Not really the case with Lithium Ion batteries.

This is a grounding issue with your cord almost certainly. Try a different cord and if you're using a cheapo charger you got at a 7-11 then you have your answer.... I may or may not have had this happen to me. Even if you are using the one that came with your phone try a different one. Report back and let me know how it works out. I'm curious to see if I hit the nail on the head

I've run across this issue also. The first time was a cheap charger, second time it was the cord.

Yeah I had this happen to me before. Just try different chargers that was the cause for me.

Damn USB issues........again!

So I know there are several threads on this, some by me, but this time the issue is very weird.
So i'm on my third phone now, previous 2 had the USB port going wacky. Phone thinking it was charging when it wasn't plugged in, computer not recognizing phone anymore etc.
So problem has now started again on phone number three. Weird thing is this time the phone seems to not have this problem all day. Problem starts at night, so i'm assuming maybe a battery percentage left triggers it. The other weird aspect of this is that right before the phone starts bugging out, (charging, uncharging, and back, over and over while not plugged in), the car mode symbol appears in the status bar, and starts flashing on and off. If I am fast enough to catch it,I can deactivate car mode. When all this starts happening, phone also starts to get stuck and freezes up. This issue is really getting annoying. Love this phone but this is starting to make me crazy. Yes I got the phones at different stores. What do I uninstall to just get rid of car mode, considering I never use it?

So, instead of using your existing thread, you decided to start yet another one for the same issue? And people wonder why the search doesn't work like it should.

Seems to be whatever USB cable you are using or the way you carry this phone is the problem. No way you get 3 phones the same exact problem in a row. FYI, Samsung Focus and Captivate had the similar problem in the past. Car mode is just the result of your USB port problem instead of the cause of it. What happens is something shorted out or bridged the pins of the USB port to make the phone think it is conneted to a car dock (IIRC, car dock uses a 300k resistor to bridge two pins). Some ppl with Focus or Captivate reported success by blowing out the dirt in the USB port.
As well as cleaning the USB port with an alcohol swab

The only USB cable I've used with all of them is the one they come with. I've used the alcohol cleaning method as well as blowing in the port, hopefully getting out any thing causing issue. This seems to help temporarily. The strangest part of all this to me is with this latest phone, I have zero problems all day. When I lay down in bed for the night and start using the phone is when it starts to happen. My battery life can range from 60%-30% at that time, so I don't know if that is a connection to this issue. Maybe the phone is possessed. It always seems to take about 2-3 weeks for this problem to arise. I always have the phone in my pocket, so I guess something must be happening with that. Luckily with this latest one, I bought the best buy insurance, it's just after awhile they're gonna start wondering why this keeps happening to me, and if it's my fault. The USB port problems can sometimes make it difficult/impossible to flash back to stock.

Useless responses are no better than useless threads imo.
To the OP. The likelihood of that many bad phones in a row with the exact same problem is pretty rare. Take a look at anything that's remained consistent through all the phones, and try replacing that item(s).

+1 for replacing the cord and power brick. Alot less quality is put into them compared to the phone. Just make sure not to buy cheap. And never plug your phone into anything cheap (i.e. car radio usb port, off brand charger, ect) That's not saying everything else is bad. But why risk it. Especially when you can buy brand name chargers off ebay for $5 or less.

I've only used the supplied USB cord, every time. Now even when my phone isn't confused if it's charging or not, the battery life is now awful. 5-6% per hour drain. Used to be 1-2%. No changes made by me. Also the phone has become super laggy at times. Feel like i'm using my cappy again. My apologies for starting this post. I knew I would most likely get crap for it, but my issue is very strange, IMO, compared to mine and others previous experiences. I also figured if I added to an old post, it would go unnoticed.

If he is getting 5% per hour drain at idle, yes that is horrible battery life. SGS2 is fairly easily capable of 1% per hour idle drain.

i had this same problem. it wasnt with the port but it was with the usb cables i was using. but those cables would charge the phone fine but not allow it to get a connection with the computer. swapped cables and works fine.

You've used the same cord with all 3? or a new cord with each one?
It sounds like you've got a boatload of issues going on. Personally i'd do a wipe and try a fresh install without installing any additional stuff to be sure the hardware is fine.. Once you've verified that start adding apps to see if it was a specific one causing the issue. (there's other ways to troubleshoot this, but a fresh wipe is the most straight forward and simple IMO)

