hi guys, i took a look around the forum regarding high lvls of noise in the pictures in low light conditions, but mine just seems to be worse! this pic was taken on auto, in a corner of the room. 5.22pm, with the sunlight behind me. this happens in the video too; other videos taken at night(on youtube) that i've seen seem to be almost grain free. should i get a replacement?

I think some of you guys expect to much from a mobile phone camera, this is not a DSLR or EOS. The camera makes descent pictures with sufficient lighting but not in the dark or darker twilight condition.

i scoured the whole forum, and i've seen pics with better quality in worse conditions..and apparently this is due to the firmware version(Z being inferior samsung sensor, G sony). double checked with friends who have good/bad pics and their firmware versions so im pretty sure now. just sent an email to samsung...i'm pretty pissed about this. can this be considered fraud?! same price for inferior products -_-"

Sony has a better camera, especialy with low lighting. The best camera phone is still the N8. No it`s not fraude because you buy a phone as it is, not as you want it to be.
check camera settings.
Try manually selecting a lower iso.. that will reduce the noise, but results in a darker shot or longer shutter speed.
You can't just post a picture without specifying the iso and shutter speed to tell if the camera is taking worse pictures.. especially since every environment is different.

Yes that's true! But my HTC ONE S and the oldest GS2 makes better picture than my GS3!
I hope SAMSUNG will fix it...

true that...i'll keep that in mind as i try to take more test shots. but the video should be obivous too, right? since theres no mode or such for the video. other youtube videos i've seen of indoors have close to no noise, but it runs rampant in mine.

Like I said, Auto doesn't mean anything.. people need to specify the same setting to compare photos. The metering from the camera can easily be thrown off with a bright light or dark area causing the camera to select different ISO/shutter speeds even at the same location. Different camera firmwares between units may also cause for different 'auto' settings. Even using different camera apps can effect the image quality and settings.
I just took a peek at your photo and the file info showed that it was shot at 1600iso. That would explain all the noise and why your image seems 'brighter' than the photo you found as 1600iso is very high (I think highest). I can't even get my camera to shoot below 800iso even in the darkest settings (not that I'd want to). That 800-1600iso jump makes a big impact on image quality.
On the photo you found, the camera info also wasn't available so the picture might even be edited. I'm going to guess however that it was shot at 800iso.. and definitely much less than your 1600.
So I can't say there's anything wrong with your images you provided as I would expect that type of quality on those settings.

do u have antishake and auto contrast ON? if yes turn them off and when u take a pic u have to be REALLY still, otherwise the pics will be blurry, also u can try taking a pic with HDR mode, it makes a huge difference

Off-topic here: Isn't the new Lumia 808 better at taking pictures than the N8?
On-topic: my SGS3 also takes bad pictures on low light, but I have yet to see anything other than a full-blown camera do otherwise. It does seem to get better with any of the following:
HDR Shooting Mode
Night Scene Mode (slower shutter)
Manually set lower ISO (takes darker pics)
You would have same result if the condition and settings are the same...
Every image will become worst if it has high ISO... Manually lower your ISO and you will have a better image... You may need a better lighting for this... I just dont know if it's possible to control manually the hutter speed of galaxy s3 for low ISO settings?

will let you control the shutter speed.
But in my exprince the photos arnt that good . i have tried only indoors.
it produce like BW pics.
But then i am no expert in shutter timers and such. but you can try it.

Did this morning while I was comparing the pictures with my galaxy nexus, you just need to be careful some pictures will look like crap after this, one thing I hate is taking pics in the dark with this phone it doesn't focus like the nexus pictures look blurry, any suggestions?

I found that you can actually tap the screen on the subject you want to focus on and the phone will make a sound and focus accordingly to what you tapped...

