Xperia S Memory - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi to all!
I have a doubt, in the stock rom, it apears to have 700 mb of ram
I have installed cm10 yesterday, and it shows the same, 700 mb
how much ram have we in the xperia S??? in the original box, it shows 1024 mb!!!

Part of the ram is used by the GPU (graphic card). This is why the system can use "just" around 700 mega bytes.

300mb used by system itself.
dont worry

But I think this is lot of wasted ram.
300 gpu + 400 os =700MB not available
Sony should indicate that this phone has 768MB not 1GB like MIUI did.
They shouldn't include the 300MB lost by the gpu.

They mention the chip capacity, not the available memory. It is perfectly normal. My laptop has 7.631 GB RAM because the Intel GPU and ramdisks and whatnot use up the rest.

Yeah I know that but from 8GB ram 7.631GB available it's like 90% available not 20% like in xps.
I know android is not like Windows in memory management but....

It is a comparison of two different devices. If you just take the Xperia S and slap an additional 1GB RAM chip on it, you will never notice the difference. It's Tegra vs Exynos and Sense vs TouchWiz way more than 1GB vs 2GB.

2GB RAM on international version?

Anyone knows if Samsung has plans to release updated version of international SGSIII with 2GB RAM like they are doing with US/Japan version?
1GB is not nearly enough for heavy multitasking...
Heavy multitasking?
Whatever do you actually use that
Require such hardware for a phone?

Lol, but last year 1G of RAM was more than enough. Where getting crazy. Duel-Core, and 1G of RAM was perfect, and still is. Quad-Core, and 1G of RAM is Over kill. Just trollin' it up. I'm sticking with Duel-Core until the next Nexus. If Google releases a Quad-Core, then I'll get a GSIII. But as of now, I'm enjoying the "Basic" Duel-Core with 1G of RAM.
Edit: Sig is from my ROM, running a port. Has a XE build prop.

Completely agree. 1GB of RAM is NOT enough for power multitasking. I will be waiting for 2GB version too. I am currently working with SWAP Partition in order to "FIX" low memory issues... i hope with SGS3 no more.
i hate when folk are like "DUH WHAT DO YOU NEED TWO GIG OF RAM FOR?"
what difference does it make what its for, we want it ok?
why wouldnt we want it?
its like saying what do you want a ferrarri for when you have a volvo in the drive?
or asking what do you want a million dollars for when you only need ten for your lunch?

Very unlikely... But what do u want to do with ur phone that u say 1 GB is nor enough.

I think it may be 2GB RAM on GSM GSIII but probably near the end of the year.
I'm upgrading from a Galaxy Fit, which has less than 200MB usable RAM; so I think I'll be happy with only 1GB RAM.

Hey guys. I am a bit worried. The phone seems to be running fine but my RAM is constantly bellow 250 MB... I am killing everything possible and constantly using advanced task killer but still. Have you tried de-bloating your phone? It would also be good to disable application that auto-starts.
Hey. You don't have to worry about the available RAM being low. Android manages RAM usage differently than most other Operating Systems like OSX and Windows. Essentially, having RAM used up in Android is good because it caches apps in the background which allows you to have fluid multitasking.
If you are worried about performance then the best thing to do would be to install an app called Watchdog. This app will monitor the CPU usage of apps. These truly affect the performance of the phone. In general though don't worry about the RAM. And whatever you do, don't use a Task Killer for RAM purposes. This can be damaging because it can corrupt files and processes and inevitably cause more harm than good.
Hope that helps

You cannot stop apps from autostarting without root.
You do not need root to remove bloatware.
Go to settings and apps, and then click on what you don't want and disable it.

ROOTED anyway.
edit your build prop, change the delvik heap size to 128....freed up ram for me, though i honestly dont need it. i only have around 100mgb of free ram and my phone still multie tasks like a champ.
but there are options.
The story about ram management being different on android or linux is a common explanation used with regard to why ram consumption is not something to be worried about, but it is not entirely true. The truth is, ram and cpu speed work hand in hand. If your ram is full, then the cpu has to constantly open and close background processes, and this will slow the phone down if the cpu is slow. For example, on the Galaxy S, the phone starts to lag when ram falls below 100mb. However, there is no such problem on the Galaxy S3. This is due to the quad core cpu which is able to open and close processes fast enough that there is no noticeable lag. With that said, ram consumption is nothing to be worried about on multi-core phones, despite the fact that it was a problem on older single core phones. The only way the ram on the Galaxy S3 would be limited enough to cause problems is if a single app or process requires more than the 780mb available, which is extremely unlikely.

That is false. The US versions have 2GB of RAM because of their processor using more RAM. Jellybean runs just fine on the Galaxy nexus with 1GB of RAM and only a dual core processor.

but the chipset, GPU and the resolution (which comes to count in the amount of pixels to be rendered) are the same as Xeria P, isn't it? set aside RAM amoun, which I actually managed to get over 220MB Free RAM when system starts, thanks to root and removing bloatwares, they should ne the same, should'n?!!
Should put in the title which phone it's about ....
But looking up the spec sheet the P and U are the same but feature a single core mali 400, no mention of a clockspeed comparison but the galaxy s2 featured a quadcore mali 400 and its graphics were only average when compared to adreno 200 series and powervr 540.
sony could also be partly to blame as the adreno 220 in the xperia s under performs its spec sheet as well.

it IS a huge difference, but not when you are running GB and you have MORE THAN 240MB free RAM..!!
When you just start your phone, and no other app is running yet, and you have 240MB Free RAM, then you cannot say that P has more RAM than U, because you have sufficient and enough RAM at that time to run a Mid-Range game like Mega Jump...
F... NovaThor chipset, I had Xperia Neo before, it easily outperformed this goddamn phone, although havin single core cpu...
we should also compare the system reserved ram ...
i have 773MB of my 1024MB as Total Ram in Android. so there are 251MB for System (Memory for i.e Camera and 3D Graphics)!!
i dont think that U takes 251MB from 512MB for 3D Graphics.....

I've said this once, I'll say it again, on the Linux kernel, free RAM is wasted RAM.
I have an Xperia Play (phone designed for gaming) qcom msm7x30 w/ adreno205 that has the same amount of RAM as the U, and quite frankly, the Mali400 in the U rips the adreno205 to pieces.

I always keep a track of the available RAM on my device. On stock ROM, keeping bloatware and unnecessary apps disabled, i get RAM of about 450 MB available for usage. I was also able to do this on ARHD. On CM11 it slightly went down. I've noticed that by freeing more RAM i am able to make my battery longer, not a discovery worth mentioning since it's pretty obvious but just saying.

Yeah, I know, but it should try to aim as much devices as possible, and the most usual configuration right now is 1GB RAM (as low/mid-range devices are the vast majority of devices out there). A launcher is not an app to be aimed for high-end devices as themer is just a compilation of widgets/icons & wallpapers, and there are not so many to have that usage, as for example Action Launcher takes about 100MB RAM having 4 widgets on screen with much more information than for example the text or image widgets of Themer.

Well, Android is a resource-hungry OS, and some apps do get a good amount of RAM too, I usually have about 200-300MB free, using Action Launcher, but as soon as I get Themer, RAM goes low like hell ( < 50MB). You know, system optimization makes a lot, and system-apps too. With a clean phone mine has about 400MB used.

You know, system optimization makes a lot, and system-apps too. With a clean phone mine has about 400MB used.

Ahhhh okay. Cool.
Perhaps MyColorScreen could do some tinkering with Themer to work better with mid-range phones. I've kind of forgotten what mid-range phones are like. I haven't had one in almost two years.
