I just bought my Note today [came from an Atrix running CM7]. The rep at the store said I would get an OTA update of ICS when I booted up....but that didn't happen. Was he mistaken? So I decided to flash one directly from xda, I've rooted, got odin up and running, flashed CWM and was going to flash an ICS rom...but not sure which one. Most of the ROM threads say discontinued, some are hybrids, can't seem to find just a plain ICS rom. What is the best running ICS rom available? Was the rep wrong and the Note hasn't gotten an official ICS update, as it appears all these roms are from leaked versions that don't retain the original note features.
Any help from anyone that's been around the Note forum for a while and is up to date on all these choices for getting ICS would be awesome!
Thanks
It was released a while ago. You can try the official the kies if you want to give that a shot first. Also, there are some official ics rims (uclf6) means the official release so all of those are official not leaks. But yeah, just read a bit more I'd say.
I would suggest cm9 nightly if you had cm7 on your matrix. Black star is probably the closest to stock that's been updated recently

The rep was mistaken
there was no OT but rather updated thru Kies
There is about 3 threads of non discontinued roms that are pure stock ICS
They're there ...

Like everyone else is saying you get it through kies. You'll need to get that from the Samsung website. Run a search for it and it should send you the appropriate link

here's the link to the post for the official ucfl6 for odin.
Use at your discretion as you can't blame other people for mistakes made when flashing, but I used this and I know it works, if you want a bit more info on it read the thread I linked, good luck.

Are you US at&t or Canada? The ota update for Canada had problems so if that's you, don't accept it. Do as others have said and use Kies. Don't root or add a recovery until you install the upgrade.

..and I thought I was pretty well read on Android [lol]. I didn't realize there would be such difference between manufacturers. Previously I've flashed everything via CWM. This will be my first device utilizing Odin, and Kies. I've already run a couple things via Odin with not problems. I see a lot of references to Kies, [One last question before I begin] is this the same Kies that comes installed on the Note [which appears to be a web-interface to browse your phone contents], or is there a different Kies I should be using for updating ROMs?

Figures, you mention exactly the ONLY two things I've done to my device so far - Rooted, and added CWM. Do you say this because I will have to repeat those processes over again after upgrade, or because they will hinder the upgrade process?

yes you will loose root and cwm, so if you use the link I posted you can use odin instead of kies, get cwm from braway's thread for odin, and get superuser.zip for ics and put it on the sd card before you start the process, go to download mode, flash the update thru odin, then the cwm thru odin, and then you can boot into cwm and flash the superuser zip, and get root back. Easy. :good:

Thanks, I started the ICS file download a few minutes ago, the 'free' download is really, really, really throttled so it looks like I've got about an hour to wait for that. I got all the other files waiting and ready...should be good to go when the d/l finishes.
Thanks
No that's Kies Air and its about as useless as a third nipple.
Go to the Samsung-Kies site for the upgrade and everyrhing will be there (files to download, drivers, step-by-step directions).
You do this with your pc. You use the stock usb cable. You use usb port on the back of your pc (powered usb).

That would explain why I could not find the option to update firmware! Thanks...got the PC version from Samsung site. I'm really liking ICS. It seems like now official Android includes a lot of the features that were in Older Cyanogen Mod versions that made it so much better than stock Android. I'd say it's very possible to be happy with this device leaving it with a stock ROM. For those who have gone the custom route [I'm leaning towards CM9, as I've been happy with CM on my Atrix] are there any features that you couldn't imagine being without. Besides the usual performance tweaks, and bloat removal that would be nice...it would also be nice not chasing the 'nightly threads' and flashing updates at least once a week. It seems there a lot more people in this I717 forum who are sticking with stock ICS, than there were people sticking with stock GB on the Atrix forum. For those running the manufacturer ICS update, is there anything glaring missing that would make you inclined to go custom? I've only been using it for less than a day, and need to make a quick decision where to go custom or not because I leave for a week tomorrow morning.
Thanks again for any input...
...Sorry to all those who have helped with their replys and haven't been 'thanked' properly [get maxed out at 8 / day]. I will try and catch up on that each day, as I really appreciate everyone's input. It's been very useful in making the decision on what devices I purchase, and getting them up and running as desired quickly...especially when working with a device / manufacturer for the first time.
You have CWM. Just go get a few rom's, label them in different folders on your external sd card, get Titanium Backup, an sms and phone call baxkup and restore, and you can flash any rom and put your apps and stuff on without internet access.
When restoring with TiBU only never restore system data. Doing that will make even the fastest rom act sick.
I have to say the collective's aocp is an amazing smooth ROM you lose spen gestures
but there are other apps and features that make me not miss them.i would highly recommend it.
U will loose s pen with all ROMs that don't run touchwiz(cm9, 10, hybrids........) but ur phone will run better. U can get papyrus from the market if that bothers u.