In dark light conditions does work but doesn't turn on flash so is just focusing on the dark which ain't helpfull at all

i found that it's better if i make sure the flash is on, rather than auto...
maybe a software fix will be in the works

The main problem is that the display is oversaturated. Washing out the pictures you take won't help the display problem.
PS: That thread is about the display saturation, not the camera saturation. There are a couple of camera posts in it, but they are off-base.
I just shot some test images of an X-Rite Digital Color Checker SG reference target.
I shot with 5500K lights and with just the camera's flash, with normal saturation and with the saturation turned down one click. I let the camera use automatic color balance, as there is no setting for my 5500K lights.
I then opened the images in PhotoShop 6 and took readings off the various color and grayscale patches.
With the saturation set normally, the images were slightly oversaturated, but not bad. The gray scales were very good on the whites, but as you get darker, they have a lot of green fall-off.
I think the camera shoots well enough. The green fall-off may be partly due to the automatic white balance trying to cope with my 5500K lights, but is is visible in the flash images too. It's not bad.
Taking one click of saturation out definitely ruins the images. It's far too much. If you could take out a tenth of a click, it would be pretty close to perfect.

I havn't noticed any oversaturation of this display. The only place I notice it is in the camera app.
Lol its a cell phone camera not a Canon 7D. I really think alot of people are starting to expect way too much from cell phone cameras lol.

As I said above, I have tested the camera and it is fine. It's the best cell phone camera I have ever used or tested.
The display is not fine, but people keep confusing the display problem with a camera problem.
Since the OP quoted and referenced a display problem thread in this camera thread, I thought I would try to clear things up. The advice quoted by the OP is bad advice.
So again ... the camera is fine. Don't try to "fix" what's not broken.
IMO it's not the camera that saturates the pics it's the screen. When I tranfer my pictures on to my mac they look fine. If you browse pictures on Facebook with the phone you get the same oversaturation of color. Somene should work on a fix for the screen not the camera.

Yeah the display is a bit saturated but overall im satisfied with the display especially the viewing angles!

While its obvuious that you know more about photography than I do, I tend to disagree slightly with your statement. When I mms pictures to others with phones including iPhone 4s, ET4G, and NS4G the oversaturation of pink hues is still present. In addition, I believe if this was solely an issue of the screen then this oversaturatuon would be present across the board and not isolated to photographs taken with the on-board camera.

Yeah, pictures of my hands and arms look all bright pink, even when I view them on my laptop or desktop or tablet. In reality my skin is olive-ish and certainly not bright pink.
I am no expert at screens or photos so I'm really not sure what is going on with the pics.
The display oversaturation is constant, not just when using the camera. Watch some video on it.
The camera is a bit off, as I said above, but I think it's not bad.
Also, I have only tested my phone, I am sure there are some out there that are better and some that are worse.

Mine seems to be ok! But the thing is I don't have high standards for my phone camera. As I don't use it much sadly! I hope you get an easy fix for it!
I am having the same issue. I can very rarely get barcode scanning apps to work.

Maybe you have a bad sensor? Or your lens could be dirty. Fog underneath it? Go to where you bought it and complain to get a new one and see what they do. Mine is perfect, for a phone anyway.

The gs3 is a bit more advanced camera , and along with that the user must be a bit more advanced, and I'm also having to hear this myself. With the pic you took for example, you should very used hdr mode and keep a very steady hand. What hdr is for is when you have a mixed lighting situation like the one in your pic(bright & dark, or a sunny day but in the shade) it will actually take two pics & blend them to get it right. Try googling galaxy s3 camera tips & you will have to read & study it a bit, but you will have much more user control. Once you've figured it out you will have to make adjustments for each pic according to the environment, but the pics will be of pretty high quality. I hope I've helped you some.
I have a Sprint 32gb S3 and my camera works great. One of the best smartphone cameras I've used so far. I do notice that on all my smart phones that I'll regularly have a finger print on my camera lens, so I always be default wipe off the lens before i use the camera. (i do really miss my dedicated camera button though)

I attached 3 images from a hike we did on Sunday. 1 HDR and 2 Single shot pictures.
I'll play around with the setting and see if I can get it dialed in. The main issue I have found is in low light, or in mixed light like you said, but even outdoors, some pictures are awesome, some are just like pictures from my first camera phone.

