Hi there...
I'm having a problem with my S2, so here's my questions in case you can guide and help me.
I'm went on a trip to Germany and I took my S2 with me. I had the phone on Airplane Mode 99% of the time. I turned off Airplane Mode once or twice, and the phone got Reception (signal), but immediately I turned Airplane Mode on again. I didn't need calling or messaging. Then I bought a prepaid chip from T-Mobile, turned off cell phone, installed the chip, turned on phone but phone didn't "recognize the sim".
So, I turned it off again, insert my original sim (the one I use in Costa Rica), turned on the phone, but again, the phone didn't "recognize the sim". I tried those 2 Sims on another phone in the "T-Mobile Store" and both sims worked perfectly. My S2 also showed a "blank IMEI" fater dialing *#06#.
Now I'm in Costa Rica, and the phone still "don't recognize my SIM" and the "blank IMEI" still shows.
Someone knows what can I do? Im completely lost. I found this tool and this guide. Do yo think I can solve this problem with any of those? Or, what do you recommend me?
My phone is completely stock, no root, no custom roms or anything like that. And it's not on guarantee. I'm pretty much a noob, hope you can help me or guide me...
Thanks a lot in advance!
It seems like your baseband has lost, you can check your baseband in settings-about phone, if the baseband is unknown try to reflash another modem,if you are a newbie, ask for experienced one to help.
The links you provide are not recommended for newbie, and efs backup is no use for this situation that you have no any backups, you can try reflash baseband, that's safer.

Thanks for your answer. You are right, my Baseband is Unknown. So, in order to reflash the baseband I need to reflash the Modem? Will you recommend me to reflash the original Modem or another one?

Try reflashing the original one.. Bcoz that is the one which worked best for u!! Dunno if u changed the orginal baseband?? U hav a custom ROM?

It's some random bug it happens with some people, happened with me, wasted 1h trying to restore EFS several times, wipe data, flash modem. The solution: wait. Just wait and it might work again. May be the day, the carrier may be screwed,

Won't work. [usually, with luck]
No, I don't have a Custom Rom... I don't know how or why the Baseband changed to Unknown. Ok,I'll try with the original modem. The only way I know how to flash things it's using CWM... it's that ok or should I do it with a different method?
And another question, someone told me that with a Hard Reset, the problem should be solved... do you agree or disagree?
Thanks a lot!

Damn... so bad! Yeah, I read some people with similar problems also in the S2. But waiting it's not so good, I mean, my S2 might be screwed forever? What about a Hard Reset as I wrote before?

There is no harm in trying hard reset, backup whatever you can and try hard reset. If it fails :
for CWM you need to root your device and install CF root kernel first. You should try flashing baseband through Odin. You can find the baseband/modem files and tutorial here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Its far easier than going through CWM, install samsung drivers on pc and you are ready to flash. Do read carefully every step. Good luck.
Ok, thanks a lot. I appreciate your help. I'll try all the above and let you know how it goes.

Hey guys, I'm in desperate need of some assistance here.
I have an international Galaxy S3 i9300, rooted and with CWM.
I flashed Criskelos XXDLH8 ROM yesterday, and I followed the instructions to the dot.
The flash seemed to be problem free.
However, once the phone booted and i was on the new ROM, i tried to make a call, but I kept getting an error message saying "not registered on network".
I instantly freaked out, and wiped my phone+cache, and flashed stock Samsung ICS (XAALE8) via Odin.
The phone booted normally into the stock ICS. But instead of seeing signal bars on the status bar, all I can see now is just a circle with a line through it . :crying:
I did some research on the net, and didn't really find anything to help me, which is why I'm here, seeking ANY help from you guys.
I'm freaked out guys! Any assistance would be SO appreciated! thank you!
don't panic
go settings >wireless and networks more settings > access point names
make sure you have something in there
mine says Vodacom ( internet)
look up apn for your area.
otherwise you can try flashing a different modem for your region or even try another region from here

But my problem arent my APN settings.. I am not able to obtain access to the network anymore All i can see instead of signal bars is a circle with a line through it :crying:
And yes, Ive tried flashing different modems, and ive tried various ICS kernels as well.. no luck
My IMEI has not changed or been deleted (EFS seems to be intact), in case you were wondering.. hmm...
I have no idea whats wrong with my S3
hmmm try perhaps restoring efs folder from backup
sorry seems like you've tried all my ideas.
could be something really silly like sim card wrong way or not nicely in check that.

