I've noticed that HTC apparently uses two or more manufacturers for the screen on this phone.
My friend recently bought the same phone, and I remember noticing that his screen looked great, but I figured it was just me being silly.

Haven't noticed that with my phones. My wife and I each got a launch day Evo, they looked the same. I had to replace mine due to a hardware problem a couple weeks ago and the screen looks exactly the same. You have the same 003 hardware version as everyone else has?
How can I check?

Chances are when you buy two of the same phones at the same time, you will get the same screen type/manufacturer/quality on both phones.
I bought two evo 4g lte phones at different times and the screens are some what different. Both are 003 hardware revisions.
I know on the Original EVO you could boot into the Boot loader and you could figure out what screen you had, however, I just looked and I couldn't tell. Maybe I just don't know what to look for. This was an issue with Original EVO as the demand grew greater HTC had to use a 2nd company for the Screens to keep up.

If you are rooted, go into Terminal, type su, then dmesg. E-mail that to yourself and search for [DISP]. You'll get a bunch of results, but just sift through. This is what i found out about my evo
[DISP] jet_lcd_on: PANEL type = PANEL_ID_JET_SONY_NT_C2
Ive got
[DISP] jet_lcd_off: PANEL type = PANEL_ID_JET_SONY_NT_C2
one says off and one says on, but I have this:
[DISP] jet_lcd_on: PANEL type = PANEL_ID_JET_AUO_NT_C3_1
my display has some light bleed and flickering sometimes, but looks good still.

I truly believe all of of the evo lte's exhibit this behavior. That is a great example where the flickering happens. Certain people are more sensitive to refresh rates than others which is why I think everybody doesn't notice it. I certainly see it on my device.

I think you're right on this. I get it to the point that it fatigues my eyes if I look at it for too long. I show my phone to 10 different people, only 6 or so can see it. I've been glued to a smart phone since the iPhone came out.....and since then I've had various iPhones and Android handsets. This is my favorite one thus far, but I can't use the damn thing for much because my eyes are more sensitive to this than most people.
Mine doesn't seem to flicker? It does however seem to be brighter and then go a little darker when the screen turns on. It that what you all mean?

No, it's a rapid flicker. Open the play store, and before everything loads it is a Grey background. That is where mine flickers.
Which screen do you have. I have the AOU. Maybe the Sony screen does not have this issue.

Hi
I have a problem that i can't find any existing threads on.
I just received my SGS2 and noticed right away when i turned it on that it had very poor viewing angles regarding color accuracy.
If i tilt it just a little back/forward or right/left, it shows a strong green/blue-ish tint on the screen.
My girlfriend also bought a SGS2 a week ago and her phone does not do this when i tilt it.
Is this normal behavior the first few days or is my screen broken?
I will make a video tonight that shows the problem.

It is NOT normal! I have tested mine against two other SGS2 now, both are less that 4 weeks old and none of them has this problem.
I think what you other guys are referring to is the blueish white that all the screens have. This is not what i'm talking about. My phone shows a really strong blue tint when you tilt it just a little in any direction. It is so strong that it is even clearly visible and disturbing in photos shown on the screen, making it impossible to sit several people and watch photos on the phone.
I cannot show any video or images of this problem as i have already sent it back.

Yes there is.. My girlfriends and my friends phone does not do this. I will take som photos to document this.
I have a feeling the problem lies with the glass screen or the coating.
I switch the screen off and tilt it, I get a bright daylight reflection on the screen, but I look at the glass and not the reflection. I then notice that the glass has got a blue hue to it.
Actually if I tilt it in other directions I can see pink colouration too lol.
Have others noticed this?
I better stop obsessing now or it will start to annoy me

I haven't tested this with the phone off. But i do know that the problem i describe has nothing to do with being obsessive. The first thing both my girlfriend and friend noticed was the strong blue tint which is completely non-existent on their devices.
I aswell notice the blue tinting when i tilt it abit, its easily noticable, but its nothing terrible, its just there.
would be interested in more parties opinions, seems as though only a select few so far dont have it, or cant notice it for some reason =)

