How is your RAZR holding up? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hello fellow RAZR owners,
Just asking how are your RAZRs holding in all aspects specifically cosmetic looks. Is it closer to when you unboxed or its currently something else all together?

I'm on my 2nd RAZR (CDMA). I ended up upgrading to a MAXX Limited Edition I found on eBay.
In my 5 months with this phone it has been dropped over 20+ times. 3 of which were directly on concrete parking surfaces. I've slammed it in my car door really hard 2 times not to mention the myriads of spills and splashes. It still runs like the day I bought it. Aside from a little knick here and there on the actual phone case it's still in like new condition.
Also, I do NOT use a screen protector. Personal preference.

Actually its morphed into a navigation system that Bluetooth syncs to my car for streaming radio and provides internet to my work Laptop. All while driving and not needing to be charged all day. Forgot to mention it also places and receives phone calls. Its not what i expected when i bought it, thought i had just bought a phone.

one tiny scratch . but great

Dropped it on concrete twice and have chips around the bezel works good as new though

dropped it multiple times from 3ft+, but only once or twice (or thrice?) on hard surface such as ceramic floors or concrete. the rest is either carpet or wood.
zero protection.
zero scratch on screen. corners of the plastic bezel (wherever its angled) however, start to show some gradation... its like a bit smudge. oh, and the Motorola metal strip on front top? some scratches there.
other than that, screen and back is rock solid.

I dropped mine once on carpet from chair height. No scratches. No protection but overly careful.
SHVR MAXX

Mine has some light scratches on the screen. They are only visible when it's off and I hold it at the right angle, but I thought it should be more scratch resistant. I'm pretty careful with the screen.
The back plastic has some scuffs where it rests on my desk, but nothing else.

screen broke - warning!!!

I had my RAZR in my back pocket and rode a roller coaster.... the screen cracked. Good tjinh i bought the insurance. GORILLA Glass my a$$!!
I had a commuter otterbox on, but that doesn't protect the screen.
And no I'm not obese.
Be careful!
So you were sitting on your phone while you were getting thrown around... It's a thin device, it will flex and bend to some degree. Gorilla glass was not meant for that kind of strength.

Gotta agree with you...Otterbox is meant to offer some extra protection from dropping and moisture not having 150+ lbs sitting on it and I'm not going to try to guess all the torque and g force and bouncing and slamming one goes through on a roller coaster.
When I rode the roller coasters at 6 Flags in San Antonio I always put my D2G in my front pocket and didn't get any kinds of cracked screens.

LOL dude, are you afraid someone would snipe your ass? Yes it's kevlar coating but still...
Sorry to hear about your phone, however, I'm not surprised at all. I'm a HUGE roller coaster enthusiast. Some coasters can pull upwards of 5 Gs. So you have to take into consideration that you had anywhere from 3 to 5 times your body weight slamming into your phone.
Not to mention that if any period of intense positive G force was preceded by any negative G force, (which is a certainty on any coaster with a drop) you may have been out of your seat for a second or two on the way down from the drop, causing even more force as you slam back into your seat as you reach the bottom of the drop.
All that said, I do use my phones all the time when I ride roller coasters because I love listening to music while I ride. Depending on the restraint type, I either keep my phone in my front pocket or I shove it in my pants right between my belt line and my crotch (LOL!). If it's an over the shoulder restraint then the front pocket will do, but for lap bar restraints the front pocket is a no go.
^Way too smart for me^

Thanks for the education and the suggestions milkshed- almost everyone else seemed to want to poke an eye out, but you have a little more patients.
I was trying to point out that doing activities, that differ from the norm,
may cause a challenge.
I still don't believe that Gorilla Glass lives up to what its supposed to do.
For those wondering about the integrity of the skin on my cheeks, no damage.

Aww, don't say that, I'm sure your level of intelligence is more than adequate .
I've been riding coasters for years. My curiosity/obsession started after watching National Lampoon's Vacation when I was a kid.
Folks get into coasters just as much as they do phones in these forums.

I hear ya. My girlfriend just had her Razr replaced after she dropped it while taking the Cleveland Browns to the Super Bowl.
According to her (I, thankfully was not around) the drop was not very high or hard, but the top half of the screen was shattered. I just takes the phone being dropped or pressured in the wrong way I guess. I never had a problem with my previous smart phones when they've been dropped. Maybe the Razr being so compact has something to do with it?
On the bright side, she received her replacement from Asurion a couple of days ago. We had asked the person we spoke to on the phone about having a brand new Razr shipped instead of a refurb. Thankfully when we opened the UPS box, inside was a brand spankin' new Droid Razr.
Hope your replacement phone turns out to be a new Razr as well!
I am really sorry for you...but just one thing, Gorilla Glass is scratch-proof, NOT ROLLERCOASTER proof...
If you sit on it whilst in a rollercoaster and expect it to be intact...you surely believe that Santa's for real too...
Nonetheless I like your warning...will make sure rollercoastering and Razr don't mix...
Man, I sure am glad I read this warning!
I was just finished duct-taping my RAZR to the bottom of my shoe, ready to go for a run and now I'm thinking... maybe I should change it so the screen isn't facing the ground
From Corning Gorilla Glass FAQ :
Can I break Gorilla Glass?
If subjected to enough abuse, Gorilla Glass can break. However, Gorilla Glass is better able to survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass to scratch, chip, or break.