Just restored my EFS folder from a backup i made.. no luck.. hmm..
My sim card works on my spare phone, so thats not the problem.. do u think it might be an issue with my sim card slot?
I mean, i didnt physically drop the phone or anything, this issue seems to have originated after flashing that custom ROM...
Thanks anyways for your suggestions mate, appreciate everything I really hope someone can help me out here, im kinda lost..Sigh
Im also encountering the same proble. But instead, i have network signal (there are signal bars), but i am un able to send/receive messages and calls. I still have the same IMEI number but my Serial Number became 00000000.

hey dude,
i tried pretty much every software fix i could find.. but no luck i returned the phone and got it replaced. Apparently, there was an issue with the radio on the motherboard.
Goodluck mate!

Are you sure the firmware is suitable for your model for your phone's factory? There are at least three regions of producing Galaxy S3 International version. Some final product made in Vietnam and Korea has a lot of problems and need to be changed to the board made in China due to software problem. You should try using the "Firmware Upgrade And Initialization" in the "Tools" in the Samsung KIES 2.5 because it will download the latest official firmware according to your model and serial number and it will wipe your phone at the same time.

Thanks for your support.
I tried to repair using the firmware update and initialization, but I could not find exactly where it is. I could reach a pop-up window saying that if my phone had a problem it would be listed in this window... Not sure if I am doing it correctly.
Do you have any tutorial link/post where I can find the proper instructions for it? I am familiar with odin, but not kies...
Thanks in advance!

You can find this function in your Samsung KIES 2.5 which is the software to be installed in your computer. Then you will see the top bar, one of them is Tools and you will find the function in the Tools menu.

It sounds very much like a locked phone that was unlocked in a suboptimal way
Unless you have the original EFS (on which you might try to do a cleaner unlock) you will be "condemned" to always need a patched modem.
The short story is that network locking is done in a protected/checksumed database in the EFS partition and some older unlocks were not even attempting to keep the database "clean" - they were forcing a flag there but since there was some other check at a later time you need a special "patch" in the GSM modem code - that is located in a different partition and might be a little different from one country/carrier to another. Unfortunately the modem is (usually) updated with major ROM updates, so you have now lost that patch - but you can take a look below for a fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601
The bottom line is that (unless you restore original EFS and do a very clean unlock) you will always have to re-apply the modem after you program a new full ROM!
so i flashed CM9 and i have no more service - then flashed back stock and no change -
i have imei and all - but i cant make the network working. phone is mine, purchased form vodafone, but because it falled - slightly cracked screen it has no warranty anymore.

This flashing stock, did you do it through CWM or ODIN? If you have not tried ODIN yet I would go that route, could just be you need a stock modem.

The EFS is fine if you have IMEI, if you have only flashed each ROM once through ODIN you have hope. Try an ODIN flash again. Can you get to recovery to do full wipe first?
Try EFS Pro Here and download to your PC then run it. You will probably need to use your own wireless to get Busybox (free on Play Store) and run it on your phone - if the phone will not go to wireless, DL the files to your PC then copy BB over to the phone in Windows Explorer and run it on the phone.
Then run EFS Pro on your PC (with phone connected by USB, but it will prompt you) and there are a couple of options there to try to see if you can recover things. (NV Recovery and Repair NV Data) - I think the NV Recovery uses info on the phone (.bak file) while repair tries to rebuild the info.
Good luck. Maybe read through the thread first or contact the thread OP if you have questions about EFS Pro processes...

I don't think this will help with the Serial issue, but maybe for the service all you need is the APN/Service info from Vodaphone? Go to [Settings] [More Settings] [Mobile Networks] and check both Access Point Names and Network Operators.
I flashed a ROM and found I had problems so I went to a Telstra page, entered my phone number and it sent me a text with a security code - when I entered that it sent me an install that connected all my services again. Maybe Voda has similar? Or even just a page with APN info?

Beyond what I know so far, sorry. If it was me I'd be making sure I have back-ups of everything I can think of (Data, System, Nandroid, EFS) then I would start from clean phone - wipe everything in recovery, factory reset etc. then load as close as possible to the original Stock for the phone. If that doesn't do it, with official stock and counters etc. I'd go to vendor and ask what gives. I'd start with the service provider and if they can't help, phone vendor, then failing that, Samsung.
Maybe some of the more experienced here can assist otherwise...

