Jumping ship, and cleaning that little crevasse between screen and edge... - Motorola Droid RAZR

Yeah the locked bootloader, and all these devs jumping ship has caused me to make the sad sad decision as well.
I remember using the OG I9000 Galaxy S and the simple joy of browsing up and down the XDA forums looking for a new fresh ROM to flash. Unfortunately I don't get the same joys with my RAZR and I think it's a bummer, considering it's an attractive and svelte device with good internals. (Also, it's Android. Why would you lock your bootloader if you don't agree with a "open" ecosystem. Damn you Motorola.)
I'm rocking the XT910 model GSM unlocked and I just have a few things to take care of beforehand.
The little crevasse between the edge of the phone and the screen is home to (in my case) some lint which is although minor, is really unattractive and downright annoying. It's the little part of the glass where it slopes down into a ridge. Has anybody cleaned this before? Would anybody suggest I use a toothbrush to brush out the little dust and lint?
Also, I'm no fan of the SIII (cheap plastic phones belong in Toys R Us, not Best Buy, also S Voice is a sham), and I'm not sure how happy I'd be using a dual core One X with the knowledge that there is a quad core version in Asia. If I do hold on to my phone until say, December, do you think I'd still be able to fetch ... say ... $300 used in excellent condition?
Thanks

I love my RAZR Maxx. I've had the OG Droid, OG Atrix, Bionic and Droid Charge - the RAZR Maxx is by far my favorite. Really, I bought it for the 3300mah battery and the notification LED, but I'm really starting to love my RAZR Maxx.
The Atrix and Bionic displays were kind of crappy, so I was a bit hesitant to get the RAZR Maxx, but I'm glad that I did. I guess they changed their displays to SAMOLED+?
The one thing I miss is the sweet Wolfson DAC in the Droid Charge.

Why do people feel the need to announce they are dropping the RAZR?
News flash: no one cares.

I do like to mess with this phone (locked bootloader is nothing) & give away stuff.

The locked bootloader sucks :/ I use Epsilon V4 as a ROM, and I just found out that the developer just sold his RAZR for an iPhone >_>
I figure if the developers are packing up, I've got little incentive to stay and wait for custom ROMS :/

But there's no more dev/ROM project to support BootMenu (AFAIK). That's my biggest concern...

[Q] X2 future proof?

I just got the X2 and it's been running fine for me. It seems with the Tegra 2, this phone would possibly be able to handle Android 4.0 whenever it comes out. With the lack of development, what are the chances that the X2 will just ride with GB until its death? I like so far how the phone is working well out of the box, but in 1-1.75 years when the phone shows its age, I would like to mod it here and there to get some more life out of it.
No phone is future proof. The Tegra3 is around the croner for tablets, and phones wont be that far behind. I would bet 4g phones get the Tegra3, so if 4g is a negative for a select crowd, the DX2 may be the last great 3g phone. It will be interesting to see if they continue supporting a high-end 3g line.
I would imagine ICS would run fine on OG DX much less DX2. I would say there is a small, but possible chance a stock DX2 would die on GB. But the dev will bring it regardless.
Edit: And at this point I am 100% satisfied with everything I have flashed on DX2. What did DX have? Liberty and Apex. And yes a good bit of themes. But the devs here have a ton of scripts I never saw on DX and the themes have been coming fast, and are of good quality. The eclipse ROM has branched to AOSP, so both crowds should be happy. I personally stuck with 2.2 and couldnt be happier.
Jrummy can choke on his Charge
That's good to hear. ICS seems like it's going to be a new experience and I would hate to miss out on it. I'm a "noob" and so I can't demand things and my understanding is limited, but the bootlock seems to be restricting development

The one thing everyone seems to forget though is how old this phone will be once this actually goes through. It takes a long time for the legal part of corporate acquisitions to go through. Google won't actually be having a say in moto for at least a year, if not longer. It wasn't really to have a hardware company anyways, it was a patent grab for protection. They have also said moto will remain a separate company and act as such, so...

The other part of the equation is the dev community. With active, dedicated developers, many good things can come our way. Most of the best stuff we had on the fascinate wasn't the result of anything specifically released for the vzw fascinate. Alot was adapted by our devs from releases for other galaxy s variants, but we benefited from it because of their efforts. That's why I think we need to treat them as the resource that they are. One of the best devs on the fascinate recently left xda because of all the drama & he wasn't the first. If you want more work to be done on this phone than you gotta do your part to lessen the crap, not make more.

