I've done the root thing on many android devices but my Maxx is really perplexing me!!
I have installed the official ICS OTA update and am running 6.16.211.XT912 ICS 4.0.4 and rooted it with the Droid Razr Utility 1.8
I don't plan to flasch ROMS as I'm just too afraid of bricking the unit. The primary reason I wanted to root was just a few system tweaks and for Titanium Backup. I would like to make a nandroid backup just in case something goes awry. That brings me to the issue of Safestrap. I have version 2.0, which I under stand to be ICS compatible, installed. I'm just not sure how to use it and if cllicking the install recovery will mess up my system. I'm also not sure what "safe system" means.
Is Safestrap basically creating a dual boot method?
Does selecting install recovery put CWM on device and does is override default boot? Is this a problem?
Once recovery installed, how do you make a nandroid? Same way as I do on tablet or old Incredible?
Thanks!
There is a lot of literature on this. You can always use matts 1.8 utility to flash back to stock if things do not work out.

Why Safestrap when we have the BootMenu which is imho much better and much more user friendly???

Sort of... more like it saves a backup of your original state and you can switch back to it. Not a true dual boot.

Safestrap replaces CWM after installing safestrap you should not be using the CWM app..if thats what you are asking.

I just got a Moto RAZR (not the RAZR MAXX) in the mail yesterday and it came stock 6.16.211.XT912 ICS 4.0.4. I see you rooted your RAZR MAXX, but will this Droid RAZR Utility 1.8 (i found this method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769345&highlight=droid+razr+utility+1+8) work for my RAZR?
In short, yes Safestrap makes your phone dual bootable. What you'll want to do is open the app and click install recovery. Now, every time you reboot your phone you'll see a new boot menu just before your boot animation. It lasts 10 seconds. If you do nothing, it does nothing and continues to boot the phone after 10 seconds. Pressing search speeds up the process so you don't have to wait 10 seconds. To boot into CWM, press menu some time in that 10 second window. From there you can create your backup and be finished.
As long as the recovery is installed, you'll always see that boot menu which is IMO a nice convenient fail safe option for our locked bootloader devices. Since we can't boot into recovery with button commands (as you can on HTC devices) I can't think of a better option in the event you have a bad flash.
To flash a new rom you NEED TO enable safe system from within CWM. This boots the phone from the internal or external sd card so you have the ability to flash roms that a Motorola device otherwise couldn't. It has no effect on the phone rom (non safe rom) so I advise trying it out. If you don't like it, the phone rom is there and waiting. Happy flashing!

safestrap vs bootstrap and cwmd
Technically yes because safestrap is a form of cwmd. What you cannot have installed together is safestrap and BOOTSTRAP because both hijack the bootloader. If you have both installed you will soft brick your .device. Bootstrap is for people who enjoy being able to wipe their phones entirely when installing a new ROM. Safestrap lets you dual boot which is much safer, especially if your going to flash ROMS. Personally i recommend safestrap.
Safestrap and Bootstrap are both means of accessing CWM. You cannot use both at the same time. The differences are:
Bootstrap = app that reboots the phone and hijacks recovery so your phone can boot to CWM. Not capable of dual booting. The app must initiate reboot each time you want to boot to CWM.
Safestrap = app that hijacks recovery and prompts you to boot into CWM on every reboot. It's capable of booting into "safe mode" aka dual boot from sd card. After initial installation you no longer need to access the app.

I pulled the battery plugged in and booted but still the same, stuck at M logo. Why is my bootstrap not working? i used it earlier today.

Did you flash the zrecovery before you rebooted?