One word: DUH!!!! Doing anything out of the norm other than talking/texting/net surfing can and more than likely crack or break any cell phone. And I don't believe gorilla glass was designed to be under any arse on a roller coaster no matter how big or small you are.

Protected out the box, right?

Question is that if this phone is already w Kevlar, gorilla glass and water resistant. Why the mere for cases and screen protectors
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Maybe.
It definitely depended who you are,for me it is protected out of the box,i use the simple silicon case i got with it,it does the job haha, still haven't dropped it to check tho.
I've heard horror stories of people cracking the screen from 20-30 cm fall. So I installed invisible shield today :=)

Phone went Swimming and Lived
While working on the side of the road, I dropped my Maxx into a water filled ditch without knowing it. I returned to the site 30 minutes later to find the phone face down on the bottom of the ditch. I pulled it out and much to my surprise my default notification sound chimed. When I got back to my apartment, I put the device (still powered on, screen working) in rice for a few hours and pulled it out and went to work with my fully working phone! I was severely surprise it worked near perfectly after the swim.
Now, a week later, I have concluded that the battery life is drastically reduced and that my power button does not function each individual time it is pressed. Insurance claim is in the works....but still, that's a pretty awesome story to tell about the phone surviving the plunge!
@jerseyff bummer, but good to know.

I get the case for looks and better grip. I was never a fan of super thin phones, too difficult to hold.
All I have to say is I got the phone a few days ago and all I was doign with it was loading backup from the couch. I may have put it in the pocket of my khaki's once but the pocket was empty. The next day I noticed there was a small hairline scratch right in the middle of the screen. Its barely noticeable but for someone like me its like nails on a chalkboard every time I look at my phone. Now I have to get a screen protector just to hide it.
I have zero faith in garilla glass's ability to prevent scratches on LCD screens. I can't for the life of me figure out what possibly have come in contact with the screen in order to cause the scratch. The link balls in my pocket must have some real teeth.

Broken glass

I broke the glass of my phone while in palm springs ( the screen and digitizer still works...). I want to get the cheapest replacement, but preferably without the huge-ass Verizon logo on the bezel. Can I use the xt910 screen on the xt912 RAZR?
Oh and the bezel needs to be white...
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
From what I've read you will need a new glass, digitizer and screen, which will be very expensive. You can't get these parts seperately.
Did you use anything to protect your phone? How did it happen?
I kind of hate it that all good phones use Gorilla Glass nowadays. My HTC Magic used plastic that wouldn't get scratched and wouldn't break. And I have dropped it. Often. On any sort of material, including down the stairs or onto asphalt. Without any protection.
It landed face down when I moved my towel, and I forgot that my phone was in the towel...yeah, I know bathroom texting is bad...
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
My first razr fell off my bed to the floor (3'-4'), and the glass cracked across the screen. It fell on its side, so I'm guessing being so thin and rigid creates a vulnerability on the edges. I was with in my 30 days and replaced it with the maxx, feels much sturdier, plus i ordered a soft case from new egg to give it some padding for the next fall.
They hyped up the durability of the phone so much, I'd think if you call for a warranty replacement with a little social hacking they may replace it for you. It'd be worth a try.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
horizontal drops (on the edges) will crack the LCD, even face down drops are slightly horizintal. this force cracks the LCD, I drops my Xoom, from my bed to the floor and its still fine!
So can anyone point me to where I can get a replacement screen? The glass is broken to the point that it might break off and stab my finger. Ideally without the ugly ass Verizon logo on the bezel.
And on top of that, I'm kinda tempted to see if Verizon will roll out the Galaxy S or the DROID 'fighter' anytime soon. I might just get one of those devices instead of fixing my screen.

Story of indestructibleness

So I was at the We Were Promised Jetpacks show in Boston this week. It was in a small cub, no seats just open standing room. Well the show was AWESOME and as they say in the UK It gets pretty “lively”. So I was right up by the stage and was jumping up and down and my Razr Maxx flew out of my hoddie pocket and went sliding across the floor, it ended up like 12 feet behind me on the floor. I think it might have gotten kicked too. So the girls behind me were able to get it for me.
Not a single scratch!! I cannot even tell which part hit the floor; there is not a single mark of any kind!! Pretty darned impressive if you ask me!
Cheers.
Really, I Have heard a lot of posts complaining about how fragile is the Razr, I'm a basketball coach and I choose this phone because of its toughness, your comment makes me feel happy.