hey every1 call me hatcher, soo many pages of info didnt know where to start also, most of you will think im an idiot probably asking simple questions! here goes:
bought my sgs2 and love it to death only had it a week and its on orange , i went ahead and rooted my phone using odin 3 and s2 root. i decided to install an original secure kernel again. all seems good, but i didnt know what kernal was is the best? and is it the whole firmware thing? my current android version is 2.3.4 is this the newest and best because i saw something on the web about ics 4 or something. went onto kies and no update was found so maybe that is the latest official, but then i was confused about it saying u have to root again after ics. so yea if anyone could give me a heads up it will be great.
basically i want my phone rooted but running the latest OFFICIAL version with updates available thanks.
did download the newest kernel on this site but phone didnt boot so reverted and thinking there is more to this, dont want to break my phone!! thanks
also another really random question if any1 can answer does powervr plugin meant to take soo long for loading on shadow guardian for example thanks very much, soory for bad punctuation and grammer my english is not perfect yet
just realised that kernel 4.03 i downloaded is 8 mb and another ics 4.03 was 300 mb! really getting confused about os, firmware kernel etc and dont want to miss anything!

Your latest firmware should be ICS 4.0.3, (you can flash ICS 4.0.4 official/custom rom!) not gingerbread 2.3.4! You can download (after registering!) your "OFFICIAL" firmware/rom from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona Just choose your region/network/firmware, & then flash with odin 3 again! This will unroot you because you'll be flashing original stock firmware, so you will have to root again with your rooting method of choice! I personally prefer to root using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 to just keep the latest OFFICIAL stock rom on my device but still have root! Also, using this method wont give you the yellow triangle on each reboot because you're not flashing a kernel to root your device! If you ever need to put your phone in for repair under warranty & your flash counter in download mode doesn't say "No" (0), then they'll possibly charge you for it, as you've flashed your device ! Use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22463153#post22463153 to reset it (ONLY FOR USE ON ICS ROMS!!), but make "SURE" the app gives the "EXACT" same count that it says in download mode, or you could potentially HARD BRICK your expensive toy! The warnings are there to be read, good luck!
thamkyou for your swift and informative reply.
so did kies not update when u have rooted your device?
if so i take it you have to manually flash to the newest firmware everytime a new release comes out?
is this the only thing i need to worry about with updating the firmware no other donloads or auto updates im missing, because like i said i saw a firmware update that was 300mb and i cldnt find anywhere online official kernely/firmware builds, and it seems that a simple flash of 8mb or so updates everything? i saw people talking about connecting via kies to update firmware and it was a big 300 meg file!
thanks for your links also mate.