Yes, the settings are a bit tricky but I'm learning how to use them slowly but surely. But wow, I wish I was on that hike, that is a beautiful scenery!

I've also discovered that for myself, when taking a picture of an object or person less than maybe 3 feet away(give or take) I use macro mode & manually focus to get a nice shot with pretty distinctive details. I especially find them nice when I edit them with the Samsung photo editor app & turn them into Grey scale.

yeah it was an awesome hike. Its called donut falls in utah. Im sure there are videos and pictures if you look around.
I know a lot of folks with the international phones had some of the same issues with the camera. Not sure if its related or not.

Yeah I've been lurking there. I can't get my camera to take decent pictures. Especially like has been mentioned, in low light. The gs2 camera is insanely better. Compared to the gs2 and the iphone4s my gs3 is like my first camera phone. LOL I hope it's just a software thing...and not a hardware.
I notice some noise every now and then, usually only in low light settings. For the most part my S3 takes amazing pictures. This is easily the best camera I have ever seen on a smartphone. Night and day difference compared to my S2.

Yeah I think there is for sure something wrong with the camera.
The attached pics should be much better than that.......
My pictures do not look like that. It looks like there is more noise in the S2 shot but less blur so perhaps the S3 defaults to a lower iso setting and slower shutter speed hence more blur. Check your iso settings. There's also an antishake option, Im not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure it bumps up the iso to 1600 (normal max is iso 800) and limits the shutter speed to no slower than 1/30 (with anti-shake off it's 1/15)

from what I have noticed, pictures up close seem fine.....anything further than like 3 feet or so......total blur. It's almost like the camera is stuck in the "up close" mode, or like it won't re-focus.
So I was trying to take a picture of my son sleeping on my wife's lap tonight. There was a light on in the bedroom, but it was too dark to take a picture without the flash. I opened the camera app and without adjusting any settings, tried to take several pictures. The flash was set to AUTO and it did activate each time I clicked the shutter button, however the actual picture would not be taken until the flash had already gone off. I tried 4 images with the flash set to AUTO and 4 images with the flash set to ON. Only 3 of the 8 images were actually captured while the flash was still visible. So there is an obvious issue with the timing of the flash and the shutter not being synchronized.

Turn off continuous shooting. I had the same problem.
I wasn't shooting multiple shots at the time, but I will give that a try. Thanks!

I wasn't using continuous mode at the time, just taking single pictures. I will try disabling the continuous mode option though.
Any one have a comment on why the image quality is so bad though?

I haven't had the flash sync problem anymore either. A simple reboot seems to have fixed that. Are you seeing any quality issues though?

honestly it doesnt look "too" bad but it does make the world look a bit lopsided
No the quality and the sync is fine, but at low light, the quality is ok but not not perfect.

Same Watercolor issue
I have been trying to get a good picture out of this camera and I keep reading reviews where people say it rivals the iPhone, which is ridiculous. The photos look smeared and filtered. I cleaned my lens, tried every setting in every configuration and it still looks horrible. This is an example of a 100% zoom. All pictures take on this quality its super annoying.
Edit: These images were not taken with digital zoom. All images were cropped at 100% to show quality of the pictures.
My front facing camera seems to be fine though... so wtf?

Those images were not taken with digital zoom. They are just cropped at 100% to show the quality of the images.
Yep, that's how my pictures look too. If I can't figure this out in the next week, I'm going to have to return my X+. Not sure if I'll try another one or just switch to another device.
Pretty sure you're looking at what would have been an really grainy picture, and HTC knows everyone hates grainy pictures. So HTC tried to dial in what they thought would be an aesthetically pleasing image filter that summarizes colors and sort of substitutes "grainy" with "splotchy". I only really see it on lowlight pictures and if I zoom in real close.
I have a lot of reference pics of this one corner where the sidewalk meets the road outside my office where I go to smoke. I used to be a flashaholic on my HTC Inspire (AKA America's Desire HD), and I would compare camera shots of this one corner to see how the camera software on different ROMs handled it. during the day I can get direct sunlight and shade, so I have a ton of reference material. I can say with the "watercolor effect" you're really not missing out on much. It really is just "watercolor" instead of "grainy".
I think compression has a lot to do with it too. I think HTC probably has JPEG compression dialed in higher than we normally would, and the watercolor masks artifacts as well.
All that nay-saying aside, It does murder HDR shots. I'm looking forward to a time when either HTC hands us more ability to tweek settings and/or releases enough source for devs to manipulate the image chip. Sometimes I just want to save what the sensor sees.

