S2 won't boot, recovery & download mode works - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there!
I might need some help. After it froze 3 times because of instagram, i pulled libsurfaceflinger.so from system/lib because that caused problems to instagram. (it was used for crt off btw)
So after that, i restarted the phone, but it won't go past the S2 screen, not even boot animation. However booting to download mode or recovery works. I can't wipe because of the LQ5. I tried to reflash the bootloader, but can't seem to help.
Any idea? i don't really wan't to do a reflash with 3 a files firmware, that's just the worst case scenario...
thx

Flash a stock rom in Odin. Single file packages available here or with the PC version of Checkfus - search for it on here/Google; this will enable you to download the latest firmware for your phone model/country/carrier (there are also unbranded firmwares) that you'd normally get via OTA update.
I don't see how you have any other choice.

LQ5 has the brickbug... so I don't know if it's safe to flash a single file firmware over it... because if you wipe LQ5, it might brick the phone...

flashed single file LPO over it, and it seems to have solved the problem, the phone booted up

[Q]Odin and Stock firm. only has 1 file?

hi there!
I just wanted to ask you all if this has happened to you guys.
You know that when you download a stock firmware from from wherever you get you get the file in .ZIP
so when you open it up, and extract it, you may see 5 files, modem, csc...etc.
but from 4.0.4 samsung firmwares doesnt show this 3 important files which are PHONE, and CSC, it only shows me 1 file.
and whenever I add it to PDA section on ODIN, it goes OK but after, it gets stuck at the boot logo forever, so the only way to solve this is to flash again with odin but with firmwares with those 3 files manually to make it work.
does this have anything to do with the brick bugs? cause I have never had it on 4.0.4 stock firmwares and wipe does not brick my phone up

From memory, I believe wiping dalvik cache can help get past boot logo but I don't remember whether that was for custom roms or stock.

a) 1 file firmware is normal.
b) you need to perform factory reset in stock recovery. Nothing should go wrong
c) your issue is not related to brick bug. the solution is in b)
d) if you have any fear to perform factory data reset in stock recovery, then flash Siyah kernel (.tar) via Odin then boot to recovery and perform factory data reset.
Just one question... Ae you aware of emmc Superbrick Bug?

Yes I am aware of its danger and brick bug thingy, but I usually do not wipe on stock samsung kernels and recoveries. But I did with my cm9 rom and checked with an app and it said i had the brickbug thingy but it didnt do nothing even with wipes, i wonder what that apps is telling me.

Phone not turning on after factory reset

Hi all,
I've been having a few issues with my S2 (Randomly resetting, freezing, etc) - so I decided to do a factory reset - but it hasn't worked.
When I turn my phone on, it wont go past the galaxy logo. I've tried holding down VOLUME UP, POWER, and HOME - but it doesn't boot it into recovery mode.
I've downloaded odin (the phone is rooted) and was told to download a new ROM and then use the PDA button on odin. But the only file type it expects is MD5, tar and SMD. Whenever I download a ROM, I just get a ZIP?
I'm probably being stupid. Could someone point me in the right direction? I don't care if I lose data, I just want the phone working.

What ROM do you want to flash?
If it's a stock ROM, then extract the zip file and flash the contained tar/md5 file with Odin.
If it is a custom ROM and only provided as CWM-flashable zip file, then use a stock ROM to flash first and flash the custom ROM afterwards, when everything works again.
Here you can get the latest stock ROMs => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487, or pre-rooted stock ROMs from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071, or use Check Fus Downloader from here => http://fus.nanzen.se/ to check for the latest officiallly released firmware versions for your phone in your region and download it directly from Samsung servers.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I don't care which ROM I use - As long as I get the phone working again. I did download 7comp ROM but I couldn't find any .tar files?
I also converted the ZIP to a TAR but odin isn't picking it up ?!
OK - I've downloaded and installed the latest stock ROM you posted.
It seems to have installed, but doesn't go past the splash screen which says samsung galaxy Sii
Any ideas?
[EDIT] - Phone fixed. I was able to load it into recovery mode and cleared cache. woo
Well done ...now try to go on recovery mode ...if should be able to go....do full wipe...then clear delvik cache...then advance- fix permission ..
Then reboot system ....you are done...
Don't forget to say thanks..

Attempted to root the phone but it didn't work.
I followed a set of instructions, and was asked to wait for the phone to reboot. It now has the "!" rooted icon but won't go past the rooted screen.
System restore and clearing cache doesn't set it back to factory default. Any ideas?

Sorry for late reply. I followed a video on youtube showing you how to root the phone. It looked succesfull as the "!" did appear, but it wouldn't go past that.
So I rolled it back using the original ROM and have given up on rooting it. It's a shame as I really liked Jelly Bean

Bricked Canadian (Virgin) S II?

Hello all,
due to some temporary crazyness I flashed a non-compatible ROM on my S2.
No worries I thought, just get the Samsung firmware, flash with Odin - get back to factory original, reinstall my previous CWM image and all is good.
So: I downloaded the file "I9100MUGLD3_I9100MBMCLD3_BMC" from the SamMobile website ( this is the Bell version), flashed with Odin.
All went fine. But when restarting the phone, it says on the Galaxy 9100 screen - for hours and hours, and never starts.
Flashed again (same file) - same result.
So my phone is not totally dead, as I am able to flash it - but something does not work.
Should I have used a different firmware from SamMobile - maybe this one: I9100MUGLD3_I9100MBMCLD3_VMC?
Please help as I am somewhat stuck here...
Thank you all.

