Has anyone been successful in installing the Google Now apk from the Google Now for ICS Project on CM9 or AOKP?
If you have, can you kindly write out any instructions or difficulties you had in installing it.
I ask this because the Google Now for ICS Project thread is in complete shambles. I think it would be more organized if we can keep some instructions for our EVO 3D's localized in this forum.
I've tried the installation method of:
1. Open ES File Explorer File Manager or any other root-enabled file explorer on your Android device.
2. Navigate to /system directory.
3. Once you’ve opened the folder, find build.prop and open it in a text editor. To do this, press build.prop until a prompt appears. Tap the Open in Text Editor button.
4. Locate the line that says ro.build.version.sdk=15and edit it to ro.build.version.sdk=16. Take note, the value 15should be changed to 16. After editing, press the menu button and tap Save and Exit.
5. Go to /system/appand find GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk.Rename it to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk1and save it. Again, take note of adding the number 1 to APK.
6. Reboot your device.
7. Launch your file manager app again, locate the Google Now APK, and install it on your device.
8. After installing, go back and edit build.prop in the same manner as in steps 3 and 4. This time, it should be ro.build.version.sdk=15.Change the value 16back to 15 again.
9. Reboot your device again to complete the process.
This resulted in errors not being able to connect to the internet.
The other method I tried to some degree of success was using theos0o's apk located here.
Now I say to some degree of success because I don't seem to get anything but the weather card and the "sample card" thing at the top, not matter if I search for things or not.
Is there a way to remove the Tutorial Sample card above the weather?
Yes. See this thread from a few days ago:

All you have to do is rename the app, copy it to system/app using a root browser, change permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot. If you want voice capabilities, you have to install a few apps.
Having said that, I put it on my phone and it is nothing special. Maybe because it is not integrated from the beginning, it does nothing for me but chew up battery. My battery today only lasted 4 hours with 2 hours of screen on time. There were 2000 wakelocks trying to get my location, which I think was Google Now.

Search Function doesn't seem to do much good on the forum, I searched for Google Now in our forum here and did not see that at all.
Well, I've been on wifi all day, I've got a long trip tomorrow I guess I can see if it actually does anything on the way out to North Carolina. If not guess I will be uninstalling it.

I've got slideit on my nook, but can't seem to activate it. It tells me I need to activate it manually, but when I go to settings/keyboard, the screen flickers and takes me to the home screen. I've tried disabling almost all the running apps and rebooting, but the same thing still happens.
I've been able to find help on rooting, adding apps, etc, on this forum, so maybe someone could give me some advice.
Try moving the apk from data/app to system/app folder then you should be able to install and setup the keyboard.

That's where it is now. I followed the directions on another thread, but the problem seems to be not being able to get into settings/keyboard.
Are you using the NookColor Tools app for settings, or the stock settings?
I recommend NCT.

I had been trying with the stock. In NCT there's the option to choose keyboard but slideit isn't listed. I'll try downloading the apk and putting it in system/app again.
I'm also having a problem with SlideIT. I've pushed it to the device, and when I bring up NCT it's in fact the only option to select. However, it never actually comes up. In other words, if I enter a text entry box the keyboard never pops up.
Try messing with the permissions once it is in the systems/app folder. I've neutral been giving them full user permission but that might not be needed. Also sometimes a reboot is needed.

so what did you do to get it to work?
Lol throw us a bone here.. how do you get slideit working?
How i got mine working.
I installed it using dropbox. I put my apk file in dropbox, then i install it. Then i go to my sd card using root explorer, there is a folder called dropbox which the apk gets copied to. I copy and paste the apk in \system\app and then it still didnt work, so i went to the file, mounted as r/w in root explorer, then you long hold on the file name, and it gives the options of "permissions" which you select and then i checked all the boxes. I rebooted after that, which at this point you can use nook tools to set the keyboard.
Now that i helped with all that, how in the hell do you use this thing? I saw videos of swipe, and it looked amazing, to me this thing is like a regular keyboard although i can draw lines through it, it just has no clue what i am trying to type. maybe i will search for a tutorial or something.
Update: found a userguide http://www.mobiletextinput.com/Product/SlideIT/Manual/Pdf/SlideIT_UserGuide[English].pdf
Its funny, I did exactly that, and it still did not work...

This is easiest to understand when viewed.
As a simple test, place your forefinger on the letter T, and, without lifting it, slide diagonally over to E, then to S, and then back to T. Now lift your finger. If the word "test" did not appear, then your copy of SlideIT isn't finding its dictionary.

I followed these steps exactly and got to the point where I could see SlideIT as a selectable keyboard. I selected it and then tried to type in a field and a note and it doesn't pop-up. I rebooted after that just to make sure and still no good.