Yes we need more data.
Maybe we should also define how much tilt we're talking about.
On my device only a few degrees, less than 7 degrees produced a strong blue-ish tint wich was easily observable and annoying to the point that you couldn't really sit several people beside each other and watch photos on it. My old SGS1 did not have this problem either at all.
Here's some vids of SGS2 devices which do NOT have this issue as reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK7M_RNQM7k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOxAh4I2jrk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvr_P0euqWc
The last video link is really good. It shows the screen from a lot of angles where none of them produces any blue tint. Look at 6:35 where he titlts it upwards and down again on the table. No tint. If i laid my phone on the table and filmed if from the same angle as he did, my screen would show a strong blue tint.
I don't usually imagine things, but I hope I am imagining this. Could everyone take a very close look at their screen and see if it seems that the display is slightly tilted to the right? Almost like it is slighty rotated... like by one or two pixels. It would be most noticeable (if you are afflicted) by looking very closely at the upper right corner of the status bar.
Are there any video screen testers to download that would give me a better perspective?
My actual LCD is tilted by 1-2 pixels to the right under the glass. Was the first thing I noticed when I turrned it on and looked at it deadon. Not enough to make me return it, but it's BARELY noticeable. Had the same issue with a refurbed OG Evo from Sprint when mine broke.
Then again, I have perfect vision and I pay attention to the smallest and dumbest details.
is your 3d/2d switch loose front to back?
j/w b/c mine is and it bugs the crap outa me. also noticed the screen seemed to be recessed a tad more in the top right. but thats me nit picking really.
I thought I was going insane when I noticed this, its barely noticeable but I knew something felt off, especially if I looked right at the top by the status bar like the OP said. .

I just recently bought a refurb S2 from ATT as an upgrade. I also just read up on how these screens quickly burn out and leave imprints from static images. So for you guys that have had this phone since launch, how bad is it? Is it even noticeable?
I saw this video and it looks pretty terrible : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdbTuMamqSA
Wow that's bad! Best way to protect yourself is to get a screenprotector...
Honestly, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Burn in is about the same on most display panels. You would have to leave you screen on permanently for extended periods of time to experience anything like what the host of that video is talking about. This is the first I've even heard of it and I've had the same gs2 since launch.

By the way, the i9100 forum has more topics on this if you want a reference.
i got my refurb from AT&T a little over a week and a half ago and my screen is pretty bad in low light conditions. i dunno if its screen burn in but there are noticeable blotches on the screen when dark images are shown. luckily you cant really see it during normal conditions.
The only devices I've ever seen with burn-in are store display units - which are kept with the screen on nearly all the time displaying the same damn thing.

The SG2 is especially bad about this since they usually don't play any "demo" on that model in the stores, the phone is kept on the home screen all hours of the day and night, or at least that's what the AT&T reps told me

I can vouch for amoled screens getting some burn in if you're not careful. My nexus one has a permanent mail box burned in from a text message reminder app that I used to use that would keep the screen awake with that static image. I'm sure all screens will do this though and I'm just more careful with this phone

The ICS launchers have caused burn in on my screen because of the app drawer launcher. You don't notice it unless you are on low light levels with a grey image though.

From my experience with screen starting with the Treos to HTC to Asus that this is hardware and not software. Sometimes screen manufacturer will use a different top panel if supply is short.
However there is an app called "Screen Adjuster" that will allow you to change RGB as well as contrast. I used this temporarily on my Asus Prime (home screen transition) til I finally got a Prime with a whiter less yellower screen. It may slow your phone down however as it slowed my Prime just a tad. The contrast is what'll slow it down by a lot so try not to use it.
I forget though but you may need to be rooted to use it.

Yes, its normal if your coming from a different phone like the s2.
Its probably sony made screen which is better! Most people prefer the yellowish tint than blue anyways!
I know this thread is old, but I figured it'd be better to bring it back up than to create a new thread about the same thing. I got my EVO one week ago and have noticed that I have this yellow tint on my display as well. From reading through other forums for various phones (iPhone, One X, etc.), many people say that this is due to an adhesive that hasn't fully cured and should go away with time. On my phone, the tint is the most pronounced towards the bottom of the phone. I'm not sure if it really will go away with time or not, and my 14 days will be up soon.
My main question is that for others who have noticed this yellow tint on their phones, has it really gone away over time? Or is it still there?
The strange thing I have noticed is that it is not my ENTIRE screen that seems to be warmer/yellow-tinted. The very very edges of the LCD on all four sides appear to be free of this yellow tint. For example, when I open the Settings menu, I can make out a slight warm/yellowish rectangle covering all of the LCD except for the very edges which appear to be pure white. I'm not sure what to do with my phone as far as whether I should keep it or try to get it replaced in hopes of getting one without this yellow tint.