You can easily see the effect in this picture taken at a distance of a foot or two with the flash on. Definitely far from low-light. You might have to zoom in a bit to see it, but not past 100%. My wife would kill me for posting this by the way! She's pregnant and not very happy with me taking any pics at all!

so one thing i noticed is that the camera doesn't light up the flash to focus when you have the flash on like most other phones do (the S3 is one)
this makes low light shots 10x worse on the DNA than the S3 for example. If there was a way to make the camera flash while focusing so it can actually get that thing in focus in the dark, then i believe low light pictures would come out much better.
i've tried Camera JB+ but it's the same as the stock...wonder if theres a cmaera app out there that uses the flash while focusing? any thoughts?

you can also notice how soft the DNA seems...which is the post-processing "auto enhance" crap that HTC forced us to use on this camera. on my Rezound, i always turned that off because it looked awful, and now they're not giving us a chance to.
I'm very interested in the answer to this, as I think that low-light shots with flash are absolute garbage on the DNA. I love everything about the phone except for that. I think even my old Blunderbolt did better.

the big problem here is Auto ISO. do me a favor, turn the ISO to 200, and then try to take a low-light photo with flash. It may be very hard to focus on exactly where you want, but i guarantee there will be MUCH less noise. the ISO over-compensates, and at auto, its very grainy. i took pitch black shots last night at iso 200 and 400 with flash on, and to my surprise there wasn't much noise.
also, turn your sharpness up +1. this helps compensate for HTC's built in auto-enhance, which tends to "blur" the background out to try to get rid of noise..the rezound had this too, and i always had it off because it looks terrible. unfortunately, on the DNA, you can't turn it off yet.
I know it's not the solution you were looking for, but on my Rezound if I were taking very low light shots I'd turn on my flashlight app first, so the flash would be on permanently. The phone would then both focus with and take the photo with the flash on.
Until such time as a solution is found, feel free to try my hassle of a work-around haha

hey thanks for the tip! what app did you use to do it? that would be great, but unfortunately, the flashlight shuts off the second i enter the camera app :\
It might just be part of the ROM I'm on, but I use the flashlight toggle from the quick-settings pull down menu. If that's the case, then I apologize for getting your hopes up haha.
ahh dang! yeah, tiny flashlihgt doesn't let me keep it on when going into the camera app

and change white balance to flourescent, this will make photo not yellowish.
Sweet! I'm gonna try this tonight at home. I've been trying to take pictures of my Xmas tree, which is really beautiful and photos were coming out horrid. Too bad you can't save all these settings to some sort of a preset to be enabled quickly for low-light shots
guys, I've figured out the secret to low light shots! the pic I took looks identical to the gs3 now, from what I can tell on my dna. check it out!
set your iso to 200...always use 200 for least noise possible. put sharpness up + 1. then, the secret here, jack exposure up ALL THE WAY! bam! great night shots with flash that even focus decently too. your screen will be black bevsuseThe iso is so low, but take the pic and you'll see!