This thing is a tank, I have dropped it numerously on concrete getting out of my car, no scratches. I went snowboarding one time and i was jamming to music, I finished my bindings and when I got going I forgot to zip the pocket my phone was in. It flew out and slid 10 ft through the snow and was completely buried. I picked it up, it was still playing and just kept going. No problems.
Knocked mine off my desk not even 3 feet and dented the bezel around the screen. Went and bought an otter box commuter series awesowe!!!

No I use no case of any kind. I have never used a case on any of my phones. I can't stand them.
I don't use any case on any of my phones. And I am a really bad user.
I dropped my razr numerous times, including from a moving car. I got some minor scratches on the edges and on the cheap acrylic camera cover, but the display is 100% clean.
My iPhone 4 screen broke entirely because it fell 2 feet.
And I had a SGS2 screen to die (stay off at all times, not phisically breaking) because it fell 2 feet also.
The old razr are the most resistant devices on the planet. I never seen one break.
If there is one thing that moto is good at is the mechanical design of their products.
mines in for repair at the moment. bent down to pick something up and it twisted in my pocket shattering the touch screen.
im not complaining, i've dropped it, sat on it and even thrown it and it's been great. it dosen't like been twisted, guess most phone don't.
im stuck with a crappy iphone till they fix it. i love my razr.

Sounds good. I've had a few drops, no case and no problems yet. I dislike cases as well. It has to do with how it lands tho, as has been noted many times from those users who had very short drops and ended up with shattered screens.
I commute via Ducati and have a lot of trouble obeying speed limits. I'm working on that.
I hit a pot hole while avoiding a chicken-brained driver cutting a curve into my lane. My phone popped out of its Ram Mount and slid (about 50MPH) under the oncoming car, across the road, and into a rock-lined ditch. With an inch of water in it.
(It never dawned on me until later that the music it was feeding to my helmet via bluetooth never stopped playing)
I turned around (still cussing), searched a bit, grabbed the phone, and wiped it off on my jeans. The $7 genuine plastic sleeve has a 2mm rubbed spot at the corner. That's all.
Yep, that's pure luck, but the GNex I traded for this Razr Maxx would have sprayed parts over a quarter mile.

I dropped my 6P on concrete & barely any damage

This phone is tough I don't know why people are claiming it is bending or breaking easily.
Last night I dropped my phone from face height onto concrete. A loud bang as it hit the ground and the Sim card came flying out. I assumed it was dead.
Picked up the phone and no broken glass anywhere. Not even a scratch.
Popped the sim back in and it is working fine.
Only two little chips in the paint job on one corner of the phone from that brutal drop. Posted pics of the little cosmetic damage on top right of phone.
Tested camera and no issues. Can't believe this huge screen and the camera glass survived a five+ foot drop onto concrete in the rain!
Sorry photo quality is lacking. I had to use my wife's iPhone to take the pics
mine folded in half then did a back spin and blew up into a million pieces, this was after a lighter was put to the screen accidentally just before i dropped it
On a serious note, good to see that it can withstand a bit of damage! I have mine in a case and a glass screen protector so hopefully im covered

For the same reason you just claimed it's tough. There's lucky, unlucky, and somewhere in between. One thing I've learned about the internet is no one likes the middle option. Either the phone is durable, or the phone is trash, but never the middle. Things are assumed based on one event on either side of the spectrum.
That's good to see actually but I'm still too worried to use it without a case. It looks like it was a corner drop too, those are the worst!

I've dropped mine three times so far.
Twice onto carpet and once onto floorboards probably from about two feet each time.
Haven't got a mark..
Not saying its indestructible but its definitely not delicate
So you're telling me you dropped you phone and it didn't shatter the gorilla glass, or bent in half as a result.
This will surely drive those people freaking out about the quality of the build nuts. Lol

All the cool kids keep the stickers on the phone. It's like the nerd equivalent of keeping the sticker on your baseball hat.
you are in good luck, i will put on a case as soon as i get mine
But interwebs sez fone desentigrates on contakt.
I think since the front glass is recessed a bit it would take a big drop directly on the glass to shatter. So basically you have to be unlucky
I dropped mine yesterday onto the kitchen floor from at least 4 feet, probably higher. No damage at all, not even a scratch. I have a case and screen protector on order, but they haven't arrived yet.
It seems like I drop every phone I get before I can get a case on it.

This happened to me once. I had a Nexus 5 and MotoX 2013. Was testing them to decide which I liked best. I was using the twist to launch feature showing off to some friends and the Moto slipped from my hands as I was saying something about how grippy it was. Little did I know, the case I ordered was delivered that day and was sitting in my mailbox. MotoX was fine just dinged on the corner.
Since then I've gotten all my cases before the phones arrived. My 6P. Hasn't been naked since I unboxed it. I just slide part of the case open when I sim swap lol

Are you sure your gorilla glass 4 on your visor didnt spontaneously break right after? I mean right after you dropped it but then decided to place it on the table. When you walked away you didnt hear it crack on its own?