Try installing it, so it'll be in data/app, then copy it into system/app - changing permissions, and also keeping the original apk in data/app. Then reboot, and you should be able to select it in NookColorTools.
That worked! Thanks
I can't find the apk after download. It does not exist in the data/app when I am viewing it in Astro file manager lite after performing an install via Appbrain or directly from the market. Is there an alternate way to get the apk? I purchased the app.

If it's really installed, it's in there somewhere. Look for com.dasur.slideit.apk
Still no luck. Isn't there a workaround? I imagine jve got the apk Somehow off his device since he loaded it on dropbox.
Thanks in advance!
Crap, so the developer overnight put the apk for a demo version online and I was able to get the apk into my app directory with root explorer. However I then went into the SlideIT application and changed input method. The app has a little text input box to do that. Unfortunately after doing this the app wanted a registration code, but the SlideIT not being activated I cannot enter it. So I thought to just enable trial mode but when the app tries to connect to the server it errors out. And I can't get back to the input selection box! help!
Tried to un install using astro but SlideIT doesn't show in list of apps. Only shows in app brain but un install failed. If only I could clear SlideITs cache!

This also makes NOVA 2 work
This took me awhile through trial and error, but I have a strong addiction to gaming…
This works with the T-mobile HTC Amaze 4g (possibly the Verizon HTC Rezound and T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989)
Requirements:
Root
ES File Explorer (Free from Market)
$6.99 to buy Order and Chaos on the Market
Boring Info (Skip if you want):
The common work around that people tried doing to get O&C working was changing the build.prop. The common builds did not work for me (SG2, Lg Optimus x2). I figured it was because the Amaze runs on a Snapdragon, so when the game downloaded the 635mb of data, it was for a different processor. That’s why the T-Mobile Galaxy S2(SGH-T989), the Amaze, and the Rezound, all having a dual Snapdragon S3 processor haven’t been ported officially for O&C. But after searching build.props I found a weird one for the Verizon LG Revolution VS910 4G, it has a single Snapdragon S2 processor. I took the important stuff from it that tricks the market into thinking you have a different phone. Tried it and worked.
How to:
1. Make a nandroid backup or be prepared to reflash your rom if you mess this up lol.
2. Download ES File Explorer from market.
3. Open Es File Explorer.
4. Open the menu, and click settings.
5. Under Path Settings, check the box to the right of “Up to Root”.
6. Under Root Settings, check the box to the right of “Root Explorer”, click yes and allow super user access.
7. Check the box to the right of Mount File System and click back to the explorer that first came up.
8. Click back till you see at the top of the screen /
9. Click System, then hold-click on build.prop, copy, and go back where top of the screen is /, and paste your build.prop inside either the sdcard(internal), or sdcard2(external). This is your backup.
10. Click System, then click on build.prop, and open with ES Note Editor.
11. Scroll down till you see (Amaze has 2 lines) ro.product.model=HTC_Amaze_4G
Change it to ro.product.model=VS910 4G
12. Scroll down to the next ro.product.model=HTC_Amaze_4G
Make the following changes:
ro.product.model=VS910 4G
ro.product.brand=htc_wwe
ro.product.name=htc_ace
ro.product.device=ace
ro.product.board=spade
ro.product.manufacturer=LGE
13. Scroll down to ro.build.fingerprint=(I don’t want to write the original lol)
Change to ro.build.fingerprint= htc_wwe/htc_ace/ace:2.3.3/GRI40/47853:user/release-keys
14. Click the menu, and click save.
15. Exit by pressing back till your at the phone’s home screen. Click menu, settings, applications, manage applications, under downloaded or all find the market and clear cache. Find Google Services Framework and clear data.
16. Restart.
17. Open market when phone turns back on, agree if it asks you to, and search for Order and Chaos, install and buy.
18. Open the game, agree to downloading the 635Mb, after download, continue with whatever it asks, log in with you Gameloft Live Account or create one. Create character, name, pick server, and play.
19. Everything should work! Have fun
P.S. After this, my Custom Rom, |Feb 27| Energy™ -.¸¸.•´¯ Sense 3.0 ROM Collection ¯´•.¸¸. – by NRGZ28, stopped having it’s cool tv transitions when I locked and unlocked it. So I deleted the new build.prop after getting the game working and pasted the original build.prop saved in step 9 back in the system. I cleared market cache and cleared data for google services framework. Restarted phone and game still works and now my transitions works again. If you do this, when an update is released for the game you will have to redo instructions. So save this build.prop and name it something else in your SD.
Oh, and after I unistalled and reinstalled this game over 8 times, my T-Mobile 5gb of "Unlimited Data" was throttled. I now get max download speed of 90kbps... Its a long month.

