Verizon throttling and SQLite - Motorola Droid RAZR

Was browsing thru my SQLite editor today and saw something I hadn't noticed before, some values relating to throttling. As follows:
throttle polling sec. ---setting 600
throttle threshold in bytes----- setting 0
throttle value kbitsps------setting 300
throttle notification type------setting 2
I don't recall seeing this before, but in any case was wondering if someone with more knowledge about files would know if this has to do with
Verizons throttling my speeds and if it could be changed to prevent it.
I'm thinking the notification value of 2 could be changed to zero and no notification would be passed thru to them. But WTF do I know? I'm being throttled almost daily and at times brutally and this I DO KNOW. I have an unlimited and usually hit 4 to 5 GB/month. certainly not outrageous. IMHO.
I'm on GB if it makes a diff. Rooted of course.
TIA

How do you know you're being throttled and it's not just a random lowered speed? I've speedtested twice in a row and sometimes my speed has gone from 20/10 to 4/1 or less. It could be a random slowing down.

No real hard evidence of throttling I suppose, but speeds are really terrible sometimes and were really good prior to this whole throttling gig being announced. So a presumption on my part. In any case I've made a tweak to the throttling notification file just for kicks, see if I notice any diff.
In SQLite, go to 3rd settings icon and look in secure. It also shows a reset factor of 18 days.

My billing cycle starts on the 26th. My reset of 18 days must be something different then. I did change the one setting from 2 to 1 and then zero and I seem to be having better speeds or at
LEast more consistent. The 300 kbs setting has me wondering if that is some sort of threshold because when I feel throttling kick in I would never go over that number and usually it was way less. Maybe I'll change it to 1000 and see what happens LOL!
TBH , I think a lot of us are being throttled and just blaming an over crowed network, which kind of makes sense, but I used to be able to stream movies on Hulu with no buffering and in 3G speed with no problem. Then when they announced throttling would be happening to the so-called "heavy" users of anything over 2GB(what a joke) I then noticed a drop in speeds as soon as I hit 2GB and it's been that way ever since.
Using SQLite to hack the hotspot was a joy to have that over Verizon, but if this helps my speeds then all the nicer. It does seem to be helping, so I'm going to keep tweaking and see.
I wish someone who knew for sure one way or the other would chime in, but then don't want my bubble burst anyway
Be even better when LTE comes to the hood.

Using SQLite go to settings storage , the one below the other settings storage, then click and find secure. It's in there, hard to miss.
I tried some different tweaks and have settled on changing the notification type from 2 to 0.
I also have the throttle value in kbps changed from 300 to 200. This seems to be working well for me as of today. Let me know how it goes.
My speed seems better over all, but even better is the data drops on 3G seem much less. I don't have LTE here.

Just found that my settings storage secure only has one option, throttle reset days! Its set at 13. I don't have the OTA, I'm on the fast boot version. There must be some slight differences. Even the hotspots hack is on a different line. What the heck!

Actually my wife is on ICS also, but she's on the OTA files. She's never fast booted. So fasboot files must be different than OTA. Not sure why, unless they're trying to "patch" the throttle "hack". Who knows.

When i'm getting throttled down, i have to restart my phone to get back into high speed.
Have you guys experienced similar things?
Also once I fall down into 3G during tethering, i rarely go back up to 4G without resetting the radio

I have grandfather unlimited and i can't say i've been throttled.
16.5gb so far.

Those settings may apply to 3G only but not sure. I thought that 3G was actually throttled at some point but 4G was not. What that point is I have no idea.
Of course this is all speculation at this point.

EVDO Rev. A indicator

Hey guys,
After a couple days of playing around with tapres.96.dll and monochrome bitmaps, I was successfully able to modify the EVDO indicator using the 3.2.6 kitchen.
If you would like to use it, here's what you do:
1. Replace the SYS\Redist_DPI_96\tapres.96.dll folder with the one provided in the zip.
2. Run BuildNB.bat and cook your rom like you normally would and flash.
Here's a screenshot for all you people who like pics...

