Does anyone know why losing 4g is such a common issue with custom roms? Does anyone know how to remedy it?

Has anybody else been having people call and it go straight to VM? Or losing data occasionally? I don't live in the greatest signal area, about -80 to -85 pretty consistent, but I would think that would be enough to maintain service? This is a new issue, it has only started in the last month or so. Is anybody else having these issues? It's not specific to my device, it also happens on my fiancee's D2. (used to be my old phone and is rooted) The main reason I ask is that I am wondering if it is specific to my area(or particular tower), or if it is something verizon is doing to the network.
I finally managed to upgrade my RAZR to ICS manually yesterday; however, now it seems that my 4G connection is poorer than before. For example, at work I used to have full/ almost full bars for 4G and now I only pick up 3G.
Has anyone else experienced this issue or know how to correct it?
Thank you,

I noticed this on stock rom as well as Elegancia at&t. When on WIFI and even with the mobile data turned OFF, the 4G icon just stays up in the status bar. This is an issue for me as I really need to know when I ACTUALLY have data, rather than my phone telling me I do when I really don't.
I searched and found a few other people mention this problem but nobody ever replied back.
What's the deal with this? Are those few others and I the only ones with this problem? How can I fix it?
Is anyone else having huge network issues after flashing a 4.3 ROM? Nothing I do will get my usable signal back. Sure, it's there, but every text I try to send won't work. I can receive them, sometimes, but it's mostly been a nightmare. Anyone else or just me?
Try changing radios. Then do a test with your case on and case off. Have heard of cases causing issues with Sammy antenna.

Trying to isolate the problem to see if its my phone, the ROM, or router. I had no problems before I flashed. It seems like I randomly drop my network and it doesn't want to reconnect without a reboot. LTE also is very intermittent, sometimes going from 4 bars to none or dropping to 3G without even moving. Its been getting very annoying and has been dropping calls lately. Has anyone else noticed this. Is it a carbon issue, a CyanogenMod one? If so does. Anyone know any good gpe based ROMs as an alternative?

Typically Wifi issues phone wise are kernel related if the kernel for example uses different drivers. Cellular issues are typically related to the Radio. ROM itself should not greatly affect radio signal nor Wifi.