Whenever you root, kies gives you the "wrong firmware to update" error! No worries though, because YES, you can always flash the latest firmware or custom roms manually! This is usually done through Odin 3 or CWM (clockworkmod recovery!) If done through Odin 3, your flash counter in download mode escalates/goes up, & the only way you can reset it for warranty purposes is using Triangle Away (link in my previous post!) which can be DANGEROUS!! Or if you flash roms through CWM then your counter's not affected also! The majority of people however, prefer to use Mobile Odin on the Galaxy Sll, as flashing with this app also does not give you the boot up triangle warning, or affect your download mode counter! Here's the link to Chainfires lates free version here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899 Or if you appreciate the work the devs (for this particular app, Chainfire!) do for us in this forum, you can obtain the "PRO" (paid/donate!) version here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro&hl=en
thanks for the reply again crock daddy! mobile odin sounds awesome,
i see i was getting confused because whenever i have ran kies, it has never asked/said anything about updating firmware, guess ive installed an older firmware version than what my phone came with oops lol. i guess im all good to go, cant believe what this handset can do! and yes i will be donating to the clever gits, chainfire is insane, thanks to that i have shadowguardian dead space and backstab working
thanks for your time again peace out.
right flashed to ics, love it, u sir are a legend....
BUT i tried rooting and it said my kernel was secure thus no temp root access. so closed s2 root down. (would this of done any damage or corrupted data btw?)
tried the cwm zip in sd card method, but cldnt find su zip, also read that it doesnt give full root access or sumin. (again would going into clockwork recovery have done any damage because i didnt complete the rooting process-cldnt find su file so just shut it down)
and im guessing there are no insecure kernels for ics yet?
sorry to be so pedantic and worrying about silly things lol.
also have had a couple of jitters and games completley freezing since ics is this common and or should i reinstall games?
this is the kernel version im using for an orange sgs2 19100p
I9100PBVLP6
just doule checking this is the most up to date and stable build.. cheers

When you root using the cwm & superuser.zip you won't see the su.zip in recovery mode! You have to put an sd-card in your device (external sd-card!) & put su.zip on that rather than your internal sd-card! that way recovery sees it! & YES you do gain full root! (read the whole thread! : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719)
If Superuser shows up in your app's, then that's the indication you need to tell you that you have root!
Either this method, CF root method or any other method will allow you to install custom ROMS, but there is an advantage and a disadvantage for both.
:;This method: Doesn't affect custom rom counter or triangle, but CWM recovery is not permanent. (but once you flash a custom ROM that has a different kernel with CWM recovery included then your rom counter will still be unaffected and whatever CWM recovery is included in the custom ROM will become your new permanent recovery)
You can still use CWM recovery to flash stuff with this method, by using clockworkmod (Rom manager!) & booting straight into CWM recovery & doing everything you need to do from there!
This method keeps the stock recovery, so that if you have to send your phone in for a repair, the repairer doesen't see that you have a custom recovery (CWM recovery!) which tells them you have rooted your device & void your warrenty!
:-CF-Root Method: Flashing the CF-root kernel (or ANY insecure kernel!) with Odin will increase your custom ROM counter, which can be cleared with TriangleAway.apk (only on ICS). But Chainfire has warned that it is dangerous and can permanently brick the device (i've used it on XWLP7 ICS 4.0.3 and it works perfect.)
I've used both methods, but I found this method easier and generally safer.
As for some of your games freezing on ICS, try going to settings/developer options & try checking "Force GPU rendering" to see if that makes a difference!
The latest official Samsung firmware for Orange here in the UK is: I9100PBVLP6 (ICS 4.0.3!) so you do have the correct one, but I don't think there's an insecure ICS kernel available for that version as of yet!
I have a Galaxy Note i717 from AT&T that I rooted. Worked great.
Yesterday I upgraded to ICS via Kies. Worked great.
Then I proceeded to root it again using odin.
Unfortunately even after all the things done it now will not boot up at all.
All I get is the S a m s u n g logo. I can put it into boot mode and the computer see's it but nothing more.
If anyone can point me to any rom/bootloader/ etc. I would be most grateful.
Or just let me know what to do and where to get roms. I did search and there are many for the i700.
I guess I need a bootloader and rom right?
Sorry folks. Point me somewhere else will have to get another phone.
T h a n k s ...
Others would tell you to look in the dev section for the stock rom (its usually called something like "in case of brick) I've had issues issues getting it to work but Im certain it was user error as to why it didn't work for me. But another option that I think could work would be to get your phone into download mode and run the ics upgrade thru kies again. You'll lose everything in your phone but I think it'll get your phone up and running again. But before you do any other that...did you make a nandroid back of? Or have you downloaded any roms to your phone because if you did you can just enter cwm and reflash any rom you may have or just flash your backup, backups are so important when doing these sort of things, saves a lot of head aches.
Edit: after reading your post again it says your phone messed up after rooting, try and re run the root file thru Odin, I kinda sorta remember reading something similar to this were people had issue trying to root. I'll try and find the thread.