%5/hr idle is not good, at all. Last night my phone dropped %5 over 9 hours idle. how is 2-4 days equal to 100-200 hrs? where i'm from 2-4 days = 48-96 hrs

i suppose.
However he said before it was 1-2 percent an hour. That's pretty much impossible while being used, only get numbers like that while not in use (idle). Even %5 an hour while being used isn't likely to happen. Guess i just figured it had to be in ref to idle drain.
lol guess we just wait to see

hot potato phone

During the night, my phone got soo hot, I could not even touch it. It was charging while this happened and I think it happened because the phone went under the pillow and did not have proper ventilation. When I noticed I unplugged the charger and took out the battery. After it cooled I tried turning on the phone, it initially went to the charging icon then turned off and I can't get it to turn.on. CAN ANYONE HELP??
I wouldn't mind going to ATT and getting another one but its rooted. Do you think I would be ok to return it with out them finding out? I can't get to recovery mode to flash to stock.
I tried searching for the answer..couldn't find one, most people were able to turn theirs on.
Plug in your usb cable to your computer and hold the volume buttons (aka get into download mode), leave your phone on there for a couple hours to charge and then proceed to boot normally. Hopefully this works for you, if not, buy a new battery from Amazon (needs NFC, preferably Samsung OEM). I would suggest getting this http://www.amazon.com/Samsung--CGPK...UEE0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327948609&sr=8-1 so you will be able to charge your other battery if you are not able to charge it through download mode.(includes an extra battery too)
Hey thanks for the advice, I'll try this when I get home...say hypothetically it doesn't work...and it can't be.saved.and turned on...could the warranty department tell if I have.voided my warranty by rooting it?
If you tripped the flash counter, possibly, but I've read that most stores don't check it anyways and just get you a replacement.

You know how people always say that the other side of the pillow is colder? Well since it's winter, people want the other side Warner and use their phones to warm it up.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought it was the same thread, then I thought the guy just copied and pasted the other guy.
On topic... just let the phone cool down, and then see if it works. If it does, good. If not, try ATT and they should accept it. They can't find out you rooted it if the phone doesnt work.
Off topic- a friend of mine took the shell of an iPod touch And put quarters in it for weight, and returned it.
You need to wait a while when you charge the phone before booting it up, the phone needs some time to get enough power to turn itself on without turning off immediately.
after the battery cools down, it should still work, hopefully you won't need a new battery

I can tell you why Mr. Smarty Pants.
Back in the days before smartphone existed they phones did not get this hot. So, when an unsuspecting customer gets a new dual core heating pad they have no clue that they generate this much heat thus using their past charging habits ala under a pillow.

Phone placed under pillow is understandable but phone is under pillow while charging is just odd. You run a power cord under the pillow too?
I think the main question is why is his device getting that hot while charging? Will putting it under a pillow really cause it to heat up that much? Also doesn't the phone have a thermometer in it and auto shut down when it gets too hot?

Now that's messed up!!
A couple years ago when plasma tv's were all the rage, there was a story in the news about a guy that was going around electronic's stores, buying tv's and returning them, but he would have replaced the TV with an oven door!

Phone randomly shutting off.

I'll be right in the middle of texting or on Facebook and the phone will randomly shut off, battery life isn't really a factor although it seems the less charge, the more shutdowns. I've had the phone for 3 weeks and it recently just started doing it. I have read up a little bit on the issue and It seems like a faulty battery or a bug in the SD card causes it. I did a factory reset and formatted the SD card and It's still happening. What is the best (Most affordable) replacement battery for these phones? Is the anker a good alternative or just OEM?

I did this and have not had any issues in over a month. I aslo got a new back case by tellin gthem my signal was really unstable. IF you are nice and tell them you dont have a credit card you can get them to escalate it and send without you haveing to give them your cc number.
So the replacement won't have the same problems as the OEM? Did they fix the issue? Why would I need a new back case, what's the point?
So I called. They said I need to provide a CC number, so in case I don't send the defective battery back they can charge me MSRP, how do I request to cancel the order? I think I'm just going to try and trade the phone for something else...
When the phone spazs out, and I turn it back on the battery is about 20% less. I completely drained it, charged it all night and its been on for 4 hours, It's currently at 16%

I had the exact same issue as yourself. I got a free replacement from t-mobile. It was a temporary fix as many other users had previously stated, Maybe lasted a week or two till the random shut downs returned. I had a similar problem. For me it seems to be related to the battery/phone overheating. Removing the t-mobile cover I had on the phone seems to have reduced the random shut-downs.
When I have time, I'll likely be contacting HTC for a replacement battery.
I've never owned a phone that makes me as upset as this one, this random shut down issue is a real inconvenience, If the new battery doesn't fix the issue, I'm sending it into HTC getting it repaired and selling it, I'll even take 200$ for the damn thing just to get rid of it!

Get the Anker battery on eBay or Amazon. I had several shutdowns a day with stock battery. I've a couple Anker batteries and the phone stops the auto reboot/random shutdown completely. Something is fxcked with the stock battery.