Hey guys, I need help reviving my I9100. I had it rooted and running CM for over a year, always upgrading to the latest nightlies when out of a sudden it started to lose network connection. Now it doesn't get any connection at all, no matter what I do....
Here are a few things I have done (not necessarily in that order):
- searched the forums for similar posts - didn't find one that matches my exact problem
- restaured a few different backups from when everything was working with CWM
- flashed older versions of CM (all the way back to CM7) with CWM
- flashed the original factory ROM with Odin
- flashed a few different modems with CWM
- factory reset, data wipe, cache wipe, fix permissions, etc. with CWM
- used GetRIL to fix RIL (tried a few different ones with each different modem flashed)
- tried my SIM card in other phones and it works
- tried other working SIM cards in my phone and it doesn't work
Not sure what else I can try before assuming it's a hardware error....
Everything else works fine - WiFi, Bluetooth.... basically my phone is now an iPod lol...
TIA
If your SIM works in other phones than the SIM is not the problem.
If your phone doesn't work with other SIMs - that's you clue right there. Is your phone locked to a specific carrier? If so, try other SIMs from same carrier. If the phone is factory-unlocked and doesn't accept other SIMs - it's a hardware issue.
Edit: Please check if *#06# shows your iemi.

My phone is carrier locked but the other SIM I tried was from the same carrier, so it should have worked. I have the unlock code anyways, just never had the need to unlock it. If anyone thinks it might help with the diagnosis I can find another carrier's SIM to unlock the phone and try it out.

Yes it does.
If your SIM worked in other phones from same carrier, but no SIM works in your device, I sense a hardware fault.
Don't rush unlocking it if you plan to have your carrier to repair the phone. It might disable your warrenty or flag your device as "tampered with".
Again, if no SIM seems to work in the device and the iemi is NOT blacklisted (for some reason), it's a hardware fault.

My phone is not under warranty, which is the reason why I really need to try everything possible to fix it. Otherwise I'll have to buy a new one out of my own pocket...
Is there any chance a bad Modem and/or RIL combination might be the problem here? Would flashing through CWM instead of ADB (which I haven't tried yet) make a difference?
Alright, this is what I should do:
- Sim unlock your phone.
- Make sure you do a full wipe.
- Flash a stock rom.
If you still have no reception, then its probably a hardware fault.
Now you could do 2 things from here on. Either you use your phone for listening to music or you open up your phone. Inside your phone there is a white cable. This is your atenna cable, take it off and connect it again. Test your phone now with your simcard. If it still doesnt work, try reversing the cable. Try again if it doesnt work. Try this procedure a few times.
If it works you are lucky, if it doesnt work you have a serious problem.
Opening up your phone is really easy, just search Youtube for instructions.
Hardware issue? Easy now....no need to rush things out.
@OP where did you get the unlock code? From your carrier itself or third party?
You've tried a lot of modems, are you sure you don't wanna try 3 or 4 more?
When you look for a network, does it even see the available ones?

Sure! which ones do you suggest? And how should I do it right? I've always just flashed them with CWM and never had any problems. Initially I only flashed the files codeworkx made available to flash with CM, but once I got this problem and couldn't fix it I flashed a few different ones from here. Does it make a difference if I flash them with ADB instead? I haven't tried that...

No, doesn't find anything. It even feels like it is not even searching at all. I remember a few times before it would take forever to find all the networks (did it a few times when travelling)... but now it says "searching" for a few seconds and nothing - back to the "available networks" screen without giving me any results.
Sure sounds like a modem thing.
There's a thread filled with modems in the original android section, you could look there.
You've never been to jb leak's land?
It's a good international modem, might work. It's LS6 I think. Feel free to try the whole ROM, can't hurt right?
You can also flash them with odin.
Sent from the little guy
OK, here is something I don't get:
Downloaded the LS6 modem, flashed with CWM, wiped cache/dalvik, reboot. Still no signal. Then, just for curiosity, I opened GetRIL. It showed me a RIL mismatch:
RIL: XXLQ6
Baseband: XXLS6
So I click to download and install the correct RIL (couldn't hurt right?). After download/install I reboot, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot, and still no signal. But now, when I go to to System Settings >> About Phone my Baseband Version is "unknown".... not even GetRIL recognizes it anymore.
Flashed CM nightly again to get things back. Now I have my baseband back (XXLS6) but still no signal.
@gastonw -> I don't pay much attention to leaks since I have been using CM Nightlies. But I'm downloading the I9100XWLSD ROM from the Official Firmwares thread to flash with Odin... let's see what happens...
Edit: Instead of matching the RIL to the baseband I tried the opposite - flashed the XXLQ6 modem. Now GetRIL shows me a perfect match.... and still no signal.
Try stock to see if things fall back to place.
Once it's fixed you can cyanogen mod tha phuck outta the device
Now, I've suggested JB leak (lsj) because of the "International" tag, you are now downloading nordic, so that could cause trouble (I'm in Uruguay and it works just fine tho).