this happened due to rooting with the Gingerbread method...so using Nash reply run/reinstall your Official ICS...and to root....
see My Links in red in my signature...go the GNote Super page....you should see what is being used to root the Official ICS...I used it and lots others, there prob more methods out there, but I found this is the easiest and more proven method....
Cant miss the info on GNote page regarding Rooting.
so to recap...since your believe you have bricked your phone...
use the method Nash replied to you with...put into download mode....run the official ics, you will need the model, serial number of your phone...
let us know how it works out for you...

And once you're rooted and all fixed up, enter cwm and create a backup. These are great because no matter what you do to your phone as long as you can enter cwm you'll always be able to fix your phone via backup.

I wanted to mention, I'm not sure how you updated thru kies originally (legit update or emergency update) the method you'll be using this time (if you choose to fix thru kies) is the more or less emergency method. I wanted to mention this because when your in download mode and connect your phone to your PC and run kies, kies will try to connect to your device but will time out over time...it took me 2 days of Q and A before I realized kies won't connect with phone in download mode, but that's OK. Once phone is connected click tools/firmware upgrade and initialization, and as bigjoe said youll than need to input model and serial numbers (all caps) than click OK. You'll have a few prompts afterwards but yo basically on your way to a running phone.

Brick = nothing at all happening on phone.
Samsung logo = bad flash (corrupt file used)
Brick can sometimes be revived with a JTAG device.
Samsung logo means re download file, re read instructions and relevent thread, and redo your work.
Don't be too anxious -you will fix it.
I suggest using Kies upgrade > emerency firmware method. Download mode is the key.

Thanks all for the replies.
I was able to go to DEV Section and get the full AT&T ICS Rom. Used ODIN to get it back to factory ICS.
Then (with great care ) re-rooted it using ICS root stuff. I have it all in case anyone else needs this route. Else follow instructions above.
Thanks all. I think for now ICS is where this will stay. In fact Gingerbread was good enough except for not being able to use Chrome.

great, can you put solved in the title...thx
I've recently purchased a Thunderbolt from eBay (which I know is always a bit sketchy, and that the device is getting a bit older) but so far it's been a relatively good little phone. I'm definitely enjoying the LTE over the 3G my iPhone 4 had before I accidentally murdered it. I have the HTC Dev unlock on this phone, but the stock ICS rom pushed out by Verizon and HTC feels bloated and slow to me, having come from the iPhone 4 running a jailbroken iOS 6.1.2.
Would someone be so kind as to point me towards a fast, stable ICS or Jellybean ROM and instructions on how to install it and a proper recovery on my phone? I'm not all that picky about appearances, and I wouldn't mind running stock Android either if someone can tell me how to get it running on this phone. Currently I'm running all of the latest updates courtesy of the previous owner (I'm up to HBOOT 1.08, ICS 4.0.4, software version 7.02.605.10 710RD).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
EDIT: After much more tinkering, I have managed to get Clockwork Mod Recovery running on my phone, but I would still very much appreciate if someone had a suggestion for a ROM that runs quickly and efficiently.
Look through the Development forum here and head over to Infected Roms. Lots of answers to your questions in both places. Just takes a little time go through the threads to find what you need.

I just mashed my Rezound, so I'm back on the TBolt as well and had to go through the same thing. Before I go all out on this, I can tell you that the process to get this done isn't that bad considering I will compile all the instructions here, but you have to flash a patch through HBOOT then relock the phone, take it back to an older ROM, run revolutionary on it for s-off, load radios, then back to ICS lol. If you think it will be worth it to you, let me know an I will post the links. It's just a bunch of back and forth and I took me about a week to find all the pieces.

