3G Watchdog usage counter accuracy? - Atrix 4G Themes and Apps

I've been using 3G Watchdog app for a few weeks now and compared to checking on wireless.att.com or from dialing #3282*, the app has been measuring much less than AT&T.
The deviation appears to be a couple MB per day, each time I compare I update the app counter. Just now I checked again to see that AT&T has counted 26.9MB to 3G Watchdog's 22.01MB. That's a 4.89MB difference in 37 hours. At that rate, within a month AT&T would have counted 100MB more than the app. With a 200MB data plan, such a difference makes the app unusable.
How has the app been for you guys? Is there another more accurate app?

Read this it has some information you may want.

Interesting. I disabled mobile data access on the phone and will see if AT&T still counts stuff somehow. It's currently at 29MB.
Does anyone else use a data counter app though? What are your experiences?

AT&T's count didn't increase for the 24 hours I had data disabled so at least they're honest to that degree.

Mine has been accurate for the half month I've used it. At a little over 1gb now, there was a slight discrepancy as I reinstalled the app at some point and had to manually add back the data used and estimated the count (didn't know about the AT&T text check at the time). I had input about 100mb extra actually.

Are you using the paid version of 3G Watchdog?

Nope, still using the free. Probably will upgrade to paid though, just to support dev and to see the few little bonus features (data by app is a nice sounding one)

i know for sure AT&T is off. by alot actually. and i know this by text messages.
whne i was on thier 1500 text plan. i knew that for sure i had gone over my limit and the text would say that i had 893 text which was not true.

Sorry to bring up a semi-old post. However I did not see any other posts relating to this app.
I would just like to share my recent experience;
After installing, it started to record my data usage perfectly, as I would browse/download apps it would increase my data usage by a near identical amount that Bell had charged me for. However just recently (last night) I realized it wasn't recording a fairly significant amount of data.
I went for a one hour bike ride last night whilst using a music streaming app; SKYfm radio. This app conveniently records how much data I use, it stated that after the one hour I had streamed about 30mb worth of data... 3G watchdog however did not pick up on a single kb of that data; unsure why (no I was not on wifi biking around - it was 3G)
I just thought I would mention this because you may be getting false readings (don't know how many other apps may use data that this app will not pick up on)
30mb will add up, if I go for a bike ride every day that's 900mb (30 day month) that is not recorded.
Maybe it was a one time fluke? I will be going for another bike ride later tonight so I will know for sure!
Cheers

You can use several data usage recording apps at the same time, and they will all record different data usage. Not from what I have seen on my phone to be huge differences, but numbering in the 10-50MB range.
I have no idea what AT&T is doing, but my home internet is with Comcast. I saw 5GB usage on the 1st day of one month when I had been at work all day. I do have a secure network before you ask. I called them and *****ed them out, as I do come close to the 250GB max they impose per month, and if you break 250GB they shut you off for a year. I had noticed increased usage over several months because I monitor traffic but couldn't pinpoint it. I had never seen this on the 1st of a month when data usage resets to zero. They had no explanation but to blame the 3rd party company who record data usage, but my data usage has been 100% correct as recorded through my router since this time, and has also been 50-60GB less per month on average with the same activity.
Really makes me wonder exactly how AT&T bill data usage and question the accuracy of their system. I doubt Comcast is the only "isp" who are not billing correctly/recording data usage accurately.

On the bell network watchdog gives me usage hundreds of mb over the bell self serve app. Can't seen to figure it out.

imo, the Atrix is what makes the 200mb plan unusable. Even with 3Gwatchdog Pro and DroidWall I was coming sooooo close to my 200 limit.. I had previously used the 200mb on my Captivate for 6 months w/o coming close to my limit. Sure I could use APNdroid to cut all data off, but then I might as well have a GoPhone. After playing with settings and apps, constantly checking my usage and even a couple calls to Att.. I decided for -$3/week difference it was a no brainer to get the 2gb plan and be able to use my phone/data anytime I want.

You could try Opera Mini with the image quality set to low. Its how I get by on it.
For me, I've found that AT&T is about 200kb above whatever I actually use. I consider myself lucky to not have the issue as badly as most people seem to.

Here is some images of my usage, about half way through the billing month now. Att shows higher usage than 3gW:

I've compared the two at various instances throughout the month using the AT&T data text check thing, and it appears that the reading fluctuates between being too high and too low on different cycles, but it generally is very close. (never more than ~50mb off)

Mine are always off by a MB or 2 a day.