For those of you running ViperRez and miss the Htc Locations;(Footprints) app from Venasaur, I have a quick solution to get it working again.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yxhovh7z35z9zbx/jRrZKD36JX
1. Download the zips and two folders in the link and place them on your phone
2. Flash the zips in recovery first
3. Take the files from system_app and copy them to /system/app using a file explorer(root explorer) and change the permissions to rw-r-r for all files
4. Take the files from system_lib and copy them to /system/lib using a file explorer(root explorer) and change the permissions to rw-r-r for all files
5. Reboot phone and enjoy the Htc locations app again
P.s. The reason I use Locations is because I live in a rural area without internet all the time and its nice to have offline gps maps when I go hiking and such without them expiring after 30 days like google maps, so if its not to much trouble could you put it in as an option in aroma Joelz? I'm sure others in rural areas would appreciate it as much as me. Plus your rom is the only sense 4.0 one that I've gotten Locations to work on.
can you get the HTC Twitter widget goin too?
I tried but I don't know which lib or framework files it needs to go along with the apk's, if someone else knows then I'm sure it would be just as easy as htc locations.
mine keeps telling me it cant connect to the server right after it tells me to download, retry gets the same result. Cancel leaves the program. Thos are my only options. Any ideas?

I've added "Footprints_system_files_signed.zip" to the dropbox folder, try flashing both of the zips in recovery first then replacing the system/app and system/lib files and be sure you fixed the permissions to read/write for user and read only for the other two (rw,r,r)
I added those but it still says can't connect to server for downloading location files (before the app launches). Any ideas? Maybe an alternate way to get them?

If I didn't work I have no clue as I'm not a really a developer or anything I just noticed another thread that got locations working on another phone so I just took the files needed for them to run from the team pkmn rom (since its a sense 4.0 rom for rezound that had locations working on it) put them in there right place on my phone rebooted and it worked for me. When I took the files from the other phone and tryed it didn't work and gave me the same problems your having. Silly question but your trying this in a rezound and not another phone right ? If you using a different phone you'll need to find a rom for that phone with a similar build that has locations working, pull the files from it and put them on your rom. Also some people say to install LocationsInstaller.apk but when I tryed to install it it wouldn't work so I just stuck it in system/app rebooted and the location app appeared in my launcher finally.
Also not sure if this has anything to do with it but when I was running xXx I downloaded the maps of the west and midwest to use offline, So I already had the offline data for the maps when I attempted to get this working. Also its off by about 50 feet but when I'm hiking the backcountry without internet I can live with 50 feet.
My advice would be to try and install the LocationsInstaller.apk and see if it actually installs and if it does reboot your phone and try to launch the app, if it launches it should tell you its out of date and needs to download files, let it do its thing reboot again and if all went well it should work. If it doesn't I'm out of ideas for now and maybe someone else (developer) can chime in with there thoughts.
I never intended for this to be for the community but I figured if it worked for me it might for others. If all else fails for you there's and app called "Maps (-)" in the market that appears to have offline maps and lots of customizing but to get full features you need "Maps (+)" which costs $2.99 and im a cheapskate lol. MapsWithMe also seems like a good alternative that is 100% free
Nice this got on the portal!

Sorry if am posting on the wrong thread, but pls does anybody have an alternative download link for the viperrez rom?..the link on the main thread is dead
From personal experience on a sense rom WiFi drops in and out regularly even though my router is fine and every other device connected to it is fine. It is annoying as it always happens to drop when I need data such as when I'm browsing Google+ or need to search something on Google Now. WiFi drops, 3G connects, 3G disconnects, WiFi connects, all of that creates about a 5 second wait time which is NOT negligible.
Anyway, I started reading up on what manages the WiFi connections in Android, and more specifically Sense because I don't get this issue whatsoever on CM10. I may have found the possible verdict as I successfully no longer get WiFi drops and it stays constantly connected to my access point.
What I found was that the default settings.apk from sense is what manages the WiFi connections so I decided to stick in a stock AOSP settings.apk file in there in its' stead to see if that helped. It did greatly help, and on top of that on all settings screens such as app info screens and app instalation screens I get the AOSP look that I love. It really does complete any 'sense-less' ROM.
So without further ado, I have attatched the stock settings.apk with a few mods to make it work on sense flawlessly. Please make your /system partition writeable and overwrite the sense settings.apk in /system/app/ with the one attatched. Please let me know if this works for you guys too. For reporting make sure to put your ROM version in.
Do the permissions need to be changed?

Cool, nice job man. This is the first I've seen of the AOSP menus, very cool. I'm looking forward to CM10 even more now. I wasn't having any wifi issues, but I liked the sound of having a little touch of AOSP to hold me over until an official release is out.
I used ES file explorer on Viper4G (you may wanna make a nandroid first):

You bet...you can download AOSP status bar icons through the Venom hub and then apply them in the Venom tweaks menu. I personally prefer the stock icons though because they are a bit more crisp looking.
To those with wifi issues. If you have sense, go to wifi settings choose frequency then change to 2.4 ghz.

