Very Slow USB Thumb drive copy speeds through dock - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

So my EEE Pad Transformer TF101 died (a very sad day for me). The warranty I purchased with the Transformer gave me an instant replacement and as it happens an upgrade to the Transformer Prime 32GB TF300T with the dock.
I have observed 2 things.
1: when transferring files from my Patriot 16GB USB 2.0 thumb drive the files transfer quickly at the expected speeds (around 10mbs). This is consistent regardless of the file format on the USB drive.
2: When transferring files from my Corsair 64GB USB 3.0 thumb drive the files transfer painfully slow. It takes around 10 minutes to transfer 300mb. I have tried NTFS and exFAT for file formats and neither improve the performance.
My question is, is this common? Has anyone else come across this problem. Is there a compatibility issue with 64GB thumb drives?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

I don't know if this is relevant but my hard drive is also a USB 3.0, and I just tested by copying a 700mb movie file, and it did it in probably under a min or possibly a little bit over. But definitely no where near 10 min for sure.
I have unlocked my prime and flashed Custom roms on it. Not sure if the custom roms plays a part in that effect?
Hope that helps.

I found copying files to/from USB drives to be very slow regardless of the drive. I have an 8GB sandisc drive that was ridiculously slow. The fix was (sadly) unlocking and going with Androwook rom. Now it's at least comparable to my windows tablet.
You can try unmounting/remounting the drive from settings. It appears to be related to the IO performance issues you can read alot about. The JB update for Prime should hopefully fix the issues by bringing in newer drivers from nvidia.

Thanks for the information and tips. I guess I will use my old 16GB USB key for now and hope that JB solves my problem. It is strange to me that the 64GB USB Key worked fine in the original TF101 and dies in the newer TF300T.
Thanks again.

[Q] usb thumbdrive not mounting

My first post, but I've been reading in this forum for two months, a couple hours each day. It's habit forming.
Gtab, tnt lite v.4.1.0
I have a USB adapter made by Sigg that has a 16gig microSD inserted. Formatted (several times) FAT32. When inserted in the gtab USB host slot the disk is not mounted without a lot of plugging and unplugging and praying to the gods. There have been a few messages telling me that the 'card is damaged' when it is not. The microSD card works fine when inserted in the gtab's microSD slot. But it can take hours of fiddling to get the card to mount in the USB slot.
After lots of searching it seems that everyone else takes USB flash drives on the gtab for granted. They all seem to work. Mine doesn't, but works fine in my XPpro 32bit laptop.
If anyone can give me some ideas for troubleshooting this I'd appreciate it.
By the way, this forum is something of a phenomenon. After looking at the gtab threads I went out and bought mine at Sears. What better way to get acquainted with Android? My thanks go out to everyone here who has contributed. Someday I might be able to contribute as well.
I think about ways to better manage the gtablet xda forum, a lot. It has become a monster - but it's not a bad monster, more like a cute and cuddly Sesame Street monster.
How to organize all this fabulous information so that it can be easily searched and utilized? Good question.
All I can say is - keep up the good work. This forum is a fantastic resource.
Thanks all
Two thoughts:
First: I'd change the title. This isn't a thumbdrive issue, really, so much as a USB SD Reader problem.
Second: I've run into similar issues myself. But I've noticed that I have a couple odd ball readers tht don't work on Mac but does work on Windows. This may be a driver issue. My suggestion would be to try another SD card reader and see if that makes a difference.
I also have a USB adapter with a micro SD inside of it. I find that it does not mount on bootup, but it mounts fine if I remove it and re-insert it.
I was wondering if there is an app for sending a software command to mount the USB. I have looked, but have not found.
smalis, my question exactly!
Taking aaltieri's reply into consideration I experimented with a plain-jane thumbdrive, an adapter with a standard SD, and my adapter with the microSd. Others have demonstrated that adapters with more than one slot will not work. Both my adapters have one slot only.
So here's the intriguing results: The plain-jane thumbdrive is just as unreadable as both adapters UNLESS you boot the machine with the adapter/thumbdrive in the slot, then remove it and put it back in. Then they all read after a short detection period. BUT once the drives are removed after detection they cannot be read again until the machine is shut down and rebooted with the drive in, then remove it and put it back in for detection.
What we need is a method for mounting and unmounting USB drives. I've searched and cannot find a way to unmount the drive under tnt lite. It does not show up in settings/storage like the sd cards do.
By the way, the little Sigg adapter is very tiny, sticking out only 1/4" from the side of the gtab. I got it at Fry's Electronics for $6. I leave it in the slot full-time and it helps keep the power button from being activated when the gtab's inside it's sleeve. I use a Belkin 'non-slip' netbook sleeve (also at Fry's) and the gtab fits only slightly loose. I use a couple of ultrathin mouse pads/screen protectors, one on each side, to increase padding. The Belkin sleeve is difficult to drop due to the grippy sides. The ultrathin mouse pads are marketed for netbook use, to put under the lcd when closing the lid to protect the screen (also Fry's Electronics - what can I say, I'm hooked on the place).
The idea I had was to have 16gig in the SD slot and 16gig in the USB slot. The 32gig microSDHC's are cost prohibitive for me right now. And I still have 11gig remaining on the internal memory. I'd better get to work filling it . . .
Yeah, I have one of those tiny USB micro-SD adapters also (elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader from Amazon), and am very happy with its small footprint.
I had same idea as you - I have a Wintec 16 GB Class 10 MicroSD (~$30 on Newegg) in the SD slot and another one in the USB slot.
However, I have no problem reading the USB slot after unplugging and plugging it in once, or multiple times.
The only time I cannot read it is when I boot with it in. Then, I have to unplug it and plug it in once.
Yours seems more flaky.
Just wanted to note that I had similar issues reading the contents of a FAT32 formatted thumbdrive when using the default iFileManager on Vegan. I downloaded the File Manager app by Adao Team on the market and I can read the thumbdrive contents just fine when using that app.
A follow up for anyone interested.
I migrated to vegantab 5.1 to get mouse and keyboard functionality. I also loaded the small update to 5.1 that has sniffer included.
I don't think sniffer is much to write home about, but it does mount all the usb 2.0 drives and even all the multi-adapters that I've thrown at it. Some posts have pointed out that the multi-adapters don't work. But they do, at least in my experience. I used a Sony adapter that has sd, micro-sd, sony's memory stick, compact flash, and some other port. My 16gig compact flash cards from my camera are read without a problem AFTER opening sniffer. The iFile manager that comes with vegantab does not see the usb 2.0 or the adapter until sniffer is opened. Then the system sees the drives with no problem.
It works every time.
I decided to use an HP wireless mini keyboard. It's a perfect match for the gtab. I thought about dropping $80 for the new Verbatim folding bluetooth keyboard but the HP allows for much better touch typing and I need to do that. Best Buy has a cd/dcd carrying case made by Init that is essentially a hard case that fits the HP keyboard perfectly one the cd sleeves are removed. There's room under the keyboard for headphones, flash memory, and other odds and ends. With vegatab and the mouse fix, the keyboard is easily detected and the mouse pointer works great.
Anyway, it looks as if the mounting issue is one that can easily be taken care of with an app. Another more recent poster on this issue has noted that changing file managers allowed him to mount usb drives that iFileManager would not see. But sniffer works and it's there for seperate download if anyone wants it. I think it looks like crap and doesn't do much. I'll use it in the meantime, though.