Might save you next time
Also if you wiped data your bootstrap will be gone.
not sure what zrecovery is?
i have the bootstrap recovery installed and have been using that for months without a hitch, just after i flashed the beats audio zip this morning (in bootstrap), i can't get it to even boot. im stuck at the M logo. and if i pull the battery and plug in, it won't even start up to bootstrap. I just want to flash my nandroid backup
i didn't wipe data, just flashed the zip. chose reboot in Bootstrap like normal and bam, stuck at M logo.....any way to force back into bootstrap? I was literally just in bootstrap 1 hr ago so i know its there....just not loading
Not that I aware of besides doing a sbf rooting again and installing bootstrap and then you can restore your nano back up.
Be sure to pull the battery for 30 sec put back and then plug in to get cwr to boot. Or Then try to access stock recov pwr on & rocker down to wipe data.
Thanks for the help!
As far as I know, the only way to get into bootstrap is through the bootstrap app itself. Which you need to be able to get into your phone to do. I do think you can get into it by rebooting while plugged in but maybe this doesnt work if you did something to mess up the startup. As was mentioned already, your only choice most likely is to SBF, root and install bootstrap again and then restore your backup.
I beg to differ. As long as charge mode was never put back to normal which is also a mistake.

To enter stock Android Recovery you just hit power button volume down...but that won't help you now...so just SBF and root then restore your backed up material through Titanium backup.... Install BSR and NANDroid back...you did make NANDroid backups I assume, if not I suggest starting to. Good luck

Thats what I thought. But the OP cant get that to work from what I get. Is that method still supposed to work if you cant even boot the phone?
As long as you do not wipe data BSR should be installed. If you pull battery and put it back in before you even try to boot plug it in to wall charger. This will take you straight to BSR before you ever try to boot. Then you can get back to your nano back up.

Stock recovery wont allow you to flash stuff to the phone or backup your ROM or stuff like that. Thats why we have a special one to do those things.
Stock is good for flashing an ota (no need to rename just make it start w/ a number so it will be first in a mess of zips at the root of your external sd)
And wiping data.

Hey guys,
I was looking forward to trying out the new JB Roms for my razr maxx and needed to update safestrap, so I went into safestrap and disabled safe system and went to restore and lo and behold, it can't find my backup. I checked the SD card and it's sitting there under "clockworkmod/backup" but safestrap just keeps telling me it can't find it. I copied over that folder to sd-ext and still no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

I take it you are coming from SS 2? It is possible that the backups arent compatible. Also its possible that the safestrap folders on your sdcard and sdcard-ext are messing with the new version of SS3.
If it were me I would just remove it all and start from scratch. If something happens and you mess SS up, I would use matts droidrzr utility and fastboot back to 211, then install the newest safestrap from hashcode's website. (How to safestrap)
If you need help with the utility I can help you
That's the problem though. I haven't been able to upgrade to SS 3.x because I can't access my stock rom from SS 2 because it won't find the backup. It's the same backup I made when I installed SS 2 so it really makes no sense. If I try and access my stock rom without doing a restore, it obviously just sits at the boot animation forever.
So I guess no one has a clue? If no one can offer any sort of idea, does anyone know where I can find a SS 2.11 backup of the razr maxx ICS rom?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but SS started using TWRP for backup at some point in place of CWM.
I would suggest using the utility to go to .211 stock. Then root and upgrade to jb.
doing so lowers the risk of loosing root when you upgrade.
And yes since he moved to 3.0 the recovery is based on TWRP since mid-October

Thanks. I guess I assumed he would read the instructions thoroughly when he downloaded the JB update.zip.
I guess I didn't explain clear enough. I am still on an ICS rom. I have NOT upgraded to JB at all. I have NOT upgraded to SS v3 at all. I am still on SS v2.11 and my backup was from when I first installed SS v2.11. I am trying to get back to my stock rom by disabling safe system and restoring the backup that I made. I can't do this because it keeps telling me that it can't find the backup when it is clearly in clockworkmod/backup.
Anyway, so using the utility to go back should be able to fix this issue?

yes the utility will fix it for you.
when i wanted to go back to the nonsafe side(stock side) I would only have to disable safe system and then reboot.
does that not work for you? ss2 doesnt support flashing to the nonsafe side, therefor no restoring cwm backups to the nonsafe side i believe.
Unfortunately no, it just sits at the boot animation screen. I figured it might have been taking a long time, but I let it sit for 30 minutes and nothing changed.