Hey Art2Fly, I would suggest you either make a new thread or change the title of this one... This is a pretty big deal outside of the WiFi issue! I am more excited about the AOSP styled settings menu! That's pretty significant, and I would imagine that all the devs making non-Sense ROMs will be baking this into their ROM. Nice job - I love the new look!
Premo - I totally agree on the ICS theme... Not quite polished enough for me yet. So close to pure AOSP without having AOSP... Haha. It's really impressive how much Sense they removed.

That's strange. Yeah, factory reset won't help because that clears the data and cache partitions only, but this modification is to the system partition. You could try downloading a Sense based rom (like Mean, Clean, Fresh, etc.), open up the zip file and pull the settings.apk out of there to replace the one you've got now...it should be the same as the one you had originally. Did you do a nandroid backup first?

To those with Wifi issues, have you noticed a difference with the new setting apk? Kinda wanna try this assuming it works as the OP says

Since the Note 3 is new, and so far, there is only one custom Rom, I've seen the "how do I disable camera sounds" question asked a few times.
I'm sure your favorite developer will incorporate this feature, into future Roms, like they have in the past, for previous devices. This is mainly for us impatient noobs.
You must be rooted. Using a root explorer, navigate to /system/csc. Backup your feature.xml. Navigate to /system/csc/SPR/system/csc. Copy feature.xml. Navigate back to /system/csc. Paste the new file, over writing the old one. Open the new feature.xml, scroll to the camera section, and change:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>false</
CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
to:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</
CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Save, exit,
Set permissions to rw-r--r--
Reboot
Note: I used 'Root Explorer'. ES File Explorer may also work.
Here is a list of potential csc parameters, gathered from other phones. I didn't create this list. I found it about a year ago, and thought it might be interesting, to play around with.
Edit: the text file came from @kkoolpatz

I followed this exactly I'm still not getting that option to silence the shutter. Is there a detail you left out or am I just missing something? I tried twice

I edited the OP, to make it clearer, and modified the method, slightly.
One other possibility. Backup your feature.xml. Navigate to /system/csc/SPR/system/csc. Copy feature.xml. Navigate back to /system/csc. Paste the new file, over writing the old one. Open the new feature.xml, and change:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>false</
CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
to:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</
CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
(You're changing 'false' to 'true,)
Save, exit,
Set permissions to rw-r--r--
Reboot
Very useful. Thank you.
Thanks for the clarification in the OP. I now got it to work. Problem I had before was that I did not realize that I was simply changing false to true. Super simple.

Great! It's good to hear that the instructions where clear enough to be followed. There's a lot more that can be enabled, such as using the camera during calls. It's the same principle, just a matter of searching through the feature.xml, and flipping or changing the variables.
Something to add to the first post. Make a backup of the original in case you ever screw up.

Always good advice, but it's already there. Unless you're talking about a nandroid...
Must have missed it. I was going to post the same thing since that was one of the first things I did when rooted but never got around to it. Glad someone posted it for others. Always good to share info. However you should have done it in the DEV section with a [MOD] Tag. Post some of the other tweaks too. It'll disappear here in General.

Yeah, maybe so. I went back and forth in my mind, and decided that this really isn't development, so here we are in 'General'.
I had a bunch of these edits, when I had my Note 2. I'll have to dig through, and see what additional features we can enable on the Note 3. Any help is definitely appreciated.
Geez, i wonder why Sprint wont include this option by default. On the at&t Note 3, the option to silence is already baked in.

Sprint can't afford a lawsuit when some idiot takes a silent upskirt photo and someone decides to sue them for not having it make noise.
I'm on stock rooted and es explorer gives me a permission denied error when I try to overwrite features.xml from the SPR folder to system/csc, also unable to rename or edit directly from system/csc but I can copy and paste elsewhere to back up.

Open ES File Explorer and tap the phone menu button. A pane should open on the left side of the screen. Scroll to the bottom, and turn "Root Explorer" on. When the Super User prompt pops up, be sure to allow it.
Root explorer was already on, but I toogled on off just in case and it still fails. See screenshots

I'm not sure what the problem is. ES File had some problems with root, about a year ago, but I thought they got that fixed. I use it everyday, but not the root functions. Maybe you can try going into SuperSU, selecting ES File, and tapping "forget", then go back into ES, and accept the SU prompt.

Still failing after forgetting, I also reinstalled both ES and SU and no good. Any other free root explorers I can test? Or can anyone else using es verify if it's working for them?

There are several free in the Play Store. Maybe try a few?

I downloaded 'Root Browser' from the play store and this did the trick, ES Explorer is having root issues with the Note 3, well at least on my phone since no one else confirmed. I added the shutter menu (working) , enabled camera during calls (working), and tried to add a call button from the logs list but this didn't appear to work.
Thanks again!