I didn't even think of Sniffer. I have a cheapo USB reader that was intermittently working (1 out of 60?). After your suggesting, if I open sniffer then plug it in, it sees it every time.
Folks,
I don't know that there is an answer I have seen to all your questions/observations.
I will say:
1. microSD post and USB on the tablet are not plug and play like Windows.
2. When I change my USB key or microSD, I always shut down and likewise I
always shut down before removing them.
3. Yes, I know that's a pain if you change a lot, but for me it makes sure
Android's flicted OS searches for, finds them, and in turn properly shuts them
down before I remove them.
For me, in and out as need just doesn't work.

EDIT: P. S. -- You all seemed like sharp guys. Should I have asked if you
are looking for the files under /USBdisk?
In my experience, thumb drive mounting is hit and miss. Maybe it's just the drives that I'm using, but it's unreliable. Also, with Gingerbread and Pershoot's kernels, he references having to revert something in order to get USB mount to work (thinking about it, that might refer to mounting the tab to a computer). I would suggest getting used to unmounting your external micro card in Android and growing out a fingernail or two so you can pop that sucker out. I think this is a low priority to the devs, and maybe it should be.

[Q] Flyer and external usb HDD

Hi,
I am thinking about buying the flyer as I do a lot of nights and I thought it would be an amazing tablet for playing dvd's on.
My question is: I have a 500gb external HDD formatted with NTFS. If I bought a micro usb to micro usb cable, would I be able to plug it into the flyer and play my dvd's? I have ripped them to AVI files and are arround 1gb each?
Also would I be able to run it of power at the same time?
Doubtful. I haven't tried myself but most mobile devices aren't set up to allow their usb port to function with external storage... I could however be wrong. Take ur hdd into a store and give it a shot. Worth a try...

1. The Flyer has no standard micro usb jack! HTC use the same port as HDI output but you can connect the provided USB (not micro) cable.
2. As already said, you need the drivers on the Flyer to do so and I didn't check it. Maybe someone else?
3. You can connect the Flyer in other ways to external storage such as media servers (over WiFi).
Sounds a bit much for what I want to do! I am also considering the Dell Inspiron mini 10.1 which has a flip arround 10" touch screen!
.
Have a look at this thread.
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=46483
You dont even have to mod the device, just put in a 500GB drive and install ESfile Explorer and it streams all your media files (encoded for the Flyer of course).
OH, BTW, works fine with my A70 AND my Flyer...
Interesting, but I'd admit that I was checking out the videos on the Dell 10" touch screen, it looked so awsome that I went and ordered one. Average price seemed to be £480, but then I found an next day delivery from amazon for £407! So gone for that instead. In my opinion best of both worlds.
For my the flyer looked amazing but didn't have all the functionality I needed!
Cheers for your help guys!

