[Q] Correct CF-Root kernel for BVLPA? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've been reading through the CF-Root release thread trying to work out which kernel version to use for my phone (I9100P).
PDA: I9100PBVLPA
Kernel: 3.0.15-I9100PBVLPA-CL364024
From this I assume I need the LPA kernel, however there is no LPA CF-Root kernel so I assume I need to pick one that's close.
If I go down one, I get LP9, which is reported in the thread to have "death sleep" issues, so I don't like the sound of using that.
If I go up one, I get LPB, which is reported to have "problems mounting secure storage". I'm not sure if that would affect me, but once again, it makes me cautious about using it.
I guess that leaves me with either LP8, or LPC.
Does anyone know which would be best?

...

Thanks.
What is the worse case if the kernel doesn't work, does the phone not just boot?. In this situation (based on what you said) I assume I'm still able to use ODIN to try another kernel?

the worst case is that u will be stuck in the boot logo. but u can always access Dwnld mode to recover back for sure

One other thing.
One method specified in that thread to remove the warning triangle is to flash a stock signed kernel back onto the device, however the thread doesn't give any indication as to where I might find one of these. Searching the forums I found a listing of stock ROMs, but I'm not sure if these are what I need or not.
Also, if I'm rooting my phone so I can install CM9 (as my battery life on my stock ROM is dire), is there any point me doing this, or will flashing CM9 just re-add the warning triangle anyway?

I've been doing a bit more reading and it seems that CF-Root has some issues with the P variant of the I9100 (which is what I have).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26263057&highlight=i9100p#post26263057
Can anyone confirm that they've successfully managed to use CF-Root with an I9100P? I don't care if I lose NFC as I never use it.
Alternatively, if anyone knows for definite that CF-Root won't work with an I9100P then I'll move on and try and find another way to root.
Note: I find it really hard to get information for the I9100P variants, so much so that I've just taken to assuming that they're just an I9100 with NFC, and that things for the I9100 will work with them, but I'll probably lose the NFC capabilities (which as I said, I never use).

I bit the bullet and tried it out. Everything went fine, and I now have a rooted phone using CM9.
For reference to anyone else, I used the CF-Root LP8 kernel to gain root, and then installed CM9 using the "recovery" method on their wiki. I didn't bother trying to remove the triangle as it doesn't really bother me.
Thanks for the help.

[Q] At&t gsII display/kernel issues

After a convoluted process and many mishaps on my part (I bricked it) my phone has a working, rooted and stripped down version of 2.3.6 on it. Which works as intended except the screen is now grainy and the colors are over-saturated. (side note: unfortunately I did not do a backup of the stock firmware-stupid I know)
I'm guessing this is a driver issue with the firmware or gpu because the pictures I took before I tried getting cyanogen on my phone now look very pixelated; almost like one of those cheesy after effects. I tried updating the firmware and it said I was current. Is there a way to update drivers? Do I have to find the original firmware for my phone (I looked on here the forum with the huge list of branded and unbranded and was at a loss)?
Also in my endeavor to attain the cm7 I tried rom manager which never worked even after getting the pre-rooted firmware. It will let me download the new clockwork but it does not appear to flash it and any attempt to install or reboot to clockwork doesn't do anything (gives prompts, I say yes, nothing happens). As a result of following the cyanogen wiki twice it says I have two custom firmwares and I cannot get into clockwork at all. I could the first time through before I bricked it but now I can't. Is there a way to remove the extra kernel?
The only reason I have a working phone is because of Odin. Is there a way to use Odin to install cm7 and would that fix the display issues or am I better off finding the stock firmware and hoping the display will default back to working?
Thank you in advance,
noob

Branded? Unbranded?
There is only one variant of the I777 - AT&T Branded. Anything in the Development forum for the I777 will work on an I777.
It's not like the I9100 with a bunch of minor subvariants.