Right...it's just for aesthetics. However, Verizon has completely rolled out Rev A on their entire network, so for Verizon users they actually are always getting Rev A as long as they are in an EVDO area.

Also, as far as the data counters, don't you use Resco File Explorer (I thought everyone did) - it has this functionality on the today screen. I'm curious as to your choice etc.

It's a battery meter. I don't need it to be configurable, just more ram being eaten up by more today plugins. Vistahide is my preferred choice.

Yes I use Resco, and no I don't use the today plugin. See my reason above. The battery status data counter is nice and sleek, doesn't take up a lot of real estate on the today screen, and gets the job done. I just think the battery meter is inferior to Vistahide.

I didn't know this. So should I be disappointed that my speeds haven't changed much since flashing to one of dcd's roms? I always have EVDO coverage...but never more than 800kbps or so, tops.
Your speeds rely on how many T1's are on your tower. 800 is actually not that bad either. The upload speed is usually the dead giveaway that Rev A is there. What's your upload speed?

I got 680 down, 161 up when I'm tethered. I'm guessing it's an infrastructure thing, from what you described....I'm in a somewhat rural area.

3G Watchdog usage counter accuracy?

I've been using 3G Watchdog app for a few weeks now and compared to checking on wireless.att.com or from dialing #3282*, the app has been measuring much less than AT&T.
The deviation appears to be a couple MB per day, each time I compare I update the app counter. Just now I checked again to see that AT&T has counted 26.9MB to 3G Watchdog's 22.01MB. That's a 4.89MB difference in 37 hours. At that rate, within a month AT&T would have counted 100MB more than the app. With a 200MB data plan, such a difference makes the app unusable.
How has the app been for you guys? Is there another more accurate app?
Read this it has some information you may want.
Interesting. I disabled mobile data access on the phone and will see if AT&T still counts stuff somehow. It's currently at 29MB.
Does anyone else use a data counter app though? What are your experiences?
AT&T's count didn't increase for the 24 hours I had data disabled so at least they're honest to that degree.
Mine has been accurate for the half month I've used it. At a little over 1gb now, there was a slight discrepancy as I reinstalled the app at some point and had to manually add back the data used and estimated the count (didn't know about the AT&T text check at the time). I had input about 100mb extra actually.
Are you using the paid version of 3G Watchdog?
Nope, still using the free. Probably will upgrade to paid though, just to support dev and to see the few little bonus features (data by app is a nice sounding one)
i know for sure AT&T is off. by alot actually. and i know this by text messages.
whne i was on thier 1500 text plan. i knew that for sure i had gone over my limit and the text would say that i had 893 text which was not true.
Sorry to bring up a semi-old post. However I did not see any other posts relating to this app.
I would just like to share my recent experience;
After installing, it started to record my data usage perfectly, as I would browse/download apps it would increase my data usage by a near identical amount that Bell had charged me for. However just recently (last night) I realized it wasn't recording a fairly significant amount of data.
I went for a one hour bike ride last night whilst using a music streaming app; SKYfm radio. This app conveniently records how much data I use, it stated that after the one hour I had streamed about 30mb worth of data... 3G watchdog however did not pick up on a single kb of that data; unsure why (no I was not on wifi biking around - it was 3G)
I just thought I would mention this because you may be getting false readings (don't know how many other apps may use data that this app will not pick up on)
30mb will add up, if I go for a bike ride every day that's 900mb (30 day month) that is not recorded.
Maybe it was a one time fluke? I will be going for another bike ride later tonight so I will know for sure!
Cheers
You can use several data usage recording apps at the same time, and they will all record different data usage. Not from what I have seen on my phone to be huge differences, but numbering in the 10-50MB range.
I have no idea what AT&T is doing, but my home internet is with Comcast. I saw 5GB usage on the 1st day of one month when I had been at work all day. I do have a secure network before you ask. I called them and *****ed them out, as I do come close to the 250GB max they impose per month, and if you break 250GB they shut you off for a year. I had noticed increased usage over several months because I monitor traffic but couldn't pinpoint it. I had never seen this on the 1st of a month when data usage resets to zero. They had no explanation but to blame the 3rd party company who record data usage, but my data usage has been 100% correct as recorded through my router since this time, and has also been 50-60GB less per month on average with the same activity.
Really makes me wonder exactly how AT&T bill data usage and question the accuracy of their system. I doubt Comcast is the only "isp" who are not billing correctly/recording data usage accurately.
On the bell network watchdog gives me usage hundreds of mb over the bell self serve app. Can't seen to figure it out.