If you are on a 200MB plan, that 50MB = 25% of your monthly usage allowance!

im surprised with all that on your today screen, that you don't have 90% or so of your RAM used up..
No battery issues even with GPS on? wow..
I have a titan too, I like to keep things simple
Mobile Shell and some other apps, most probably 10 but no more
surprisingly enough, my Today screen isn't all that taxing on my RAM. the only thing that i wish could a be a little smoother is my SMS. if i have 6 or 7 texts coming through at the same time it gets really bogged down and i get so frustrated. Currently, with everything running, i have about 17 mb of free ram. Not an ideal level, but everything runs as smoothly as if i boot in safe mode. I just started using BT, and i thought that it would kill my battery because of everything else that I'm running, there was actually no noticeable change at all in my battery life. with BT running all day and 100% brightness, my phone went 12 hours and dropped 80%. battery life is probably a little relative, but being able to go around 15hours with no power save options before my battery drains is pretty damn good in my book.

I love my xv6800 too. It's the best phone on Verizon by far.
Obviously, most of us wish the Tilt or some equal variant was available...but whatever, we gotta deal with being the bastard child of CDMA carriers who always get the shaft by phone developers.
true that...
Verizon is a /win for service but a /suck for phone selection and UPDATE availability. I swear they could give 2 ****s about their PDA community. I would love to switch over to the Sprint but service is horrid here in central ohio... Would be nice to get that cheap $30/month plan too but what's the point if you get 0 bars?
I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune when the Diamond is available from Sprint or something first. Verizon will just be realizing a new phone was released in about 2010 when it's already obsolete.
Oh sorry.. didn't mean to derail your thread with Verizon rants

[Warning] Speed Test Eats Data

Sooo Lte came to my city around midnight on the 1st... coincidental that was when my monthly plan starts over. So I was running speed test showing like 57Mb/s I ran it about 6 times out of excitement ... huge mistake it used a little over 100MB of my data plan between showing DL and UL speeds smh. You don't notice the small amount of data its consuming when its only running 3.4Mb/s for 5 seconds each time but 57 is a huge diff. Just be forewarned lol. That's valuable data I could have saved. So I won't be doing much speed test bragging to my friends lol.

Speed tests don't use "small amount of data...running 3.4Mb/s." Speed test should use roughly the same amount of data regardless of connection speed. It should just be uploading and downloading files of known sizes and timing them to tell you the speeds.
just ran one test on wifi, and looks to use a bit over 17MB. If I recall others have stated similar, around 20MB per run. 17x6=102, so yeah, about right. Not based on connection speed at all, fairly consistent usage.

I believe the amount of data used for the tests are scaled. If it isn't, then imagine trying to download and upload 20mb on edge, it would take forever to complete an actual test. By the same token, for faster connections, a larger amount of data is needed to accurately determine the speeds.

counter inaccuracy? use traffic monitor or the on board data usage meter in ICS and you will see about 40MB per test. I think that is what it is... I know 20MB DS for sure, upstream may only be 10MB.
The problem with LTE is speeds are so fast you can run multiple tests and before you know it use 1GB...
I work for at&t and was threatened with throttling once so I no longer test the network on my personal equipment per say. If I fiund an issue on my personal equipment, then I re-test for it on my company issued equipment and then report it... LOL

That would make sense if they auto detected connection type, and maybe they do change data amounts for 3g and lower speeds.
Here are two tests I ran, one on wifi showing 17MB, one on LTE showing 20MB. Probably a bit of error from finding servers etc, but seems to be about 20 total MB per test, and I've read others say the same.

I think he never noticed it cuz really, why the fk would anyone need to run 6 speed tests in a row no matter the connection speed. I doubt OP ever really did that before LTE and then checked data usage right after to notice it.

This is absolutely the case. In fact, I remember the older versions used to ask you what kind of connection you were on in order to run the appropriate test. If you selected "edge" while on wifi, it would give you wildly inaccurate results because the sample size wasn't large enough to get a useful average.

From their website https://support.speedtest.net/entri...test-itself-work-how-is-the-result-calculated guess we could run it on a few 3g, hspa+ or whatever and see about how much data it uses then.