Are you able to reboot the phone in recovery using ADB?
Its gotten to the point where nothing I try works. I managed to get cm7 installed and it got stuck in a boot loop. Flashed back to the stripped down version again. Everything that could go wrong has. For now I just want to go back to whatever firmware came with my phone out of the box. The startup logo was at&t so I guess I'll go for the branded version (which I can't find on here--its almost 3 am I apologize for my idiocy) and hope the screen issue is resolved.
Thanks again

Which you can't find? Someone posted the link to my return to stock guide in post #2 of this thread.
If you return to complete stock using Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to stock package, you will regain the AT&T boot logo instead of any custom boot logo. The phone will be just like it was when you first took it out of the box.
If you want the stock ROM plus root, Entropy has a package for that also. Just flash one of his packages with Odin, or use the One-Click downloaders for his package that are linked in my guides.
Update: You can also download all of these from my Download Repository.
Okay so I did the return to stock without root one click and that went fine. However the display is still not working properly. Solid colors are fine and I even went into the debug screen and tested all the colors. They were brilliant but any dimming or shading of two colors just looks wrong. The only thing that I can think of is the bootloader is wrong. It says my phone is a I9100 which it isn't. However I'm not sure why a bootloader would affect the display. Does the I777 have a different initialization process for the gpu? Or is the issue somewhere else?

That might affect it but I highly doubt it.
So do you have any idea what could have caused it? I tried searching the forums but I couldn't find somebody with a similar problem.
Where exactly does it say your phone is I9100?
It shows "Samsung galaxy s II I9100" before the at&t load screen.

The return to stock did not complete correctly. This screen appears after flashing a non-stock kernel with Odin/Heimdall.

Yes. The very first method I tried was the heimdall from the cyanogen wiki. I've used various methods without success. However the last effort was to restore the phone and I used the one click stock without root. Was it supposed to restore the bootloader? Also I updated ota and the display works much better. The remaining discoloration/pixelation could have been there all along as I didn't wait long to put cyanogen on it (1 day) and I have nothing to compare it to.

The return-to-stock-with-root shouldn't touch bootloaders - but it should have restored a stock kernel. IF you're getting the "yellow triangle" I9100 boot screen, the last thing flashed with Odin/Heimdall was NOT a stock kernel.
There is no yellow triangle. I used the exe from the link in the first response in this forum. In any case I'll throw a picture of the phone while turned off but charging tonight. The display issues aren't grave but they are noticeable and annoying. Do you know of an app that allows you adjust graphical/display settings? Maybe it would suffice.
I found information concerning my display issues. Apparently it's an issue with the phone. Its called black crush. My phone has this and oversaturated red. So shading details are pixelated and reddish.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124669
Also I noticed people repeatedly mentioning screen modes under setting>displays however my phone does not have this option. Also all of the mentions have been under the forum for the regular version of the phone not the AT&T variant. Is the AT&T version missing this option or am I blind?

AT&T version is missing screen tuning unless you run a custom ROM that readds it like Serendipity VIII or Unnamed.
Okay cool. So I used the one click with root and the wifi is broken and it won't let me do an OTA. however I had previously used the one click without root and I was able to OTA and that solved the broken wifi. What would be the easiest way to fix the wifi?
Flash cwm>factory restore/wipe (I don't have cwm and I remember the cyanogen wiki way to get cwm messed up my soft buttons--two didn't work anymore)
Or
Flash the 12/21 dd kernel (I did originally try this route. However Odin didn't recognize the kernel. I even repackaged I with just zImage. Still nothing.)
Thank You again Entropy
DrMorbo
Sounds like there is something broken about the oneclick... Try flashing the return-to-stock package with Heimdall. Heimdall also lets you flash kernel zImages without packaging into a tar.
However Heimdall needs its own driver mojo on Windows - I can't really help you with this, I've flashed a device from Windows only once, and that was the Tab 10.1 because Heimdall won't talk to it.
Nevermind. I tried the update a third time. It decided to work (48 hours later). Everything works. Wifi works. The screen is better (I used voodoo screen tuning to greatly diminish the black crush and red saturation. I can finally customize my phone now. Any nifty apps you know of Entropy? (Regular or root needed)
Thank you again Entropy,