Mine has had the yellow tint on the bottom of the screen since launch. It has not gone away.
I forgot to mention that even when using Screen Adjuster and boosting the blues or even the reds or greens just to experiment, the yellow is still visible. This leads me to believe that it is not an issue with the LCD but rather with something that is on top of the LCD.
Yah... It's not going to go away. But if you're like me, you will eventually stop noticing it. Had mine for two months and the tint at the bottom right is still there but I honestly had forgotten about it till I saw this post.

I received my new htc evo v 4g few days back, and unfortunately, I also have yellow tainted screen. I also have galaxy s2 and this is huge change for me.
Galaxy s2 is on white and bluish side. and this htc evo v is predominantly yellow. If i open google on both the background, supposed to be white, is strongly yellowish in htc. Also, if i use the app screen adjuster, i am able to fix it !
Now am at the fix shall I continue with it or go for a change. The problem is that replacement is huge hassle with virgin mobile. PLUS you have to pay shipping by urself as well.
What you guys did? getting used to yellow or replacement?
Ive never had a yellowish tint...

Does anyone notice faded icons on the status bar to the left? Primarily the email and text message notifications (that are more frequently seen in my case). When I don't have a text msg or unread email I can still see it, its faded. Reminds me of the older plasma screen tv's where you get a "burn- in" as you'd say.
Does not seem promising for a phone I've had for 5 months now
Anyone else notice this? The symbol stays, it does not go away.

OMG yes! I thought I was the only one that noticed this. I have always used black status bars since then though so its a non-issue now.
I have not noticed this, yet, thankfully.

I had the EXACT same problem with the Galaxy Nexus phone and it ends up it was a bad LCD. Had to have it replaced.
Not here. Had my phone 4 months now.
Ya I have noticed it. I've had this phone for a few weeks now and seen it the other day. It left a shadow of the update icons from the play store. They went away after the screen was off for awhile.

Have had my phone for about 2 months now and haven't notice anything of that sort. Hopefully it stays that way.
I get it too. I have a feeling that's why the screen tries to limit itself to 63%

I also have this. Have had my phone since mid-December.
At least it isn't me... too bad it is me and others though.
I first noticed a problem when I could see my status bar in TWRP...
Like said above, they go away, I just hope it doesn't get worse (would this be covered by LG? Because I have no insurance or anything else).
Its not screen burn in. Mine does it every once in a while. Its a software glitch. It goes away.

This sounds similar to what happens on the original Kindle Fire with its IPS screen (don't know if current models do it too). You could sometimes see ghost images in dark areas of the screen. It was not really burn-in, though it did tend to appear when you had a bright static image for a while, because it would go away. One thing of note was that the phenomenon varied a lot between units. I could occasionally see it lightly on mine, not enough to be significant, but for some people it was a bigger deal (Amazon replaced them under warranty).

I find it a little difficult to believe that it is software when I've seen it in TWRP too (saw my status bar in TWRP).
If it was software would it carry over to recovery?

Same here guys I get the same thing it can't be a defect if we all have it and I unlocked my bootloader after this happened so its not that I think its over use of the screen or a software glitch also when I look at a greyish area of the screen I see a line in the left side weird I also have a battery skippin isue as well
SOLVED!
I found a fix for the black line! I had the same thing and last night for half an hour I used the burn in tool off the market and forgot I had in usb debugging screen never time out so whenever I got a text the screen would be on for hours but anyways after useing the tool I let it sit over night for about 9 hours and boom! Its back to normal as for the status bar that just a software bug because there was nothing about it in the older ota update so it must be a bug right?
I don't get anything like what you guys are describing, but I do get a white ish fog surrounding my screen. It kind of comes and goes, but sometimes it gets really hard to see darker things in the screen.

I come from an amoled so I notice certain things involving color reproduction. The only experience I have ever had with an LCD other then this phone was an iPhone 4. After a while I noticed colors started looking cooler and a fog around the edges of my LCD. The other thing is sometimes the black status bar has white steaks (as if the light was bleeding thru.) I came to the conclusion that lcd were crappy compared to amoled but I ignored the fog till I read your comment I was thinking maybe I am picky with the color but no. There is an issue.