Optomizing Battery

Hi,
Lets start this first, Im Dumb. Plain and simple. I know there are a lot of threads about batteries but its mostly people whining about it. All im looking to know is am i getting the right amount compared to some of you guys? and am i set up to even know how my battery is doing.
Im on the UCLE5 Goldie rom (Love IT).
i had a 20 minute phone call and thats it hadnt really used it since this morning. Took it off the charger. 20 min phone call, and about 3.5 hours later im at like 83%. Is that sound about right to you guys? I have chargers at my desk and in my car so im never far from power. But i would love to know how im doing.
Lets say that its not up to par. What steps should i take to maybe find out whats causing a problem should there be one? I have always read that task killer programs are actually not that big of a deal on the android platform.. im not sure if thats true or not but i have tried to research and it seems to be a consensus around it.
Please let me know what ya all think and thank you for all your help and patience in reading a topic i am sure you are all very tired of.

I'm on Electron73's UCLF5 stock ROM with a few mods and that seems about right.
I've found task killing apps to actually HURT my battery life. The reason is, everytime they kill a task that autostarts, it starts right back up. This uses processor power and, therefore, battery.
I would recommend trying out Battery Monitor Widget on the Play store. It's by 3C. There is a free version and a pro version. I used the free version for about a month and then bought the pro version. It will give you some great insight as far as your battery life goes.

Alright, so, no, that sounds TERRIBLE going from full to 83% in 4 hours with only a 20 minute phone call.
Im on stock, unrooted and (having just tested), I go from 100 to 96% after a 20 minute call.
So, one of three things are happening here.
1. Your phone isnt deep sleeping
Solution: cpuspy. There are instructions for how to set it up and use it, since I have never used it, I cant help you here.
2. Radios (GPS, Cellular Data, Wifi, Bluetooth, NFC)
Manually turn them off or use a tool to automate this. There are a number of them out there, Juice Defender, AutomateIt, or my personal choice, Tasker (listed in order of ease of use but least features/functionality to most difficult to use but has most features/functionality).
Personally, I dont think your radios would be the problem, but nonetheless, they are something that if you can control their use, can save you some battery.
3. Rogue apps
This is absolutely the most tricky one to figure out.
Option 1: Start by installing Titanium Backup from the market and do a backup of all USER apps (copy the backups to your PC before proceeding!!). Then you should do is a factory reset (Settings->Privacy), then install cpuspy, battery monitor widget pro (by 3C), and Titanium Backup from the market and use Titanium to restore only the bare minimum apps you need on your phone to survive (in other words, install only what you need, NOT what you might need). Slowly add apps (again, that you actually use) and monitor the phone. I usually will add 5 at a time, if I notice a significant battery drain after adding five, its easier to determine the potential cause.
Option 2: Now, since the above is an absolute *****, another option that might appeal is a little app called Autostarts. Launch it and as soon as it is done loading, hit your menu button and look for an option to 'Group by Application'. It might also not be a bad idea to enable the 'Hide System Apps' option unless you know what you are doing'. Once you have done this, start at the top of the list and disable EVERY condition that an app has listed under it unless one of the following is true:
1. The app has a widget THAT YOU USE (if you dont use the widget portion, then this is not applicable).
2. The app has a scheduled task to perform under certain conditions or at certain times (ie. podcast client that updates your RSS feeds at a scheduled time, or Juice Defender which disables services, Dropbox which might sync your pictures if you have it configured this way).
Be aggressive WITH USER APPS. Even apps like Google Maps have absolutely NO REASON to be running in the background.
I would NOT touch system apps unless you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, I am not familar with ICS on the Note and what apps it considers a system app, I was very delicate with these, only disabling things like Gallery, Maps (on the Captivate, Maps was considered a system app), & Music.
4. Non-updated apps
Lastly, I cannot tell you how stupid people are about updating their apps. Obviosuly, it isnt applicable to everyone but to give you an idea, my sister handed me her phone and it had 47 app updates. Just last night, I looked at one of our company phones and it had 33 app updates and a system update.
Samsung is SUPER terrible about linking their apps to the market correctly. Launch Titanium Backup and hit the menu button, under settings and I think More, you will find an option to link apps to the market (it might be called market doctor, I havent used TB in a long time). This will make a number of stock apps show up under your list of installed apps when you open the market and allow you to easily hit the update all button without having to manually search for every app you have installed on your phone manually, one by one.
App updates are extremely important, often times, security vulnerabilities and performance improvements are made (this might include battery life improvements). There are a number of ways to have your apps automatically update if you dont want to manually do it (me personally, I like to know what changes came to each app).
I also don't think my phone's battery is up to par with most of you on this forum.
I just bought an i717 from Telus and recently got the battery replaced because i was getting about 2-3 hours (which was unbelievable). So i got this new battery and tested it out for the past 2 weeks and as i'm writing this post, i'm currently sitting at 12% with 12h 7m on battery with only 1h 45m 'screen on' time. Screen is at the top of the list with 32% and Web second with only 12m CPU total.
Any of this sound strange to you guys? I constantly find my phone overheating when the display is on. I even have my radios being controlled with Easy Battery Saver and checked for partial wakelocks with the audio output being at the top.
Could it be my battery or do i have a faulty display?
Ok this is what i have done so far...
All apps were up to date
I turned off bluetooth.. GPS.. and Wifi (I did have these on all the time) and only turn those on when i need then
i used cpuspy and you are right it spends all its time at 380 mhz never going into deep sleep.
how do i determine what is keeping it from deep sleep?
@HVZY- What is your display setting at? Are you running gingerbread? How long have you had the phone for?