[Q] Newcomer here, be nice! CWM related

Hey all,
I just received my i777 and I'm impressed. Coming from a sgs4g seems like a huge improvement, though the devices look physically the same LOL (with the i777 being a bit on the larger side).
Anyways, I've been flashing roms for about a year now with my sgs4g. The forums for the sgs4g had very detailed instructions when flashing, instructions like, what to do if coming from stock, but on this forum ppl just assume you have CWM installed.
What I want is a safe way to upgrade to, let's say, phone bricker. I've noticed that all roms are installed through CWM, and all OP say is "make sure CWM is installed", but there's no mention whatsoever on how to install CWM on this phone.
Maybe i'm complicating things a little bit. On my previous phone, Rom Manager downloaded from market was a NO NO because it'd brick it. So we had to flash a modded CWM via odin made specifically for our phones. Maybe for this phone installing rom manager is all that is needed? yes? OK, found the FAQ. no ROM manager.
Also, somehow this phone came rooted... I bought it new from a store but the unlocked version since I live outside USA.
So, if I'm not mistaken, I should just install rom manager, select my phone from the list, flash CWM recovery and flash away roms on the dev section. Am I correct? I don't want to brick my phone
I would not use Rom manger it's proven to be more of a headache for this device. Look on the dev section there are a couple of packages that you can use to get cwm. If your already rooted you could simply flash a custom kernel like entropys daily driver which already has cwm included in kernel.
Again, if your rooted, easiest way could be to simply use mobile Odin to flash custom kernel(I'm assuming your running gingerbread).
I bought the full version of mobile ODIN. makes life a little simpler when flashing, in my opinion. It's worth the few bucks.

Running GB, yes. It's (i think) completely stock: GB KJ4.
I've checked and I have standard recovery, so I'm looking for the best and safest way to get cmw.
Mobile odin looks like a good option, but would I need the full paid version?

You don't need pro version, lite version will do just fine. Are you sure you're rooted? You have superuser app? Whether you're rooted or not look here(if you are rooted look at #3 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Check out this thread, was my experience and I'm running PhoneBricker just fine!
However, backup your apps before flashing and factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik after (possibly before as well) and you should be fine! Will root then you can flash away.

One other point for you. Your phone was flashed, in most probability by the folks who sold it to you, with a leaked version of Gingerbread, UCKJ4. As a result, your flash count is probably at 1, and the secondary bootloader was probably replaced with one that disables the ability to clear the flash counter with a usb jig. If this matters to you, you can test first with a jig to see if it will reset, and if not, you can flash the original UCKH7 secondary bootloader to fix it. Needed files can be found in the Download Repository.
Oh, and my guide explains how to flash a modified kernel containing ClockworkMod Recovery if you need it.
Well, I flashed my phone last night. Used mobile odin for flashing a kernel (siyah) to get CWM, then flashed phone bricker via CWM like I used to do on my old phone. Everything went smooth.
Though I'm not fond on this "4.0.3", it's just a launcher that looks like ICS but I don't want to believe it's a true ICS ROM, because it feels weird, I certainly prefer stock GB (or a custom GB rom) instead of some heavily modded rom with ICS theme.

There're several new terms I need to learn about this phone that weren't used on sgs4g. Such as DPI (i.e lowering it, what for? isn't that a step back?) and flash counter.
I suppose flash count is just a counter for how many times you have flashed the phone with custom Roms, so that warranty people can check if a returned phone was damaged due to bad flash, or something like that. Am I correct?
If that's the case, then I'm not too worried about flash count because I live outside US, and my AT&T phone wouldn't get warranty over here, but I'll definitely look into that, to check where my counter is at and to check if resetting it back to 0 is still possible.
I'll be checking up on the links you provided.
Thanks a lot.

It is a true ICS rom. Samsung didn't do a lot of cosmetic changes when they moved the S2 to ICS though...most changes are under the hood.
If you want something that looks and feels more like true ICS, you should consider trying either CM9 or AOKP. They are both based on Google's source code, nothing Touchwiz about them.
Or if you'd rather stick with what you have, you can always try different launchers. I'm running ICS, but I use Go Launcher and it runs beautifully.

That is mostly correct. You're right about the purpose of the flash counter, but it actually counts how many times you flash kernels, not roms. And even then, it only increments if you flash a kernel via Odin in download mode. Flashing a kernel in Mobile Odin or CWM doesn't touch the counter.
Incrementing the flash counter also places that possibly annoying yellow triangle on bootup on your phone. Since you're on ICS, you can just use triangle away app from play store (free version is on here somewhere) to get rid of it, though I'm not sure if that'll fix the whole secondary bootloaders thing (probably not). I think it'd be worth it to fix that just so you don't run into anymore problems later if you decide to change something, especially since after the fixes you can just nandroid back to your current setup, but it's not essential and completely up to you.