Photography workflow suggestions?

I've had to return 2 primes, but my third will hopefully come soon from Hhgregg.
Anyway,
I'm going to Thailand in March and wanted to use my Prime and Dock in my photography workflow.
What I have currently is a Canon 50D camera (uses Compact Flash cards), External USB HDD and an external card reader/USB hub. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0028MEZFE/ref=oh_o05_s00_i00_details
I'm trying to figure out the best way to transfer off my CF cards to my external HDD. It's not looking like I will be able to have them both connected at the same time. So, currently it's looking like I may need to transfer from CF to internal MicroSD card, then to HDD. However, I noticed on a test that the transfer rate was really slow doing it that way.
The USB hub/Card reader is seen by the prime, but I could not see both a CF card and external USB HDD connected to that hub at the same time. Which is what I was hoping for.
Any suggestions on a workflow or questions if I didn't make enough since above?
Thanks
I would try a usb hub and a usb card reader, idk if usb card readers work past the ASUS one, which iirc plugs into the docking port.

Disk speeds (eMMC, msd/sd, usb)

For chuckles I ran the following a few times: dd count=1k bs=1M if=/dev/zero of=${test location}/crap.dd
Internal memory yields variable performance (I've got as high as a bit over 16M/s) but seems to pretty stable at roughly 10M/s, like a Class 10 MicroSD (I don't know what if any scales are normal for eMMC). I tested both with BusyBox in /mnt/sdcard and with GNU coreutils in my Debian chroot. This is a far cry from my work station, which almost pulled 60M/s on it's SATA drive but eh, who am I to complain as long as it beats my phones MicroSD. Just wish the prime managed heavy disk writes better.
My 8GB Class 4 SanDisk MicroSD card lives up to it's 4M/s rating when in the port. Using an adapter in the dock doesn't seem to be any real problem.
Now my 4GB Kingston Data Traveler.... gives > 1M/s but much less than <2M/s in the dock. Just to be sure I plugged it into my work station for a single test, and got 2.2M/s.
ASUS advertises USB 2.0, and my work station has a Core 2 Duo E8400, so I'm sure it's secretly a USB 1.1 problem . I think this goes to show, if you want a cheap method of storage, it's probably better to get a cheap MicroSD card. Especially with how many x86 systems now have them.

[Q] connecting to USB HDD

Hi,
I'm looking to get either the Tab or Note 10.1, but need to know whether its possible to transfer images from the micro SD card to an external USb powered HDD. I know I can get hold of a micro usb male/ mini usb male adapter to link the Tab/Note to the HDD, but don't know if the Tab/Note will power the drive, or if it's possible to transfer pics in this way.
I'm planning a roadtrip in the USA later this year and would not have regular access to wifi to upload images to 'dropbox' etc so would rather back them up to a HDD.
I know there are several similar postings, but no suitable/applicable answers.
Suggestions/answers ?
Cheers

The Tab 10.1 doesn't have a micro SD card slot - the Tab 2 does. On the Tab 10.1 there's a chunk of the internal memory mounted as /sdcard that you can store your photos on.
As far as moving files to an external drive goes, you can do that with most file managers so that's no problem.
One issue you may have is that the external drive will need to be formatted as FAT 32, not NTFS. That means that you can't copy files larger than 4GB to the external drive. That's probably not going to be a problem for you if you're moving images (not movies).
To connect the drive, you'll need an OTG cable, which are fairly inexpensive. However, there's no guarantee that the tablet will be able to power the drive. External thumb drives work fine for me. I haven't tried any portable hard drives, but as long as the current demand is fairly low it may work. Some people have had success with portable drives, so it's worth giving it a try, especially if you're talking about a notebook size drive as those tend to be less power hungry.
I have successfully mounted an external HDD via a externally powered USB-Hub. The FAT32 partition can be mounted without additional software, the NTFS partition can be mounted with the free app "NTFS mount". USB-Sticks will be powered by the tablet without problem. The problem is, that the combined card reader / USB adaptor can only be used with one function at a time. So I had to copy the SD-card to the internal storage of the tab and then move it from there to the external HDD.
You might want to think about buying an Intenso Memory 2 Move HDD. It's an external 2.5" HDD with a battery (6 hours) and a wifi hotspot. You can access the drive via wifi, ethernet RJ45 and USB 3.0. Works like a charm with Android.
Regards
Achim
Sorry, it was the Tab 2 (10.1 screen, stylus thing etc) I was meaning but couldn't find a heading for it. Is it likely to power an external 2.5 drive ?
Most certainly it will not power HDD. The easiest solution is an external miniature USB hub with power supply.
Regards
Achim
I would like to mention that HDD must be partitioned as GPT to work otherwise it shows as corrupt.