Hey all, this is my first post and I know that I'm a noob - glad I got that out of the way.
As I read these posts and looked at the settings on my DNA, I found that by defult HTC sets their contrast WAY too high - it actually makes the pictures look darker. So I suggest that you play around with the contrast. I lowered it all the way down and my scenes look brighter and cleaner.
Yes, ISO 200 and 400 work best. Also, if you want to make your images looks 'artsy,' the camera app has built in filters.

tonight i'm going to try some night shots again, wtih the same liquor cabinet pic, but make the contrast -1 and -2 and throw them up here.

to be honest, i never really knew what HDR meant or did lol sometimes it looks great, soemtimes terrible

Very interesting thread!
I think the G2 still has the best camera by quite a margin if you know how to use it, and I haven't even tried 4k or other camera improvement mods. The only thing the HTC phones have on it is low light pictures, which I don't think most people do anyway.
The OIS helps a hell of a lot for someone like me that has a hand tremor that's really bad at times.
What's your opinion on the camera? I'd rather have my phone than a $200 point and shoot as long as I don't need to zoom.

it's good under a lot of conditions, but very, very slow. Until you mod it. Then it's all around slick.
I've compared it to a Samsung Galaxy S4 and Lenovo Vibe Z camera (with f/1.8 lens) and both were less precise by a wide margin and frequently had pictures ruined by hand shaking.
The OIS doesn't just counteract the visible shaking; it reduces micro-shakes that blur your pictures without you noticing them. As a result the accuracy of this camera is about 3 megapixels higher than normal (my estimate).
All this being said, it's still a cellphone camera, so it has major flaws. It has only an f/2.4 aperture, which is mediocre for a high-end phone (though OIS counters it a bit by reducing subject-motion blur). Movement and low-light photos get ruined often. And I disagree that these aren't common conditions.

the top pic is what the S4's pic looked like when it did NOT get blurred by hand shaking. most pictures turned out worse than that.
Didn't the OIS not only kick in for videos? Just saying... Sounds like placebo to me. I don't shake much usually, but I get a lot of blur pics...

The stock camera is pretty good but I tried out Jishnu's cam mod and its great 4k is really beautiful though the 720p 120fps is very pixelated and imo not really usable. There's some features that are supposed to be included like HFR mode for front camera but I don't seem to have it for some reason.

Are there some tips to be shared?
I can get some seriously crisp photos and then crap for awhile.
I'm still all stock and the focusing is the worst I have ever experienced, no joke. Really.

I find it to be significantly better at low light than my Samsung phones were. HTC is definitely better at night but terrible at day. Sam used to black out completely when the light got even slightly dim. On my g2 it at least tries to get somewhat of a picture without relying on flash which makes pictures an ugly blue.

The g2 has a terrible camera. On a sunny day it works great but on an overcast day. Or around 6/7 pm when the sun is going down it's pure garbage. This camera take in almost no light. There's no reason why in my kitchen with my light on lets say a 5/10 brightness should pictures be almost black. On my lumia and iPhone 5s, hell even my iPhone 3gs the view finders were all still lit bright and pictures were taken basically how my eye saw them.
LG really screwed up on the camera . this phone would have been perfect if it wasn't for the poor view finder lag/low light . there should be no noise on a photo in reasonable light and there is no reason why an ISO of 200 produces a dark image indoors with dim lighting when my ancient iPhone 3gs takes a beter low light indoor shot . I hope the g3 is a better camera or I'm jumping back to Nokia and wp8.1

heres an exampe of the terrible light intake of this phone. first image is on the lumai 920 in normal mode at 200 iso the second image is on the g2 in normal mode on 200 iso. itsblurry but thats notthe problem bother were taken at 730 ish am in the same spot , i just woke up please excuse the mess also this is daylight coming in from the window behind me the room light was off

You really don't know nothing you're talking about. Fire up intelligent Auto mode and stop set iso to 200. G2 knows better what ISO it should make picture in. It has Snapdragon 800 under the hood which one is supposedly x1000 much smarter and x1000 times faster than your s****d brain :laugh:

my IA is a dumb dumb. , the problem with IA is that the image will still have a high iso and have noise or be extremely soft. yes you are correct it will brighten the image but at the cost of image quality and noise.

well, I see your point, you want stock camera to point-and-shoot and make descent pix. and I want stock player to play Adobe flash w/o any hassles. and someone want G2 to play music loud in stereo with BoomSound.