I'm confused why this thread was started. There ARE detailed instructions in the stickies and by using Google search along with the words XDA after the search u would easily find any and all information needed. Why do we need a thread dedicated to helping one person read stickies which already have this information.

To sum up for OP
1. Strongly suggest NOT to use ROM Manager on any custom ROMs unless you are surely running CyanogenMod ROM.
2. Check the "About phone" to see if it is true ICS or ICS-theme GB.

flash fluxi kernel - went wrong

sorry, but the fluxi kernel thread is now closed so i'll ask here...
skip to bold text for the query, rest is background info
[history: been a windows mobile for some time, now have SGII and first experience with android. YES, i have been about here for some time before and i have been reading/searching. however to android, i am a noob. couldn't find anything on this]
i know i need to root the kernel in order to flash custom ROM, which i thought i was reading the right thread(s) and instructions. i thought i'd flash (following to the letter) a new kernel, which i assumed would root the device aswell. i went ahead and flashed fluxi kernel (good battery/performance, medium tweaks etc). odin reported a 'pass', but to my horror the phone showed yellow triangle followed by a permanent black screen.
[after i changed soiled underwear]
completely forgot that two days ago (in preparation for safe flash/root!) i'd read you need to flash SPECIFIC rooted kernel according to your device. blah blah blah, have sorted all this out, wiped data/cache and flashed CF-Root 5.4 from chainfie's thread. all good, rooted, have backed up everything, all working ok now.
before flashing custom rom (resurrection remix), i want to flash a custom kernel - fluxi.
1. did it go wrong simply because i hadn't rooted the device first?
2. now i have rooted with correct kernel, can i re-flash fluxi kernel with more likely success?
3. or, have i missed some other vital stage?
4. or could it just be that fluxi had issues with my device and i should try another kernel, especially as it's no longer supported
other info - running ICS 4.0.3, kernel LP7
5. is there any other device specific things i've missed? after flashing custom kernel, i can go ahead and flash resurrection remix rom, right?
EDIT: i've found that siyah kernel is good for all ICS (and still supported), so will flash ROM first, check everything works ok, then flash siyah - unless anyone shouts that i've missed something!
thanks muchly in advance. very nervous about doing anything more without checking
1. I do believe fluxi does not root your phone like cf-root does (someone correct me if im wrong), so your problem is highly due to not rooting it first. (Fluxi thread does indicate you need CM9 first, so it does mean your phone has to be rooted and with ICS)
2. Yes you can
3. From your information, doesnt seem so.
4. Unless you have a i9100G, Tmobile USA SGS2, AT&T SGS2, or other SGS2 that is not the i9100.
5. Big thing there. Flash rom, then kernel. When you install a rom, it usually comes with its own kernel, so you will end up wiping the original kernel that was installed.
Choosing kernel is your choice. Im still on 3.3.2 siyah kernel. Im getting insane battery life on it and it does everything I need. Some people simply want the latest kernel. I just want a kernel that works well for my own phone. Siyah 3.3.2 does its job, so I will keep it until I end up having a problem due to the kernel.
brilliant, many thanks indeed. haven't been round these forums for a while, good to be back and appreciate the great help when stuck.
just as side note (i'll have a tinker with the governors), no worries if no response, but are you using the default gov with siyah and getting good battery?
cheers again

[Q] GT-i19100P flashing...

Hi guys,
Back for some more invaluable help.
OK so for the record I don't feel myself a noob to flashing I've done many htc and I'm currently on blade elite on my hox at the moment, however...... I see a lot of posts warning not to do certain thing when flashing this phone - GT-i19100.
My Mrs phone is running like a dog its slow laggy and vile to use so I want to change the rom for her to make it run better, use less battery, and most and foremost actually work!!!
So I was thinking something like omega rom. basically a pretty simple stock rom without the bloatware that runs a bit better than the actual stock one.
can anyone help me with if this is actually safe or not? any suggested roms that may achieve my goals? having never had a sgs2 or any Samsung for that matter im really not sure what is available and after 300 pages of reading im still none the wiser.
cheers brett

the only most imp thing, what people suggest not to do with I9100 is that, u should not make any wipes in recovery, when ur on stock android v4.0.4 ICS. rest u can flash any Stock Sammy based/CM10/CM10.1/AOSP roms meant for I9100 for now after rooting it.
Since I9100P comes with NFC (Near Field Communication) u might lose that with some custom roms