Try wiping data after flashing Original FW. Sometimes it works for me... Also U hav international S2 or network locked??
The firmware you've selected seems to be perfectly all right. If you can still boot into recovery and download mode, you can try flashing a different Stockrom (non canadian/virgin) just for checking your phone situation, but make sure its compatible with your i9100.
If that does not work, most probably you've messed up your Bootloader
Best of luck. Let us know how it goes !

Thank you all. How do I fix my bootloader? The unit is booting after I flash the default firmware, I see the android character for a while - but then stays for ever on Samsung Galaxy SII screen...
I use the default settings in ODIN - should I maybe use other settings (re-partition?)
Update: I flashed Siyahkernel - and was able to get into CWM. With CWM I was able to restore my CWM backup - all is good now.
I just would like to know: what is the "SAFE" method for installing JellyBam?

[q] help - touch screen doesn't work!

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S3 I9300.
I tried to flash a stock rom a couple of days ago and something went wrong.
Now my touch screen doesn't respond, it's the weirdest thing, I guess I flashed a corrupted file with Odin.
Anyway, I couldn't enter recovery mode (the phone kept roobting when I tried), I managed to flash the CWM recovery and now I can enter recovery mode.
I could flash a rom via external SD card, but still no luck, now I have paranoid, but still the only buttons that work are the home and shutdown (physical buttons) the touch screen just doesn't respond...
What can I do ???

which stock rom did you flash a couple of days ago?
If you can get back to recovery now then try download mode too and reflash your countrys/carriers original firmware to what it was before. Then re-root and flash philz recovery and then a custom ROM from the internalSD.

I've tried so many ROM's to repair that I'm not sure regarding which one is the corrupted one...
I'm almost sure it was downloaded from the link in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187081
Before flashing a new ROM boot to recovery and manually wipe cache partition and dalvik and format data/system/cache from mounts and storage. After that the phone wont reboot so pull the battery and put it back in and boot to download mode then flash via Odin. Also try Odin v1.85 too.Ive used both v1.85 and v3.07 and sometimes had issues with the newer one.
try this with a different firmware than the first one you used.
the WEIRDEST thing ever

So, I have done what you suggested.
And now, the left bottom 'menu' button work!
it's not a physical button, and It didn't work before.
I know it sound crazy, but this is the situation.
I've tried doing it a few times more, and nada, still the same..
I've tried more roms, but nothing seems to help...
Any ideas anyone ?
Sounds like damage to the hardware from flashing a rom not for this phone .
Good point from JJEgan mate. What was the ROM you flashed to your phone and is your phone an i9300 or i9305?.Maybe another varient..?.Makes a big difference.

I have the international I9300.
All the stock rom's that I tried contained '9300' in their name...
the custom roms that I tried were Paranoid and Cyanogenmod.. I was pretty careful regarding the exact model type.
I think maybe at one time I accidentally plugged out the phone while odin was in the reset stage and didn't get to PASS yet.
Can this explain the symptoms ?
If indeed there is a hardware problem, is it fixable or should I begin grieving ?
Flash stock rom via Odin .
Post at what point it fails .
If you unplug your phone in Odin mode you could kill it.Atleast it was at the end.You said you have formatted and reflashed again and I guess that about all you can do but do it a couple more times with your countrys firmware just to make sure.Keep an eye on the flash bar on Odin an watch to see if anything doesnt flash or skips.
I hope you didn't flash a note 2 rom (i and some other users flashed the kernel of note2 and the digitizer was dead), you can read in one of my posts and I'm sure there are other users. Not so many but still.

Bricked phone, Odin can't load the system.img

Hello.
I tried to flash stock XEO ROM to my S3, but while the whole process it stuck on loading system.img. Then when i tried to turn on the phone it shows me the yellow triangle and info that i can recover the system with Kies. But it also didn't work. I tried to flash other stock roms but it always is stuck in booting system.img
FIX:
I downloaded different roms and different ver. of android
Tried to flash several times with pit file and without but it was still stuck at system.img
I tried different ports and the result was the same
I changed the cable and reinstalled drivers and I succeed to flash 4.0.4 ver without pit file with odin 3.07
Have you tried flashing stock rom via ODIN?
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about I tried several times and it still doesn't work :crying:

Did you try install stock firmware with PIT file?
If you have 16 GB version of GT-I9300, you can try this PIT file (I tested on my device).
Odin 3.07 with PIT file;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2762337&d=1401023420
Download a stock ROM from sammobile, then put it to PDA. Before start flashing, press PIT button on Odin and select the PIT file, then press Start.
I decided to send my phone to service, when will it come back still bricked I will try it
Ok, I will get my phone back UNFIXED because they told me at the service that i have to pay for changing the firmware because my phone comes from other country.. I disagreed and told them to send my phone back.
I had an idea how to fix my phone and also some questions about that.
First, is there any way to full wipe my phone without recovery, I mean that i can;t access recovery on my bricked phone and i think that causes the problem with flashing any rom with odin (that the brokem rom i still installed and odin can' flash the new one over it). When I'll wipe the phone completely i suppose it might solve the problem. But does wiping the phone makes the phone unrecognizable for PC?
The second idea is kinda connected with the first one. I thought about flashing cf root with odin into my phone and as far as i know, it has its own recovery so i can easily wipe the phone with it and then flash the stock rom.
I know that my reply looks kinda messy but I hope you know what i mean.

Bump, need an answer to this.

Ok my phone is finally alive :cyclops: Here's the solution i figured out:

I tried different ports and the result was the same
I changed the cable and reinstalled drivers and I succeed to flash 4.0.4 ver without pit file with odin 3.07
