so good, not enough annoyance to warrant a return yet/
