Broken glass - Motorola Droid RAZR

I broke the glass of my phone while in palm springs ( the screen and digitizer still works...). I want to get the cheapest replacement, but preferably without the huge-ass Verizon logo on the bezel. Can I use the xt910 screen on the xt912 RAZR?
Oh and the bezel needs to be white...

From what I've read you will need a new glass, digitizer and screen, which will be very expensive. You can't get these parts seperately.
Did you use anything to protect your phone? How did it happen?
I kind of hate it that all good phones use Gorilla Glass nowadays. My HTC Magic used plastic that wouldn't get scratched and wouldn't break. And I have dropped it. Often. On any sort of material, including down the stairs or onto asphalt. Without any protection.

It landed face down when I moved my towel, and I forgot that my phone was in the towel...yeah, I know bathroom texting is bad...

My first razr fell off my bed to the floor (3'-4'), and the glass cracked across the screen. It fell on its side, so I'm guessing being so thin and rigid creates a vulnerability on the edges. I was with in my 30 days and replaced it with the maxx, feels much sturdier, plus i ordered a soft case from new egg to give it some padding for the next fall.
They hyped up the durability of the phone so much, I'd think if you call for a warranty replacement with a little social hacking they may replace it for you. It'd be worth a try.

horizontal drops (on the edges) will crack the LCD, even face down drops are slightly horizintal. this force cracks the LCD, I drops my Xoom, from my bed to the floor and its still fine!

So can anyone point me to where I can get a replacement screen? The glass is broken to the point that it might break off and stab my finger. Ideally without the ugly ass Verizon logo on the bezel.
And on top of that, I'm kinda tempted to see if Verizon will roll out the Galaxy S or the DROID 'fighter' anytime soon. I might just get one of those devices instead of fixing my screen.

Check out this website. Good for repair guides and maybe parts too. At least maybe a good starting point to see what you're getting in to.

Protected out the box, right?

Question is that if this phone is already w Kevlar, gorilla glass and water resistant. Why the mere for cases and screen protectors
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Maybe.
It definitely depended who you are,for me it is protected out of the box,i use the simple silicon case i got with it,it does the job haha, still haven't dropped it to check tho.
I've heard horror stories of people cracking the screen from 20-30 cm fall. So I installed invisible shield today :=)
Better safe than sorry
Lol invisible shield won't help from a fall lol

I have case mate case. I do miss the kevlar feel. But I really would hate to mess this phone up.

Phone went Swimming and Lived
While working on the side of the road, I dropped my Maxx into a water filled ditch without knowing it. I returned to the site 30 minutes later to find the phone face down on the bottom of the ditch. I pulled it out and much to my surprise my default notification sound chimed. When I got back to my apartment, I put the device (still powered on, screen working) in rice for a few hours and pulled it out and went to work with my fully working phone! I was severely surprise it worked near perfectly after the swim.
Now, a week later, I have concluded that the battery life is drastically reduced and that my power button does not function each individual time it is pressed. Insurance claim is in the works....but still, that's a pretty awesome story to tell about the phone surviving the plunge!
@jerseyff bummer, but good to know.

I get the case for looks and better grip. I was never a fan of super thin phones, too difficult to hold.
All I have to say is I got the phone a few days ago and all I was doign with it was loading backup from the couch. I may have put it in the pocket of my khaki's once but the pocket was empty. The next day I noticed there was a small hairline scratch right in the middle of the screen. Its barely noticeable but for someone like me its like nails on a chalkboard every time I look at my phone. Now I have to get a screen protector just to hide it.
I have zero faith in garilla glass's ability to prevent scratches on LCD screens. I can't for the life of me figure out what possibly have come in contact with the screen in order to cause the scratch. The link balls in my pocket must have some real teeth.

How is your RAZR holding up?

Hello fellow RAZR owners,
Just asking how are your RAZRs holding in all aspects specifically cosmetic looks. Is it closer to when you unboxed or its currently something else all together?

I'm on my 2nd RAZR (CDMA). I ended up upgrading to a MAXX Limited Edition I found on eBay.
In my 5 months with this phone it has been dropped over 20+ times. 3 of which were directly on concrete parking surfaces. I've slammed it in my car door really hard 2 times not to mention the myriads of spills and splashes. It still runs like the day I bought it. Aside from a little knick here and there on the actual phone case it's still in like new condition.
Also, I do NOT use a screen protector. Personal preference.

Actually its morphed into a navigation system that Bluetooth syncs to my car for streaming radio and provides internet to my work Laptop. All while driving and not needing to be charged all day. Forgot to mention it also places and receives phone calls. Its not what i expected when i bought it, thought i had just bought a phone.

one tiny scratch . but great
Dropped it on concrete twice and have chips around the bezel works good as new though

dropped it multiple times from 3ft+, but only once or twice (or thrice?) on hard surface such as ceramic floors or concrete. the rest is either carpet or wood.
zero protection.
zero scratch on screen. corners of the plastic bezel (wherever its angled) however, start to show some gradation... its like a bit smudge. oh, and the Motorola metal strip on front top? some scratches there.
other than that, screen and back is rock solid.
I dropped mine once on carpet from chair height. No scratches. No protection but overly careful.
SHVR MAXX
Mine has some light scratches on the screen. They are only visible when it's off and I hold it at the right angle, but I thought it should be more scratch resistant. I'm pretty careful with the screen.
The back plastic has some scuffs where it rests on my desk, but nothing else.