Looks like you don't have a choice.
Use the utility to fastboot to.211.
Root, then use the utility to install voodoo root keeper so you can have root when you update to jb.
Read spc hicks guide in the development section.

75% is plenty. You have something else going on. How long did it take?
Ah, I think it was just a faulty cord. I got it back to regular fastboot and ran option 1 again and it's working fine now.
I recently performed the steps to update my RAZR MAXX (XT-912 CDMA) to the OTA JB update. I had no issues. I obtained Root privileges and installed the most recent version of Safestrap for my phone (3.11). No problems detected. I then booted into Safestrap recovery and created a new ROM slot. Installed Jellycore V1.5 to it as well as Gapps. Booted to that slot and NOTHING. The screen just goes black after the Safestrap screen. So I booted back into Safestrap recovery and tried to restore my backup to that slot...same result. When the phone is rebooted, it goes to the Safestrap screen where you can select continue or recovery. If I continue (by selection or waiting the 10 seconds) the screen just goes black. I left it that way overnight thinking it might take a while but no. I've tried reinstalling Safestrap, different ROMS, and reinstalling ROMS. Any ideas? Because I need my AOKP.

bear with me, i am new to rooting the razr maxx ... i have rooted an htc thunderbolt, 3 gNexs, 2 nexus 7, and 2 galaxy s3s but i am havingw trouble with problem very similar to yours... but with a twist, i cant seem to remember all the the steps i took to produce this problem, as i was rooting my buddies razr maxx over super bowl weeekend and havent picked it up since ..... til now ... but anyways .. i did obtain root and had safestrap 3.11 installed... ok for starters the phone for one will not power on at all unless i plug it into a charger ... and when i do that i see the dual core screen and then it brings up the safestrap diabled screen and gives the option to press the menu button to reboot into recover or press the search button (or wait 10 seconds) to continue... when i press the menu button it goes to the black screen like u said ... when i wait 10 seconds it goes to the black screen and when i press the search button it goes to the black screen ... and then i end up having to use the volume down and power button to power it off (or if i unplug the charger it also powers off) ... when i plug it in again it automattically turns on and goes to the dual core screen and starts the process over ... i am however still able to get in to the boot menu ... and i tried to go into recovery mode that way and now the screen is stuck on the dual core screen with it plugged into the wall charger.... im thinking i have multiple issues ... one battery issue and i must have went wrong somehwere trying to flash a rom ...but wnho knows .. not me lol .... please please help ... we can do a google hangout and try to resolve this issue if you are willling ..... thanks in advance

if you boot to a blank screen and it stays there more than a minute or so after the kexec vibrate, you need to reboot to SafeStrap - switch to stock and boot it (optionally uninstall and reinstall recovery from the SafeStrap app). Then reboot and select your ROM slot and it should boot fine.

Are you wiping cache, dalvik, system, and factory reset after you create the rom slot? I had issues with a few ROMs until I wiped everything before installing a rom to a new slot. Also, you can run into this if you are trying to install a ROM into a ROM slot that had a different ROM installed on it previously. If that is the case just delete the slot and recreate it. (Oh and make sure it is not the stock rom slot that you are deleting, that would not be good) One last thing, some ROMs only work on ROM slot 1.