You can download Better Battery Stats from xda. This app will tell you what is giving you a wake lock. Really handy in finding what is keeping the phone awake.

suspicious battery drain

I got an S3 a couple of weeks back.
I've noticed that the battery duration is subpar.
I haven't even rooted the device yet and it doesn't seem to be the same for everyone.
On the pic attached you can see that it has been a few hours since disconnected and it has already consumed almost half of the battery.
I wasn't doing much other than about 20 minutes of web surfing, 3 or 4 texts and about 15 of playing music for my car stereo through the aux. Other than that nothing, no pics, no calls, etc.
I'm on 3G (H,H+) all the time. Do you think that's the issue?

Depends. Please use the dialer code *#0011# (or *#*#0011#*#* on AOSP-based ROM's) and check if the RRC-state goes to "IDLE" when your phone has not transferred any data for some time and HSPA is active.
If not, your carrier probably does not disable Fast Dormancy or you have Fast Dormancy disabled for whatever reason.
Please, if rooted, let Better Battery Stats (free APK here in Xda) record the Wakelocks across several hours and make a screenshot of the Kernel wakelocks and Partial wakelocks.
All I can see from your current screenshot is that you're constantly discharging and probably are on an older firmware (Upgrade!) since it doesn't include the Fix for the cosmetic issue causing the Cell standby being battery drain Nr.1
Are you using Apps like Skype or Facebook? Both are known battery drainers.
Have you been in low-signal or no-signal areas?

Thanks a lot for the reply.
I'm in Mexico and we haven't had the update released here. That's why I haven't upgraded yet.
I'd love to go to CM9 but as it stands I don't want to take risks with the modem, the scene is kind of young still.
I'm not using skype or facebook. I do have them installed but I don't have them running. I actually have sync for FB disable.
I'm very willing to uninstall both if you think it will help.
About RRC-State:
If I'm on wifi it says iddel.
The phone seems to go to HSPA only when downloading something and stays on 3G while idle. While on 3G RCC State reads "FACH".
How can I enable fast dormancy?
By the way, since 12 am today, I have downloaded less than 7MB of data from my mobile network. Anything else has been over wifi.

Not that I noticed. It seems to have good coverage around here. I'm in a 5 million people city and I normally move around a lot due to my work. Seems to be fine in that regard.

If it doesn't go down to IDLE then fd is confirmed off or not working. However not all providers support it so it's not that easy.
You can try this, but do a backup of the corresponding files first and of course replace wherever required the values with your provider's:

You don't have to wait, just flash any Rom of your liking, including e.g. Omega ROM. You can flash the CSC back.

Try uninstalling or freezing them. It might help. Trial & error

The problem is, your phone keeps a full-fledged high-speed data connection open at all times since it or the network is unable to go to Fast Dormancy. Open 3G/HSPA connections drain the battery faster than you can look. Talk about carriers sucking you dry =)

The modem doesn't change when flashing CM9. You should flash the BFLB modem though since otherwise you get issues with voice calling.
Plus, you can always go back to stock by flashing your (or a close) firmware from samfirmware.com through Odin.
I highly recommend trying CM9 =)