imo, the Atrix is what makes the 200mb plan unusable. Even with 3Gwatchdog Pro and DroidWall I was coming sooooo close to my 200 limit.. I had previously used the 200mb on my Captivate for 6 months w/o coming close to my limit. Sure I could use APNdroid to cut all data off, but then I might as well have a GoPhone. After playing with settings and apps, constantly checking my usage and even a couple calls to Att.. I decided for -$3/week difference it was a no brainer to get the 2gb plan and be able to use my phone/data anytime I want.

You could try Opera Mini with the image quality set to low. Its how I get by on it.
For me, I've found that AT&T is about 200kb above whatever I actually use. I consider myself lucky to not have the issue as badly as most people seem to.
Here is some images of my usage, about half way through the billing month now. Att shows higher usage than 3gW:

I've compared the two at various instances throughout the month using the AT&T data text check thing, and it appears that the reading fluctuates between being too high and too low on different cycles, but it generally is very close. (never more than ~50mb off)
Mine are always off by a MB or 2 a day.

Sorry...it's the title of the thread.
Mine was actually a little bit slower after applying the tweak. went from 4200kbps to 4000kbps, but the ping time went from 220ms to 170ms.
only one test on my phone though, so can't come to any significant conclusions
I tried it at a friend's house and my speeds went from 1.27Mbps immediately down to 0.21Mbps and 0.81Mbps. I tried a few different settings, none got it back to 1.3Mbps, so I uninstalled the tweak and the app.
Just tried it at home right now and scored a 5.2Mbps down, 1.80 up which is just about the fastest speed I've ever had at my house. Usually I'm around 2-3Mbps, but never higher than 5Mbps. Just looked my result history and 4.8Mbps was my fastest here in town.
Ran the test again 5 minutes later and puled in a 5.6Mbps down, 2.35Mbps up! I have never seen speeds that high in both categories.
I'm going to try testing a few things tomorrow, but these are promising initial results.

Interesting....did you turn it on to the fastest mode? Interesting result to say the least. It really has just about doubled my download speed.
Thread moved to Themes and Apps...
Just ran another test using root metrics and scored 7Mbps down. These numbers are ridiculous. Looking forward to more testing tomorrow.
I'm curious if these are build.prop tweaks. There is one way to find out... TO THE CLOUD. I mean time to backup my build.prop and do some comparisons. I am also wondering if this will break my v6.
The faster the speed, the moar battery drain.
Download tweak threw this into my build.prop:
Normal:
HTML:
ro.ril.hsxpa=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=10
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=10
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
The rest of the tweaks just change 3 of them.
ro.ril.hsxpa=
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=
ro.ril.hsupa.category=
Upload just changes ro.ril.hsxpa=
Anyone else giving this a go? I'm still having great results.
Good catch cwc3. I'm checking mine and all the build.prob tweaks were gone when my speeds were really high, so I think it was a placebo effect for the most part.
Being the tinkerer that I am, I tried the tweak again last night and it dropped back down to under 2Mbps download. Still faster than before running the tweaks though.
This morning, I reinstalled and retried the "FAST" tweak. It went up around 3Mbps.
I uninstalled the tweaks and it's back around 2Mbps.
I'm going to stay without the app tweaks for now. I am just going to experiment with modifying build.prob and saving the changes.