Bricked HTC One

So my phone died.
Not by flashing. Not by rooting. Not by anything. I plugged it in on thursday with about 3% battery remaining, and next thing I know I am late for class because the phone died in middle of the night sometime. I was running a CM10.1 nightly. It was buttery smooth and honestly felt better for the phone than sense did. So I had no quarrel.
Now it wont boot, no LED, no capacitive buttons, no adb, no recognition, no nothing. I assume myself as a veteran of android and its capabilities (including how incredibly difficult one actually is to brick) and I have never seen something like this.
If your phone has done this, say so.
I want to hear stories and isolate the incident. If you have any ideas, share them.
Im a little ticked because I really liked this phone and its a ****ty way to have it go.
Stab in the dark but could it possibly be dead and your charger didn't charge it. Never heard of a situation like this and I've done some strange things to my phones. Possible or battery is so dead is why u can't power up. Try a different charger on it for a couple hours and try again.
Edit, when u have it plugged in to a charger does the led glow red ?

Some how your not getting juice I'd just keep it plugged into a different one for a couple hours. Is there any way it could have gotten wet? Sucks if its bricked

Never heard of something like this.. hope it isn't actually bricked man. Good luck!

But have you tried another charger?
Cable does not equal charger.
You can't count on an aftermarket charger or cable either. I've seen strange things with stuff that didn't come with the phone.

I actually had the same thing happen to my Galaxy Note I. It just died completely one day when it was sitting on my desk with no previous issues. But it was already year old by that time.
I hope it works out. Since it's a new phone, at least you've got the warranty.
other people have posted about this issue in the international thread. but as far as i know after letting it charge a while they all came back on and they all said no charging light when plugged in
a lot of the people with this problem were also running cm10.1

Yet Another Bricked DNA Thread

So this morning I start playing music on my phone as I'm getting ready to take a shower (shower off at this time) and then the music stops - of course, the phone doesn't respond to the power button. So, I've tried recalibrating the charging circuit and booting into hboot, but with no luck. The charging lights do not turn on and the capacitive lights do not flash when holding the power (or any other additional combination of) button. I'm going to leave it on a charger for a day or so and see if I can get anywhere then. In the meantime, is there anything else you can advise me to try? I've read that disconnecting the battery for a few moments might do something, so I think that'll be my next step if keeping it on the charger doesn't result in anything.
Any advice is welcome, of course.
Cheers,
Griffin
Yeah so far the only thing I have seen with people who have had the same problem were disconnecting the battery. Or most people just get a replacement.

So I disassembled it and pulled the battery for about ten minutes and reconnected it - to no avail. Is there a way I can test the battery? I have access to a multimeter, but I'm not entirely sure where to make contact on the battery's connector. I'm going to leave the battery disconnected for several hours and see what I can do then.
I seen in another thread like this about calibrating the battery but I can't find it.
to calibrate battery turn phone off and plug device into outlet press and hold power volume up and down at the same time until device poowers one or two minutes has passed if two minutes has passed call htc or asurion and replace it

Welp, battery disconnected for ~24 hours and then attempted recalibration - nothing. I think I've got a bad component somewhere in there. I'm going to take up Best Buy's blue HTC One for $30 on Black Friday, but I'm definitely going to see if I can find out what's wrong with this thing, this hardware is not going to waste!
Thanks for the advice everyone!
Try another charger, maybe the one you've been using is bodied.
The same thing happened to me, I used my warranty and luckily I had 2 days left. I think we should start to really look into this problem, because I see it popping up more and more, and it is kind of **** that one year after this phone came out and everyone phone is bricking with no easy solution.
Were you rooted/rommed and what rom?
Rooted n ROM has nothing to do with it charging

Mine crapped out in a similar fashion last week. Disassembled it yesterday and also had no luck with disconnecting the battery.
Anyone hook up a volt meter to these bricked phones? It might be a bad batch of batteries, or they just give out after a year of heavy to medium use. Anyone try a replacement battery? I am just hoping this phone doesn't randomly give out like this, but the trend seems to show sooner or later they just brick themselves.

I'll probably take a meter to it today if I get a moment. I'll report back results.

I'm not sure if it is the battery specifically, yet.
Hate to necro a thread, but we're always asked to search, so..
Did you ever get this resolved, OP? Mine literally just did the same thing. I was watching a YouTube video and it died in my hands. Full battery, had just taken it off the charger like 30 minutes prior. Absolutely no activity, no lights, no flashing, nothing. Get nothing when attaching it to the computer, too.
I'm really hesitant about getting a replacement because I don't want to be somewhere where I NEED the phone and have this happen. I guess I'll get a replacement and sell it for another phone. Damn.
Disconnect it from the charger for an hour, then connect it to a charger and wait a half hour to see if the charging light comes on and then turn it on.

Tried it. I tried everything I can think of. I'm getting a replacement from Verizon and selling it for the Moto X. No way am I gonna risk this happening again.
This looks like some soft if hardware failure but no one has been able to tell exactly what happens. Sorry to hear this happen to you.

It happens so suddenly. The phone has been flawless since I got it. The only thing I can think of that was weird was a hard reset last week, but I just chalked that up to CM nightly issues. Oh well.