HELP!!!!
I'm a semi-amateur at rooting, and I'm worried I bricked my wife's Droid Razr MAXX. Here's what happened:
A year ago, I rooted her Razr and installed safestrap, which came with its TWRP interface. It had been running slow, so yesterday I said I'd put her on a new ROM. I installed CM 10.1.3 and everything seemed to go smoothly. After I'd finished the install of the ROM, using safestrap and TWRP, I reinstalled all her apps and everything.
Then I reinstalled SuperSU, VooDoo OTA Rootkeeper, and Safestrap v2.11. I ran safestrap and noticed it said it didn't have custom recovery installed, even though I knew it did. I don't know why, but I hit the button to install custom recovery.
Well, her phone was being screwy so she reset it at work. It then began to bootloop, and she turned it off (power + vol up + vol down). I turned it on, the safestrap splash screen showed, and I hit "menu" to boot into recovery.
Instead of TWRP, I am getting the green and black stock recovery screen. Uh oh, right? So I don't know what to do now. I wiped cache and dalvik to see if it'd reboot, but still, it bootloops.
Do I hit "Disable Safestrap (if stuck in recovery)"? I'm afraid to do anything at this point, out of fear of bricking her device. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Download RSD Lite 5.7 and download the 4.1.2 firmware here
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/cdma_spyder/list.php make sure you have a good charge on the phone, (it won't charge in fastboot) then open the firmware in RSDlite extract, put your phone in fastboot mode (Vol+ Vol- power select fastboot) plug the phone into your computer using your micro USB that came with the phone. Wait for files to extract then flash. Hope this helps. Any further questions you can send me an IM at [email protected]

Did you try to install SS from within CM? SS is intended to be installed and managed on stock. Did you install CM on a new slot in recovery?
Also, the latest SS version is 3.60.
For future reference, your actions should've been these:
1. Uninstall custom recovery using whatever SS you have installed on stock.
2. Uninstall SS and install newest SS version.
3. Install custom recovery using the newly installed SS.
4. Reboot into TWRP, create NEW slot and flash ROM.
Right now, I'd recommend what nickmoogo said above - start fresh, and do everything in order this time around, good luck!

That's exactly what I did. I have no idea why I did it either. Since I was on v2.11, clearly it's been a while since I touched her phone. So there's no way other than starting over from stock firmware, huh? If I could just get back to the TWRP interface I'd be much more comfortable, but I know SS's version of TWRP is unique. If starting fresh is the safest bet, that's what I'll do. Thanks guys!

Someone more knowledgeable than myself could maybe advise more in this case. Start fresh is what *I* would've done.
Flashing stock is not that hard of a procedure, and after installing some roms and finding the one that works the best for you, you won't be seeing much of stock anyways, I know I don't.

Links in the index, but you need to use correct version
Bootloader version must match, or at least it cannot be downgraded.

Hi i'm abit of a noob at installing custom ROMS, I used a CM10.2 nightly ROM and now my phone wont load past the first flash screen "Dual Core Technology". It loads that screen for aprox. 5 seconds then dies.
I also have the added problem of my phone not booting into recovery so I cant install a stock ROM.
Someone HELP MEEE!!
UPDATE! I can now access boot mode menu and all subsequent menus, including android system recovery. but still cant get onto CWM. and can not reboot my razr, loads motorola logo for 10 seconds then dies.
RSD lite back to stock, and use safestrap or bmm instead of cwm. Preserves your stock rom slot. Also, you are always able to flash to stock which is 4.1.2. You avoid the problem of not being able to downgrade. You'll be flashing through AP Fastboot mode.
If you absolutely have to use cwm because you need all of the internal memory available, don't use nightly releases. Use stable/milestone/release candidate versions.
The good news is you have access to your boot menu, so your phone is still in good shape. Make sure the battery is fully charged before flashing with RSD.

Ok, well Ive got RSD Lite open and my phone connected in AP Fastboot but nothing is showing on my computer, is it on my computer that it recognises the device or is it simply on my phone?

The Wipe!
°It's all about the Wipe°
Ha, what I ended up doing was taking it back to the shop and played dumb...not sure if I should be insulted at the fact they thought I wasn't the type of person to rootmy phone or whether to take it as a blessing. But rocking HTC One X now, thanks for your help tho