I really wish that I knew what you are talking about. Are the changes that it makes a bad thing? I really don't think that it's a placebo effect. It really is much faster. I guess I need an explanation for me to understand.
The reason I say placebo effect is because in my case I uninstalled the tweaks (removed the added lines from my build.prop file), restarted the phone, uninstalled the app, and then ran the speed test when I got my extremely fast speed test results.
That is, of course, unless the app is modifying something else.
I'm going to do some more digging when I finish helping my friend move into her new apartment.
Tries this myself and overall my speed performance went up. Not double like some but almost a full 1 mbps. From about 1.5 to 2.5. On a hell raised Rom though. Some of you guys getting like 5 what Rom are you using? People doing this test maybe put what Rom your using along with the speed increase numbers.

Average Download Speed is now ranging from 3.5mbps Minimum to 6.5mbps Max which is much higher than normal.
I will test this later with different Modems too....
I have a highly tweaked build.prop file, so the app thought that tweaks were already applied. The fast profile only changed 2 values in the file to values I had previously tested and had no luck with.
When I initially did a speed test, my upload went up from 0.9 to 1.6, and my download from 0.5 to 3 (I live in an area with hardly any cell towers nearby...it's like they're banned in the neighborhood).
I then uninstalled the app without removing the tweaks or rebooting, and my speed dropped. I wonder what else the app does, and if it's manipulating anything while being installed. I mean, if this app only modifies the build.prop file, theoretically it should no longer be needed once tweaks are applied.
I think maybe the tweaks caught the at&t network off-guard which gives the initial speed boost, but then the network eventually catches on and puts us back in our place. Actually, some threads even suggest that having the setting too high might eventually cause the network too slow your down below factory speeds. Hmmm

Did your signal level seem to go up as well with the Mod/app? Mine did. Needless to say, I'm a bit confused.

I used to get around 5 to 6. Forgot to mention Im in hell raised hyperdroid. Kk6 modem with latest siyah. Now Im lucky to get 2. With this app Im getting more consistent 2.3 to 2.8. Upload went down just slightly but that's fine cause id rather have faster download. Im in a decent size city too.

Interesting app.. Inside home I barerly get 300kbps. With 1 signal bar, and with this app is at 2 bars, sometimes 3 and speed is around 1700kbps.

[Warning] Speed Test Eats Data

Sooo Lte came to my city around midnight on the 1st... coincidental that was when my monthly plan starts over. So I was running speed test showing like 57Mb/s I ran it about 6 times out of excitement ... huge mistake it used a little over 100MB of my data plan between showing DL and UL speeds smh. You don't notice the small amount of data its consuming when its only running 3.4Mb/s for 5 seconds each time but 57 is a huge diff. Just be forewarned lol. That's valuable data I could have saved. So I won't be doing much speed test bragging to my friends lol.

Speed tests don't use "small amount of data...running 3.4Mb/s." Speed test should use roughly the same amount of data regardless of connection speed. It should just be uploading and downloading files of known sizes and timing them to tell you the speeds.
just ran one test on wifi, and looks to use a bit over 17MB. If I recall others have stated similar, around 20MB per run. 17x6=102, so yeah, about right. Not based on connection speed at all, fairly consistent usage.

The amount of data remains the same, just the time to make the transfer changes. LOL

I believe the amount of data used for the tests are scaled. If it isn't, then imagine trying to download and upload 20mb on edge, it would take forever to complete an actual test. By the same token, for faster connections, a larger amount of data is needed to accurately determine the speeds.

counter inaccuracy? use traffic monitor or the on board data usage meter in ICS and you will see about 40MB per test. I think that is what it is... I know 20MB DS for sure, upstream may only be 10MB.
The problem with LTE is speeds are so fast you can run multiple tests and before you know it use 1GB...
I work for at&t and was threatened with throttling once so I no longer test the network on my personal equipment per say. If I fiund an issue on my personal equipment, then I re-test for it on my company issued equipment and then report it... LOL

That would make sense if they auto detected connection type, and maybe they do change data amounts for 3g and lower speeds.
Here are two tests I ran, one on wifi showing 17MB, one on LTE showing 20MB. Probably a bit of error from finding servers etc, but seems to be about 20 total MB per test, and I've read others say the same.