Tried XXLSJ.... nothing.....
Any other ideas? :crying:
yeah, back up EFS folder and nuke your phone.
(Really, search for nuke script here at xda).
I still don't think this is hardware related.

Bro search EFS folder corruption. I wouldn't nuke anything yet incase a custom rom or kernel has automatically backed it up. Baseband unknown and imei number unknown all point to EFS problem.

If you've tried everything else, I suggest you take it to Service Centre near you. Looks like that fall is to be blamed.
P.S. Please post device related issues in their specific forums. That way you will get faster and better answers! :good:

Thanks for quick reply and sorry for the wrong post,i will take it to service center though i live in island where there is no good service center i need to travel by sea to get to good service center by nextweek thanks once again Regard:good:
I think you've lost your IMEI! here is a guide for recovering it. If you didn't root your phone to void your warranty, it's better to take it to a service center then.
This thread might help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021

i tried that link but unfortunately it didnt work may be is because i didnt have backup of esf files i missed some of the files like .nv_data i only have nv_data.bak,
So, your SIM card lost contact when the phone hit the floor and then instead of trying to remove the SIM card and put it back in you went and flashed the phone to solve the problem and that resulted in loosing IMEI number?
The Custom Rom you installed didn't make backup of your EFS folder?

yes exactly when the phone hit the floor and then instead of trying to remove the SIM card and put it back in i went and flashed the phone to solve the problem and that resulted in loosing IMEI number, but before i flashed it i made a backup of my rom using twrp but after this crash i restore my rom using the same twrp but my phone hang on booting,i was using ApoloJb_4.8_Extremev2_twrp kernel
the phone is acting very strength now,i found out even when i installed stock rom, my files are still on the phone,i used odin flashed it,please can any one provide link for me on how to fresh install stock rom and clear everything on the phone
How to install stock rom ? Search. This has been covered here thousands of times over the past two years, I'm not about to regurgitate it because you can't be bothered searching. Get a stock rom for your carrier/country from Samfirmware, then read the guides/tutorials stickied near the top of the General section.
If you want this fixed it's going to take a bit off effort on your part, we can't do everything for you.
Have you
1) Try another SIM card?
2) Look at the mobile network setting? Look for any abnormal setting? can search the mobile provider etc?
3) Try to flash another modem driver?

Hi, to add on, maybe you should tried again flashing with different modem/radio. The different ROM that you flashed may be using the same modem/radio and they may not work on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
This link seems to have mentioned various modem/radio for S2. You may want to try it. You may want to refer to another working S2 and check out what is the working modem/radio working well in your area. Then you flash in the same radio/modem.
If this still does work, it may be really the dropping of your phone has kill some physical part of your phone?

still don't work? strange!
just now i experienced the similar issue like yours, no signal bar. this happen after my phone become no respond to any key press. i have to hard power up through long press. when it power up i then see that there is no signal.
so i quickly go to recovery and flash a Modem/radio that i downloaded earlier.
after flash and it booted with good signal.
but my cause of issue i believe is kernel related as i just flash a dorimanx kernel yesterday.

Hi,
I got my mum an S2 a few months ago. She was able to use it properly until recently where the phone wouldn't recognise the sim. So i got the sim card changed and the problem persisted.
It kept on saying 'not on a registered network'. I read on the forum that the EFS may need changing. But unfortunately i never made a backup before. so i was wondering if anyone can help me to try to fix it. The IMEI is the same as whats written behind the battery.

Try to change the modem if the problem still there. Then try to vheck it in stock rom.
Go to google and check imei isn't blocked mate. Also delete apn and restore them first.
Thanks for the reply mate.
Quick question. when i flash the modem. do i need to flash the modem for the current firmware again or do i just download any other modem and flash?

if youe phone is rooted then flash it for, recovery not from odin.
regards.
I Just rooted the phone. I cannot find the modem.bin anywhere in recovery.
I managed to solve the problem. I read a few threads where people said they had the problem when they had a pin for the sim card. so i disabled the pin code and there u go, i was able to make and receive calls and messages. all good! thanks all.