Great thanks for that, I don't spose there is any chance you can help me with the root? like I say ive done many htc's but as you can probably imagine if I brick her phone ill get a smack in the gob lol
im on android - 4.0.4
baseband - 19100PBVLPB
kernel - 3.0.15-19100PBVLPC-CL1020445
now on my htc I use the bootloader to get into fastboot and then send cwm busybox etc via adb to the phone to achieve root. but I've noted this is nothing like that! I need to flash the relevant kernel (which I aint too sure which one yet), how does the kernel get flashed? via odin? that will then give me CWM and in turn allow me to flash a new ROM?
if I cant use cwm to to wipes etc how is that performed instead?
Sorry to be a pain cheers.
P.S. - ive no idea what NFC is or does so I doubt she will haha!!

ok ill see what I can manage now lol
I have noted that when I restart the phone with the 3 buttons pressed odin shows the yellow box but only for a second then it goes away again... any ideas? infact what actually happens is if the phone is switched on the box is yellow however when I put it into recovery mode to flash using odin it disappears and doesn't come back?

[Q] China i9100 tried to root, stuck starting, kernel prob?

Not my first time to root and install a custom rom on other phone, but this phone isn't treating me well.
So I followed the root guides to root the phone.
Downloaded an insecure kernel for i9100. Although, oddly enough, I bought this phone 2nd hand, and when I went to the "about" part for the kernel look up before tried to root it, the kernel info just contained ICS3.?? (forgot) and the date. There was no four or five letter kernel code like I've been seeing. But according to cnet (one of many rooting tutorials), the kernel version doesn't matter as you can change the kernel anytime, or after rooting in this case.
So I installed Kies to get the Samsung drivers installed. Done.
Restarted phone to download mode (volume down, home, power)
Started Odin 3 v1.83
Phone was recognized. Click the 2 boxes (Auto reboot and F. Rest Time).
Clicked PDA, loaded up an insecure kernel.
Status went through OK, ended up with "Pass!"
Phone automatically restarted.
Now the problem. It restarts, shows the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo with the big triangle underneath it, and thats it. Never leaves this screen. I thought maybe it's a kernel problem, so I tried several different insecure kernels, all with no change. I have no idea how to find what kernel was the original one that came with this phone. Would using Odin with the original secure kernel (or even insecure) solve this problem? Otherwise, what else can I do? My note 2 was stolen so I bought this s2 second hand until I can scrape up enough money for a note 2 again, but the damn thing won't even boot up now. :crying:
How can I get this working again, even to have it stock again I'd be fine (though obviously putting on a custom room with root would be best).
Well you dont seem to mention what you have tried after flashing your kernel?
Have you tried going into download or recovery mode, do they work? If so simply flash another kernel or rom.
Also, I my be wrong but there isnt a China i9100 afaik so you may have flashed incorrect kernel so system isnt booting.
Remove battery and tell/show us what label says.

There wasn't much to try, at least as far as my noob self knows about. I tried flashing 6 other kernels I found, merely taking guesses at which might possibly be the Chinese s2 one, I remember from flashing other phones that i had to look for Z or D in the kernel ID. But all of them just led to the same problem of not booting past the logo screen.
Besides just trying to start it up as normal (which doesn't work) and starting it up in download (by holding down vol+home+power), what others ways can I start it up? I don't know how to boot into recovery, and I didn't know I can flash a rom without first rooting it, which I haven't done yet because it's still stuck in start-up.
Searching enough xda threads and just googling seems show a pretty large consensus supporting the existance of a China i9100, plus I see them everywhere (as well as s3, s4, and notes), so I'm 99% sure they are an official and semi-large market for them here (after iPhones unfortunately). But even still, that doesn't help me locate the original kernel.
Under the battery, is says this:
Samsung WCDMA
Model #: GT-I9100
CMIIT ID: 2011CP2751
Do these help? So is any of the steps I did wrong, or can you otherwise point me in the right direction? Appreciate the help.
Don't post your IMEI (or your SN for that matter).

Thanks for the tip MistahBungle. Edited out.
Hate to say it, but found more help on youtube... Found a guide that walked me through replacing all the files (not just kernel) in Odin that got it back up and running. I'll follow the xda guides again and hopefully it'll work this time... Thanks anyways...