Cracked the gorilla glass

Any had to replace theirs???
Any good sources just for the glass???
My lcd is fine

Im just looking for the digitizer..not the lcd and all that
Was hoping to find someone that has actually ordered the glass and gone thru the process

Youre better off replacing both at the same time. Most phones have some sort of adhesive holding the glass and the digitizer together.
If you ship it next day tomorrow 2 motorola it's like 179 and whatever you pay for shipping 4 to 5 days turn around. I now love my otter box. The other box is good because the silicone never slips never falls

Disassembly of an Amoded display and digitizer isn't an easy job as well as correct assembly, especially for thin displays like the one that XT910 sports. I suggest you to order full display assembly for the best practice. However, you can buy the digitizer itself from ebay. Prices are about 50-80 $ !
I have worked on cell phones for years!!
Heat gun works wonders
I will try the ebay stuff maybe try Motorola and see what tgey will do
Again was just hoping to find somebody that has actually bought one before
Thx again guys

I broke mine after dropping it face first on the floor, and got quoted £250 plus postage, only to find that the company had finally received the screen only to find that it would only display green. So I told them to recycle it, it wasn't worth fixing it to wait another 2 weeks after waiting a month for it.
So just be careful whether the actual screen works or not.
Are there any good, thick protective screens that do not hamper the touch performance?
It doesn't matter how thick the screen is, it's still gonna break...I broke my Gorrilla Glassed Defy so had to stop putting it in jugs of beer until fixed it which was a bugger...great old pub trick.
Broke mine a few months ago and have been looking for parts sources since. It seems that the digitizer goes for around 180 to 200 $. But sending it to the repair service here in France costs a bit less. Go figure.
Anyway I'm actually waiting to see a good price on a used phone and will probably buy one and keep my old/broken phone for (other) parts. Or sell it on ebay.

My screen cracked from a simple 1 foot fall onto my drive way.-. Gorilla glass fails honestly. It was a brand new one too, just got it a few weeks prior because my other wouldn't update to ICS.

My wife's Razr Gorilla glass broke from a 1m fall. When she went to pick it up she also cut her finger in the broken glass, something that is surely an engineering problem. You might expect the phone to brake, but not to injure yourself. I contacted Moto and they changed the LCD for no charge, at least.
A friend was using a s3 when he dropped it.. Around less than a meter as well, he's really short.. Facing up.. The glass broke. So much for gorila glass.. At leastsamsung repaired his phone for free..

Bigger displays are easier to break no matter what kind of glass. Its simple physics

You cannot replace the digitizer alone. The digitizer and LCD and fused together, just like on the iPhone 4 and 4S, and the Galaxy S, S II, and S III phones. You can use a heatgun all you want (I also work in a cell phone repair shop), but you will end up destroying the LCD in the process anyway. The screens are often sold separately so that you can buy them individually, in case you drop your phone again it will be cheaper to repair the second time.
Gorilla glass is for scratch protection, if you drop it, it will crack. There is no getting around that.

Scratched up the bezel

Well I have put some nasty scratches/chips into the bezel around my screen. To replace that it means the whole digitizer has to be replaced for about $200 -- no freakin way.
Other than putting a case on it, are there any methods to fix the gouges?
Disappointed in the fragility of this one versus my OG Droid that looked absolutely mint even after 2 1/2 years.
Unfortunatelly I scratched it too, so I'm interested of the method if it's replaceable.
I don't want to use case or something on it, because this phone looks so awsome without any stuffs.

as in the plastic housing around the screen right?
I found this that cost $6+

I thought the glass and screen are bonded to that? No way am I trying that.

Maxx screen shattered

I am reporting that as of 8 am this morning. My beloved maxx screen has been shattered. Used it 5 minutes earlier. Took it out of my purse and bam. Didn't drop it, nothing heavy in purse, no keys around the phone. Motorola should be ashamed for making such a weak product. I have owned 7 different smartphones, and done have fallen on concrete and never any damage. I might as well carry an egg in my purse it would probably hold up better. What a shame, I am so sad. Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
Spontaneous shattering??? yeah right!
Believe it or not yes. Nothing that traumatic happened to that phone in the minutes used it prior and it was fine. What ever might have happened was such a minor and light event that no phone should break over. Just be careful the maxx is not as strong as they make it out to be. As I said, I have owned many many smartphones that took a beating and nothing ever damaged the screen.

Pics or it didn't happen.
It has been reported a few times, so it's not that strange that there's a problem with certain devices screen.
I hope Motorola will recognize it and change your screen in warranty.
Any diamond rings in there or ceramic objects as their density could crack glass

Gotta be flawed glass, manufacturing defects happen. I've accidentally thrown this thing fifteen feet onto concrete and it was fine

Gorilla Glass is scratch proof, not shatter proof.
Hard=Brittle. Even diamonds shatter.

If you haven't already sent the phone for screen replacement, there's a cheaper and easier fix. Assuming that your phone was a XT912 Maxx, then just buy an XT912 non-Maxx off of Craigslist, then swap your back, chassis and battery to it. This is a 30 minute fix. You can buy a used XT912 non-Maxx for about $125 to $150 now.
BTW... I started a thread on this previously, which has a link to a helpful Youtub video. I've done it and lived to tell the tale. Don't be afraid of doing this yourself.

Do you even know what that means? Gorilla glass is dense so it is brittle but more scratch resistant.
My 1st screen I did drop it , if you send it in its about $240
But this one is solid, I beat this phone 2 death.

Otterbox kind of negates the slim size of the RAZR. Might as well carry around a brick from 1998.