Go to this page to start the journey http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thundebolt-hacking-guides/8695-guide-how-gain-root-s-off-after-taking-ics-ota.html and just FYI, I use 4ext recovery now and love it, but you have to be s-off and rooted to get it. use the QR code found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31966447 It will download and app to your SD card (typically) under "Downloads" and you will need a file manager or root explorer to install it, and I had to download "4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC5" twice before it took.
Then once you have gone through those steps (I had TWRP recovery and it worked) you will be on GB. To save some time, go to http://forums.infectedrom.com/ and create an account. I used the "DEBLOATED Rom Deodexed version: 7.02.605.10 710RD". It's stock with all of the VZW crap pulled out and deodexed. I'm haveing to revert back to a custom GB ROM because the new ICS kernel doesn't have the built-in support for the 2-way call recording feature, but everything else works like a dream. I agree, that for the TB, staying close to stock on ICS is a good idea since development has dwindling for this device. Cheers and let me know if you need any help with this. just reply here

I've been attempting to do just that, and every time I try to load my recovery, I keep getting ClockworkMod. 4ext fails to install, despite the app saying it was successful.

I don't quite remember how I got to the end result of 4ext actually working but I remeber I had to download it twice from the installer app, and told the app to wipe cache + dalvik... but just to make sure, check these steps:
1) make sure you're rooted with s-off and have SU and busy box installed.
2) download the updater app file from the link provided in the QR code (from previous post).
3) make sure "unknown sources" is enabled in settings so you can install the updater app, then find the app in your download folder on your SD card and install it.
4) open the updater app and give it SU permissions, then run the install/update option and select the proper file. This will also be stored on your SD card (in a 4ext folder I think...don't quote me on that though).
after install you should be good, but I believe you can push via ADB as well. Attached is a PDF from the Dev on this as well.
---------- Post added at 12:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:26 PM ----------
Sorry, I guess the PDF was too large. just remove the "http://forum.xda-developers.com/" out of the link and replace it with "http://www.". http://forum.xda-developers.com/4ext.net/install.pdf I can't post external links yet.
Now that I am thinking about it. Did you update super user or super su after getting root? The app itself probably needs it and the binary as well. You can update the binary by opening the app. It should prompt you to update it.

A while back when I first got my Verizon Note 2, I used Adam Outler's Casual method to root my phone to Stock. I don't mind stock and root mostly for the Tethering.
About a week back the OTA notice hit my phone. I have declined the notice/update twice giving myself time to look for the root update. I found this thread by Beans: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518704 ........ It seems right but this thread by AdamOutler says not to use ODIN: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045563
So I am a little confused. I just want the update but don't want to mess up and not have my tethering ever again.... or brick the phone.
As a newbie, it's a scary task. Someone please help point me in the right direction. I just want the 4.3 Stock. If there is a thread for my situation I couldn't find it. I search "casual TWRP 4.3 OTA" and other similar variations.
I can still get to the TWRP 2.5.0.0. I have also downloaded the ODIN and started it... looks simple, but there are no instructions.
Someone please help me...
Thanks

Welp, couple things...
#1 - The link you posted above is the from the Note 3. You want this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458
#2, The ROM gets flashed via CWM or TRWP like normal, it's only the radio update that gets flashed via ODIN. That shouldn't affect your current unlock/root status.
#3 - If it is only ROOT you are after, the 4.3 OTA is Rootable, just not unlockable. So if by chance you accidentally take the OTA you should still be able to ROOT and install your Tethering app. You just won't be able to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery/rom.

So if you are OTA'd to MJ9, how do you unlock?

You cannot. Best bet is to not take the other and unlock your bootloader. If you take it you will probably be locked for a very long time.

Correct, you cannot currently UNLOCK the OTA MJ9 boot loader. But you can ROOT. Which will allow you to tether.