I think he never noticed it cuz really, why the fk would anyone need to run 6 speed tests in a row no matter the connection speed. I doubt OP ever really did that before LTE and then checked data usage right after to notice it.

This is absolutely the case. In fact, I remember the older versions used to ask you what kind of connection you were on in order to run the appropriate test. If you selected "edge" while on wifi, it would give you wildly inaccurate results because the sample size wasn't large enough to get a useful average.
Got to love those 1080p re-encodes.

From their website https://support.speedtest.net/entri...test-itself-work-how-is-the-result-calculated guess we could run it on a few 3g, hspa+ or whatever and see about how much data it uses then.

HTC EVO LTE 3g hack. let me know if it works for you.

Ok so I did this and it helped streaming a little bit.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632687
Then I tried something else that doubled my internet speed it may not work on non sense Roms, but you can try it.
Open your dial pad, type in *#*#4636#*#*
Edit:tap on phone information,
then go towards the bottom of the page. Tap on "set preferred network type" then select CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto, then your 3g should turn off then back on. Next go towards the very bottom of the screen and there is a button that says toggle dns I believe. (Sorry, I'm on my phone so I can't check) hit that so it says 0.0.0.0 allowed. Then all you have to do is tap your home key and it'll save by itself. I have noticed that this won't stay there if you restart your phone, but once you get used to it it's pretty quick to set. I don't reboot every five minutes so it doesn't bother me. It's a small price to pay for fast internet!. My internet speed used to be about 200-300 download, now I see up to 2200Kb download.
IF THIS HELPS YOU OUT PLEASE HIT THE THANKS BUTTON!! THANKS!

Have you tried making call, receiving calls, send text or mms? I believe there was a thread like this when the Evo 1st came out but it turned out that the trick killed some things that made a phone a phone.

It kills some if you pick the wrong one. figured that out right away. Pick specifically the one I listed and you should be fine. I've been running like this for about 2-3 weeks. By the way I'm on ota, dev unlocked, rooted, on viper Rom, and awesome sauce kernel.
Sorry, to answer your question...I do send and receive text and picture mail, send and receive calls (regular number and Google voice number). Now I just have really fast internet.
have you also checked if you're not roaming without knowing?
nonetheless, thanks for posting!
Like I posted in the other thread.....
One test is not definitive.
Do 3-4 with it off, 3-4 with it on, and a couple with it off
Results page from speedtest will report multiple scores.

No roaming, I actually just looked yesterday on Sprint.com and nothing like that. I've been running like this for at least two weeks
This is in response to Rxprt. I have. Every day all day, truthfully, it's fast until I reboot my phone then gets slow again. then I change the setting and it doubles as soon as 3g connects.

That sounds like that menu that you go to to mess up your phone from roaming on the 850 band.
It's all a myth to me. If I can get 2500 on a rural tower but go to another and get poor speeds then nothing I do to my phone is going to change that except for roaming of course or maybe toggling in hopes to get on another carrier if the tower has more than one active and it's the air interface congested not the backhaul.
Sent from my C64 w/Epyx FastLoad cartridge
Though changing this could in theory improve speeds in specific scenarios, its unlikely (and proven when I did a similar test on androidforums.com) that the masses will gain little if anything from these changes.
What we have confirmed is that if you are experiencing slow speeds, the cdma only setting can drastically improve them. The LTE cdma evdo setting is trying to (in some areas) connect to the enhanced cdma technology that is not yet available in most areas, thus the phone ends up on evdo or 1x speeds.
Problem is, the average user has no way of accessing the tower information to even know what areas are complete, in progress, or not effected. Thus results will vary for literally everyone.
And as mentioned, some changes there will result in loss of voice, data, text and or mms

Okay, sorry didn't reply for little bit I had to power wash the parking. :-\ Anyways, the first four were done after the MOD and the bottom four were done before the mod (holding down the power button for 10 seconds and letting the phone restart at factory settings). It definitely works for me, but like it was posted earlier it may not work for everybody.