You are right there. Samsung is more dev friendly with initial firmware features but from what I've gathered their code's a frustrating nightmare & updates are painfully slow. Plus the nonstandard file structure adds the necessity of conversion for any type of real performance kick. Nothing is perfect, that's for sure. I'm just thankful to have a phone that works like a phone first and a hobby second.
As far as the devs are concerned, nitro & naven did excellent work for the fascinate community & I've been really thankful to see them here, not to minimize any of the other contributors on this forum in any way. All of them do something I don't know how to & I get to benefit from it; that's win-win in my book. So, what can we do as participants & beneficiaries to make these guys want to stick around?

X2 purchase a mistake?

I bought an X2 a few weeks ago because it was available to me for $50 (yeah, I'm. Cheap). I really love it (except for the physical buttons (wtf?)) and I really wanted something larger than my Incredible. However after reading threads for a few weeks it just really seems the development for the X2 is being past over for older equipment (i.e. my Viewsonic G Tab?) & newer phones. Did I pick the wrong phone??
I'm not crazy techie, so I don't know the complexity, but the Droid, the Droid X & the Droid 2 have been cracked. Did Motorola really go to so much trouble making the X2 so different that it is much more difficult to crack or are the efforts to crack this phone being passed over for some reason? Do I just need to avoid Motorola phones in the future?
Like I said I'm not a very technical, but have contributed (donation-wise) to multiple ROMs I used on my Incredible & gTab & I just thought I would see similar flexibility on the X2 by now, so I just want to know if I need move on from the X2 or not?
The 512mb of RAM is what made me leave this phone. It requires too many hacks/scripts to even run properly.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Yeah, I don't really run that much and I regularly see only about 3-9MB avail. ;(
I'm starting to think this is a middle of the road phone that I should have just past by & it seems the developers think so as well. Guess I should have researched more, not been so cheap & been less impatient.
Well I'm cheap, so I'll need to wait for better pricing on the latest phones, but if Motorola is going to be such a problem, then I guess I need to go with Samsung or HTC.

This phone does suck for lack of actual ROMs not based on stock. However, the RAM is not as big an issue compared to other Motorola phones with 1GB (i.e. Atrix, Atrix2, Photon, Bionic, Droid RAZR) because, if I recall, their webtop service digs into that RAM anyway. It is a joke though that some of our RAM is taken up by the Tegra 2.
However, I am impressed with Tegra's hardware acceleration for web and Flash. It does seem to load web pages quickly, but I don't have other dual-core phones to compare to.

the lack of non-stock ROMs is partially because of the bootloader. The other reason is because of lack of interest.
Droid X, 2, 2 Global all still have locked bootloaders (I believe), yet a lot of custom ROMs including CyanogenMod and MIUI. Not sure if all the dual-core Motorolas are unlocked, but I know some are.

You talking about me? Or the newbs?
I was able to trade my dx2 for an incredible 2 and the difference is astounding. The dx2 has good hardware and amazing build quality but a lot of the major selling points of the phone don't mean anything. Qhd is a gimmick, as is dual-core IMO. Nothing is built to take advantage of it, including Android.
The best thing about the dx2 was the build quality and feel which is second to none. Everything about the hardware is more refined than my INC2. Eclipse is a great ROM too and makes this device worthwhile.
All in all, I think this phone has a chance at being everything that the x was but it is going to require more people to stand up.
Bottom line: if you want a phone for a specific ROM/kernel, do your research before you spend your cash. Your response to your device will be based on your expectations.
[Sent from my INC2]
The other issue, with the rate the new "bigger badder" phones are popping up, Dev's can't keep up, nor afford to buy every phone on the block. This Android runs 2.2.2, the next runs 2.3.5, the next runs 4.0.1, you get the point. These 1 man teams like Nitro are insane working on 3/4 phones at a time, and building their rom at a pace that keeps up with Android builds and hardware differences. Not to mention the continued support despite the pace of new phones being released. If you want everything under the sun, buy a phone everyone is interested in. Look how ridiculous the Galaxy Nexus forum is already and the phone was just ANNOUNCED weeks ago, not even released yet. We have what we have over here, and complaining about it doesn't help anything. Short of unlocking the BL ourselves and enticing devs by buying them the phone, we probably are not going to get more than the handful of ROMs and support we currently have.
The newly released Eclipse 1.2 and Liberty 3 RC1 are fantastic. This is how the X2 shouldve have been out of the box. Liberty final is coming soon and that'll be it till we get ICS. My phone is now almost as smooth as an iphone.
Also, use the following apps:
Go Launcher
Opera
Quickpic
ES File Explorer
ROM Toolbox
Handcent
I'm installing Eclipse 1.2 now. It looks great.