I would think long and hard about taking the OTA...although root is available, you may want an unlocked bootloader at some point, and there is no guarantee that is coming to the official 4.3. My guess is that it will not simply because this phone is 18 months old and the skilled developers that put in the time to do things like unlock bootloaders move on to newer devices.
If you managed to use Casual in the past, Odin won't be a problem for you. Below are the steps:
Odin takes about 5 minutes total...its really easy.
Download Odin (it's just a simple windows program). - http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...3&d=1304094576
Make sure you have the latest samsung drivers - http://www.mediafire.com/?hzlnda0l5t8qyes
Download and extract the firmware from the first post in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458
Save whatever 4.3 ROM you choose to your external SD card.
Power down the phone and boot back into download mode (volume down, power and home at the same time).
Open Odin, plug in phone...Odin should recognize the phone and you will see the com port noted in yellow.
Check the PDA box and put the firmware file (unzipped) in the PDA slot. Click start and 30 seconds later you are done. Phone will reboot into recovery at this point.
Then you can flash any of the 4.3 ROMs (including stock) in TWRP (I use 2.5.0.0 too). I have tried them all and Sophisticated 3.0 has worked the best for me...I will be trying beans 23 as soon as it is done.

Thank you so much. Updated and everything seem to work just fine, but after some use it started rebooting. I am going to put on Sophisticated as you suggested. Hopefully, it will be more stable then the stock ROM.
And I can't get the WIFI Tethering to work. Which Tethering app are you using? I have unlimited data... and need to make sure Verizon isn't charging me for no reason.

I had some reboots on the stock rom too...but once I went to the other roms (I tried Nephilium, Sophisticated and N3bula, but had the best results with Sophisticated) and I haven't had one reboot.
As for the wifi tethering, on stock you need to flash the file below (some of the newer roms, including Sophisticated have it baked in).

The reason you ask what? You didn't ask anything. And as it's been stated a million times, no unlock method avaliable and unlikely there will be one.

Eh, he is one of those that puts the question in his title instead of the body of the reply. But as @akellar said, there is nothing available.
Thanks so much for all the help. I got everything working right based on the instructions from this thread. I initially had an issue with the "Wifi Tether" because I was using a 3rd party app. Instead the correct app is the "Mobile Hotspot" app. It might be named differently for other carriers, but for Verizon it is "Mobile Hotspot".
Again thank you for all the replies.
Thank you for Sophisticated v3.
Thank you Adam Outler for the original Casual root.
And Thank you runandhide05 for the "Mobile Hotspot" hack!

My uncle has a SGH-I777 running 2.3.6 and is on straight talk. Was going to update to stock 4.1.2 for him but apparently Samsung (im a moto fan) is a pain to upgrade. OTA says hes up to date even though samsungs official site for this phone says newest ota is jellybean. I installed samsungs crappy kies on my laptop and typed in model and S/N and it downloaded but never would let me install. Im short on time. Does ANYONE have an ota zip that i could load on sd and flash? Please and thanks because I need to get this done ASAP!
Before Someone flips out saying "There's no stock jellbean" like i've seen in a couple other posts.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00047325&fm_seq=51324
^Yea. On my droid x you could easily find ota zips to flash in stock recovery. I would just flash cm11 on this thing but i'm sort of forbid to "hack" his device. lol but yea if someone could help me...i'd love that..

yea thanks ill check that out. I'm used to devices with locked bootloaders and honestly, i prefer that. it's so easy to experient because worst case if you mess up just flash a .sbf file and you're fine. I get a kick out of LG G3 users and their petition for an unlock code lmao. Odin is neat but I'm not going to ever have to mess with it hoopefully
I don't recommend following the galaxys2root lead.
Kies and ODIN are your only options for flashing stock distribution to the i777 on a windows machine.
I see that you're trying to avoid ODIN, but it's the easier way to solve your current dilemma. As stated, Kies can be finnicky.
The stock UCMD8 4.1.2 distribution can be found in the i777 download repository (see sig), and ODIN is how we get folks back on track (for directions, see sig).

Wow you remind me of someone from the droid x realm. and his phone isn't with me. Btw i dual boot win8.1 and linux but kies is only available on windows so that's the only reason i was running it at the time of trying this. Honestly, i'm not that worried about it since apparently his problem was fixed. He couldn't send or receive MMS so i done standard trouble shooting and I think what finally got it fixed was wiping cache with sim out of it reinstalling sim and then dumping cache again. Thanks again though guys and i'll refer to the links if he has anymore problems.
