Hey guys. I am a bit worried. The phone seems to be running fine but my RAM is constantly bellow 250 MB... I am killing everything possible and constantly using advanced task killer but still. I even saw a point where I had 90mb ram left... sometimes I can see that temple run also runs choppy. I find this extremely strange ... any help would be appreciated ...

It does more harm than good.

Have you tried de-bloating your phone? It would also be good to disable application that auto-starts.
Hey. You don't have to worry about the available RAM being low. Android manages RAM usage differently than most other Operating Systems like OSX and Windows. Essentially, having RAM used up in Android is good because it caches apps in the background which allows you to have fluid multitasking.
If you are worried about performance then the best thing to do would be to install an app called Watchdog. This app will monitor the CPU usage of apps. These truly affect the performance of the phone. In general though don't worry about the RAM. And whatever you do, don't use a Task Killer for RAM purposes. This can be damaging because it can corrupt files and processes and inevitably cause more harm than good.
Hope that helps

You cannot stop apps from autostarting without root.
You do not need root to remove bloatware.
Go to settings and apps, and then click on what you don't want and disable it.
how about this, this is really worst, i don,t have much bloatware running, still ram is very low

ROOTED anyway.
edit your build prop, change the delvik heap size to 128....freed up ram for me, though i honestly dont need it. i only have around 100mgb of free ram and my phone still multie tasks like a champ.
but there are options.
The story about ram management being different on android or linux is a common explanation used with regard to why ram consumption is not something to be worried about, but it is not entirely true. The truth is, ram and cpu speed work hand in hand. If your ram is full, then the cpu has to constantly open and close background processes, and this will slow the phone down if the cpu is slow. For example, on the Galaxy S, the phone starts to lag when ram falls below 100mb. However, there is no such problem on the Galaxy S3. This is due to the quad core cpu which is able to open and close processes fast enough that there is no noticeable lag. With that said, ram consumption is nothing to be worried about on multi-core phones, despite the fact that it was a problem on older single core phones. The only way the ram on the Galaxy S3 would be limited enough to cause problems is if a single app or process requires more than the 780mb available, which is extremely unlikely.

That is false. The US versions have 2GB of RAM because of their processor using more RAM. Jellybean runs just fine on the Galaxy nexus with 1GB of RAM and only a dual core processor.

This script was not written for high end devices such as this one... Or anything with a dual core CPU... You might see a difference using a single core but this script was written for Ram management on lower end devices and devices with little ram... Using on a 1.5Ghz dualcore phone with 1GB of ram might imo be a waste of time...

Though it says that there is so much of the RAM being "used" in reality only a portion is actually being used. There are many programs that are dormit in memory waiting for you to execute them, by remaining dormit in memory they can run much faster, its in a way caching.
Now if you want to control that, download AutoKiller Memory from the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0.) and you can adjust the way the Kernel manages the dormit apps and free physical memory. Please read the help and the Dev's website for more understanding of the tool and the way Android manages the RAM.
Yeah, it's probably allotted for something else.
I noticed this with the Sense 4 ROMS for the 3D. All of a sudden had like 200mb total of missing RAM by flashing the ROM.
I see many people on xda posting ridiculous methods of freeing up Ram and frying the phone

Thanks for post. Many users don't know this
I'm waiting for someone to come in to this thread and try to tell us why you need 50 gigs of Ram and how his US variant with 2 gigs of RAM is far superior to the international, I own both so before this even comes to light lets be clear, clean, cut and dry the international version is smoother than the US variant no matter how many of you RAM fanatics want to tell me that 2 gigs is master race. Further Android manages RAM very well on it's own you can probably run just about anything with 512mb of RAM, but a whole gigabyte that's just butter on my toast. I hope people will actually read this thread and learn how their devices work instead of just yelling about how they need more RAM and wonder why they have no battery life when a task manager constantly clears the cache. I would appreciate it if one of the more informed members of XDA can make a simple write up of how Android manages RAM and why more free RAM is not always better :highfive:
Whilst I agree with the comments here it sometimes helps by not being rude to people who aren't as knowledgeable with android as some of us and who are asking questions like I have seen in some threads.
Whilst the adage free RAM is wasted RAM is generally correct with android there is no harm in freezing of uninstalling apps that you know you don't use.
For example I never use svoice and chat-on so there is no harm in freezing those or preventing them from loading if they will never be used.
Whilst unused RAM IS wasted RAM,,, RAM used by unused apps is also wasted ram
Go easy on the noobs and have a good weekend.

If I'm not mistaken the architecture of the version supporting HSPA does not support 2gb, that's why the Korean variant is slightly different and has 2 gigs of RAM, essentially It wouldn't have made any difference, the 32nm a9 process is about as far as it's going to go. (also I think the Korean version has 2 gigs of Ram due to LTE taking up more resources)
op, maybe it is not the issue of free-ing up RAM.. it also save up some battery...
eg: before you went to slp... make sure all are shut down.. and hv a minimal prog open for sync/phone..
of course now all OS have RAM optimism, but then sometime/some of the OS are not so profession on this.
most of the time due to the OS rooted/JB, which will have different methodology for optimizing the RAM.
Well, you can't deny the fact that more ram equals better multitasking. With less than 200mb of free ram after several days of use, my browser has to reload whenever I minimise it to check messages. But that wouldn't be the case if I had more free ram, ie when I've just rebooted the phone.

also forgot to mention stock unrooted locked, etc, just high ram hog. sometimes randomly when i end all tasks i can get it to go down to like 600-800mb usage. but lately no matter how many times you end it, its at like 1gb, and it sucks because phones 1.75gb ram, and when i open a few things it starts to get really slow because theres not much free to play with.
what does it matter? you have 1.75gb available and your using 1.11 so it leave you with 640mb free... No matter if there is 1gb free or 640mb you wont be able to tell the difference performance wise since you have more than enough ram to cover it. If you want about bunch of extra ram just laying around not being used then try a aosp rom, but you will lose all the fancy touchwiz features.
I use fast reboot. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greatbytes.fastreboot it works pretty good for me

As I said before, Touchwiz is a pig. You can clear ram in task manager all day long and literally watch the usage climb as it restarts services and apps you killed (and shouldn't have).
Touchwiz is a bigger pig than even Sense. We literally have 1gb less of internal storage than the Droid DNA, and they have the same amount of carrier crapware.
You have 2gb of ram, so I don't see the issue. Unused ram is wasted ram. You clearly aren't running out of ram, so what does it matter? The same amount of electricity powers unused ram as used.
I say this because I notice when using snote with spen its really laggy sometimes because I have like no ram available and gotta kill apps.

The thing is, according to the task mangler you aren't out of ram, per this thread.
My ram usage at any given time is close to 1.3gb and higher. I have no lagginess in the s-pen. So if you are sitting at 1gb free and having issues with the s-pen, I'd look elsewhere to your problem.

It's because of touchwiz, which is very inefficient, and the fact that you are using a phone that is actively connected to a network.
Nexus 7 is a pure android experience, no bloat will be wasting the ram.

again, read what he means. He means the RAM usage of single processes, not the whole usage

I understood what he wrote. The thing is he's trying to compare a pure android device, to a phone that is running the touchwiz interface over android.
Different processors, different hardware, all these factors need to be take into account. I doubt he will get another phone to match the nexus 7 ram usage unless.

But why should GMaps in TW use more RAM than Nexus's GMaps?

Tw is magic
But honestly I don't know why, I'll check some other android phones to find out why.

I'm running apex on n7 and s3 not TW but that's irrelevant. Why does the same apk/service running on JB consume so much more memory on s3? Guess I need to look at the process memory map