Thanks a lot for the help. I don't think I have the data required for doing that mod for fast dormancy. Most likely that is the culprit then...
I was waiting to root and such because of the flash counter but I guess there is no point in waiting. The phone like this actually doesn't do much for me. It's a pain to be concerned about enough power and I totally need to have the data on all the time (critical work emails). I always carry a backup iPhone 4 in case I have problems with my main android but I rather just use Android all the time (it rocks!).
I guess I'm down for CM9. Just one more question, my firmware doesn't appear as it is on samfirmware. How can I find out which one is closer to the one I got right now?
Edit:
Actually I found it. It wasn't there before but it is now. It might be newer to what I got right now.
I rooted my device and made a nandroid.
Just for research, instead of putting a new ROM I'll try to do a bbs log of my phone as it is to try to find out the reason for the drain although it might very well be the carrier config.

Verizon throttling and SQLite

Was browsing thru my SQLite editor today and saw something I hadn't noticed before, some values relating to throttling. As follows:
throttle polling sec. ---setting 600
throttle threshold in bytes----- setting 0
throttle value kbitsps------setting 300
throttle notification type------setting 2
I don't recall seeing this before, but in any case was wondering if someone with more knowledge about files would know if this has to do with
Verizons throttling my speeds and if it could be changed to prevent it.
I'm thinking the notification value of 2 could be changed to zero and no notification would be passed thru to them. But WTF do I know? I'm being throttled almost daily and at times brutally and this I DO KNOW. I have an unlimited and usually hit 4 to 5 GB/month. certainly not outrageous. IMHO.
I'm on GB if it makes a diff. Rooted of course.
TIA

How do you know you're being throttled and it's not just a random lowered speed? I've speedtested twice in a row and sometimes my speed has gone from 20/10 to 4/1 or less. It could be a random slowing down.
No real hard evidence of throttling I suppose, but speeds are really terrible sometimes and were really good prior to this whole throttling gig being announced. So a presumption on my part. In any case I've made a tweak to the throttling notification file just for kicks, see if I notice any diff.
In SQLite, go to 3rd settings icon and look in secure. It also shows a reset factor of 18 days.
What day does your billing cycle starts? My showing reset 20 - that day my billing cycle starts

My billing cycle starts on the 26th. My reset of 18 days must be something different then. I did change the one setting from 2 to 1 and then zero and I seem to be having better speeds or at
LEast more consistent. The 300 kbs setting has me wondering if that is some sort of threshold because when I feel throttling kick in I would never go over that number and usually it was way less. Maybe I'll change it to 1000 and see what happens LOL!
TBH , I think a lot of us are being throttled and just blaming an over crowed network, which kind of makes sense, but I used to be able to stream movies on Hulu with no buffering and in 3G speed with no problem. Then when they announced throttling would be happening to the so-called "heavy" users of anything over 2GB(what a joke) I then noticed a drop in speeds as soon as I hit 2GB and it's been that way ever since.
Using SQLite to hack the hotspot was a joy to have that over Verizon, but if this helps my speeds then all the nicer. It does seem to be helping, so I'm going to keep tweaking and see.
I wish someone who knew for sure one way or the other would chime in, but then don't want my bubble burst anyway
Be even better when LTE comes to the hood.

Using SQLite go to settings storage , the one below the other settings storage, then click and find secure. It's in there, hard to miss.
I tried some different tweaks and have settled on changing the notification type from 2 to 0.
I also have the throttle value in kbps changed from 300 to 200. This seems to be working well for me as of today. Let me know how it goes.
My speed seems better over all, but even better is the data drops on 3G seem much less. I don't have LTE here.
Just found that my settings storage secure only has one option, throttle reset days! Its set at 13. I don't have the OTA, I'm on the fast boot version. There must be some slight differences. Even the hotspots hack is on a different line. What the heck!

Your on ICS then, that didn't even occur to me. I'm on GB. Must be a diff setup.

Actually my wife is on ICS also, but she's on the OTA files. She's never fast booted. So fasboot files must be different than OTA. Not sure why, unless they're trying to "patch" the throttle "hack". Who knows.

When i'm getting throttled down, i have to restart my phone to get back into high speed.
Have you guys experienced similar things?
Also once I fall down into 3G during tethering, i rarely go back up to 4G without resetting the radio
I have grandfather unlimited and i can't say i've been throttled.
16.5gb so far.

Those settings may apply to 3G only but not sure. I thought that 3G was actually throttled at some point but 4G was not. What that point is I have no idea.
Of course this is all speculation at this point.