That's because it IS great and every update gets even better.
don't forget to customize your phone to make it run how you want. Don't feel limited in what this phone can do/handle.
A custom launcher can make a lot of difference in how you phone feels.
I LOVE go launcher ex. Lots of themes and home screen options. Different screen transition animation(even in app drawer..sphere animation is sick)
Right now im still using the launcher that came wit 1.2eclipse..it works smooth and looks good.
Just throwing in my 2cents but the previously mentions about just buying on cool specs is always going to backfire. And the other point about the devs not being able to keep up with the phones is the second major issue.
I got "upgraded" to the DX2 from my DX by insurance and I have run almost every rom I could. After the time I spent with my DX it was as fast as this phone is and there was way more choice of hacks and roms. I have to give serious props to Nitro, the Liberty crew and Navendrob (hope I spelled the name right) because they have done some great work. But unfortunately by the time all their hard work is finally paying off the majority of us will be on the next phone.
To bad more people can't afford to donate to devs so they can have new toys to hack on....

AOSP ROM for Droid Razr GSM ?

Are there any AOSP ROMs out there for the Droid Razr GSM ?
I might be blind, or stupid (take you pick) but so far I have not found any ROM out there that did not have the terrible Motorola Apps bundled into it.
A while back I tried to get into the whole ROM Development thing, but it all just goes over my head as I have no development experience at all.
The thing is that the dialer of the Droid Razr is not stock, and as far as I can see the SMS Messaging app is also doctored (the smilies suck majorly I have to say).

What bugs me most about all the ROMs out there are the customizations applied to them.
I'm not going to rail against the devs, it's their personal choice what they do with their builds, they are just not my cup of tea.
Hopefully someone will release a barebones, purely stock ROM without any of their personal improvements (and neither of Motorola's either).

Yeah, and from what i've seen it'll stay a dream.
Every other rom out there that i've seen has had a bunch of stuff added that hardly anyone will ever use, or has been made rather hideous in respect to themes and color palettes.
There is a reason behind the way Android looks as standard, and I personally do not think that there is any need for improvement, at least on Android 4.0.4, so it would be really nice if the devs could leave the visual experience unchanged
They relesead the alpha for cm9 on gsm razr, i know that is not completelly aosp but is very similar to it.
(i'm not posting the link since is an alpha and inexperienced people might try to install it and brick or having problem with it)
CyanogenMod has been a battery hog ever since CM6 for me, that's why I ditched it for OxygenROM. Also, i'm sorry to say that CM also has accumulated too much bloatware after it became popular. The choice to include ADW was likewise spectacularly stupid.

The new Razrs are far from fat.
I don't get everyone's super thin obsession.

Yes, because You have a Maxx, whitch is fat. So comparing to Your phone, new "Razrs" are normal. But for us, the owners, of the REAL RAZRS, new gen is a real dissapointment. I mean... lets face it, Razrs (from the begginning - V3) were ALL about how thin they were, and the flawlees design. They were THE THINNEST phones in the world. Og Droid Razr even now, after almost 2 years is one of the thinnest phones arround. Meanwhine the new Razrs should not been marketed as RAZR in the first place, because they are the same thickness as all other phones. If Motorola wont release new gen razr, lets say somewhere about 6.1mm, they are screwed... because they cant offer anything else than a design. Software and screens goes to Samsung (impossible to beat), build quality ant materials goes to Sony and Htc, so what is left? I can tell You whats left (for a Razr line): FLAWLESS SUPER THIN DESIGN! AVERAGE SPEC (more to the better side), and REASONABLE PRICE. For example, in my country (in EUROPE), RAZR HD costs way more than S3. So new Razrs doesnt have the chance to stand out in any way (average spec, average design, average materials,HUGE price tag). Good luck, motorola...
